The early coral reef scenes bathed the room in a soothing blue-green light, while Nemo’s dash inside a deep-red anemone turned the whole room the colour of an overripe sea tomato (if such a thing exists, we're not marine biologists). It’s brilliantly immersive, although we can’t imagine it works so well on something like Zero Dark Thirty, a film that ends with approximately 25 minutes of blackness.</p><p>The Hue lamps and bulbs tap into whichever Ambilight zone you’ve told them they’re positioned nearest to, so the whole room can be splashed with multiple colours and shades. The brightness and the speed at which the lights change can be altered, although we found it best to keep the speed fairly slow, otherwise it feels a bit like you’re in a nightclub full of soft furnishings. We had them set so they changed a beat or two after the scene on-screen changed, which felt about right. Turn off the Ambilight functionality on the telly and your Hue bulbs go back to doing whatever you had them setup for before.</p><p>Before long it starts to feel completely normal; as if you’ve always watched movies like this. Turn it off and everything suddenly feels a bit flat. In fact, we’ve taken to watching Police, Camera, Action! with a flashing blue light on top of the telly and clutching a torch in the hope of recreating that Ambilight+Hue feel.</p> </div> </div> A festival of LED flashes also greets the satellites when freshly docked, and although Philips says they're dimmable, we worry they might be distracting.</p> <p>AV aficionados will scoff at the lack of control you get over in-depth settings, and could bemoan the fact that the front centre channel of 5.1 soundtracks is folded into the output of the mother speakers. So far, so standard, but it one-ups competition from Sony, Samsung and LG with three-sided Ambilight, the latest iteration of a fine Philips vintage that extends the picture with LED backlighting to the top and sides of the set.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-findlater" title="View user profile.">Will Findlater</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> TV, now with Dropbox </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The 65PFL9708 also offers Philips' new Cloud TV smart TV software running on a 6-core processor. Now this is neat. Your Philips TV can now access all of images, music and movies you have stored in Dropbox via the Cloud Explorer app, auto-organising playable files by media type. You get 4GB of free Dropbox storage if you register through the set, too - hardly competitive with the 50GB you'll get with a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review">Samsung Galaxy S4</a>, but better than nothing.</p> <p>Other elements of Cloud TV include Cloud Gaming (a gaming apps library) and 'TV 3.0', a Boxee-esque list of hundreds of online TV channels all accessible through the Cloud TV interface. We're awaiting further details on exactly which services are available, though Netflix and iPlayer will be present and correct.</p> <p>There's built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi to connect, which also supports Miracast for mirroring your Android phone's screen.</p> <p>The good news is the TV is available at the end of October. The bad news is that you might need to save a bit before you get one, as its RRP is £4500. That's far from crazy by 4K TV standards, but it's still quite crazy. It would seem that Apple wants to integrate the technology behind these apps into Maps in order to bolster the service against rivals like Google Maps (which already offers pretty impressive public transport information). Embark’s apps have apparently disappeared from Google Play, but are still available on iOS.
