That may be what&rsquo;s ahead, as The Wall Street Journal and The Information report that Google has worked out deals with major carriers to sell service under its own name.</p> <p>That means that Google wouldn&rsquo;t actually control or own the cellular service, but instead lease it out and rebrand it - and potentially offer different and better terms for customers. According to the reports, U.S. carriers Sprint and T-Mobile have agreed to offer their networks for Google to package and resell to customers, although it&rsquo;s unclear when such plans might unfold.</p> <p>The Wall Street Journal notes that Sprint executives in particular are concerned that Google will turn around and become a rival in the space in time, but Sprint apparently is able to renegotiate terms if Google brings on a wealth of customers. With Fiber, Google has shown that it wants to give people fantastic Internet service at reasonable prices, but we&rsquo;ll see if the same holds true for wireless service when it&rsquo;s on other companies&rsquo; networks.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/google-to-sell-wireless-service-in-deals-with-sprint-t-mobile-1421887967">The Wall Street Journal</a>, <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/Google-s-Next-Telecom-Move-Becoming-a-Wireless-Carrier">The Information</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-45/review">Android 5.0 Lollipop review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> New Battletoads teased by Xbox exec’s shirt </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Can we credit a t-shirt for rampant speculation about a classic video game&rsquo;s return? It&rsquo;s expected out in September, so we&rsquo;ll hopefully hear more about what makes this pocket-unfriendly option a worthwhile entry into the market before then.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/6/19/5825078/the-passport-is-blackberrys-strangest-phone-ever">The Verge</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/dj_friend/status/479653747350851584">Twitter</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/blackberry/mwc-2014/blackberry-goes-back-its-roots-q20-smartphone/news">BlackBerry goes back to its roots with the Q20 smartphone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="675" title="BlackBerry Passport" alt="BlackBerry Passport" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/blackberry-passport.jpeg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nokia releases the slick Z Launcher for Android </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="" src="//player.vimeo.com/video/98567567?color=ffffff" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="534"></iframe></p> <p>Microsoft acquired Nokia&rsquo;s existing mobile efforts earlier this year, but there&rsquo;s still some phone-focused talent left at the Finnish company&mdash;and if yesterday&rsquo;s release of an Android launcher is any indication, they seem interested in trying their hand at something new.</p> <p>The Z Launcher&mdash;available now in a limited pre-beta release&mdash;is a predictive option that learns from the apps you use and people you interact with, using that info to better present you with the choices you want at the right times of day. And if you need to pull up something that&rsquo;s not shown, you can simply draw the first letter of the word or name and a list will appear.</p> <p>In its pre-beta state, the Z Launcher has only been tested on a handful of phones, such as the Galaxy S3/4/5, as well as the Nexus 5 running Android 4.1+, and tablet use isn&rsquo;t recommended as of now. So perhaps it&rsquo;s not quite ready for primetime, but even so, it already looks like a really helpful and attractive choice. Interesting move, Nokia.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="https://www.zlauncher.com">Z Launcher</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia/nokia-phones-changed-world-and-few-crazy-ones-didnt/feature">11 Nokia phones that changed the world (and 9 crazy ones that entertained us along the way)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/android/fully-charged-see-30-minutes-metal-gear-solid-v-phantom-pain-plus-blackberry-s-phablet-and-n#comments Android BlackBerry Console games Gaming Nokia Smartphones Fri, 20 Jun 2014 06:30:00 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1439610 at http://www.stuff.tv
