Stuff September 2012

It’s the big one. The Royale with Cheese. The stretch Hummer of tech questions. No bickering about whose smartphone is slimmer. No figure-mongering with endless app statistics or ‘market penetration’. The September issue is about the multi-faceted struggle between the three most important tech companies on the planet today: Apple, Google and Microsoft.

Each has something new to shout about: Google has the Nexus tablet and Jelly Bean OS; Apple has the Retina MacBook and iOS 6; Microsoft is incinerating its whole ecosystem and starting afresh with Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and the lovely Surface tablet. Each has a renewed shot at world domination – but which will achieve it?

We’re just as focused this month on answering nicer questions, such as ‘Which apps should I download for my holiday?’, ‘Which electric vehicle would I buy?’, ‘What’s next for photography?’, and ‘Should I get an iPad or a Nexus 7?’.
Oh, and ‘Will 3D printing transform our concept of physical products
and decimate traditional manufacturing just as digital music did the major labels?’.

This issue was brought to you by…

-Vauxhall’s smartphone-brained supercar
-A £250 remote control spyplane
-A burrito-making robot, geek-friendly holiday reads
-A hyper-realistic Boeing flight simulator
-Ivy Bridge-powered laptops
...and a guide to indie games.
