Skullcandy Grind Wireless
Think Skullcandy and three obvious things pop up: skulls, bass and more colour finishes than a Homebase paint mixing station. The Skullcandy Grind Wireless headphones don’t get rid of the skull insignia, but do seem like an altogether more grown-up offering. They stick close to your head and the design is so clean it wouldn’t look out of place in the V&A. Unless you get the version plastered with camo and tartan, anyway.
Rather than using flexi-cups, the Skullcandy Grind Wireless 'phones simply tilt a few degrees. But don't let that put you off, because you also get nice, soft Bowers & Wilkins-style pillow pads and relatively light headband tension. They’ll be dead comfy unless the pad angle disagrees with your ears, in which case they may be a nightmare - so try before you buy, if you can.
Instead of using awkward gesture controls, they use the same buttons as a normal headphone remote, pasting them on the back of one cup so as to avoid ruining the look. It works well enough and is easier than many attempts to do it all via touch.
The sound is a huge departure from the Skullcandy of old. Big, bloated bass that gums up rhythmic cogs has turned into weighty but tasteful bass, providing power without pulling focus. Mids are a tad recessed but are nicely textured given the price and the treble is well resolved. The soundstage could be wider, but to get much better you’d need to spend an extra 50%. Ouch. Their battery lasts for up to 12 hours, and don’t shy away from using the cable should it die, as wired listening cleans up the light artefacting of the non-aptX Bluetooth stream.
