Why, it&#39;s 5.15mm thick - 1.75mm thinner than an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">iPhone 6</a>. Or 25 per cent thinner, if we want to make it sound more dramatic.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s skinny and then some, but like the last self-consciously super-slim phone we tried, the Oppo R5, it makes sure you notice every one of those tenths of a millimetre. Its design is similar to that of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5S</a>, with a rectangular shape that gives the Kazam Tornado 348 an angular rather than smooth feel.</p> <p>If the Tornado 348 was a creature, you&rsquo;d definitely be able to see ribs poking out its sides.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not just notable for its slimness, but its light weight too. The Tornado 348 is just 95g, making it 25 lighter than an iPhone 6. If we just blew your mind, we apologise for the mess.</p> <p>The Tornado 348 has a pretty striking look to boot. Our white version has bronze-gold aluminium on the sides and glassy-looking surfaces on the front and back. The black version uses silver on its sides for a similar two-tone effect.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/was-uks-first-mobile-phone-and-it-weighed-more-baby/feature" target="_blank">This was the UK&#39;s first mobile phone - and it weighed more than a baby</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Slimline, but does it pack a punch? Both front and back sides are covered with Gorilla Glass 3, which is fairly scratch-resistant and helps make the phone feel expensive, if a little fragile.</p> <p>Kazam has also put a bunch of little insurance measures in place. The company will replace the front screen for free if you smash it in the first year, and a screen protector and rubbery case come in the box, letting you avoid just about all damage with the unfortunate side-effect of ruining the Tornado 348&rsquo;s USP.&nbsp;</p> <p>But here&rsquo;s the thing &mdash; the phone doesn&rsquo;t really need to be this thin. A little subtle curvature would actually improve the phone&rsquo;s ergonomics, and at times the light glassy design does make the Tornado 348 feel very precarious.</p> <p>When taking photos one-handed it feels as though a light breeze could whisk the phone from your hand, bounce it off a drain cover and send it, screen smashed, head-first into a pile of dog mess in a calamitous sequence that&rsquo;d impress Rube Goldberg. Sometimes having a bit of weight and substance to a phone isn&rsquo;t a bad thing.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re also not too happy about the lack of a microSD slot, which we&rsquo;re also going to presume is a result of the limited chassis space. The 16GB of storage leaves you with just under 10GB to actually use: fine for some but not remotely enough if you want to use the Tornado 348 as a place to store all your music.</p> <p>Yes, we like the Kazam Tornado 348 design well enough, just don&rsquo;t expect alarming revelations in dropping down from using a 8mm thick phone to a 5mm one.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/amazon-planning-fire-phone-2-2016/news" target="_blank">Amazon planning Fire Phone 2 - for 2016</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A little subtle curvature would actually improve the phone’s ergonomics, and at times the light glassy design does make the Tornado 348 feel very precarious" alt="Kazam Tornado 348" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kazam-10.jpg?1422030332" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OLED woe </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>More serious issues arise as we look at the screen. The Kazam Tornado 348 has a 4.8-inch 1,280 x 720 pixel AMOLED screen. At this price we&rsquo;d really like to see a 1080p screen, but not because we&rsquo;re simply greedy for pixels.</p> <p>720p 4-5-inch screens can look great, but this one doesn&rsquo;t. Due to the way the Tornado&rsquo;s AMOLED display works, its pixels actually share the little RGB elements that make up each little dot of pure white, and the result is that it looks weirdly fizzy next to the 720p screen of the &pound;140 Moto G. We find it pretty obvious and distracting in the Kazam Tornado 348 - enough to turn the OLED screen from a pro into a con.</p> <p>There are also a few other oddities in the display. Colours are very oversaturated, making everything look that little bit tweaked and unnatural. It also seems to do some very odd things with motion. When watching movies there&rsquo;s a frame interpolation effect that almost makes people look as if they have been sped-up &mdash; you&rsquo;ll often see this in higher-end TVs as a way to improve motion handling, but we&rsquo;ve always found it looks kinda&hellip; weird.&nbsp;</p> <p>This screen is a dead ringer for the one we saw in the Samsung Galaxy S3 back in 2012, but things have moved on a little since then and it&rsquo;s too easy to notice its shortcomings now we&rsquo;ve been so spoilt by screens such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">LG G3&rsquo;s</a> QHD one. Conversely, shop around and the LG G3 can be yours for not a huge amount more than the Tornado.</p> <p>OLED isn&rsquo;t without benefits, though. The Kazam Tornado 348 offers great black depth and contrast. That should be perfect for movies, but it&rsquo;s spoilt a bit by the fizziness, colour saturation and motion weirdness issues.&nbsp;</p> <p>As is to be expected of a phone thinner than a Ryvita, the speaker doesn&rsquo;t help the Kazam Tornado 348&rsquo;s chances of scoring a job as a mini cinema either. It has a single speaker on the back, and while it avoids sounding distorted, it is very trebly and thin.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sharp/sharps-new-aquos-k-will-flip-itself-nostalgic-phone-users-hearts/news" target="_blank">Sharp&#39;s Aquos K will flip itself into nostalgic phone user&#39;s hearts</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A pixel or two wouldn&#039;t go amiss..." alt="Kazam Tornado 348" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kazam-7.jpg?1422030332" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Operating System</strong>: Android 4.4.2 with ColorOS</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 4.8in AMOLED with 1280x720 resolution (306ppi)</p> <p><strong>Processor</strong>: MediaTek MT6592 @ 1.66GHz</p> <p><strong>RAM</strong>: 1GB</p> <p><strong>Storage</strong>: 16GB (not expandable)</p> <p><strong>Camera</strong>: 8MP rear with LED flash, 5MP front</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth 4.0</p> <p><strong>Battery</strong>: 2050mAh</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 140 x 68 x 5.15mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 95g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Vanilla with a twist </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As with previous Kazam phones we&rsquo;ve seen, the software strategy seems to be to keep everything pretty close to standard Android.</p> <p>The phone does have a custom interface, but aside from a few tweaks you could easily mistake it for vanilla software. So, what are the tweaks? The Kazam Tornado 348 lets you add folders in the apps menu, has a new-look Settings menu and a few added features such as custom smart gestures. These let you do things like take the phone out of sleep with two taps, or launch specific apps from standby by drawing a specific object on the touchscreen.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not a bad approach to customisation, but we have noticed a few slow or glitchy moments in the custom areas, especially the Settings menu. While the interface may look like standard Android, it&rsquo;s not quite as well-optimised.</p> <p>One interesting touch is the Amazon Mayday-like Kazam Rescue app. It doesn&rsquo;t video-call Kazam customer services - you have to use an actual phone number to get hold of them - but it does allow them to remote access your phone (with your permission, natch) to diagnose problems or simply help you get setup. It&rsquo;s a neat feature and something that more and more gadget makers are going to be including in the future, but we suspect it will only be a deal-maker for a small and specific set of people.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lg/ces-2015/ces-2015-lg-reveals-active-bending-phone-wraparound-screen/news" target="_blank">LG Reveals the Active Bending Phone with wraparound screen</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="As with previous Kazam phones we’ve seen, the software strategy seems to be to keep everything pretty close to standard Android" alt="Kazam Tornado 348" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kazam-18.jpg?1422030332" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Eight little cores </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&rsquo;s not like there isn&rsquo;t enough power to go around: the Kazam Tornado 348 has an octa-core MediaTek MT6592 CPU with 1GB of RAM, and while MediaTek chips aren&rsquo;t quite as efficient or popular as their Qualcomm alternatives &mdash; the Snapdragon 800 of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-nexus-5/review" target="_blank">Nexus 5</a> is better &mdash; there&rsquo;s a good amount of power on tap here.</p> <p>As long as you make sure all eight cores are prepped to fire-up when needed, the Kazam Tornado 348&rsquo;s gaming performance is very good. It uses the Mali 450 GPU, which sits roughly between the power on tap in the Motorola Moto G and Nexus 5.</p> <p>In other words, it&rsquo;s good but don&rsquo;t let those eight cores go to your head too much. It also doesn&rsquo;t have four true high-power cores, as other 8-core CPUs do.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not a bad setup for efficiency, though. Four of the cores can be effectively switched off to save battery life, and that helps avoid the dismal battery life we feared when seeing a phone as slim as the Kazam Tornado 348.&nbsp;</p> <p>It has a 2050mAh battery, similar to the Motorola Moto G. With normal use you&rsquo;ll get a solid day and change out of a charge and we got a solid 10 hours of video playback before the phone gave up. While you&rsquo;ll get better out of the rival Honor 6, another young upstart out to attack the big boys, it&rsquo;s better than we expected from such a slim phone.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;</strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-nexus-6/review" target="_blank"><strong>Google Nexus 6 Review&nbsp;</strong></a><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="It&#039;s no powerhouse, but gaming on the Kazam is a fine experience" alt="Kazam Tornado 348" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kazam-5.jpg?1422030332" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="For a super-slim phone the Kazam&#039;s battery lasts pretty well" alt="Kazam Tornado 348" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kazam-17.jpg?1422030332" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> An extra serving of selfies </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The cameras aren&rsquo;t too shabby either. It&rsquo;s fairly quick at taking shots (although HDR processing takes quite a while), and the camera app tries to be about as simple as it can.</p> <p>Taking a few cues from the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">iPhone 6</a>, the app doesn&rsquo;t offer reams of extra features, instead largely sticking to the basics of HDR and panorama on top of standard Auto shooting. If anything these are actually pushed a bit too far into the background, with HDR accessed from the camera settings menu through a fiddly slider.&nbsp;</p> <p>There are no fancy low-light abilities on offer here, with detail taking a nosedive at night. Even in daylight there&rsquo;s a bit of fizziness to images, and the HDR mode is fairly poor, introducing too much sharpening, which spoils the character of photos. But then the Kazam Tornado 348 never really claims to be a photographic hero.&nbsp;</p> <p>But selfies are a cut above the norm thanks to the 5-megapixel sensor. As with most of these new high-res selfie cams, don&rsquo;t expect to see every unsightly nose hair rendered crisply if you shoot in dim indoors lighting, but the results are still flat-out better than the generic 2-megapixel front cameras you get in so many other low-end and mid-range mobiles.</p> <p>However, with the way things are going at present, 5-megapixel front cameras may become the norm for just about all but the cheapest phones in 2015.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/kodak/ces-2015/kodak-instamatic-back-shape-android-powered-camera-phone/news" target="_blank">Kodak Instamatic is back - in the shape of an Android-powered camera phone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="3264" height="2448" title="Kazam Tornado 348 sample photo" alt="Kazam Tornado 348" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_20141216_140350.jpg?1422030332" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="3264" height="2448" title="Kazam Tornado 348 sample photo" alt="Kazam Tornado 348" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_20141215_161131.jpg?1422030332" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="3264" height="2448" title="Kazam Tornado 348 sample photo" alt="Kazam Tornado 348 sample photo" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_20141215_160338.jpg?1422030332" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The future vs the past </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>With a slimmer body than ever that doesn&rsquo;t totally kill battery life and a jazzed-up selfie cam, the Kazam Tornado 348 can seem like a forward-looking phone. Watching Netflix at the gym, we noticed a good deal more time than usual spent on the buffering screen: it&rsquo;s not good news for those who like to watch videos or download apps on-the-go.&nbsp;</p> <p>Most other connectivity extras are missing, too. There&rsquo;s no NFC and no IR transmitter, making the Kazam Tornado 348 a bit lacking on the wireless front.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6-plus-vs-samsung-galaxy-note-4-weigh/feature" target="_blank">Apple iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Certainly slim - but where&#039;s the 4G? In other respects, it&rsquo;s just a bit too pedestrian for our liking.</p> <p>The screen looks less detailed than the 720p competition thanks to its OLED screen, and there are several good 1080p phones available for the same price or just a little more.&nbsp;</p> <p>We were pleasantly surprised how easy the phone is to live with thanks to its respectable battery life (always one of the main worries with a super-slim phone), and the fact that Kazam actually seems to care about its customers makes a refreshing change, but you&rsquo;ve got to really prioritise those things if you&rsquo;re going to overlook its many omissions and shortcomings.</p> <p>In the end, most people will find better options in the &pound;250 ballpark, but that doesn&rsquo;t mean we&rsquo;re not excited about what Kazam does next.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten" target="_blank">The 10 Best Phones in the World right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div And after turning our nose up at some shabby screens, the 5.0&#39;s is a bit of a relief.&nbsp;</p> <p>The 5in 720p IPS display is nice and bright - helpful in the kind of hip, low-lit members&#39; clubs which we frequent - and a quick stream of Shaun The Sheep from Google Play Movies shows off some vivid colours and inky-enough blacks. Text on webpages looks crisp, with good contrast, and viewing angles are decent too - the Tornado 2 would make a worthy bigger brother to the &pound;135 4.5in <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-moto-g/review">Motorola Moto G</a>.</p> <p>But the most exciting thing about the display? Kazam will replace cracked or smashed screens free of charge for the first twelve months. Bravo.&nbsp;Although given that there&#39;s no Gorilla Glass here, probably just as well.</p> <p>Things now look mighty promising for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/british-based-kazams-new-55in-200-octa-core-phablet-could-be-smartphone-deal-century/news">Tornado 2 5.5</a> (being kept under wraps at present). Kazam&#39;s hinted the covers will be sold separately as Motorola is trying - we fondled a range including Note 3-style faux leather.&nbsp;More importantly, the battery below it is also replaceable.&nbsp;Given that at&nbsp;1800mAh, it&#39;s&nbsp;smaller than both the Moto G (2070mAh) and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-nexus-5/review">Nexus 5&nbsp;</a>(2300mAh), and therefore unlikely to last a full day, that&#39;s music to our ears. Better still,&nbsp;if your battery konks out for good, Kazam will send you a new one&nbsp;as part of its warranty,&nbsp;with no faff or need to send your handset into the &quot;repairs ether&quot;, as they call it.&nbsp;</p> <p>Another plus point below the hood is that it&#39;s dual SIM - one regular-sized SIM, one micro-SIM - so handy for business types, travellers or anyone who just likes to pretend to be Archer now and then. And, the biggie - its 8GB storage is expandable up to a further 64GB via microSD.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review - ports " alt="Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review - ports " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kazam-tornado-2-50-hands-on-review-microUSB.png?1394645978" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review - build " alt="Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review - build " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kazam-tornado-2-50-hands-on-review-rear.jpg?1394645978" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Rescue: Kazam&#039;s Mayday button </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>All Kazam&#39;s smartphones will come with a Rescue app, pre-installed - kind of like Amazon&#39;s Mayday button on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/review">Kindle Fire HDX</a>&nbsp;models.&nbsp;</p> <p>Using LogMeIn&#39;s Rescue service, it&#39;s designed to help handset n00bs get on with tricky stuff such as setting up email and er... actual faults with the phone. Yep, the Tornado 2 5.0 is powered by a 1.7GHz MediaTek octa-core processor. But before you get too excited, that doesn&#39;t mean it will be twice as fast as a quad-core beast - instead it should help with battery life and is potentially good for mobile gamers; devs including Gameloft are working on octa-core optimised titles as we speak.&nbsp;</p> <p>A quick flick around the OS (stock Android, hurrah!, only 4.2.2 - boooo) and the Tornado 2 seems speedy enough for moving in and out of apps and web browsing. And Kazam is already bragging about benchmark performance. In Quadrant, it scores 13563 - higher than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review">Galaxy S4&#39;s</a> 12726 - but we&#39;ll take that with a pinch of salt for now.</p> <p>There&#39;s no NFC - we can forgive that - but also no 4G, a real shame. Still, at this price it doesn&#39;t need to be too futureproof and it&#39;s missing on the Moto G, for now, too. &nbsp;</p> <p>With three Android capacitive buttons under the screen, it&#39;s odd that onscreen buttons popped up in a couple of apps, but since these are pre-production units, we&#39;re sure kinks of this kind will be ironed out.</p> <p>Apart from a sprinkling of pre-installed apps, the only departure from stock Android is the camera app, which has Live Photo and Beauty modes as well as decent flash, shutter and ISO menus. The 8MP camera is quick to focus and the 5in screen makes a great viewfinder, but we&#39;ll hold off judgement of image quality till we take a final unit out snapping - a measly 5MP camera is what let the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-moto-g/review">Moto G</a> down so we&#39;re mighty interested in the results. The Kazam phone can shoot 1080p video @30fps too and there&#39;s a 2MP camera up front.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;</strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/two-four-six-eight-how-many-cores-does-your-phone-need/feature">Two, four, six, eight: how many cores does your phone actually need?</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review - camera" alt="Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review - camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kazam-tornado-2-50-hands-on-review-camera-app.png?1394645978" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review - performance" alt="Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review - performance" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kazam-tornado-2-50-hands-on-review-quadrant.png?1394645978" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review - performance" alt="Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review - performance" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/kazam-tornado-2-50-hands-on-review-web.png?1394645978" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Tornado 2 5.0 doesn&#39;t have the lovely build and KitKat tricks of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-nexus-5/review">Nexus 5</a> but that doesn&#39;t mean Google&#39;s finest is safe.&nbsp;</p> <p>With its bright, vivid screen, light body and helpful Rescue service,&nbsp;Kazam&#39;s almost-flagship impressed us mightily in our time with it. The difference is that it&#39;s applying this to Android smartphones, in which competition is traditionally about one-upmanship: huge brands slugging it out with superior internals, sleeker designs and ever more inventive added-value features.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">Kazam thinks that it has devices that go toe-to-toe with Apple, Samsung and HTC on hardware, design and reliability, but it isn&#39;t even trying to compete with the added-value stuff. Developing the likes of Samsung&#39;s Smart Scroll and HTC&#39;s Zoe is expensive and &ndash; so goes the theory &ndash; most punters would rather have good gadgets for less cash.</p> <p class="p4">&quot;The brands that define themselves by technology are in this arms race to constantly differentiate. I think that can sometimes lead to developing tech to be different rather than because it&#39;s necessarily the right thing to do,&quot; says Atkins.</p> <p class="p4">Coombes agrees. &quot; We&rsquo;re not worried about having 20,000 R&amp;D engineers creating features we don&rsquo;t really want. We&rsquo;re seeing tech-savvy customers saying, &lsquo; We love HTC but we don&rsquo;t need Sense, we want native Android; we love our Samsung device but we don&rsquo;t want TouchWiz, we want native Android.&rsquo;&rdquo;</p> <p class="p4">Every Kazam device will run the sort of unadorned Android you get on a Nexus device, or an AOSP version of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc-one/review">HTC One</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review">Samsung Galaxy S4</a>. But, says Kazam, they won&#39;t carry the high prices of those devices, as the company R&amp;D costs are lower than those of competitors. All of Kazam&#39;s R&amp;D is done by NF Technology Limited, a Chinese smartphone developer, under scrutiny from Head of Products Daniel Boff who recently joined Kazam from&nbsp;WDS.</p> <p>And there&#39;s another way that Kazam&#39;s keeping costs down, says Coombes: &quot;We&#39;re not spending money on sponsoring David Beckham or the Olympics.&quot;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="TouchWiz and Sense" alt="TouchWiz and Sense" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/touchwiz-sense.jpg?1394719360" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="829" height="768" title="Kazam CEO Michael Coombes" alt="Kazam CEO Michael Coombes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qy0hux5zOEMbFivmXZ4Vu8kM1SZSBz-yC7kV-WAZH7o.png?1394719360" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Risky business </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="p1">There&#39;s good reason that Samsung sponsors the Olympics or HTC ropes in Robert Downey Jr. for a campaign. The smartphone market is saturated. BlackBerry is teetering on the brink, and even HTC is struggling. Visibility is key, and without the marketing budget of a megacorp, it&#39;s going to be a huge challenge for Kazam to get itself seen.</p> <p class="p3">And while there&#39;s no doubt that Android offers as good a mobile experience as any on the market (well, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/three-months-heres-why-i-cant-sell-my-htc-one/feature">Sense 5</a> is pretty damn good too), with a conspicuous lack of Kazam hardware or pricing, it&#39;s impossible to judge whether its handsets will be compelling enough to make people think twice before picking up an HTC or an iPhone.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p3">Indeed, with devices such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-nexus-4/review‎">Nexus 4</a> already offering unadorned Android on outstanding hardware for mid-range money, Kazam will have its work cut out.</p> <p class="p3">Atkins tells us, &quot;It&#39;s about more than just the handset,&quot; and hints at a wider strategy that hinges on top-notch background services. He also thinks there&#39;s much to be made of the company&#39;s local approach: when was the last time you bought a smartphone from a British manufacturer, or even a European one? Atkins wouldn&#39;t be drawn on specifics in either case, but the idea of a home-grown smartphone is certainly an appealing one (check out how nuts the US went over the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/moto-x-official-all-details/news">Moto X</a>).</p> <p class="p1">Coombes is similarly bullish that Kazam&rsquo;s no-nonsense approach can achieve great things in a short time. &ldquo; We&rsquo;re not trying to do anything other than the basics: great-looking devices with features, without compromising on quality. I&rsquo;m 100 per cent confident that Kazam will be a big player in a few years&rsquo; time; when you mention Kazam everyone will know who we are.&rdquo;</p> <p>A good start would be a few killer devices - it&#39;s going to be interesting to see what September brings.</p> <p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/kazam-tornado-2-50-hands-octo-core-stock-android-and-5in-screen-sub-200/news">Kazam Tornado 2 5.0 hands on review&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OVE1OcfB1E4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="877" height="768" title="Kazam CMO James Atkins" alt="Kazam CMO James Atkins" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ms5RN_iAlgVEqAd-Bf6f51lFjRsB9ALMGUP5VasUM7w.png?1394719360" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Amazing Androids, small money </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Meet Kazam, the UK smartphone startup targeting the big guns </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-carousel-image"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item big image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_carousel_image" width="920" height="340" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/carousel-images/KAZAM_LOGO22.jpg?1394719360" /> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/kazam/meet-kazam-new-uk-smartphone-manufacturer-taking-aim-big-guns/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/kazam/meet-kazam-new-uk-smartphone-manufacturer-taking-aim-big-guns/news#comments Kazam Smartphones Thu, 15 Aug 2013 09:44:49 +0000 Will Findlater 1425573 at http://www.stuff.tv
