Your next birthday cake may display augmented reality video

Disney has patented the rights to augmented reality birthday cakes, but does that make them more or less appetising?

A picture of your face on your birthday cake might have been impressive before, but now that Disney has patented augmented reality cakes, only interactive video feeds will do.

The future of cakes looks like it will involve motion sensors and a small projector built into a cake decoration. That will mean videos on the cake surface – a white water rafting Mickey Mouse, for example – that you can interact with using the motion sensors. Make a sprinkle motion and sparkles will be dusted, or cut a slice of cake and water will flow into the hole.

So if the promise of delicious cake alone isn’t good enough for you and your loved ones, add an augmented reality video. Photo slide shows, home edited videos and even visual storybooks are all possibilities. The only question is when? We’re waiting, Disney.
