Computer of the year 2018

Awards Winner
Windows' advocates will be quick to point out the Apple MacBook Pro won't win any value-for-money awards, but as an everyday laptop that's portable, capable, and most importantly, desirable, it has few peers. The 2018 model might look like a cut and paste of the previous iteration, but it’s a notebook packed with the latest Apple tech, like Touch ID and the T2 Security Chip from the iMac Pro. There’s plenty of power, an improved display, a quieter keyboard, and a battery good for a full day of normal use. For working professionals, it gets the job done in the most unassuming way and with the cleanest profile of any high-performance laptop out there.

The runners-up

Microsoft Surface Laptop 2

Microsoft’s carpet-covered Surface Laptop 2 isn’t a drastic upgrade on its equally strokeable predecessor but it improves in all the right areas: it’s faster and it runs the proper version of Windows 10, not the old app-based one.

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1

With a 4K touchscreen that folds right back, you’d struggle to find a tablet as powerful as Dell’s XPS 15 2-in-1. In fact, even as a laptop it’s an impressive but slightly noisy performer, it’s just a shame the battery doesn’t last longer.

Lenovo Ideapad 530S

Slick and sexy, the Lenovo Ideapad 530 S combines the best of performance in an attractive and light form factor for an affordable bit of money.
