If we were to sum up the Cool List in a single word, it would  be ‘smorgasbord’. If we were allowed three more, they might be ‘of the future’. That’s what this annual event is all about – honouring the things that are making the Stuff team most excited because of their vision, their desirability, or just the fact that they made us double-take. ‘Unlikely’ is another word we’d like to add.

The Cool List contains a comic, an aeroplane, a game about moving boxes and not one but two printers. But despite how that sounds, this year’s list is undoubtedly the most thrilling yet. So, take a look now for our unlikely smorgasbord of the future (not to be confused with Heston Blumenthal’s take on the continental breakfast).

Elsewhere this month, more excitement. Apple launched what could just be the best laptop ever (the Retina Display MacBook Pro),  Microsoft has peppered the tablet mix with its own amazing Windows 8 kit and Google has quietly steeled its grip on the smartphone crown in our superphones group test.
