Pretty much all of the major smartphone players have turned their, er, hand to making wristputers this year, with the likes of Samsung, Apple, Sony, LG and Motorola all announcing or releasing their own devices.</p> <p>Google&#39;s also thrown its hat into the ring, developing the Android Wear operating system as a means of giving the fledgling market some consistency.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-williams" title="View user profile.">Andrew Williams</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Design: Casio vs Cartier </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Looks matter in a smartwatch. This is something you&rsquo;re going to wear on your wrist, most of the day, every day.</p> <p>Both the Moto 360 and G Watch R have gone for a slightly more natural look than many, with a circular face. Most of the square or rectangular smartwatches we&rsquo;ve seen are that bit too geeky-looking.</p> <p>LG has tried pretty hard to make the G Watch R look like a normal watch &ndash; complete with fake winder dial and a screen surround with minute markers. In photos, it looks pretty great. However, in person there&rsquo;s a whiff of the try-hard to the LG G Watch R. The more it attempts to look like a standard watch, the clearer it becomes that this really isn&rsquo;t one.&nbsp; It&rsquo;s that bit too clear you&rsquo;re looking at an LCD display, not a real watch face.</p> <p>The Motorola Moto 360, on the other hand, embraces the &lsquo;new technology&rsquo; vibe. Its screen surround is bright metal, offering a more up-to-date look.</p> <p>Will it age more quickly, style-wise? Possibly, but the tech in this area is moving so fast that it&rsquo;s not just something that affects the design. We&#39;re in early adopter territory, folks.</p> <p>If you want a watch that&rsquo;s going to impress, there&rsquo;s only one right choice here: the Moto 360.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s thankfully not <em>too</em> eye-catching, though. It attracts attention, rather than demanded it. You can still get pretty normal-looking and feeling straps for the Moto 360 too. And you can choose between metal links and a leather strap, although leather straps seem to be more widely available.</p> <p>Exactly the same strap options are on offer with the LG G Watch R too: metal and leather.</p> <p>Judging by the watches we&rsquo;ve seen so far, a round face is the way forward. However, the Motorola has the courage of its design convictions. And that extra confidence shows.</p> <p>For the spec lovers among you, the Moto 360 weighs 49g while the LG G Watch R is 63g. Both have fairly chunky watch faces too.</p> <p>The Moto&rsquo;s is 46mm diameter by 11.5mm tall, the LG G watch R 46.4 by 11.1mm tall. There&rsquo;s not a great deal in it.</p> <p>Both offer IP67 water resistance. This means you can drop them in water for a half-hour without ill effects, but we don&rsquo;t recommend submitting them to more than a heavy downpour. Google even warns you not to take the Moto 360 out swimming, on the Google Play page. Don&rsquo;t say we didn&rsquo;t warn you.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Motorola Moto 360</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We get a-round, round, round..." alt="Which smartphone is best: Motorola Moto 360 vs LG G Watch R" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/watches_0.jpg?1415810885" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: Cut that out </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Motorola Moto 360 and LG G Watch R both have circular screens. But one is more circular than the other.</p> <p>Confused? Just check out the very bottom of the Motorola Moto 360 display: there&rsquo;s a little blank section, which is where the display driver has to go.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s a real shame, and something that chips off some of the glossy look. It&rsquo;s also something people might not notice when just researching to buy one. Take note.</p> <p>The LG G Watch R display is fully rounded - no weird chips or cut-outs.</p> <p>It also offers more impressive-looking display tech. Where the Moto 360 uses a fairly standard LCD screen, the G Watch R has an P-OLED (plastic organic light emitting diode) display, capable of providing black levels that LCDs just aren&rsquo;t capable of. When the watch face wants to look black, it really is black &ndash;&nbsp;aside from whatever ambient light might be reflecting off the surface.</p> <p>Unfortunately the Moto 360&rsquo;s LCD display also highlights that there&rsquo;s a bit cut out of the display, as you can see the difference between the back of the surround and the imperfect black of the display. Roll on Motorola Moto 360 MK II? Kinda.</p> <p>Both watches offer similar resolutions, with 320 pixels across the display, cut down to 290 pixels in one direction in the Moto 360 because of the screen indent. As the screens are pretty small, that&#39;s enough pixels to make the screens pretty sharp. Once again, the LG G Watch R has the advantage, if only because its 1.3-inch display is smaller than the 1.56-inch Moto one.</p> <p>Will you get used to the slightly strange Moto 360 screen shape? Of course you will, but it&rsquo;s slightly at odds with the otherwise pristine design.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: LG G Watch R</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-x-2014/review">The Motorola Moto X is our new favourite smartphone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="It&#039;s round... but there&#039;s a bit missing!" alt="Which smartphone is best: Motorola Moto 360 vs LG G Watch R" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-scr_0.jpg?1415810885" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery: Totally Phone-y </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;ve not looked into smartwatches too much yet, we have bad news: 95% of them don&rsquo;t last too long off a charge. If you&rsquo;re hoping for weeks or months of use, you&rsquo;re dreaming.</p> <p>Both the LG G Watch R and Motorola Moto 360 offer stamina that&rsquo;s similar to that of a phone.</p> <p>Once again, this is one area where the LG Watch R wins a victory, but it&rsquo;s a slighter one this time.</p> <p>At release, the Motorola Moto 360 had really quite terrible battery life, but after a few smart software updates you&rsquo;ll be able to get a solid day and a half&rsquo;s use off a charge.</p> <p>The LG G Watch R can be pushed to a full two days if you&rsquo;re very careful and don&rsquo;t go using the watch too much. We&rsquo;re in the same league here: if you want a much longer-lasting watch, check out the Pebble. There&#39;s just that bit of extra buffer in the LG.</p> <p>So why does the LG last that bit longer? There are several reasons. The simplest: it has a larger battery. Where the Motorola Moto 360 unit offers 320mAh capacity, the G Watch R has a 410mAh battery.</p> <p>The LG Watch also offers a more up-to-date processor, using the same Snapdragon 400-series chip you&rsquo;ll find in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-moto-g/review">Motorola Moto G</a>. You might assume a lower-power chip like the Moto 360&rsquo;s single-core TI OMAP 3 CPU would be more frugal, but that&rsquo;s not the case: it&rsquo;s older and not as efficient as the LG chipset.</p> <p>The G Watch R screen technology is also a massive win here. As P-OLED screens use light emitting pixels rather than a backlight like the Moto 360&rsquo;s LCD screen, the watch is able to use just a fraction of its usual power when displaying just a small amount of stuff onscreen. It does this in an &lsquo;Ambient Mode&rsquo; that kicks in when the watch hasn&rsquo;t been used for a few seconds.</p> <p>You get such a mode with the Moto 360 too, but it&rsquo;s not as efficient. &nbsp;</p> <p>As we noted earlier, now that Motorola has fixed the early battery issues, the stamina of the two is not worlds apart. And you charge them in similar ways: each comes with a little charge dock.</p> <p>However, what&rsquo;s going on behind the scenes is actually quite different. The LG Watch R uses little metal contacts that directly interface with the dock while the Moto 360 supports Qi charging. This is the most common wireless charging standard these days, and means you&rsquo;ll be able to use the Motorola smartwatch with a bunch of third-party wireless chargers. Nice.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: LG G Watch R</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Moto 360 charges wirelessly, but the G Watch R goes for longer" alt="Which smartphone is best: Motorola Moto 360 vs LG G Watch R" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-backs_0.jpg?1415810885" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: Snapdragon power wins out </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As well as having a more efficient processor than the Motorola Moto 360, the LG G Watch R is also more powerful. It offers four 1.2GHz cores against the Moto&rsquo;s single 1GHz core.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s more to it than that if you deep-dive into the tech, but still: there&rsquo;s no contest.</p> <p>In use, we found that there were little laggy moments in the Moto 360 that were cleared-up in the LG G Watch R. Motorola may be able to patch some of this up in future updates, but you can&rsquo;t patch-up the use of an older processor.</p> <p>If you can stomach the odd little bit of slow-down, the two watches are capable of completely the same things. They both run Android Wear, Google&rsquo;s smartphone OS, both have a heart-rate sensor, microphone and operate using a Bluetooth 4.0 connection with your phone.</p> <p>Neither has a camera &ndash;&nbsp;something that has sensibly been demoted as a bit of a gimmick in a watch.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re still waiting to see what the Android Wear future is going to look like, but with a bit more power on tap, the LG G Watch R feels more primed for its arrival.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: LG G Watch R</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The G Watch R has a more powerful processor" alt="Which smartphone is best: Motorola Moto 360 vs LG G Watch R" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-comp_0.jpg?1415810885" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict: Style matters </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;ve read through our whole comparison, you may well have come to the conclusion that the LG Watch R is the clear winner. We have a surprise for you: it&rsquo;s not.</p> <p>While the LG G Watch R can claim a series of small victories, we don&rsquo;t think they eclipse the design superiority of the Motorola Moto 360.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s a lot to be improved in a successor, and there are still improvements to be made in the software for this generation. But the Moto 360 is a watch you can feel proud to wear. That matters an awful lot in the watch world, and in comparison the LG G Watch R just seems a bit&hellip; normal. &nbsp; It also helps that the Moto 360 is available for &pound;20 less at &pound;200, while feeling like the more expensive device. </p> <p>That said, if you want the absolute best performance in a smartwatch then the LG G Watch R is still the better choice. It&#39;s marginally faster, the screen isn&#39;t notched and the battery life is superior. But in this office, we feel that design is such an important part of a smartwatch&#39;s appeal that overall we&#39;d still go for the Moto 360. It&#39;s a mighty close thing.</p> <p><strong><em>Winner: Motorola Moto 360</em></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/wearable-tech/top-ten">Stuff&#39;s Top 10 smartwatches and wearables</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="And the winner is... the Moto 360!" alt="Which smartphone is best: Motorola Moto 360 vs LG G Watch R" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/stuff-gadget-awards-2014-motorola-moto-360_1.jpg?1415810885" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Moto 360 v G Watch R </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola-moto-360-vs-lg-g-watch-r/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/motorola-moto-360-vs-lg-g-watch-r/feature#comments Android Wear G Watch R LG Moto 360 Motorola Smartwatches Wed, 05 Nov 2014 18:41:25 +0000 Andrew Williams 1452154 at http://www.stuff.tv Motorola Droid Turbo http://www.stuff.tv/droid-turbo/motorola-droid-turbo/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> UPDATE 30/10/14: Motorola confirms the phone&#039;s specs – and a pesky exclusivity deal with Verizon </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Motorola Droid Turbo" alt="Motorola Droid Turbo" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/motorola-droid-turbo-back-front.jpg?1414680212" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/hafizahosman" title="View user profile.">Hafizah Osman</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>Motorola isn&#39;t exactly playing its cards close to its chest with its upcoming&nbsp;Droid Turbo smartphone.</p> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-pricing"><legend>Pricing</legend><div class="field field-type-number-float field-field-test-price"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> £-1.00 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-price-from"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-ratings"><legend>Ratings</legend><div class="field field-type-hcmreviewrating-rating field-field-overall-rating"> <div class="field-label">Overall rating:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="hcmrating-default"> stars</div> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>Review Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Leaked photos on <a href="http://androidspin.com/2014/10/22/droid-turbo-images-slightly-blurry-but-you-get-the-idea/" target="_blank">Android Spin</a>&nbsp;confirm some of the above details, revealing that the Droid Turbo packs 3GB RAM and a 2560x1440 display, along with 32GB internal storage. Then maybe you should consider the company&rsquo;s latest smartphone, the all-new Motorola Droid Turbo. It&rsquo;s essentially a Moto X on steroids.</p> <p>Where to start? Well, there&rsquo;s a 5.2in AMOLED screen with a 2560 x 1440 resolution (565ppi), a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked at 2.7GHz and 3GB of RAM. It comes with 32GB of storage, except for the premium Black Ballistic Nylon model which offers 64GB.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Droid Turbo has what Motorola describes as &ldquo;the largest battery of any smartphone&rdquo;, giving it a claimed two full days of normal use on a single charge. It&rsquo;s also quick-charging, with a 15-minute boost giving it eight hours of life.</p> <p>The rear-facing camera sports a 21MP sensor, f/2.0 aperture, dual LED flash and 4K video capture, and there&rsquo;s a 2MP front-facer too.</p> <p>There are three finishes available: high-end Black Ballistic Nylon; and &ldquo;metalised&rdquo; Kevlar in either black or red. All models have a water-repellant nanocoating to ward off raindrops and splashes (they&rsquo;re not fully waterproof, so don&rsquo;t go dunking them in the bath).</p> <p>The Motorola Droid Turbo looks fantastic on paper, doesn&rsquo;t it? But before you reach for your credit card, you should know that the phone is currently exclusive to US network Verizon, and there are no indications of when, if ever, it&rsquo;ll make its way to the UK. It has personality - if you want it to.</p> <p>Moto Maker, Motorola&#39;s pre-order customisation service, has got bigger and better thanks to more options, international orders and photo realistic renders. With lovely soft-touch plastic, real leather and FSC-certified wood rear panels to choose from, plus thousands of accent colour combinations, three iPhone options starts to look stingy.</p> <p>Whatever you choose, you get an impressively engineered sleek and solid build, white or black front panel, the Motorola logo dimple and a new aluminium frame that&#39;s lighter on the white model and a darker titanium on the black model. If you&rsquo;ve really converted to Moto this year, that means you can pair your Moto X with a similarly hued Moto 360 smartwatch. You fashion darling, you.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-360/motorola-moto-360/review">The Moto 360 is the end of bad smartwatch design&nbsp;</a></strong></p> <p>It&#39;s worth noting that the regular black resin model is a bit of a steal at &pound;420 but other materials cost more. The real leather version starts at &pound;440 and the wood Moto X starts at &pound;460. You won&#39;t regret it if you splash out, though we hear that the leather model needs a bit of TLC to keep it tidy.</p> <p>This is a big phone that doesn&#39;t feel big. From the front it looks a bit like an LG G3 - another smartphone that&#39;s serious about not wasting space. Neither are truly &quot;edge to edge&quot; but with bezels this skinny we&#39;re not complaining. The G3&#39;s screen is a touch bigger, at 5.5in, but the Moto X does come in both slightly smaller and slightly lighter at 145g. And as Moto points out, it&#39;s the same width as the Galaxy S5 with a bigger screen.</p> <p>As with the first Moto X it feels well made. It&#39;s also splash-resistant - not quite waterproof but better than nothing. Thanks to a shallow curve it sits nicely in the hand despite the fact that the 2014 edition is bigger in both dimensions.</p> <p>But this could be the first 4.7in plus phone that smaller hands find manageable. You can just about get a thumb across to the top corners. It&#39;s perfectly stable and balanced in the hand and the microUSB socket, nanoSIM slot and headphone jack are located top and bottom, leaving the tapered sides clutter-free. Only the power button and volume rocker grace the right-hand edge, with the power button textured to make it easier to identify with only your digits.</p> <p>So Motorola outclasses both Samsung and LG in the design department. And boy does it compete on components, too.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Moto X (2014) hands on review " alt="Moto X (2014) hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5078.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Moto X (2014) hands on review " alt="Moto X (2014) hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5081.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Moto X (2014) hands on review " alt="Moto X (2014) hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5039.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Moto X (2014) hands on review " alt="Moto X (2014) hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5055.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Awesome AMOLED </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There&#39;s simply no weak link in the Moto X&#39;s spec sheet. Unlike last year when the Moto X&#39;s admittedly lovely 720p display was outgunned by Full HD screen after Full HD screen, this year it matches many of the flagships on pixel count.</p> <p>OK, LG and Samsung have raced ahead with 2K screens on the G3 and Note 4. But many others including HTC and Sony have stuck with 1080p and these by no means feel like second class screens. The Moto X is 424ppi so text looks seriously smooth and pics look sharp. The LG offers more detail in hi-res photos and video but you&#39;ll only notice it with your face right up to the screens, eyeballs flitting from one to the other. In which case you may get odd glances on the train.</p> <p>This is an AMOLED display and you should know what that means. Colours are on the punchier side of the spectrum, without looking too alien; deep, deep blacks put the iPhone and LG to shame and viewing angles are great. The pixels look very close to the glass too - not quite iPhone-close but close.</p> <p>The downside of AMOLED colours is that from certain angles whites can look a bit yellow. If you spend a lot of time on emails and webpages this will start to grate, though we have heard promising whispers on the web of different units having slightly different colour temperatures.</p> <p>Our favourite bit about the screen, though? What it does when it&#39;s off. Really.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Samsung Galaxy Note 4 review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Strikes a good punch" alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxscreen2.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" title="Motorola Moto X (2014) review" alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxscreen.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> This is the future: simple, smart and sensorific </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Motorola&rsquo;s always-on sensors, controls and software debuted on the first Moto X but have really come into their own on this year&rsquo;s specced-up hardware.</p> <p>If you love Google, you&rsquo;ll love the Moto X. This phone is all about making Google&#39;s powerful services constantly available and useful. The scarily clever Google Now launcher can be accessed with a swipe to the right from the main homescreen, as with the Nexus. Motorola (unlike Samsung and Sony) keeps things simple by not doubling up on media services - there&rsquo;s just the Play Store, Play Music, Movies and Books. Nothing here is as pretty as the likes of HTC&rsquo;s Sense 6 but with the incoming Android L update, Google&rsquo;s new Material Design will spruce the aesthetics up.</p> <p>Apart from a few extremely useful, forward-thinking apps, which are helpfully bundled together in the Moto app, this is pretty much pure Android KitKat (until L arrives). You choose what to set up. There are a few tutorials that pop up on how to activate features but these are easily ignored.</p> <p>As we just hinted, our favourite of the bunch is the battery-saving Moto Display, which shows monochrome notifications on the lockscreen when your hand approaches it, triggering up to three app icons. Touching each app bubble shows a preview of notifications at a glance and swiping down unlocks the handset. Being an AMOLED screen the black pixels, which fill the majority of the screen, don&rsquo;t draw any power and it can&rsquo;t be activated in pockets or face down. &nbsp;Combined with the Moto X&rsquo;s subtle haptics, checking Moto Display makes for one of those addictive little habits much like Touch ID on the iPhone.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s more. Motorola uses its sensors much like Samsung does to turn the screen off when you&rsquo;re not looking at it - here it&rsquo;s called Attentive Display. Calls and alarms can be silenced and snoozed with a wave of a hand, too. That&rsquo;s nothing entirely new but it&rsquo;s worth confirming that both work perfectly.</p> <p>Motorola has its own unique tricks. Touchless voice controls return so that the X picks up your voice commands even when the screen is off and you&rsquo;re up to three feet away. A very cool tweak is that you can now change the command phrase from &lsquo;OK Google&rsquo; to anything you like - as long as it&rsquo;s a certain number of syllables. &lsquo; What&rsquo;s up doc?&rsquo; is too short, for instance, but &lsquo;Hey Samantha&rsquo; is fine.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-hint/ifa-2014/moto-hint-tiny-voice-controlled-earbud-future/news">Motorola&rsquo;s wireless earbud from the future, Moto Hint&nbsp;</a></strong></p> <p>The most impressive thing is how seamlessly it all works together. The motion sensors register your hand hovering over the phone every single time so that by the time you&rsquo;ve picked it up, Moto Display is onscreen. Voice works well with the different modes in Moto Assist, including home, sleep, meeting and driving - say &lsquo;Good night&rsquo; to the phone and it will switch to a &lsquo;do not disturb&rsquo; sleep mode. There&rsquo;s plenty of further customisation to explore but it never descends into chaos. Lots of phone makers claim their Android skin is simple but here&rsquo;s the thing, Motorola&rsquo;s actually is.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Moto app with everything to tweak and tinker with " alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxassist2.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" title="It&#039;s simple really Tom " alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxmotodisplay.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4000" height="3000" title="Google knows what you want to read and watch " alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxgooglenow.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="4000" height="3000" title="Driving and home modes in Moto Assist " alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxassist.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> All day battery will get better with L </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Now, we&#39;re not saying smartphone makers should stop trying to improve on Android. Even on powerhouses such as the LG G3 you get tiny bits of lag here and there - on the X Motorola has basically eradicated it.</p> <p>Jumping around from Chrome to open apps to messages it&#39;s even a split second faster than the near flawless iPhone 6. The only thing Apple&#39;s finest is quicker at than the Moto X is firing up the camera app and finding focus. More on that in a bit.</p> <p>Why is it such a joy to use? And how does Moto perform that much smoother with similar silicon? We reckon that&rsquo;s the combination of Motorola&#39;s very limited and considered tinkering with Android and the Snapdragon 801 chip that&#39;s powering nearly every flagship smartphone worth buying in 2014.</p> <p>It&#39;s not 100% &lsquo;Pure Android&rsquo; - Moto has added voice and contextual bits and bobs here and there, as detailed above. But it&#39;s as close as you&#39;ll get on a non-Nexus, also bear in mind that the new Nexus is huge, and in day-to-day use it shines. The benchmarks back up our findings with the Moto X scoring an S5 and One M8-beating 44698 on AnTuTu - only the Note 4 bests it. &nbsp;</p> <p>In short, there&rsquo;s a select few gadgets that everyone trusts to just do the job reliably every time - the iPhone, the iPad, the Pebble, the Moto G. The Moto X joins that list.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5090.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxmutlitasking.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Motorola Moto X tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 5.2in 1080x1920 (424ppi)<br />Processor: Quad core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801<br />RAM: 2GB<br />OS: Android 4.4.4 (KitKat)<br />Camera: 13MP rear 4K video, 2MP rear 1080p video<br />Storage: 16GB, 32GB (non expandable)<br />Battery: 2300mAh<br />Connectivity: Wi-Fi, 3G/4G, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0<br />Dimensions: 140.8 x 72.4 x 10mm<br />Weight: 144g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Slightly outsnapped </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>How about the rest of those specs? More megapixels. Ring flash. 4K video. The second-gen Moto X pulls out all the stops with its new camera and is &hellip; almost, nearly, very close to matching the best superphones. So it&#39;s outsnapped by the best. But that doesn&#39;t mean the Moto X isn&#39;t capable of taking very, very good phone pics.</p> <p>There&#39;s a new 13MP sensor with an f/2.25 lens, which is a big improvement on the first Moto X&#39;s decent but not jaw dropping images. It takes clear, detailed shots in good light, has a handy quick-access HDR mode and reproduces colours accurately. That said, it can struggle with tricky exposures and miss focus from time to time. In these cases, it&#39;s best to choose the manual tap to focus option in the basic camera app rather than relying on autofocus. Then for the best results, just keep snapping either by tapping again or using the volume button. The very best smartphone cams are slightly quicker to autofocus, too. This is no S5 when it comes to rapid fire shooting and real enthusiasts will want more controls to play about with.</p> <p>Autofocus is much better when capturing 1080p video - with a maximum of 32GB storage, we wouldn&rsquo;t recommend shooting much 4K footage, although it is an option. Slow mo video, at 120fps, is just as easy to play around with - as on the iPhone 6 there&rsquo;s an idiot-proof slider to select the slowed down portion of your clip.</p> <p>At night and indoors, it&rsquo;s a mixed bag. The styled-up LED ring flash around the main camera is a new addition, designed to provide softer light than regular flashes. You&rsquo;re left with images that are less obviously taken with a flash than the equivalent samples from rivals such as the G3 and iPhone 6 - it&rsquo;s definitely kinder to your friends&#39; faces. </p> <p>Still, both of these phones do a better job in low light without flash. And that&rsquo;s much more useful. Images taken with the Moto are usable, if a little desaturated, but can look noisy and a bit smudgy at times, which is a bit of shame. A software update to tweak image quality, a la the Nexus 5 last year, would be very welcome here. </p> <p>For now, the Moto X detects faces and people/objects in motion (two tricky subjects) and automatically takes multiple shots before choosing which one it thinks is the best - in focus, no blinking etc. It doesn&rsquo;t result in perfect images every time but in one or two instances, it&rsquo;s proven its worth. </p> <p>Elsewhere, Moto joins HTC and Sony with its own auto video creation tool, Highlights Reel, which is a bit hidden away but allows you to change the clip length and use audio from the videos or a choice of music tracks. Around the front a 2MP camera takes 1080p video and can be commanded by voice to &#39;take a selfie&#39;, completing the set-up. And the wrist-twisting Quick Capture feature returns from last year. It works well, when you give it a second, and helps to keep your eyes on the scene.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8) - with Video Highlights - tested&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5063.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5072.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="Moto X (2014) hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5092.JPG?1416038696" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> How to make the Moto X even better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If we had one plea to Motorola it would be this: bring out a 64GB model for the Android fanboy and fangirl power users. The 4.5in, HD, 326ppi screen is the real selling point over its fuzzier-screened rivals; it matches the much pricier <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-mini-2-hands/review">HTC One Mini 2</a>&nbsp;on this front. Because otherwise you get a ton of Sony for your money here.</p> <p>Its blocky plastic design, available in purple, white and black, is based on the high-end <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-htc-one-m8-vs-sony-xperia-z2/feature/1-sony-xperia-z2">Xperia Z2</a>. There&rsquo;s no waterproofing as you&#39;d find on that premium Xperia, but for &pound;150 PAYG, we&rsquo;re not complaining.</p> <p>Performance is much better than previous mid-range Sony phones we&rsquo;ve encountered thanks to a Snapdragon 400 processor which powers every handset on this test bar the Moto E and HTC Desire 301. Battery life is pretty good, too, matching the Moto G 4G. Plus Sony has thrown in extras you won&rsquo;t find on other budget blowers such as small apps, Stamina mode for the battery and a pulsing notification light to stretch to over a day of use.</p> <p>Its more than decent 8MP camera is the highlight, though. AF can be a little sluggish but it&rsquo;s easy to use, with Sony&rsquo;s quick Superior Auto mode plus lots of settings to dig into and reliably good 1080p video. The 5in Moto G (2014) isn&#39;t a direct replacement for the 4G model or last year&#39;s handset (now priced at &pound;100). It&#39;s the Moto G for people who don&#39;t mind sacrificing a bit of battery life here, a splash of 4G there for a big screen and much better camera than the original 5MP snapper.</p> <p>So what&#39;s been improved? It performs just as fast as the first Moto G and Android is just as clutter-free. The main difference is the bigger build (it&#39;s the biggest here) - it&#39;s sturdy, though, and still sits nicely in the hand. It&#39;s sacrificed the old Moto G&#39;s neat, tidy look; there&#39;s just more plastic, so that couldn&#39;t be helped without impressive - and costly - engineering. But Moto has included some very decent (for the money) stereo speakers on the front. They don&#39;t match the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">One (M8)</a> but you won&#39;t be ashamed to use them in the back garden either.&nbsp;</p> <p>Battery life, again, isn&#39;t quite as great as the Moto G 4G. Streaming video on a commute, the bigger 5in screen sucks up 22% an hour versus the 4.5in phone&#39;s less worrying 16%. Still, it lasts the day so we&#39;re not complaining too much. Speaking of the screen, it&#39;s 720p and chances are you won&#39;t notice the slightly-less-sharp picture compared to the original. Colours are slightly more natural too.&nbsp;</p> <p>The real stars are the two new cameras, both welcome improvements. Images look a lot less blurry and smudgy than before with clear, in-focus shots and accurate colours. Video too is much more usable. The new 8MP cam on the back takes a while to focus at night but if you hold steady, you can get some impressive pics for a &pound;150 phone. Working with wrist trees - to illustrate the size of the smallest to biggest female wrists and the smallest to biggest male wrists - the team realised that a square display and a form overmoulded with rubber created large gaps where the straps met the body. The fit was better with the straps on hinges &ndash;&nbsp;but still not perfect.</p> <p>With the Model Shop&#39;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/3d-printers-go-head-printhead/feature" target="_blank">MakerBot Replicator</a>, alongside higher res Objet printers, designers could make low fidelity models on their lunch breaks. But they didn&#39;t just 3D print these square form factors, they spent time and energy making working models that each ran early versions of the software. UI screens and watch faces were also tweaked on-screen then printed onto the back of glass and slotted in to the prototype housing for usability and readability tests.</p> <p>Ultimately, though, none made the cut.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; These all feel like a gadget. They look like a gadget. So we said - we need to reset, we need to take a step back,&quot; says Dickon Isaacs, Design Director. </p> <p>We&#39;re beginning to think Motorola just 100% hates gadgets, when he explains the allure of the circle.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot;Time has always been a circle,&quot; says Isaacs as he points to a whiteboard with sketches of square screens, fully circular screens and Motorola&#39;s final choice. &quot;Sundials. The first pocket watch. Wristwatches. Analogue watches. 80 per cent of all watches sold globally are round.&nbsp;There&#39;s a lot of strength inherent in the material, stainless steel, but also, the circle is an incredibly strong structure from an engineering perspective.&quot;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Draw a watch and you get a circle " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-4_0_0.jpg?1410542684" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="See-through smartwatch! And in the last few months, rivals such as <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lg/lg-g-watch-r/review">LG&#39;s G Watch R</a>,&nbsp;with a truly round display, have popped up&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;but sporting chunkier bezels. We think Motorola made the right choice.</p> <p>The round display, round form factor and slim bezels wouldn&#39;t have been possible without the &#39;slice&#39;, as Moto execs call it. &quot; We could have put the drivers outside, that would make a perfectly round display but definitely not a round watch,&quot; says Lior Ron, VP Product Management. &quot; There would be drivers and big bezels outside the display.&quot; </p> <p>Explaining why Motorola didn&#39;t go the G Watch R route, Isaacs adds: &quot; If you design with this component but try to keep a pure object, it isn&#39;t compelling, it doesn&#39;t feel modern. The proportions of the border aren&#39;t great. We wanted something that felt more elegant.&quot; </p> <p>It also passes the wrist tree test, helping with the overall fit of the watch. Wicks tells us that the placement of the display drivers means that the watchbands can be attached closer to the centre of your wrist and this gives a more versatile range of comfortable fit across different wrist sizes.&nbsp;</p> <p>To fully &quot;achieve round&quot;, Motorola engineers had to build the custom display from scratch and work hard to fit the battery, processor and sensors into the circular, 11.5mm high housing.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Once Moto had agreed on round, then the real challenge began " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-8_0.jpg?1410542684" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Mike Yankey, our Moto tour guide, with an Objet printer and wearing Moto Hint" alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-13_0.jpg?1410542684" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The moment has arrived. Instead the team worked with the leather craftsmen, using the Pantone system as a reference, to match the colour target of the stainless steel bodies ending up with &quot;a whole host of greys and a range of subtleties in the blacks.&quot;</p> <p>No wonder it was a bit late.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Round screen, round body " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5098_0.JPG?1410542684" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Strapless 360 bodies " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-9_0.jpg?1410542684" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The quality of the materials used on the Moto 360 is lovely compared to, say, rubber bands but while the Moto 360 is the first watch to really get compared to analogue designs, it&#39;s still &#39;only&#39; &pound;200. We know that the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review">Apple Watch</a> <em>starts</em> at $350 but Apple&#39;s keeping schtum on how much the 18-karat gold Watch Edition will cost. Will we see a &pound;13,000 Moto 360? Or a cheaper watch?&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; This is day zero for us,&quot; says Isaacs. &quot; If there&#39;s people crying out for more variety through the price tiers, we&#39;ll go for it. We feel confident we&#39;ve started in the right place. If you start lower, it&#39;s harder to go up strategically.&quot;</p> <p>It&#39;s also worth noting that this is no <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/review">Pebble</a> in terms of its customisability. Alternative watchbands can be used with the 360 but it&#39;s not exactly being encouraged. It&#39;s a spring pin, a watch industry mechanism, so swapping between Motorola straps is easy enough. Straps will be sold separately in the US for US$29 for leather and US$99 for light and dark stainless steel - no UK prices for now.&nbsp;</p> <p>But Motorola won&#39;t guarantee performance, particularly with other metal straps. Its own straps have a plastic space to isolate the band and optimise the 360&#39;s antennas.&nbsp;</p> <p>The body comes in light grey or black steel and two leather band colours, black and grey, are available at launch. The first two stainless steel straps are coming soon and more colours and materials are promised. For now, Motorola doesn&#39;t want to overwhelm us and is instead sticking to this &quot;classical&quot; and &quot;timeless&quot; range. Then again, this is the company that created Moto Maker&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;which lets you customise your Moto X with almost any accent colour or material known to man.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="3D printed strap and the final stainless steel versions " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-5_0.jpg?1410542684" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As for the next-gen Moto 360, that&#39;s hiding behind the paper covering one of Motorola&#39;s nine CNC machines as we conclude our tour.&nbsp;</p> <p>If you&#39;re doing what a lot of tech blogs advise and sensibly waiting for &#39;Version 2&#39;, you won&#39;t be waiting too long. Moto execs won&#39;t be pressed on the next 360 release date but Isaacs hints that a year would be too long to wait for its second gen watch.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; We don&#39;t rest, so on to the next one!&quot; he grins. &quot; But not too soon. I don&#39;t want to comment on other people&#39;s strategy [we&#39;ve just asked about LG] but we want to create products that are enduring and have a sense of universal appeal that can make them last.</p> <p>Sometimes people style an object too much. We don&#39;t approach design that way, it&#39;s not a style exercise. It&#39;s about a blend of form and function to get to something that someone hopefully keeps for a long period of time.&quot;</p> <p>Seven days and counting for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-360/motorola-moto-360/review">Moto 360 </a>strapped to our wrists.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/wearable-tech/top-ten">Stuff&#39;s ten best wearables, fitness trackers and smartwatches</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Where Moto watchfaces are born " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-10_0.jpg?1410542684" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1199" height="900" title="Next-gen Moto watches in the CNC machine " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-11_0.jpg?1410542684" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Making the Moto 360 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Motorola tells us how to design a smartwatch </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-carousel-image-small"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item small image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_carousel_image_small" width="450" height="340" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-caro.jpg?1410542684" /> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/iwatch/how-not-design-smartwatch-moto-360-prototypes-didnt-make-cut/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/iwatch/how-not-design-smartwatch-moto-360-prototypes-didnt-make-cut/feature#comments Android Wear Google Moto 360 Motorola Smartwatches Watch Wearable tech Thu, 11 Sep 2014 15:49:03 +0000 Sophie Charara 1447084 at http://www.stuff.tv
