Long awaited evolution ’em up Spore is still a little way off sprouting working legs and opposable thumbs but creator Maxis has today released the Spore Creature Creator to give eager gamers with a God complex a taste of what’s to come.

The free demo version features 25 per cent of the body parts that’ll come in the full game when it hatches in shops on 5 September. Use it to create a cute blob of amoeba-esque life, a blue horned dinosaur or whatever grotesque being your brain can conjure up.

Once you’re happy with your creation the app will let you share pics and videos of its first moments and upload straight to a special YouTube channel or to the Sporepedia – a planet-sized online directory of Spore life forms.

Watch out for our very own Stuff monster rampaging through a universe near you very soon.
