Can&#39;t get your iPhone movies to play on your TV? The question of which device will play what kind of file can be toe-curlingly frustrating, but RealPlayer Cloud offers a nifty solution. Every file you upload to your personal folder is automatically transcoded into a number of different file formats, and when you want to play them on another phone, tablet, PC or Smart TV, it automatically downloads the right kind of file so it&#39;ll play without any mucking about.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While for many people RealPlayer was a plugin they remember installing in the late &#39;90s, the media player has forged on and continues to serve up video to around 25 million users, who download around 100 million of each other&#39;s videos per month. And while you may already have VLC or another multi-format player on your desktop, your uncle/nan/employer probably doesn&#39;t, so RealPlayer Cloud should make sending home movies a great deal easier. Your recipient doesn&#39;t need a RealPlayer Cloud account to watch or download videos you&#39;ve sent them, so you won&#39;t have to talk your parents through any sort of installation process, and if you&#39;re pinging videos between your own devices it&#39;s all pleasingly straightforward.</p> <p>And yes, you could upload your videos to YouTube and mark them as private, but RealPlayer Cloud lets you email someone a download link rather than a link to watch on a website, and for many that will feel like a more secure, private way of getting their home movies from their phone to their TV. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</p> <p>&quot;We&#39;ve found that while increasingly TVs are sold as &#39;smart TVs&#39;, people aren&#39;t really using them as &#39;smart TVs&#39;, because it&#39;s difficult to connect things up and watch things from your other devices&quot;, said RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser when we met him at Mobile World Congress last week. &quot; So our aim is make that easier. We&#39;ve started with Roku and Chromecast&quot; - there&#39;s a Cast button built into the app - &quot;and we&#39;re going to add more devices. People tell us they much prefer using an app as a remote control.&quot;&nbsp;</p> <p>The amount of space you get in RealPlayer Cloud is similar to the Dropbox model, with 2GB available straight away for free, more if you persuade a pal to sign up, and still more if you&#39;re prepared to pay. Don&#39;t imagine you can use it for any nefarious sharing, though. &quot; We support the same rules and use the same deterrents as YouTube does to stop piracy,&quot; said Glaser. &quot; Our goal is to make legitimate sharing of video easy, not piracy.&quot;</p> <p>RealPlayer Cloud is available for PC, Android, iOS, Windows 8 and Kindle Fire.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Play nice, you two" alt="RealPlayer Cloud" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/rpcloud2.jpg?1394625163" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/realplayer-cloud-transcodes-your-videos-so-theyll-play-anything/news#comments Android apps Apps and Games Camcorders iOS apps Wed, 05 Mar 2014 14:55:24 +0000 Will Dunn 1433062 at http://www.stuff.tv GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition http://www.stuff.tv/action-cam/gopro-hero3-black-edition/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The king of the action cams returns - but will it still rock our world? But in its favour, the tiny, boxy form works well in confined spaces.&nbsp; The waterproof case has been redesigned for the Hero3+ and is now smaller and lighter than before, and also fits more snugly - all good changes, we feel. </p> <p>As with all GoPro cams, operating the 3+ can be an awkward process because all feedback comes via the tiny mono LCD screen. Unless you never change any settings and just hit &lsquo;Record&rsquo;, you&rsquo;ll want to team it with the supplied remote or smartphone app. Alternatively, you can add an LCD touchscreen - but that&#39;s another &pound;80. While GoPro users have to either make do with a teeny little monochrome screen or spend an extra &pound;80 for a clip-on LCD panel, the Garmin has a proper colour display.&nbsp;</p> <p>Well, we say &#39;proper&#39;. The VIRB&#39;s&nbsp;&lsquo;Chroma&rsquo; display is powered by ambient light - which is great for battery life, but not so good for viewing in poor conditions; use it in the dark and it&#39;ll be virtually blank. However, on the W850 it&#39;s difficult to see why you&#39;d want the small, swivelly, screen-side camera. It only records VGA, and only as a window in the main camera&rsquo;s footage, so you can&rsquo;t switch between cameras (which would be handy for shooting an interview, or a wide and close angle on a subject). So in our brief experience we got two kinds of results from the two-camera camcorder: either a confusingly small picture of something far away or a deeply unflattering, chin-filled close-up of the shooter&#39;s face. If you can think of any film that would be improved by having your peering, distracted mug superimposed on a quarter of the screen, this is the feature for you.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">The tiny camera on the side may be about as useful as a waterproof teabag, but the W850&rsquo;s main eye is a feat of precision engineering. While most camcorders have two lens groups (a zoom group and a focus group), the W850 has four. The two extra zoom groups allow for a 50x optical zoom in a body the size and weight of a small hot dog (bun included). It can shoot 1080p slow motion (half-speed), and it can switch to slo-mo without breaking recording. While it&rsquo;s light it feels fairly sturdy and at first squint the footage looked impressive, especially zoomed right in.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">While pawing the W850 we were also shown an interesting accessory, the VW-CTR1 Pan Tilt Cradle. Mount your Panasonic camcorder on this robotic tripod (the W850 or its more affordable sibling, the V550) and you can shoot from anywhere, using your phone or PC. If you&rsquo;re a private investigator, a spy or a keen birdwatcher, this could be worth a (surreptitious) look.</p> <p class="p1"><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ces-2013/ces-2014-biggest-stories-so-far/feature" target="_blank">CES 2014 - the biggest news so far, live from Las Vegas</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Hands-on review: Panasonic W850 selfie camcorder" alt="Hands-on review: Panasonic W850 selfie camcorder" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_2231.JPG?1389069126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="It tilts, it pans, it connects to the cloud." alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_2221.JPG?1389069126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Hands-on review: Panasonic W850 selfie camcorder" alt="Hands-on review: Panasonic W850 selfie camcorder" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/W850_K_slant_LCD.jpg?1389069126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/hands-review-panasonic-w850-camcorder/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/hands-review-panasonic-w850-camcorder/news#comments Camcorders CES 2014 Panasonic Mon, 06 Jan 2014 16:49:54 +0000 Will Dunn 1430769 at http://www.stuff.tv 4K at IFA 2013: all the highlights http://www.stuff.tv/ifa-2013/4k-ifa-2013-all-highlights/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A look at the finest Ultra HD gear this year’s show had to offer </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="4K at IFA 2013: all the highlights" alt="4K at IFA 2013: all the highlights" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/LG_ULTRA_HD_OLED_TV_01.jpg?1386624512" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Ultra HD video has been a major theme at this year&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ifa-2013">IFA</a>, with each of the major manufacturers pulling the wraps off at least one killer 4K-compatible product. The EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM is aimed squarely at HD video addicts and uses Canon&#39;s &quot;stepper&quot; tech to ensure smooth focusing transitions within scenes.</p> <p>And it works really well. Focusing when shooting video is both quicker and quieter than with the old model kit lens, with fewer distracting jumps when changing subjects. Coupled with the 700D&#39;s ability to continuously autofocus in Live View &ndash; a feature first found on the 650D &ndash; and its supremely detailed 1080p (at 24, 25 or 30fps) footage, it makes for a fine option for home movie makers. That said, this kind of thing is old hat to many compact system cameras, and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/olympus/olympus-om-d-e-m5/review" target="_blank">Olympus OMD-EM5</a> (<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/system-cameras/top-ten" target="_blank">our favourite camera in the world right now</a>) still focuses a little faster when shooting movies.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20kit%20lens.JPG?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20lens.JPG?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Picture perfect </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Ultimately the lack of new features isn&#39;t much of a problem, because the 650D was already a superb camera and the 700D is every bit as good. It may sit at the cheaper end of the DSLR scale, but its 18MP CMOS sensor serves up fantastic images in every regard, and right up to ISO 1600. At 3200 and 6400 images are a bit noisy but eminently usable, and it&#39;s only really the very high 12800 and the silly 25600 extended mode that aren&#39;t worth bothering with, which is to be expected really. Colours are typically Canon, so on the neutral side. The balance is easily tweakable if you want results that are a bit punchier - go to the picture settings, up the saturation, contrast and sharpness by a few notches and make it the default, and you&#39;ll never need to do it again. Or you can shoot in RAW for the ultimate control.</p> <p>For more sample snaps in full resolution, check out out Flickr set <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/sets/72157635185062250/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20Sample%20pic%206.jpg?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20Sample%20pic%201.jpg?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20Sample%20pic%2010%20toys.jpg?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20Sample%20pic%2011%20creative%20filter.jpg?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Slow and steady </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Autofocus is good &ndash; the camera usually locks on to your subject like an SAS sniper, although with only 9 focus points (albeit all of the superior cross-type), rival Nikons theoretically have an advantage here. Many new CSCs may have faster autofocus and smaller bodies, but on the other hand the 700D has a larger sensor, a proper optical viewfinder and a much bigger lens selection. Factor in its price, and it&#39;s simply the best pound-for-pound DSLR on the planet, which is why it replaces the 650D at No.2 in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/system-cameras/top-ten" The 1020&rsquo;s banana yellow polycarbonate housing (mercifully, white and black are also available) is big and bright enough to dazzle bystanders and slippery enough to demand a skin. Fortunately it feels robust enough to survive a drop, but at 158g it&#39;s over 40g heavier than an iPhone 5 and is also a touch too broad to be properly comfortable.&nbsp;</p> <p>At first, the side-mounted power button is easily and irritatingly confused with the shutter release, which also pops the Lumia into camera mode - all too frequently you&#39;ll find yourself accidentally opening it up. Once you&#39;re used to the layout the dedicated shutter button is very handy. It works direct from sleep, too, although the time to taking its first photo lags a crucial second or so behind the iPhone 5, so it&#39;s all-too easy to miss the crucial action shot. Nokia execs can breathe again: the Lumia 1020&rsquo;s camera is fantastic. 41 megapixels sounds ridiculously over-specced, but a few shots in, serious snappers will wonder how they ever survived with fewer. Landscapes are sharper, faces clearer, and buildings and cars have razor-sharp edges. Quality-wise, it&#39;s genuinely as good as a powerful compact camera.</p> <p>Counter-intuitively, shooting in the 5MP setting can sometimes deliver even better results. That&rsquo;s because the Lumia&rsquo;s PureView tech (first seen on a forgettable Symbian handset, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia/nokia-808-pureview/review" target="_blank">808 PureView</a>) doesn&rsquo;t just resize the full resolution image. Instead, it combines data from multiple pixels into one &lsquo;superpixel&rsquo; to even out grainy digital noise and record colours more accurately, especially in dim conditions. Not to be confused with &lsquo;ultrapixels&rsquo; on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc-one/review" target="_blank">HTC One</a>, which are just large traditional pixels that capture more light in the first place.</p> <p>The default camera app is Nokia ProCam, which offers shutter speed, white balance, sensitivity and focus adjustment on pop-up dials, and a bona fide full auto mode. In normal shooting, the app stores photos as a 5MP snap plus a full resolution JPEG version &ndash; either 34MP or 38MP, depending on whether you&#39;ve chosen widescreen or 4:3 image ratio.&nbsp;</p> <p>For a whole bunch of full resolution snaps taken during testing, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/sets/72157634903680548/" target="_blank">head to our Flickr set</a>.</p> <p>You can opt to keep just the 5MP, which saves 10MB of storage each time you press the shutter, but it doesn&rsquo;t do much to improve the shot-to-shot time - a sluggish five seconds. And there are other imperfections: annoyingly, if you want the blisteringly fast 5MP burst mode, you have to slowly switch into another app called SmartCam. Actual shutter lag is minimal, but the software-related delay is an issue for such a camera-focused phone.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/WP_20130724_12_37_16_Pro%20-%20for%20web.jpg?1392914625" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/for%20web.jpg?1392914625" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Zoom without the tears </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you swipe or pinch to use the Lumia&rsquo;s 3x optical &lsquo;zoom&rsquo;, you&rsquo;re actually taking a 5MP crop of the full resolution frame. As you zoom in, you&rsquo;ll gradually sacrifice some of the superpixel benefits, but at least you won&rsquo;t end up with a soft upscaled blur as with most smartphones. And even at full &lsquo;zoom&rsquo;, the Lumia still records a full-frame, wideangle high-res partner shot.&nbsp;</p> <p>Full HD video (at 24, 25 or 30fps) looks lovely, and the stereo audio recording is well above par. Another photo favourite is the decent xenon flash &ndash; far superior to weedy LED lights. It&rsquo;s good out to a couple of metres. There&rsquo;s also a panorama app and Microsoft&rsquo;s decent Photosynth to download. But checking the Windows Store, there&rsquo;s still no sign of the promised Vine app, and a native Instagram app isn&rsquo;t even on the horizon. Uploading to Twitter and Facebook is easy enough but lacks album and visibility options. And on none of the apps can you actually upload those full-res 34MP beauties. At 332ppi, though, it&#39;s plenty crisp enough at rendering text and Windows Phone 8&#39;s sharp-edged tiles could cut through lead. With its mind-blowing resolution, beautiful image quality, great low light capability, zoom and flash, the 1020 is way more camera than anyone needs day to day, plus a powerful smartphone to boot.</p> <p>There are flaws, though. Shot-taking is slowed a tad by the software, and Windows Phone 8&#39;s remaining app gaps include a number that such a camera-focused phone really should have.</p> <p>On top of that it&#39;s mighty expensive - at least in the US. Perhaps Nokia will surprise us and launch it for less in the UK, but we reckon that&#39;s highly unlikely. That will leave the much more affordable Lumia 925 as the Windows Phone of choice for most people looking to inject live-tile loveliness into their smartphone life. – but Canon thinks there’s life in the old dog yet. The company has just introduced a new LEGRIA model with 1080p recording, 12MP stills, 2.7in touchscreen and built-in Wi-Fi. The latter lets you beam content to a phone or tablet, while the screen twists so that you can film or photo yourself more easily. There’s also a built-in stand and tripod mount. There’s no built-in storage, so a microSD card is a must. It’ll be out mid-September, priced at £270. Blu-ray and HDTV services made us realise that DVD’s standard def pictures weren’t actually “all that”, and to add insult to injury, the long-promised arrival of several excellent, cheap on-demand streaming services happened. For the uninitiated, they were small devices able to receive a short text message – or sometimes just a number. We're unfortunately old enough to remember the process: calling a human operator, dictating a message and having that passed on to a friend's pager. It’s just a question of convenience.</p> <p>Yes, it’s those smartphones again. Little wonder Apple now only offers one version of the once-ubiquitous iPod Classic, and hasn’t updated it since 2007.</p> <p>There will always be a few people who favour dedicated MP3 players over their phones – the sound quality argument is a valid one, because lossless audio takes up a lot of space and dedicated MP3 players don’t need to use this up on apps; being designed primarily for music, they also may have better built-in DACs than phones. Phones have tiny lenses, are prone to frame-tearing, have poor definition and no usable zoom to speak of. DSLRs can do a good job in a studio but in the real world they often struggle with poor stabilisation, jerky zooms, substandard sound recording and less than super-smooth frame rates. It's high-end compacts that put up the best fight, but even those are limited by short battery life and the 30-minute cap on continuous footage that blights anything that's not technically a camcorder.</p> <p>So hurrah for the camcorder! Especially this one, which effortlessly records silky smooth, razor-sharp footage at a TV-style 50fps or the more web-centric 25fps. Sony claims that you can even film with it, hand-held, as you run (perhaps giving chase to a rogue plumber before confronting him about ripping off old ladies). We checked, and it's true. This is one unflapplable customer.</p> <p>The Sony's motorised zoom takes it from a wide angle to 55x magnification, gradually or swiftly depending on how far you nudge the zoom rocker. You can push it up to 350x if you turn on the digital zoom but the picture breaks up soon after the digital side kicks in. In the battle of the superzooms it beats the <a title="Canon HF R48 review" href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon/canon-legria-hf-r48/review" target="_blank">Canon R48</a> but falls short of the <a title="Panasonic HC V720 review" href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic-hc-v720/review" target="_blank">Panasonic V720</a>'s range. Nevertheless, 55x gets you a very long way, and the image stabilisation is up there with the best, thanks in part to that spooky floating lens that moves to counter your hand wobbles. Otherwise it's a top performer where it matters most; well specced and featured without being overcomplicated with superfluous features. It would be a good idea to keep one onboard though, especially as there's the option for "relay recording", in which the camcorder automatically switches from internal to SD storage (or vice-versa) if one fills up during shooting.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Big battery </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A rather ungainly but very practical battery block is supplied in the box, giving the R48 a 1hr 45min shooting time. However, adding a Wi-Fi badge was too much too resist, and as is often the case with cameras and Wi-Fi, the supposed convenience and time-saving advantages are outweighed by the hassles involved in setting up Wi-Fi connections between the camcorder and your computer or smartphone. Just use a cable for faster, easier, better quality viewing and data transfer.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Niggles </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There are a few omissions that may or may not niggle you depending on how you shoot. There's no video light, for example, although the low-light performance was good enough that we didn't find this an issue. If sound recording is important to you, the lack of an audio input or an external microphone attachment could put you off.
