You've bought the big presents. You've bought the stocking fillers. Now you need that little in-between gift that says, "I care".
Thankfully, we've scoured the web for best Christmas kit that you can pick up for less than £50. Neat.
Flic Smart Button (£29.99)
If you’re prone to mumbling or you speak with a regional accent, asking Alexa to turn up the heating can sometimes result in her scheduling a meeting with the dog. Fortunately, Flic Smart Buttons mean the smart home life is still viable for mumblers and northerners. With a simple click, double click or long press they can turn on your Hue bulbs, start playing Spotify playlists, or lock the door when a well-spoken friend comes calling.
Hyperkin SmartBoy (£49.99)
You might not have touched your Game Boy Color for a decade but chances are you’ve still been hoarding Tetris, Metroid II and Pokémon Blue out of idle nostalgia. Once you’ve managed to dig them out of the attic, slot the SmartBoy into your phone’s USB-C port (sorry, iPhone folk), slide your cartridge of choice into the back and spend up to five hours at a time running away from Weedles when you’re really chasing Pikachu. It’ll even upscaled the visuals to the resolution of your phone screen.
Ikea Tradfri Dimming Kit (£15)
Thought Ikea was only useful for MDF furniture and meatballs? With its Tradfri smart lights range you can toggle or dim the lights via your smartphone, while Alexa, Google and Apple HomeKit compatibility will arrive soon. This Dimming Kit includes one ready-to-use bulb and a wireless dimmer, so you can activate the mood lighting without having to get up from the sofa.
Amazon Echo Dot (£34.99)
Christmas is all about wonder, right? Or at least it is when you're buying for a kid. Why not give a grown-up that same sense of excited amazement by buying them an Amazon Echo Dot.
The easiest, and cheapest, entry point to the smart home revolution, the Dot houses Amazon's Alexa smart assistant, meaning it'll be able to answer their questions, set reminders, timers and alarms, and do the online shopping. And, if they team it with other bits of smart home kit - such as the £15 Ikea Trådfri bulb above - they'll have themselves a sci-fi home of the future.
Still need convincing? If they plug it into a stereo or pair it with a Bluetooth speaker, they'll have a voice-controlled music system. At this price, it's a no-brainer.
Amazon Fire 7 (£49.99)
The cheapest and most basic tablet in Amazon’s range, the Fire 7 is primarily made for a bit of video here and a spot of Kindle reading there. The Fire HD is better, but at this bargain price it's tough to complain.
Yes, it can be prone to crashes and has a dreary screen - but the latest version has Alexa onboard, it won’t fall over at the drop of the hat and has a good enough battery life to keep the occupants of the backseats of a Volvo entertained all the way to Cornwall.
Beyerdynamic Byron (£41.94)
Beyerdynamic made its name with expensive over-ear cans for studio pros, but these buds are just as capable of catering to the ears of ordinary punters walking to the shops. They’re full of detail, offer weighty bass and a nice, evenly balanced midrange. Earphones under £50 really shouldn’t sound this good.
Raspberry Pi Zero W Essentials Kit (£15.60)
A gift perfect for someone who remembers tower PCs and Christmas ’94: a 6cm computer capable of running desktop software and playing 1080p videos.
Its best trick is being a retro gaming machine (Google ‘RetroPie’) - but it can do loads of other cool stuff, too.
This new version has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth onboard, while the Essentials Kit includes a load of extras to help you get it up and running.
Roku Express (£29)
Roku's dinky little media streamer turns your tellybox into a smart TV, with an array of channels in full HD. You can pick from pay-as-you-go blockbusters with Now TV, subscription services like Netflix, and free channels including the BBC iPlayer. For film buffs, there are weird and wonderful film collections on obscure channels like Moonlight Movies, which offers up a selection of free b-movies from the golden age of Hollywood.
