There was cacophony here at Stuff Towers, the night the iPad Mini launched. In part this was because the rotation of the Earth made that early-morning California launch an evening post-beer party. But for the most part the sound was a symphony of hmms and ehs?, as Apple chose to be bridesmaid, not bride, by launching a ‘small’ tablet that was bigger, lower-res and more expensive than rivals – although none the less desirable for it. It takes on its 7in rivals in this month’s Supertest.

One of those rivals is the Google Nexus 7, and it’s joined in this issue by the better-than-Retina Nexus 10 tablet and the LG-made Nexus 4, which we’re happy to declare the best ever sub-£300 smartphone. Santa’s going to be making lots of trips to Google HQ this Christmas.

Speaking of which: you’ll find a gargantuan gift guide, as well as a programme to the tablet, phone and PC panto that is Windows 8. And with some eye-exploding trick photo guides, it’s time to put your Christmas cameras to work…

The fully-interactive Stuff iPad and iPhone edition is available to download from the app store or via Newsstand now. If you have any issues, the answer may be in the frequently asked questions page.
