Historic Rivendell Travel Print (from £20)

Discreetly geek out your home with this decorative print; at a casual glance, it looks like one of those vintage railway holiday destination posters, but peer more closely and it reveals itself as an homage to Tolkien. A framed version will set you back £35.

Parrot Flower Power (£50)

January's unpredictable weather can wreak havoc on your plants, so this Bluetooth-equipped plant monitor is a godsend. Stick it into the soil, fire up the associated iOS app, and it'll monitor sunlight, humidity, temperature and fertilizer levels, letting you know when your foliage needs topping up.

Alien ReAction Action Figure: Alien (£14)

Way back in the mists of time (well, 1979), Ridley Scott's Alien hit cinemas. "Hmm," thought Kenner Toys, "That's a sci-fi film like Star Wars, for which we've released a hugely successful line of toys." And thus was born one of the most ludicrously ill-conceived toy ranges in history.

Fortunately, someone saw sense and cancelled it, realising that perhaps HR Giger's Freudian xenomorph penile-horrors were not the most appropriate children's toys.

ReAction has no such qualms, and has dug out the old moulds to recreate the Alien toy range, complete with retro packaging.
