Whereas in the 1970s you had desk calculators that could conceivably have been used as an actual desk, by the 1980s, companies were merrily giving away credit-card sized solar-powered equivalents that would frustratingly fail to work unless you happened to be ambling about on the surface of the sun; but, hey, compromise.</p> <p>Then there were the first mobile phones, which were only slightly more convenient than dragging around a telephone box on a trolley, and were eventually blissfully replaced by devices so tiny you ran the risk of losing them down the back of an atom.</p> <p>The current industry obsession is &lsquo;thin&rsquo;. Everything now has to be super-skinny, because it&rsquo;s a factor that can then be used in marketing. Your new smartphone&rsquo;s approximately the same size as an advertising hoarding? We see such problems with Apple&rsquo;s new iPhones, which are beautifully designed pieces of kit that just happen to be too thin to house the camera lens. So while celebrating the fact your iPhone 6 is now precisely 0.7 mm thinner than an iPhone 5s, you can fume that the camera sticks out a bit, making the device wobble when set down on a table.</p> <p>A flush design at the back would have been more aesthetically pleasing, maybe even made the battery slightly bigger, and would have meant Apple&rsquo;s website and photography teams wouldn&rsquo;t have had to clumsily try to pretend a camera bulge didn&#39;t exist. Tablets like the Sony Xperia Z2 are so worryingly thin that they actually have a slight flex; not only does this make an expensive piece of hardware feel worryingly fragile, but also it makes it less comfortable to hold.</p> <p>The new Dell Venue 8 7000 Series is even skinnier, its 6 mm beating the Xperia Z2 by 0.4 mm and the comparatively chunky iPad mini by over 1 mm. Naturally, headlines have been grabbed, for the eleven seconds that Dell&rsquo;s device remains the thinnest tablet that ever thinned, while pretty much no-one wonders whether it might have been better to add some extra heft to boost the battery and speakers.</p> <p>But it looks like thin is here to stay. Intel&rsquo;s Chris Walker has argued in favour of doubling down on the concept of super-skinny tablets, and dreams about ditching bulky ports for charging, data transfer and peripherals. Pretty soon, mobile devices will be so thin ninja will be able to use them as weapons. Frankly, I&rsquo;d rather have a bit more battery life and the means to plug in some headphones.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-releases-ios-8-iphone-ipad-and-ipod-touch/news" target="_blank">Apple releases iOS 8 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-01.jpg?1411058221" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Dell Venue 8 7000 Series" alt="Dell Venue 8 7000 Series" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/dell-inspiron-venue-8-7000-series.jpg?1411058221" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/it-s-time-tech-companies-drop-their-obsession-thin/feature#comments Apple Smartphones Tablets Xperia Z Thu, 18 Sep 2014 16:37:03 +0000 Craig Grannell 1447917 at http://www.stuff.tv Amazon’s refreshed Kindle Fire lineup includes 6in £79 tablet, plus kid-centric variant http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/amazon-s-refreshed-kindle-fire-lineup-includes-6in-us99-tablet-plus-kid-centric-variant/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The HDX 8.9 also gets Dolby Atmos and Firefly, while Fire OS 4 brings more cloud features </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Amazon Fire HD 7 and Fire HD 6" alt="Amazon Fire HD 7 and Fire HD 6" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/amazon-firehd-6-7.png?1411051409" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>The middle of the night (or even late evening U.S. time) seems an odd time to announce a load of new hardware, but that&rsquo;s exactly what Amazon has done - and it&rsquo;s a pretty serious lineup refresh for the Kindle Fire.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Seriously kid-friendly </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>For parents tired of shelling out to replace shattered device screens, the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LOR524M/ref=fs_ket">new Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition</a> should bring welcome relief. Dressed entirely in black, it&rsquo;s the sort of low-key garb people use to hide a bit of extra weight in the tummy region. There&rsquo;s no such thing here, though.</p> <p>The LG G Pad 10.1 is just 8.9mm thick and weighs 523g. That&rsquo;s not too heavy for a 10.1-inch tablet.</p> <p>However, aside from being quite thin, there&rsquo;s little to show this is a 2014 tablet. Where more expensive new models such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-105/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5</a> have slimmed down the expanse of bezel around the display for a more modern, streamlined look, the LG G Pad 10.1 still has a beefy handgrip on each side.</p> <p>If you&rsquo;re going to keep the tablet at home, you don&rsquo;t need to worry. But it cuts into the portability a bit.</p> <p>For a clearer look at what we mean, let&rsquo;s have a little specs comparison with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5. Even though that tablet has a bigger screen, it&rsquo;s still a centimetre less wide, and 50g lighter. If you&rsquo;re looking for something to use on the train on the way to work, you&rsquo;d probably be better off with the smaller <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lg/lg-g-pad-83/review" target="_blank">LG G Pad 8.3</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review" target="_blank">Google Nexus 7</a> at the price.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="The bezels are big but the LG us only 8.9mm thick" alt="LG G Pad 10.1 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g-pad-101-3.jpg?1410188999" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This is really a tablet to use at home, while vegging out on the sofa. Forgetting the fairly big footprint for a minute, the LG G Pad 10.1 is actually pretty comfy to handle too.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s big, black and basic, with no real design frills, but the back of the tablet has a lovely soft touch finish that&rsquo;s about as stroke-able as a puppy. It adds the little bit of design class the LG G Pad 10.1 really needs.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s another little hardware extra, and it&rsquo;s something that once again tells us the LG G Pad 10.1 is more of a coach potato than Jim Royle. It has an IR blaster on the top edge. With the help of the QRemote app, this lets you make the tablet function as a universal remote.</p> <p>As long as your TV or Blu-ray player isn&rsquo;t old enough to earn a bus pass, you should have no trouble getting it hooked up with the LG G Pad 10.1. It doesn&rsquo;t work with game consoles, though, which is a shame. The tablet also has NFC, which is a bit of a surprise in a tablet of this price. It&rsquo;s basic in some respects, but there are a few extras.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review" target="_blank">Google Nexus 7 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="The QRemote app + IR transmitter = universal remote control" alt="LG G Pad 10.1 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-pad-101-2.jpg?1410188999" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="THIS IS THE BIGGEST ZAPPER EVER!" alt="LG G Pad 10.1 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-g-pad-101-1.jpg?1410188999" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Big-screen retro </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>That&rsquo;s really your lot in terms of flashiness, though. The LG Pad 10.1 is otherwise a pretty simple tablet, and where this shows up most significantly is in the screen.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll admit, we did get a bit of a sinking feeling on first turning it on. It&rsquo;s just not sharp, at all.</p> <p>The LG G Pad 10.1 has a 1,280 x 800 pixel screen, the same sort of resolution we saw back in 2011 when tablets first started getting popular. 7-inch tablets can just about get away with 1,280 x 800 screens today, but 10.1-inch ones really can&rsquo;t anymore.</p> <p>We tested games, web browsing and videos with the LG G Pad 10.1 to see exactly how badly the low-res display will affect you. 720p videos can still look pretty great on this tablet &ndash; it&rsquo;s more-or-less the screen&rsquo;s native resolution, but most other things have the feel of being blown up to an uncomfortable size: stretched that bit too far.</p> <p>For the techies out there, the LG Pad 10.1 has a 149ppi display. LG&rsquo;s own <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lg/lg-g-pad-83/review" target="_blank">G Pad 8.3</a>, which sells for slightly less cash, offers a far better 273ppi, and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review" target="_blank">iPad Air</a> 264ppi. Winner.</p> <p>The LG G Pad 10.1 uses an 8000mAh battery, which is much bigger than the 6800mAh unit of its most obvious rival, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1.</p> <p>With 16GB of internal memory, you have enough room for only a few movies, but there&rsquo;s thankfully a microSD card slot to let you add to that. After all, Frodo&rsquo;s not going to look too sharp if you try and compress the 12 hours of <em>The Lord of the Rings</em> trilogy into the 10GB or so you actually have to play with in the G Pad 10.1.</p> <p>LG has tried to give the tablet even more movie cred by using stereo speakers, one on each side of the G Pad 10.1&rsquo;s back. However, sound quality isn&rsquo;t too hot. It&rsquo;s not flat-out ugly, but doesn&rsquo;t have the extra injection of mid-range warmth and the tiny little kick of bass that the best mobile device speakers can now kick out. That little sound quality improvement is not a lot, but it means a lot to us and you don&rsquo;t get it here.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/25-best-things-watch-netflix-right-now/feature" target="_blank">The 30 best things to watch on Netflix right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="16 hours of video between charges is enough for the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy - even the super extended director&#039;s special edition collector&#039;s collection" alt="LG G Pad 10.1 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g-pad-101-43.jpg?1410188999" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="There&#039;s just 16GB of storage onboard the LG, but it is microSD expandable" alt="LG G Pad 10.1 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g-pad-101-4.jpg?1410188999" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1600" height="900" title="There are stereo speakers at either end of the tablet&#039;s rear, but they&#039;re not the weightiest around" alt="LG G Pad 10.1 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g-pad-332.jpg?1410188999" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Optimus – good, if not optimal </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>But aside from lasting for ages and having a slightly rubbish screen, what is the LG G Pad 10.1 like to use? This comes down to the Optimus UI, the custom interface that sits on top of <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-44-kitkat/review" target="_blank">Android 4.4</a>. It&rsquo;s a very similar interface to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">LG G3&rsquo;s</a>.</p> <p>While OptimusUI doesn&rsquo;t exactly have bags of style, it is quite simple these days, and offers a couple of features that are useful in a tablet. First, you can run two apps at once, a feature accessible using one of the software soft keys at the bottom of the screen.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not quite as slick as Samsung&rsquo;s take on the same idea, and you can&rsquo;t run nearly all your apps in this way, but it is handy. And, for once, if offers an excuse for having two different browser apps (you need to use the stock browser and Chrome to get two web pages on screen at once).</p> <p>QPair is also worth a mention. It&rsquo;s an app that hooks up with your mobile phone using Bluetooth 4.0, relaying your text messages so you can more-or-less forget your phone while using the LG G Pad 10.1. Bonus sofa lounger points.</p> <p>The execution of extra features such as QPair and QRemote could be a little bit slicker, but they certainly do work.</p> <p>Android still struggles a bit with justifying a 10-inch screen &ndash; the extra space doesn&rsquo;t add all that much to most apps &ndash; and the UI is once again let down a bit by the screen resolution. The smallish text of app icons makes the lower pixel density a bit too obvious, and as a result OptimusUI looks quite a bit scrappier on the LG G Pad 10.1 than it would on, say, the LG G3 or even the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lg/lg-g-pad-83/review" target="_blank">LG G Pad 8.3</a>.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s a confirmation that the LG G Pad 10.1 spends a bit too much of the budget on extras such as NFC and an IR transmitter, and not quite enough on the real basics such as screen quality. We&rsquo;d trade away the extras just for the bump up to a 1080p screen.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-edge/ifa-2014/samsung-galaxy-note-edge-brings-curved-screens-masses/news" target="_blank">Samsung&#39;s audacious Galaxy Note Edge brings curved screens to the masses</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="While OptimusUI doesn’t exactly have bags of style, it is quite simple these days, and offers a couple of features that are useful in a tablet" alt="LG G Pad 10.1 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g-paf-101-44.jpg?1410188999" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Chasing the Snapdragon </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The power on tap is reasonable, though. But in the end we find it very hard to live with such a low-res display in 2014.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tablets/top-ten" target="_blank">The 10 Best Tablets in the World right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="LG G Pad 10.1 review verdict" alt="LG G Pad 10.1 review verdict" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g-pad-101-221122.jpg?1410188999" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 7 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 5 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 6 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 7 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G Pad 10.1 offers the right features, but screen quality just isn&rsquo;t quite good enough</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g-pad-101/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g-pad-101/review#comments Android G Pad 10.1 LG Tablets Sat, 06 Sep 2014 13:49:00 +0000 Tom Parsons 1446714 at http://www.stuff.tv Intel's new Core M processor could make the next MacBook Air a monster http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ifa-2014/intels-new-core-m-processor-could-make-next-macbook-air-monster/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s thin, fanless, powerful and the most energy efficient Core CPU in Intel’s history – and it’s coming very soon </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Intel Core M" alt="Intel Core M" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/intel-core-m-logo.jpg?1410141706" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Intel has just unveiled its latest processor at IFA 2014, and it&rsquo;s set to boost small laptops, large tablets and 2-in-1 devices to new levels. Here it adds to the sleek build and handbag/big pocket-friendly dimensions.&nbsp;</p> <p>Because it doesn&#39;t look like a scaled-down Z2 Tablet. The huge bezels all around that slate have gone, transforming it somewhat and if anything this looks like Sony&#39;s take on a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review">Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4</a>. At 270g - nearly 30g less than the still-plasticky Samsung - it&#39;s a great move for Xperia tablets.&nbsp;</p> <p>With the same IP65 and IP68 water and dust resistance ratings as its smartphone siblings, the Z3 Tablet Compact will also make a great cooking or even bath time companion. The Galaxy S5 might be waterproof but the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review">Tab S</a>&nbsp;sure isn&#39;t.</p> <p>If you&#39;re planning to dunk it (in up to 1.5m of water for half an hour) just make sure all those flaps covering ports like the microUSB are closed. Or floods of your tears will soon be joining all that water.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/sony-xperia-z2-tablet/review">Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet review&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Tablet Compact gets PS4 Remote Play too " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-tablet-dualshock-4.png?1409798632" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Familiar Sony flaps mean one thing - waterproofing " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-tablet-ports-1.png?1409798632" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Xperia by numbers - the prominent power button is present and correct " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-tablet-power-button.png?1409798632" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 8in 1920x1200 TFT<br /><strong>Processor</strong>: 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801&nbsp;<br /><strong>RAM</strong>: 3GB&nbsp;<br /><strong>OS</strong>: Android 4.4 KitKat&nbsp;<br /><strong>Camera</strong>: 8.1MP rear, 1080p video; 2.3MP front, 1080p video<br /><strong>Storage</strong>: 16GB (+ microSD up to 128GB)&nbsp;<br /><strong>Battery</strong>: 4500mAh (19 hours talktime, 15 hours video playback - claimed)&nbsp;<br /><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 3G/4G (with nanoSIM), NFC&nbsp;<br /><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 213.4 x 123.6 x 6.4mm<br /><strong>Weight</strong>: 270g&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 2K isn&#039;t everything </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Sony Xperia Z3 isn&#39;t bowing to pixel pressure by going 2K and neither is the Z3 Tablet Compact.&nbsp;</p> <p>Unlike Samsung with its <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review">super sharp 2560x1600 Tab S 8.4</a>&nbsp;and Apple with its Retina display-rocking 2048x1536<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review"> iPad Mini</a>, Sony is sticking at Full HD. And at first glance, we&#39;re not terribly annoyed.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Full HD <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/sony-xperia-z2-tablet/review">Z2 Tablet </a>is a monster movie tablet, in part thanks to Sony&#39;s TV tech such as Triluminous for mobile and - to a lesser extent - X-Reality for mobile which pumps up contrast and saturation. And the Z3 Tablet Compact is just as capable at displaying pure whites and vibrant colours. Samsung keeps its edge for deep blacks thanks to its use of SuperAMOLED screens but this screen is just as brilliant as we&#39;ve seen on past Xperias. It&#39;s bright too, holding up well in direct sunlight.&nbsp;</p> <p>That said, the Samsung does have its advantages. Loading up Stuff magazine in Samsung&#39;s new Papergarden store on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review">Tab S</a> shows just how crisp text looks. Opening up Stuff.tv on the Z3 Tablet Compact and zooming out on a full screen of (lower res) text in an epic review shows that, while we agree 2K can be overkill, sometimes extra pixels help.&nbsp;</p> <p>It might not be futureproof but for now, the Z3 Tablet Compact shouldn&#39;t be too ashamed of its resolution.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review">Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A set of stunning screens from Sony - with the Z3 " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-tablet-with-phone.png?1409798632" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Bright and vivid even in direct sunlight " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-tablet-umbrellas.png?1409798632" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The only tablet that can play PS4 games </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We didn&#39;t think a small Android tablet could really trouble the<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review"> iPad Mini</a> without a miracle but here it is. PS4 owners, listen up. You can now play PS4 games on the Z3 Tablet Compact - as well as the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact. It&#39;s the same in-home game streaming tech found on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pch-2000/playstation-vita-slim/review">PS Vita</a> and the Z3 Tablet Compact makes a tidy set-up with Sony&#39;s mount and a DualShock 4 controller. We haven&#39;t had a play yet but stick to Stuff.tv for our first impressions.&nbsp;</p> <p>That&#39;s the biggest news but Sony really doesn&#39;t put a foot wrong anywhere. With the same largely fuss-free Android skin that we&#39;ve come to expect from Sony and a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor plus 3GB of RAM under the hood, it&#39;s no suprise that the Z3 Tablet Compact ran <em>sans</em> stutter during our hands on time with it. We&#39;re sure it will be a hoot 24/7 but we&#39;ll put it through the full streaming, multi-tasking and gaming paces when we get a final review unit.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&#39;s a pair of decent 8MP and 2.3MP cameras front and rear which both shoot 1080p video in case you need them. The Tablet Compact is treated to the same hi-res audio, uprating and digital noise cancelling (with Sony headphones) as the Xperia Z3 smartphone too.</p> <p>And there&#39;s a fairly beefy 4500mAh battery inside to keep all that ticking over. Sure, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review">Tab S 8.4 </a>has a bigger 4900mAh unit but that has hundreds more pixels to push. Sony reckons the Tablet Compact will last an impressive 15 hours of video playback. That would be a compact all-day tablet to be reckoned with if it stands up.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/review">Long term PS4 review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony&#039;s Android skin hasn&#039;t changed in a while " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-tablet-whats-new.png?1409798632" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The back of the Tablet Compact is lovely to stroke " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-tablet-rear_0.png?1409798632" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Nvidia&#039;s Shield weeps quietly in the corner " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Xperia_Z3%20Tablet%20Compact_PS4_Black.jpg?1409798632" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Convincing people they need an Android tablet - let alone a premium one - is no easy task.&nbsp;</p> <p>But the Z3 Tablet Compact is a lovely thing. There&#39;s the 10.1-inch tablet bit and the base bit it plugs into.</p> <p>Acer has done its best to make fitting the two together easy. There are no release buttons, no complicated click-and-lock mechanisms. Instead everything is done with magnets, and a couple of plastic guides. It&#39;s a neat idea, but isn&#39;t perfect in practice.</p> <p>First, let&#39;s start with the good stuff. The magnets are easily powerful enough to keep the Acer Switch 10&#39;s screen firmly attached to the base. The keyboard doesn&#39;t go flying off even if you lift the whole thing up by its screen and give it a wiggle &ndash; nice work Acer, nice work magnetism.</p> <p>Using magnets also means you can put the screen on back-to-front with no issues. You might ask: why on earth would &nbsp;you want to do that? It&#39;s all part of Acer&#39;s 4-in-1 design for the Switch 10.</p> <p>As the screen doesn&#39;t fold all the way back like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lenovo-yoga-tablet-10/review" target="_blank">Lenovo Yoga</a>, putting the screen on backwards turns the keyboard into a neat screen stand if you want to just browse the web or watch a movie, rather than type. And if space is super-tight (basically if you&#39;re on a plane or train), you can setup the Acer Switch 10 in its tent form &ndash; again, perfect for movies.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lenovo-yoga-tablet-10/review" target="_blank">Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Magnets and plastic guides are all the Acer uses to connect its tablet and keyboard sections" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-keyb-s.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="It doesn&#039;t fold backwards enough to be flat, but this configuration is great for movie watching in tight spaces" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-5.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A matter of balance </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Acer gets a brownie point for flexibility, then, but what&#39;s wrong? We found that even after using the Switch 10 for a while it&#39;s still all-too easy to mis-align the tablet with the base. The inconvenience issue is one half of our beef, the other side that we are a teeny-tiny bit worried about the longevity of the thing.</p> <p>The entire outside of the Acer Switch 10&#39;s hinge is plastic, including the guides that slot into the tablet part, where its arch rival&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-transformer-book-t100/review" target="_blank">Asus Transformer Pad T100</a>&nbsp;uses metal. Dodgy metal can shear off quicker than plastic might wear, but the Asus&#39;s hardier feel gives us that little bit more confidence in use.</p> <p>Our top tip &ndash; treat the Acer Switch 10 as if you&#39;re on a first date with it, at least until you&#39;re better acquainted.</p> <p>It is high-maintenance in another respect, too. As Acer has valued keeping the Switch 10 super-light, there&#39;s no extra ballast in the keyboard base to stop it tipping over when the screen is tilted back laptop-style.</p> <p>On a flat surface such as a table it&#39;s fine as long as you don&#39;t give the Acer Switch 10&#39;s screen a poke, but it&#39;s a right old pain should you try and work with the tablet on your knees. It&#39;ll fall back like a toddler learning to walk as soon as you take your hands of it.</p> <p>Where you benefit is weight. While loads heavier than a light tablet, as the Acer Switch 10 weighs just 1.11kg all-in it&#39;s very light for a laptop. That&#39;s just a few grammes heavier than the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-macbook-air-11in-2014/review" target="_blank">11-inch MacBook Air</a>, which is oh-so famed for its portability. Asus T100 is just as light, though, and that isn&#39;t so tip-happy.</p> <p>Look a bit closer and it&#39;s pretty clear why the Acer Switch 10 is a lot cheaper than a MacBook Air. It&#39;s nowhere near as pretty, and is mostly plastic rather than metal. The keyboard is all-plastic, and while there&#39;s a sheet of brushed aluminium on the back of the tablet for that fancy-pants look, it&#39;s clearly not part of the structure of the thing. The sides, the frame &ndash; they&#39;re all plastic.</p> <p>We don&#39;t really mind, though. Plastic can do the job just fine if it&#39;s part of a well-designed device.</p> <p>The Acer Switch 10 feels pretty well-made for a cheap hybrid, but we do wish the tablet wasn&#39;t quite so angular. Like previous Acer Windows tablets, it has very boxy sides that don&#39;t even have the tiniest bit of bevelling.</p> <p>No, your poor paws aren&#39;t going to be hurt by those sharp plastic edges. But the Switch 10 could feel a whole lot nicer as a tablet. We&#39;d go as far as to say the tablet doesn&#39;t really make a lot of sense on its own.</p> <p>Just look at the thing &ndash; those giant two-tone bezels make it look like a prop from a 70s sci-fi show. It&#39;s quite strange that the Switch 10 makes a pretty attractive laptop, but a really quite ugly tablet.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-macbook-air-11in-2014/review" target="_blank">MacBook Air 11in review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Give it a little tap and the top-heavy Switch is liable to topple" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-side-2.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="As a standalone tablet the Acer isn&#039;t terrifically pretty" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-11.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Working it </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>But does the Acer Switch 10 really make a good laptop-replacer? It&#39;s actually not too bad at all.</p> <p>We tried using the Acer Switch 10 as our main work computer for a couple of days, to give it a real road test. We will admit, the keyboard takes a little bit of getting used to. It&#39;s keys are shrunk down, to perhaps about 80 per cent the size of those of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-macbook-pro-retina-2013/review" target="_blank">13-inch MacBook Pro</a>, but they are proper keys, sensibly-arranged, with all the usual sorts of secondary functions you&#39;d get in a full-size laptop.</p> <p>After a few days, it feels just like a miniature laptop. The key action could be improved, though. You get the same sort of key depth as an Ultrabook, but they&#39;re a little bit spongy &ndash; the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-transformer-book-t100/review" target="_blank">Asus Transformer Pad T100</a> keys are a bit crisper. To be fair, you will get used to it, and we were typing away at full speed within hours. But keyboard quality is pretty important in a hybrid such as the Acer Switch 10.</p> <p>Acer has tried to make the trackpad about as big as it can in a small package like this, but you can see a few of the budget cuts in it &ndash; you don&#39;t get down to &pound;300 without a few sacrifices. The plastic surface doesn&#39;t have anywhere near as smooth a drag as the glass surface you get with good Ultrabooks, which often use textured glass, and the click action is a bit clunky.</p> <p>Things such as the slightly cramped keyboard and the just-ok trackpad just mean that the Acer Switch 10 works much better as a portable backup to a main laptop or desktop. We wouldn&#39;t recommend using it as your main laptop.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/laptops/top-ten" target="_blank">The 10 best laptops in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="The Switch 10 makes a fairly compelling super-cheap laptop..." alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-19.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="...although the keyboard and trackpad are a little less satisfying than they might be" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-34.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Longevity limits </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Will the Acer Switch 10 get you through a full day&#39;s work if you need it to? The Switch 10 brings much more vibrant colours, which is great for the more fun side of owning a hybrid. You don&#39;t need nice reds to work on that screenplay that&#39;s never going to get made, but for watching the movie you nicked the ideas off? Certainly.</p> <p>Specs-wise, the Acer Switch 10 display is fairly basic. It uses a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. It&#39;s the same sort of resolution you&#39;d see in a laptop at the price, and doesn&#39;t have that super-sharp look you can get with some &pound;300 tablets. It&#39;s certainly not Retina-grade.</p> <p>However, it&#39;s decent, and display quality is a good deal better than a cheapo laptop. As the Switch 10 uses an IPS screen, people can crowd around it to watch that video of a cat riding a robot vacuum cleaner without rubbish viewing angles ruining the (rubbish) party.</p> <p>Being a tablet at heart, the screen is a touch display. It uses a glass top layer, too, but we&#39;re pretty sure it&#39;s not Gorilla Glass as it flexes a bit too readily for our liking.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-6-s-unbreakable-sapphire-glass-screen-shown-two-videos/news" target="_blank">iPhone 6&#39;s &quot;unbreakable&quot; sapphier glass screen shown off in two videos</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="It&#039;s not a technically advanced screen on paper, but colours and viewing angles are great" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-1.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The muscle for full-fat Windows? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As we look into each aspect of the Acer Switch 10, we see more of the sort of little finishing touches you miss out on compared with something perhaps 2-3 times the price. However, the real compromise is power.</p> <p>The Acer Switch 10 uses an Intel Atom Z3745 CPU and 2GB of RAM. While using full <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-81/review" target="_blank">Windows 8.1</a> rather than a cut-down RT-style version means you can have a go at installing anything you like, from <em>Peggle</em> to Adobe Premiere Pro, you&#39;re not going to want to edit videos or batch process 15MB RAW photo files on this little guy. It just doesn&rsquo;t have the power for hardcore tasks such as that.</p> <p>However, unlike some slightly earlier Atom-based Windows computers, the Switch 10 does have enough grunt to do the basics in style. There&#39;s no significant lag flicking around the interface, and while just doing simple writing and browsing, you won&#39;t be held back. It&#39;s when loading things up you&#39;ll notice those little annoying pauses. Again, it&#39;s more evidence that you probably don&#39;t want this as your no. 1 computer.</p> <p>To really push the Acer Switch 10 to its limits, we tried running a few Steam games, the most challenging being <em>Two Worlds 2</em>, a 3D RPG released way back in 2010. We needed to strip away all the fancier graphical effects and reduce the resolution to 720p (below the display resolution) to make the game playable. Even then the frame rate isn&#39;t great.</p> <p>You&#39;re not going to be playing the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/call-duty-advanced-warfare/review" target="_blank">latest <em>Call of Duty</em></a> on the Switch 10 then, but it&#39;ll do the trick for older games and the more simple indie titles out there, and there sure are plenty of those. You could always use it for <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/steam-home-streaming/review" target="_blank">Steam In-Home Streaming</a>, too.</p> <p>The Switch 10 is a bit more powerful than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-transformer-book-t100/review" target="_blank">Transformer T100</a>, using a Z3745 chipset to the Asus&#39;s Z3740. They&#39;re pretty similar, but the Acer&#39;s processor has a bit more graphics power. This added to the better screen makes the Switch 10 a slightly better gaming hybrid &ndash; don&#39;t go trading in your PS4, though.</p> <p>Acer has tried to further jazz-up the Switch 10&#39;s entertainment cred with front-firing stereo speakers &ndash; under the display &ndash; but it hasn&#39;t entirely worked. Any kind of stereo is welcome, but the sound quality is more-or-less the norm for a tablet: zero bass, and fairly boxy sound. For games and movies, you&#39;ll want headphones.</p> <p>The 32GB standard version of the Switch 10 only leaves you with about 11GB of storage to play with anyway, although there is also a 64GB version that costs around &pound;30 more online.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/steam-home-streaming/review" target="_blank">Steam In-Home Streaming review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="It&#039;s marginally more powerful than the Asus Transformer Book T100" alt="Acer Switch 10 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/switch-10-7.jpg?1409702581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Acer Switch 10 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Operating System</strong> - <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-81/review" target="_blank">Windows 8.1</a></p> <p><strong>Screen</strong> - 10.1in IPS LCD with 1366 x 768 resolution</p> <p><strong>CPU</strong> - Intel Atom Z3745</p> <p><strong>GPU</strong> - Integrated graphics</p> <p><strong>RAM</strong> - 2GB</p> <p><strong>Storage</strong> - 32GB or 64GB</p> <p><strong>Optical drive</strong> - None</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong> - 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.0, microSD, microHDMI</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong> - 177 x 262 x 8.9mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong> - 1.1kg</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Levelling up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While the Acer Switch 10 works perfectly well on its own, there are lots of ways to supercharge its powers. There&#39;s no cable in the box for this, but you can pick them up online for a couple of quid.</p> <p>What really levels-up the Switch 10&#39;s potential as a little laptop is the full-size USB port on the keyboard base. Cables and adapters will allow it to work with existing USB connector types.</p> <p>According to the Promotor Group, it&#39;s already had representatives from the PC, mobile, automotive and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/how-internet-things-will-change-world/feature">Internet of Things</a> industries &ldquo;knocking down our door&rdquo; in anticipation of the new standard, although a specific date for its arrival on upcoming products is yet to be set.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.usb.org/press/USB_Type-C_Specification_Announcement_Final.pdf" target="_blank">USB.org</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/how-internet-things-will-change-world/feature">How the Internet of Things will change the world</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Here&#039;s what Type-C USB will look like" alt="Here&#039;s what Type-C USB will look like" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/usb-type-c.jpg?1407982217" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/finally-reversible-usb-cables-are-way/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Desktops Laptops Smartphones Tablets Wed, 13 Aug 2014 14:09:37 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1444740 at http://www.stuff.tv
