Our advice: devour this freebie and then immerse yourself in its commercial sibling.</p> <p><strong><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/trainyard-express/id348724199?mt=8" target="_blank">Download Trainyard Express here</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Trainyard Express" alt="iCheapskate: 30 amazing free games for iPad and iPhone / iOS" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/8-trainyard-express.jpg?1397981867" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-22"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8. Choice tweaks, that&rsquo;s what.</p> <p>The Z2 Tablet looks almost identical to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/sony-xperia-tablet-z/review">Tablet Z</a>, making for a fun session of spot the difference. The hardware has slimmed down half a centimetre to just 6.4mm (somehow making the 7.5mm <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">iPad Air</a> look fat) and it now weighs just 426g for the Wi-Fi-only version. That&rsquo;s ludicrously light for a 10in tablet, and even after a couple of hours arm ache won&rsquo;t be a problem for any but the feeblest of gadgeteers.</p> <p>Aside from the surprisingly powerful speakers sensibly being moved to the front of the tablet from the sides and the new placement of the now flap-free headphone jack, that&rsquo;s it for the cosmetic changes.</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/sony-xperia-z2-tablet/gallery?viewid=115912">CHECK OUT OUR FULL XPERIA Z2 TABLET GALLERY&nbsp;</a></p> <p>Like the Tablet Z, it&rsquo;s a sliver of glass and aluminium that feels almost worryingly thin, and not overly comfortable to hold, thanks to an elongated form and slight flex in the middle. The OmniBalance styling, designed to immerse you in what&rsquo;s on the screen, is finished to perfection - from the reflective skeleton frame to the statement power button, lovely to stroke matte back and artfully hidden port flaps. It&#39;s a classy design but all that fussiness is ruined by the bezels, which are huge by 2014&rsquo;s standards and make the Z2 Tablet more cumbersome than it needs to be.</p> <p>A big part of the Z2&rsquo;s appeal is its waterproofing, which is now IP58-certified (a slight improvement over the Z) so drops in up to 1.5m of water are now safe. It might be a splashproof cooking companion or a bathtime long-reads tab. Either way it means the Z2 Tablet will be more useful in more rooms of the house, and that&rsquo;s got to be a good thing. Still, with smaller, cheaper tabs here to stay, full-size tablets such as the Z2 need to work to avoid being relegated to a stay-at-home slab.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A classy design let down by big bezels " alt="A classy design let down by big bezels " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-build.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Z2 Tablet&#039;s matte back is a fan of fingerprints " alt="The Z2 Tablet&#039;s matte back is a fan of fingerprints " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-desgin.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Don&#039;t worry, it&#039;s still waterproof " alt="Don&#039;t worry, it&#039;s still waterproof " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-headphone-jack.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Finding the microUSB port can take a while " alt="Finding the microUSB port can take a while " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-flaps.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> This is What We Call a Movie Tab </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A big reason most of us want a big tablet is to give movies and TV shows the minimum space they deserve. And here the Sony shines.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s almost the same screen as the Tablet Z: a 10.1in 1920 x 1200 affair with tons of Sony&rsquo;s display tweaks - X-Reality engine, Triluminous tech and now for the Z2 &ldquo;Live Colour LCD tech&rdquo; for brighter colours. Unlike Samsung and Asus, Sony hasn&rsquo;t made the leap to 2k tablet resolutions yet, which is a shame and a bit of a surprise considering the company&rsquo;s at the forefront of 4K TV design.</p> <p>In the end all you need to know is that Sony&rsquo;s an expert on screens - this one is bright and crisp with none of the viewing angle problems that have marred Xperia phones. The 264ppi <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">iPad Air </a>is sharper for reading text and webpages, with slightly more detail when it comes to video playback, too, but otherwise the Z2 Tablet is every bit the stunner. That&rsquo;s thanks to seriously vivid colours and the kind of brightness and contrast that makes for really punchy pictures. In ultimate terms we&rsquo;d say the iPad Air produces the more realistic colours, but the vibrancy of the Sony is mighty appealing and never jarringly unnatural.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="That Live Colour LCD tech seems to be doing the trick " alt="That Live Colour LCD tech seems to be doing the trick " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-screen.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony doesn&#039;t think Spidey needs a 2k tablet screen just yet " alt="Sony doesn&#039;t think Spidey needs a 2k tablet screen just yet " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-spiderman.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Text looks sharp but the iPad Air is sharper " alt="Text looks sharp but the iPad Air is sharper " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-xperia-Z2-tablet-review-text.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apps for a 10in Sony </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Full-size tablets have to live up to more than just media bingeing potential. How? With apps.</p> <p>Whether it&rsquo;s gorgeous, creative App Store apps designed for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">iPad</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tabpro-84/review">Samsung&rsquo;s huge bundle</a> of productivity freebies, Flipboard-style homescreens and subscriptions for the TabPro range, both greatly expand what you can do with a 10in tab. We&rsquo;re talking anything from manipulating virtual Korg synths to dragging and dropping Samsung files. </p> <p>Samsung overhauled its software offering because Google Play still isn&rsquo;t doing enough for 10in tablets. It&rsquo;s neck and neck for smartphone games and apps across iOS and Android but on tablets, the number of fantastic, optimised Android apps still trails the App Store. And Sony hasn&rsquo;t done enough to bridge the gap. Instead you get an almost untouched version of KitKat with only Sony&rsquo;s own Walkman, Movies, Album and What&rsquo;s New apps, and while that once would have been anathema to Android evangelists, they&rsquo;re too busy mucking about with their cheaper Nexus tabs to pay the Z2 much mind. </p> <p>That&rsquo;s not to say Sony hasn&rsquo;t taken certain steps. There are resizeable, windowed small apps for the likes of Gmail and the browser, which is a nice multi-tasking touch (particularly if you go for the Z2 Tablet&rsquo;s keyboard case) - albeit without quite the range or flexibility of Samsung&rsquo;s rival Multi Window apps. </p> <p>The closest Sony has to a compelling must-have app is the excellent universal remote, plus neat tricks such as Wi-Fi &lsquo;throwing&rsquo; of content to bigger screens. It needs more. We don&rsquo;t mean useless, gimmicky bloatware - the likes of Samsung have grown up enough to choose a few worthwhile additions to KitKat and Sony needs to keep up.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="An excellent universal remote app isn&#039;t enough " alt="An excellent universal remote app isn&#039;t enough " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-icons.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Walkman, Movies and What&#039;s New on the Z2 Tablet homescreen " alt="Walkman, Movies and What&#039;s New on the Z2 Tablet homescreen " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-homescreen-1.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performs and performs and performs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Z2 Tablet might not have that one killer feature to make us want to buy this over any other slate. But that doesn&rsquo;t mean it isn&rsquo;t a supremely reliable device in use.</p> <p>As expected, the Snapdragon 801 and 3GB of RAM combo handles everything you can throw at it with ease, from Asphalt 8 to running six small apps on top of the browser. This is a very slick tablet indeed, with high benchmark results to back up the real-world use (33782 on AnTuTu and 2030 on Geekbench 3). While we wouldn&rsquo;t recommend tilting a 10in tab to play racing games, you can hook up a DualShock PS3 controller to get your game on when surroundings allow.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s no need to fear the low percentage icon when using the Z2 Tablet either. Battery life is as good as its predecessor, dropping about 10% an hour of fairly heavy use and lasting just over nine hours in our usual video rundown test (HD video loop, Wi-Fi on, half brightness). That means you&rsquo;ll rarely be reaching for the Stamina mode, a gift from Xperia smartphones, but the power saving function does make a big difference when needed.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s unlikely to be a priority when choosing a tablet but the 8MP rear camera doesn&rsquo;t let the Z2 down. It takes usable if not brilliant snaps - <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z1-compact/review">Sony&rsquo;s smartphones </a>take crisper shots with better exposure but Sony&rsquo;s Superior Auto mode is on hand to change scenes as you go. As it is the Z2 Tablet is a great movie machine, but a tablet costing this much needs to do more, and it&rsquo;s out-worked and out-played by iPads, Samsungs and Transformers.&nbsp;</p> <p>Having said all that, the single-minded approach to media consumption will appeal to many, as will the all-day battery life and waterproof construction, and there&rsquo;s absolutely nothing wrong with that.</p> That gives the Samsung a pixel density of 299ppi, whereas the Sony lags behind with a ppi of 224. Or, to put it another way,&nbsp;the Samsung squeezes in 77.7% more pixels than its rival.</p> <p>Of course there&#39;s more to a screen than just pixels alone, and the Xperia Z2 Tablet aims to make up for its slight resolution deficit with a raft of display-enhancing tricks: you get &#39;Live Colour LED&#39; for (supposedly) rich colours, IPS tech for improved viewing angles, &#39;Triluminos&#39; for better lighting and &#39;X-Reality&#39; for sharper images. The Sony and Samsung tablets each have a very desireable processor but they&#39;re quite different in their approaches. The Xperia Z2 Tablet is driven by a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor running at a rate of 2.3GHz, assisted by Adreno 330 graphics hardware. The Galaxy TabP 10.1 uses an Exynos 5 Octa processor, which is made up of two quad-core sections, one running at 1.9GHz and the other at 1.3GHz.</p> <p>To simplify that, the Sony has fewer cores but higher processing speeds. Higher processing speeds would be evident in situations where the device was working mainly on a single, intensive job, such as photo editing, or some hardcore music or video processing. However, the Samsung&#39;s additional cores should see improved performance where a number of tasks are being carried out simultaneously (perhaps when there are various apps and widgets open at the same time). Different cores can pick up different tasks and deal with them independently without creating bottlenecks with other jobs in hand &ndash; something that will come in very useful for the TabPro&#39;s &#39;Magazine UX&#39; interface (see below).</p> <p>There are other factors that will affect the overall performance of the two tablets, one of which is the operating system and the tweaks that have been made it by Sony and Samsung for their own tablets. This isn&#39;t a category we can call on numbers alone, so for the time being we&#39;ll have to sit on the fence and give you an update as soon as we can run full back-to-back tests.</p> <p><strong>POWER SPECS</strong></p> <p><strong>Sony</strong> 2.3 GHz Qualcomm 801 quad-core with Adreno 330 graphics</p> <p><strong>Samsung</strong> Exynos 5 Octa (1.9GHz quad-core + 1.3 GHz quad-core)</p> <p><strong>Winner: </strong>undeclared for now</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Inside the Xperia Z2 Tablet there&#039;s a Snapdragon 801 processor" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy TabPro 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony%20Xperia%20Z2%20Tablet_0.jpg?1396337664" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The TabPro 10.1 has an octa-core processor" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy TabPro 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SamsungGalaxyTabPro-2.jpeg?1396337664" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This would appear to be almost a dead heat but as we know, there&#39;s more to a camera than its megapixel rating. The Sony also hooks up neatly with a wireless PlayStation controller for hardcore gaming potential.</p> <p>The TabPro 10.1 doesn&#39;t take well to the wet stuff, but it comes with Samsung&#39;s own OS mods and apps, including an interesting &#39;Magazine UX&#39; which carves up the home screen into a number of windows and widgets. One of these sensors captures brightness (or luma) data while the other captures colour (or chroma) data. The device then combines the luma and chroma information together using software to create the final image.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple claims that this split brings with it two significant advantages over the current single sensor camera setup used by smartphones. The first is that each of the two sensors is thinner than the comparable single sensor able to capture both luma and chroma data, which means that phones and tablets themselves can be made thinner. The second is an improved signal-to-noise ratio that spells cleaner-looking images.</p> <p>We&rsquo;d be surprised if this split-sensor technology is used in the next iPhone (the iPhone 6, if it&rsquo;s indeed called that, is probably only a few months away), but it could certainly make its way into future iterations of Apple&rsquo;s smartphone, tablet and notebook products.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="660" height="396" title="Split-sensor camera on a laptop" alt="Split-sensor camera on a laptop" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/0325-patents-1.jpg?1395798986" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Adaptive security profiles </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>But that isn&rsquo;t the only interesting patent filed by the boys and girls from Cupertino recently. A second application entitled &ldquo;Electronic devices having adaptive security profiles and methods for selecting the same&rdquo; (rolls right off the tongue, doesn&rsquo;t it?) is almost as interesting.</p> <p>This document describes iPhone and iPad security measures that can will change depending on location or data type. For instance, if you&rsquo;re at home your device might require a regular passcode to unlock, but if you&rsquo;re out and about a fingerprint scan might be necessary. Colours are vivid and punchy, too, without veering into supernatural territory. There are no screen modes to choose from, which is unusual for a Samsung tab but very welcome - a screen should look good without the need to faff.</p> <p>For watching movies, we still prefer the accurate picture of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review">Retina iPad Mini</a> - contrast is slightly better on the iPad and skintones look more natural. In fact, the Samsung makes even better use of its inches than its Apple rival.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s space for two Google or Samsung apps to run at once, for a start. Simply swipe from the right of the screen to access the Multi Window feature. The TabPro&rsquo;s oddly tall ratio also translates to a widescreen ratio in landscape, which means movies play bigger than they do on the squatter iPad. Last but not least, Samsung&rsquo;s Magazine UX serves up image heavy, screen-filling tiles of email, news, calendar and social updates with Flipboard&rsquo;s help. Regular Android homescreens mean you won&rsquo;t get lost but it&rsquo;s a lovely showcase that just wouldn&rsquo;t work on a 7in tab.</p> <p>Pre-installed apps to get stuff done on the TabPro are just as streamlined as on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-notepro-122-review/review">Galaxy NotePro 12.2</a>. My Files makes searching for docs and images as simple as on a PC or Mac while eMeeting, webEx, Remote PC and Hancom Viewer (for Office docs) could all be lifesavers for business types in need of a back-up, portable work machine. KitKat features such as &ldquo;OK Google&rdquo; voice search in Google Now won&rsquo;t be found on most lesser tabs either.&nbsp;</p> <p>With plenty of free subscriptions also thrown in, it&rsquo;s a bold stab at seducing suits. But with <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/ms-office-finally-coming-ipad/news">Office for iPad rumoured for late March</a> and Win 8 tabs from Dell and Lenovo running full-fat programs, the TabPro&rsquo;s still not going to be the first choice for those looking for the best work device.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/25-free-apps-android/feature" target="_blank">The 25 Best Free Apps for Android</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy TabPro 8.4 review" alt="Samsung Galaxy TabPro 8.4 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-tabpro-84-review-multi-window-apps.png?1395716406" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy TabPro 8.4 review" alt="Samsung Galaxy TabPro 8.4 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-tabpro-84-review-magazine-work.png?1395716406" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy TabPro 8.4 review" alt="Samsung Galaxy TabPro 8.4 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-tabpro-84-review-multi-window.png?1395716406" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy TabPro 8.4 review" alt="Samsung Galaxy TabPro 8.4 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-tabpro-84-review-business-apps.png?1395716406" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A Samsung without an S Pen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This is a TabPro, not a NotePro, and that means there&rsquo;s no S Pen stylus - and we wish there was. But with the same model iPad 4 now selling for &pound;330, that&#39;s just &pound;10 extra for a whole lot more screen space. The iPad Air, meanwhile, will set you back a fair whack more: &pound;400 for the equivalent model.</p> <p>The iPad 4 is only available in the 16GB variety, but spec up the Mini Retina and Air and the percentage difference between them decreases. So while&nbsp;a 128GB cellular Mini is yours for &pound;660, the same spec Air costs &pound;740.</p> <p>Bearing in mind depreciation, the regular refreshment of the iPad range and the vulnerability of mobile hardware, it might be wise to think twice before you splash out more than &pound;600 on a tablet. For our money, the 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi variants offer comfortable levels of storage without excessive financial investment, but if you can manage with just 16GB, the iPad 4 is undoubtedly the best value iPad now available.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> iPad 4</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display" alt="Which iPad? Now, the only apparent difference between the small and big iPads is the surface area. The Mini Retina has a 7.9in display while the Air&#39;s screen is 9.7in across the diagonal. Both are just 7.5mm thick.</p> <p>The poor old iPad 4 sticks with its relatively retro-looking and hefty build in comparison - it&#39;s 652g compared to the Air&#39;s svelte 469g. This is a tablet you might leave at home but it&#39;s still sturdy and perfectly finished.&nbsp;</p> <p>The wide black frame of the iPad 4 has been reduced substantially on the longer sides of the Air. Because it&#39;s much thinner than big iPads of yore, the Air no longer has to do the tapered edge trick, instead sporting a more squared-off edge, identical to the Mini Retina.</p> <p>Both the Air and Mini Retina are available in either &#39;Space Grey&#39; (with a black frame) or &#39;Silver&#39; (with a white frame), shrouded in a single-part aluminium case. The iPad 4 has to make do with the less exciting &#39;black&#39; or &#39;white&#39;, which is apt considering its similarly prosaic design.</p> <p>There&#39;s really nothing between the two newer tablets on this score. The iPad Mini is slightly more of a take-anywhere tablet due to its dinky size, but ultimately we&#39;ll call this one a tie.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> draw - iPad Mini with Retina and iPad Air&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ultimate-setup-apple-ipad-mini-retina-display/feature" target="_blank">The 10 best accessories for the Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ultimate-setup-apple-ipad-air/feature" target="_blank">The 11 best accessories for the Apple iPad Air</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display" alt="Which iPad? Between the iPad 4 and iPad Air, it&#39;s the same resolution and 9.7in size but there are small differences in colour and contrast. The Air&#39;s colours are very vivid - check out iOS 7 icons - and it&#39;s a slightly brighter, crisper screen.</p> <p>The Mini doesn&#39;t lag behind on pixel specs, sharing its 2048x1536 resolution with&nbsp;the two full-sized iPads. That&#39;s dense enough to make pixel edges invisible to most eyes on the iPad Air and iPad 4, but the Mini Retina beats that (for what it&#39;s worth) with an even greater pixel density due to its smaller screen size.</p> <p>The Mini&#39;s screen is excellent, but the Air has more accurate colour reproduction, with the Mini struggling with some hues, reds in particular. Even though that&#39;s not something you&#39;re likely to notice unless you have a trained eye, together with the increased display area it means the Air should be the first choice for anyone heavily into graphics or video work. Indoors it&#39;s quite practical and comfortable on any of the three to reduce the brightness slider by as much as 50%, which will help stretch out the already impressive battery life.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> iPad Air</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">Everything you need to know about iPhone 6</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> BATTERY LIFE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPad 4 has to find room for a pretty fat battery in order to drive its screen for ten hours, but somehow the Air has just as much stamina despite its slimmer chassis.&nbsp; Not only that, but it charges in less time too. In real terms that means it doesn&#39;t need a full night plugged into the mains to get back to 100%.</p> <p>In our real-life tests, the Air is averaging between one and two days before it needs rejuicing. The Mini Retina makes the same 10-hour battery life claims, which are realistic, but in our experience it doesn&#39;t quite match the two bigger models for real-world stamina.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> iPad Air</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">iOS 8 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Which iPad? The PowerVR Wizard can trace 300 million rays per second and 100 million dynamic triangles per second, and Imagination says that its ray tracing abilities are performed around 100 times more efficiently than on a standard GPU.</p> <p>You can see the difference between standard rasterised graphics and graphics that combine rasterisation and ray tracing in the pictures above.</p> <p>The efficiency is such, in fact, that the Wizard is entirely suitable for small, mobile devices (not that it won&rsquo;t be used in notebooks and the like too). Currently, achieving photorealistic visuals on a tablet or smartphone is unthinkable, but this chip could be a step in that direction. Matt Pharr, co-author of <em>Physically Based Rendering, from Theory to Implementation</em>, said, &ldquo;By making ray tracing available to all developers that use this platform, the Wizard architecture offers the possibility of a quantum leap forward in image quality in mobile interactive graphics applications.&rdquo;</p> <p>The PowerVR Wizard is available for licensing now, so expect to see it start appearing in mobile devices in the coming months.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Ray tracing and standard rendering together" alt="Ray tracing and standard rendering together" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/powervr-rendering.jpg?1395195657" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/british-chip-will-revolutionise-mobile-graphics/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Gaming Laptops Smartphones Tablets Tue, 18 Mar 2014 16:37:25 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1433894 at http://www.stuff.tv Video: Huawei MediaPad X1 hands-on review http://www.stuff.tv/android/mwc-2014/video-huawei-mediapad-x1-hands-review/video <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Part phone, part tablet – Huawei’s hoping to go up against the likes of the Nexus 7 with its MediaPad X1 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Video: Huawei MediaPad X1 hands-on review " alt="Video: Huawei MediaPad X1 hands-on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Screen%20Shot%202014-03-17%20at%2015.47.09.png?1395101171" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-3352155383001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="3352155383001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser.
