They&#39;re arranged so that the top and bottom of the lamp emit more light, and glare from the side is kept to a minimum.</p> <p>The structure is initially reminiscent of an insect&#39;s compound eye, though the inspiration behind the design was something quite different. &quot; It looks like an insect&#39;s eye,&quot; says Wertel, &quot;but actually the starting point for this structure is Buckminster Fuller, the geodesic dome; and then we subdivided it to arrive at this structure. It&#39;s always nice for us to see the connection between mathematics and nature; so suddenly this Buckminster Fuller dome looks like an insect&#39;s eye.&quot;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" alt="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/philips-hue-02.jpg?1413283358" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Jan Wertel" alt="Jan Wertel" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/jan-wertel.jpg?1413283358" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>3D printing is currently being used to create some very distinctive designs &ndash; ones that show off the potential of the process to create previously-impossible shapes. Wertel doesn&#39;t see that lasting, however. &quot;It&#39;s still at the stage where you need to show that it&#39;s 3D printed; that&#39;s why it&#39;s so elaborate. And we like to experiment, so this is more of an experimental design.&quot; he notes. Some aspects of the design are also informed by the limitations of the manufacturing process. &quot; We have an understructure,&quot; Wertel says, &quot;and because of cost it&#39;s actually split in two parts, so you can stack them in the machine. And to hide the split line, we created an outer structure.&quot;</p> <p>&quot;Even the surface structure that we added was there to hide any mistakes that the printer makes,&quot; he adds; otherwise, the rough texture of the laser-sintered polyamide wouldn&#39;t sit right next to the smooth, sculpted designs of the Hue range.</p> <p>Those limitations will eventually be overcome, though; and the elaborate designs of 3D printed products will give way to more everyday products. &quot;I just repaired my Bugaboo by printing a part, so this is like a sensible use of the technology which is growing and growing,&quot; Wertel says. &quot;It&#39;s really like the boundaries between consumer and producer are becoming blurred.&quot;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" alt="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/philips-hue-03.jpg?1413283358" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" alt="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/philips-hue-04.jpg?1413283358" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" alt="Philips Hue Entity luminaire" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/philips-hue-05.jpg?1413283358" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Before that happens, though, more well-known brands are incorporating 3D printing into their products. Its connected, energy efficient lights act as proximity sensors to track shoppers directly below them so there&#39;s no need for any additional hardware. The Visible Light Communication system is more accurate than iBeacons, tracking humans to within 1m.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It works like this: the LEDs are switched on and off, faster than the human eye can detect, to send a unique code to your smartphone&#39;s camera.</p> <p>This identifies the exact luminaire (light) above you and the lights will not send a signal when your phone is pocketed or in a bag. The front camera has to be facing upwards for the transfer to happen and the clever Philips lights can track the direction customers are moving in too.&nbsp;</p> <p>It works both ways. Office workers can control the lights directly above them via an app, customers can find things indoors with a GPS-like system and the lights themselves communicate the customers&#39; locations. This allows retailers, museums or sports stadiums to push offers, discounts or recipes to shoppers or visitors when they need them most.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Visible Light Communication set up is already being implemented. Buildings such as The Edge (which opens in Amsterdam in October) will use it to centrally control thousands of lights as well as letting office workers connect to the lights via an app. A pilot project in the Boerhaave Museum, also in The Netherlands, used the intelligent LEDs to determine visitors&#39;&nbsp;extra content on tablets as visitors made their way around the exhibits. <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/hue/party-street-holland-turning-nights-out-live-light-experiment/news">This party street in The Netherlands is turning nights out into a live lighting experiment</a></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="3264" height="2448" title="Using the iPad front camera to read the signal from the lights" alt="Using the iPad front camera to read the signal from the lights" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0390.JPG?1412219722" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="3264" height="2448" title="Office workers can tweak colours, tones and intensities of overhead lights" alt="Office workers can tweak colours, tones and intensities of overhead lights" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0313.JPG?1412219722" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/so-long-ibeacons-why-philips-genius-lights-could-win-indoor-gps-war/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/so-long-ibeacons-why-philips-genius-lights-could-win-indoor-gps-war/news#comments Apple Maps Navigation Philips Wed, 01 Oct 2014 13:51:29 +0000 Sophie Charara 1449049 at http://www.stuff.tv This party street in The Netherlands is turning nights out into a live light experiment http://www.stuff.tv/hue/party-street-holland-turning-nights-out-live-light-experiment/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hue escapes the home as Philips&#039; connected coloured streetlights prepare to stop drunken brawls </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The site of the Philips Eindhoven experiment " alt="The site of the Philips Eindhoven experiment " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/IMG_0314.JPG?1412164665" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Every weekend up to fifteen thousand people come to the Stratumseind in Eindhoven to party.&nbsp;</p> <p>They&#39;re mostly between the ages of 16 and 25 and the 250m long strip is home to over 60 bars and cafes. As Philips&#39; Hans von Dlemm puts it, the party street is &ldquo;a cocktail of alcohol, hormones and drugs&rdquo; and police record over 800 fights, brawls and insult-ridden arguments (all known as escalations) per year.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Welcome to the Living Lab </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Two sets of customers pay at a till. The first group paid in a warm, white light and the second in a very cool light.</p> <p>In collaboration with the municipality of Eindhoven and the Intelligent Lighting Institute at Eindhoven University of Technology (which conducted the cash register research), Philips is fitting the Stratumseind&#39;s 25 streetlights with connected, controllable RBG lightbulbs in a bid to make barhoppers behave more like those first customers. The project, which will run for four years, is named &ldquo;De-escalate&rdquo; and the Stratumseind the &ldquo;Living Lab&rdquo;.</p> <p>&ldquo;Research on behaviour in different types of light has been done but never outdoors and never on this scale,&rdquo; says von Dlemm. &ldquo;People start behaving differently when there&#39;s a low light level, they feel like they&#39;re not noticed and do all sorts of things they wouldn&#39;t usually do.</p> <p>In the home, we have Philips&#39; Living Colours and Hue bulbs that influence atmosphere. So it was logical to see how it could influence the outdoor atmosphere. We feel that coloured lighting can have a positive effect on escalations.&rdquo;</p> <p>Tweaking will involve the colour, tone and intensity of the lights and won&#39;t actually begin until November but the Stratumseind already has a system in place to increase the brightness of streetlights from 5 lux to 20 lux when there&#39;s an incident. This helps the police and medical staff to do their jobs properly but also means that crowds gather to have a look.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; They say &#39;Something&#39;s going on over there.&quot; One thing we&#39;re going to do research on is how to get people out of there. They track the density of people moving around the area, they have 3D sound measurement tools to record decibel levels, counting cameras at the entrance and exits to the street (which only quantify the number of people and don&#39;t store images) and GPS data for the medical teams in the area so that they can show up on the real time map used by the researchers.&nbsp;</p> <p>Bar owners also provide information ahead of time helping the team to prepare for a football match or big dance event and both bar owners and the police submit alerts when there is an incident.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Stratumseind lighting controllers are also working on an algorithm, based on police reports, to determine the prime conditions for an escalation. &quot;It&#39;s really important to look at the data and see what it means. You&#39;d think more escalations happen in summer but it&#39;s winter,&quot; says von Dlemm. &quot; You could say an escalation occurred when it was 10 degrees C, when the density of people was X amount per square metre, when the sound measurement was X many decibels. Then you can create an algorithm to say - this is the perfect situation for an escalation.&quot;&nbsp;</p> <p>The experiment will begin in November when the team will have permission to manipulate the lighting at certain times of day and night.</p> <p>We don&#39;t envy them. There&rsquo;s a wireless subwoofer too, to provide those neighbour-bothering low-end bass sounds.</p> <p><strong>And the centre speaker?</strong><br />That comes courtesy of clever psychoacoustic tech. The early coral reef scenes bathed the room in a soothing blue-green light, while Nemo’s dash inside a deep-red anemone turned the whole room the colour of an overripe sea tomato (if such a thing exists, we're not marine biologists). It’s brilliantly immersive, although we can’t imagine it works so well on something like Zero Dark Thirty, a film that ends with approximately 25 minutes of blackness.</p><p>The Hue lamps and bulbs tap into whichever Ambilight zone you’ve told them they’re positioned nearest to, so the whole room can be splashed with multiple colours and shades. The brightness and the speed at which the lights change can be altered, although we found it best to keep the speed fairly slow, otherwise it feels a bit like you’re in a nightclub full of soft furnishings. We had them set so they changed a beat or two after the scene on-screen changed, which felt about right. Turn off the Ambilight functionality on the telly and your Hue bulbs go back to doing whatever you had them setup for before.</p><p>Before long it starts to feel completely normal; as if you’ve always watched movies like this. Turn it off and everything suddenly feels a bit flat. In fact, we’ve taken to watching Police, Camera, Action! with a flashing blue light on top of the telly and clutching a torch in the hope of recreating that Ambilight+Hue feel.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Eyes-on with Philips Ambilight+Hue" alt="Eyes-on with Philips Ambilight+Hue" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LivingColors-LightStrips-Room-Lifestyle.jpg?1385563647" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Eyes-on with Philips Ambilight+Hue" alt="Eyes-on with Philips Ambilight+Hue" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/9708-berlin.jpg?1385563647" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Philips Ambilight+Hue: Eyes-on </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> We get eyes-on with Philips Ambilight+Hue </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/philips/eyes-philips-ambilighthue/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/philips/eyes-philips-ambilighthue/feature#comments Philips Thu, 21 Nov 2013 11:16:39 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1429293 at http://www.stuff.tv
