For the truly determined, there&rsquo;s one each of component, composite and SCART, but hopefully your beyond those ancient connections by now, aren&rsquo;t you?</p> <p>Then we get to the One Connect port. No, it&rsquo;s not an input for teenage boy bands &ndash; it&rsquo;s for plugging in an extra module for future upgrades. That means the TV won&rsquo;t get too dated too soon. The more you watch, the more accurate the service is. One of these leads you to the smart hub; the other is a list of recent activity. That means you no longer have to scroll through BBC parliament and porn to get to your favourite channels at the far ends of the programming wasteland. Across all resolutions you get properly dark black levels, good motion handling and crisp, clean whites.</p> <p>In the past Samsung had issues with colours. But what you won&rsquo;t hear is Mary Berry complaining that the side of one of the cakes looks curved when it should be straight. Because while Sony&rsquo;s new S90 is its first in the UK with a curved screen, it is less prominently curved than other TVs of its ouvre and so straight line distortion is minimised.</p> <p><strong>But how would Mary know&hellip; oh, never mind. So curved TVs are bad, is that the story now? </strong></p> <p>Uh-oh, soggy bottom &ndash; your conclusion is under-baked! The advantage of a curved TV &ndash; the way it delivers light to the curved surface of your peepers &ndash; is all present and correct. But the S90 is the result of some hefty research into where the sweet curve radius lies. Between 5000mm and 11000mm, says Sony. But don&rsquo;t wear them out and about, because that&rsquo;ll just hurt your eyes.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/25-best-things-watch-netflix-right-now/feature" target="_blank">The 30 Best Things to Watch on Netflix right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="There’s a generous set of connections, including four HDMI 2.0 inputs, three USB ports and LAN (as well as wifi)" alt="LG 55UB950V review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-55UB950V-panel.jpg?1406994770" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The two pairs of passive 3D specs are surprisingly stylish" alt="LG 55UB950V review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_6728.jpg?1406994770" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Picture packs punch </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The first thing to do is to download Netflix and stream some 4K. The picture is super sharp, and it&rsquo;s easy to pick out all the little details. If you&rsquo;ve ever felt the need to scrutinise every line on Kevin Spacey&rsquo;s face, here&rsquo;s your chance.</p> <p>The picture isn&rsquo;t very subtle, however. After marvelling at all the texture afforded by Ultra High Definition, attention falls to the colours. They&rsquo;re very punchy, and in a showroom environment would have no problem grabbing your attention, but you miss the super-realistic nuance and gentle gradation that you get from a truly stunning TV set. The LG also struggles a bit with contrast, and blacks are rarely properly dark.</p> <p>When it comes to upscaling 1080p, the LG does a good job. The picture is as sharp and clean as on a good HD TV, and there&rsquo;s little in the way of noise. Motion could be a little more stable, but that can be fine-tuned in the settings.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuff-cool-list-2013-4k-now-ready-conquer-your-living-room/feature" target="_blank">Here&#39;s why 4K TV is set to conquer your living room</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> LG 55UB950V Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen size</strong>: 55in (also available in 65in)</p> <p><strong>Resolution</strong>: 3840 x 2160</p> <p><strong>Display technology</strong>: LCD with LED backlight</p> <p><strong>Speaker output</strong>: 35W</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Freeview, HDMI 2.0 (x4), USB (x3), Component, Composite, Scart, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Headphone, Optical output</p> <p><strong>Dimensions (hwd)</strong>: 776 x 1232 x 242mm with stand, 734 x 1232 x 60mm without stand</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 24.2kg with stand, 23.1kg without stand</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> WebOS, the ingenious interface </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It wasn&rsquo;t long ago that smart TV interfaces were unmitigated rubbish. In fact many smart portals are still very much like that.</p> <p>LG&rsquo;s new WebOS (also known as LG Smart+ TV for no reason at all) is the kick up the backside the TV designers should have had years ago. It&rsquo;s got no specific &lsquo;hub&rsquo; to visit. Everything is laid out in the Launcher, a pop-up bar that comes and goes without interrupting your current programme. The idea is to introduce all manner of multitasking, so you can jump between YouTube, Netflix, a specific IT program and your games console as easily as flicking from BBC One to BBC Two on a standard TV.</p> <p>The system is laid out chronologically. A big window in the centre is your current choice. Go left to see recently view channels and apps. Go right to flick through all the other apps you&rsquo;ve downloaded, which you can rearrange as you please. Operation is super-slick, with no significant lag at all. year because teams need more time, or the competition looks too fierce. Electronic Arts says it&rsquo;s the former with Battlefield Hardline, the cops-and-robbers spinoff of the shooter series that will now launch in 2015 instead of this October.</p> <p>In a blog post on the matter, Karl Magnus Troedsson of Battlefield series creator DICE&mdash;which is working in tandem with new lead developer Visceral Games&mdash;says that the delay will allow the teams to implement new ideas pulled from the community following the recent multiplayer beta test, as well as flesh out the single-player story content and focus on online stability.</p> <p>And it&rsquo;s not the only big EA game to slide down the calendar, but luckily, the slip isn&rsquo;t nearly as severe with Dragon Age: Inquisition. The BioWare-developed role-playing epic will now launch on 21 November in Europe, about six weeks after the previously set date.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://blogs.battlefield.com/2014/07/bfh-will-launch-2015/">Battlefield Blog</a>, <a href="http://www.dragonage.com/#!/en_US/news/dragon-age-inquisition-update">Dragon Age: Inquisition</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/battlefield-hardline/review">Battlefield Hardline: First Play preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ex1GlZS-t7c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Watch LG’s 18in rollable OLED screen folded up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Just a couple weeks back, we heard about LG&rsquo;s amazing super-flexible display&mdash;an 18in OLED screen running at 1200 x 810 that can be rolled into a tube with a diameter of 3cm. Plasma fans: now may be the time to grab the biggest and best model you can afford, as it will probably be the last.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-reportedly-ending-plasma-tv-production/">CNET</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-ps51f5500/review">Samsung PS51F5500 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Lindsay Lohan sues over perceived GTA5 parody </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Nearly a year after its release, Grand Theft Auto 5 remains our pick for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apps-and-games/console-games/top-ten">top console game</a> in the world right now&mdash;and it&rsquo;s been a massive success, with more than 33 million copies shipped to stores and Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC versions still on the horizon (due out this autumn).</p> <p>However, &ldquo;mo&rsquo; money, mo&rsquo; problems,&rdquo; as the ancient proverb goes, and publisher Rockstar Games has an interesting one of the latter on its hands. Other titles like Soulcalibur, Leo&rsquo;s Fortune, and Badland were seen on the display, and it&rsquo;s likely that a wide range of top Android games will be tweaked to become TV-friendly.</p> <p>Powerful voice search is one of the biggest advantages of Android TV, as you can say something like &ldquo;Oscar-nominated movies from 2002&rdquo; (as demonstrated in the keynote) and get accurate results. And within any results, you can dig deeper to find out actors and actresses, peruse their other roles, see relevant YouTube clips, and more.</p> <p>Android TV also features full Google Cast support, so you can fling content from your phone or tablet and treat it like a Chromecast.</p> <p>Asus and Razer are working on Android TV set top boxes that will debut this fall, while the 2015 Smart TV lines from Sony, Sharp, and Philips will also feature it. Developers can get their hands on the SDK tomorrow to begin adapting their apps and games to play nice with Google&rsquo;s big-screen interface, and Google is also making available a test set top box to help them optimize their experiences for upcoming hardaware.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-io-2014/8-things-you-need-know-about-android-l/news">8 things you need to know about Android L</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="671" title="NBA Jam" alt="NBA Jam" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/androidtv-nbajam.png?1403746138" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-io-2014/android-tv-targeting-set-top-boxes-smart-tvs-starting-autumn/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-io-2014/android-tv-targeting-set-top-boxes-smart-tvs-starting-autumn/news#comments Android Film and TV Google Google I/O 2014 TVs Wed, 25 Jun 2014 21:57:00 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1440124 at http://www.stuff.tv Fully Charged: The smart cup that knows what you drink, a massive £1 million TV, and Tesla Motors gifts its electric tech to the world http://www.stuff.tv/tesla/fully-charged-smart-cup-knows-what-you-drink-massive-1-million-tv-and-tesla-motors-open-source <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Begin the end of the workweek with a look at the coolest tech news around </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Vessyl" alt="Vessyl" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/vessyl.jpg?1402652530" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Vessyl is a smart cup that can ID (and track) your beverages </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Tracking food and drinks is an extremely helpful way to manage your daily caloric intake and try to get fit, but having to manually enter everything tends to derail even the best of intentions for busy, tech-savvy folks. You can get in touch via Titan&rsquo;s website, though it&rsquo;s unclear if you&rsquo;ll be able to get the Zeus in time to see the last bits of the World Cup on the football goal-sized screen.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.titanscreens.com">Titan</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tvs/top-ten">The 10 best TVs in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Titan Zeus" alt="Titan Zeus" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/titan-zeustv.jpg?1402652530" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tesla Motors opens up its electric car patents to all </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Few tech CEOs exude cool quite like billionaire Elon Musk, who heads up both SpaceX and Tesla Motors, and he proved it again yesterday by penning a post entitled, <a href="http://www.teslamotors.com/blog/all-our-patent-are-belong-you">&ldquo;All Our Patent Are Belong to You&rdquo;</a>&mdash;in which he declared Tesla&rsquo;s electric car patents to be effectively open source.</p> <p>&ldquo;Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport,&rdquo; reads the post. &ldquo; If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal.
