Apple has offered a 4:3 aspect ratio on every iPad to date, which even on the original model&rsquo;s release was at odds with the then-iPhone&rsquo;s 3:2 display. By contrast, most Android tablets have aped smartphones, which have tended towards 9:16 &mdash; a TV-like 16:9 aspect ratio in landscape.</p> <p>For a smartphone, such displays make sense. Primarily designed to be used in portrait, you want a display that shows plenty of content, and where everything&rsquo;s relatively easily accessible with a thumb or two. Tablets, however, have very different use cases, which are often closer in nature to what you&rsquo;d do with a notebook.</p> <p>In landscape, widescreen tablets are perfectly suited to video playback, but their shortcomings become clearer elsewhere. If you&rsquo;re using an on-screen keyboard, the area remaining for content is reduced to a sliver; when using the device in portrait, it doesn&rsquo;t suit books and comics, or creating documents intended for paper output. Even browsing websites on a 16:9 tablet can feel sub-optimal, content not having room to breathe in portrait, but needing regular scrolling in landscape.</p> <p>In 4:3/3:4, these problems disappear. The result is more room to work, and a more natural set-up for creating and consuming most content. There are compromises &mdash; black bars above and below widescreen video, and games having a squarer viewport; but even the latter can be beneficial in strategy titles or shooters where enemies are coming at you from all angles.</p> <p>Microsoft headed somewhat in this direction with the Surface Pro 3&rsquo;s 3:2 display; but Google&#39;s Nexus 9 gets you 4:3 with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 &mdash; identical to the iPad, and at a higher resolution than on the iPad Air, due to the Nexus 9&rsquo;s smaller physical dimensions.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/yYHY3MFiq1o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nexus 9" alt="Nexus 9" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-9-lifestyle_0.jpg?1413552171" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why the Nexus 6’s giant display is just too much </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/7-things-you-need-know-about-google-nexus-6/news">As per our write-up</a>, the Nexus 6 is essentially an embiggened Moto X, with a display that&rsquo;s a tiny smidge off of six inches. Its pixel count is almost absurdly high; the phone&#39;s 2560 x 1440 resolution means that there are more pixels packed into this smartphone than the Nexus 9 tablet. It all feels a bit excessive &mdash; another example of smartphones trying to one-up each-other on size; if this keeps up, at some point a manufacturer will realise with a shock that their new device doesn&rsquo;t actually fit through the door of the average family home.</p> <p>The argument in favour of larger displays is clear: you potentially get to see more content on the screen, or the same content but bigger. Such devices can in certain cases be more pleasurable to use, and if you&rsquo;re the kind of person who reckons you can use a smartphone as your sole computer, you&rsquo;re going to want a display larger than the tiny viewport on the likes of an iPhone 5s.</p> <p>The problem is <em>everything else</em>. In order to keep the visual fidelity high, Google&rsquo;s had to make the screen 2K. This heavily impacts on all kinds of things: it drains the battery more quickly; it makes the device pricier than it otherwise had to be; and it also potentially leads to upsampling issues when viewing 1080p content (although probably not quite to the same level as the iPhone 6 Plus under some circumstances, which may merrily upsample content to 2208 x 1242 before downsampling it again for the 1080p display&mdash;bonkers).</p> <p>Coupled with this, you end up with a flagship phone that&rsquo;s simply too big and unwieldy for many &mdash; a modern incarnation of a Dom Joly prop, but on which you can play Angry Birds. We don&rsquo;t know yet if it&rsquo;ll be prone to bendgate, but whereas Google appears to have primarily thought about the user experience with the Nexus 9, the Nexus 6 seems to merely be yet another case of &lsquo;mine&rsquo;s bigger than yours&rsquo;.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-nexus-6/review" target="_blank">Google Nexus 6 preview &ndash; everything you need to know</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wk-PY2dBKaA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="782" height="586" title="Nexus 6" alt="Nexus 6" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-6-charging_2.jpg?1413552171" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/how-google-got-one-screen-right-and-one-screen-wrong-nexus-9-and-nexus-6/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/google/how-google-got-one-screen-right-and-one-screen-wrong-nexus-9-and-nexus-6/feature#comments Google iPad Nexus 6 Nexus 9 Smartphones Tablets Fri, 17 Oct 2014 12:07:04 +0000 Craig Grannell 1450480 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple iPad Air 2 hands-on http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Thinner, lighter, mightier – looks like Apple’s done it again </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Apple iPad Air 2 hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/apple-ipad-air-2-hands-on-review-01.jpg?1413526767" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-findlater" title="View user profile.">Will Findlater</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>You know what the iPad Air, the thinnest tablet Apple has made so far, the one that&rsquo;s 20% thinner than its distinctly not-fat predecessors, never needed to be?</p> <p>Thinner. Navigating through iOS 8 was predictably jerk-free, and apps and web pages loaded in a snap.</p> <p>There are no apps that really test the limits of the A8X yet, which is supposedly 40% faster than the A7 in the iPad Air and has a claimed 2.5x the graphics performance, but we did see a glimpse of additional capability: with both the A7-equipped iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2 running <em>Asphalt 8 </em>next to each other &ndash; and it looking pretty damn spiffy in either case &ndash; it was clear that the Air&rsquo;s rendering was marginally smoother. When there are more games that make the most of iOS 8&rsquo;s &lsquo;Metal&rsquo; graphics architecture, and the processing grunt in the Air 2, it&#39;s likely the difference will be more stark.</p> <p>Battery life is supposedly unchanged: Apple says you&rsquo;ll get at least 10 hours of browsing time out of the iPad Air 2. We&rsquo;ll test the claim when we get our hands on a review sample.</p> <p>The iPad Air 2 also has the M8X motion coprocessor, which handles processing of all movement data, and now includes a barometer to measure elevation. This takes some work away from the power-hungry A8X, theoretically upping battery life. And ART brings support for 64-bit devices like the Nexus 9.</p> <p>Other behind the scenes tweaks promise an improvement in graphics performance, and Google has worked with the likes of Nvidia and Qualcomm to further improve optimisations with their respective processors.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1006" height="755" title="ART &gt; Dalvik" alt="8 things you need to know about Android Lollipop" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Untitled-11.jpg?1413538584" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Better Battery life </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Android Lollipop introduces a new feature called Project Volta, and its sole focus is on improving battery life.&nbsp;</p> <p>For starters, you&rsquo;ll be able to have far more battery life information at your fingertips, letting you pinpoint possible causes of battery drain.</p> <p>This, coupled with under-the-hood-optimisations, means that developers can produce apps which are even more efficient and less power-hungry.</p> <p>Android Lollipop also now has a built-in battery saver mode, which presumably automatically reduces brightness and cranks down data connections and app syncing, in a similar fashion to battery saver modes found in the LG G3 and HTC One (M8).</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1024" height="768" title="At long last" alt="8 things you need to know about Android Lollipop" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Untitled-12.jpg?1413538584" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s out very soon </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>App developers and select Nexus device owners have been running a preview version since June, but it&#39;s about to go out to a much wider audience.</p> <p>Android Lollipop will launch pre-installed on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/7-things-you-need-know-about-google-nexus-6/news">Nexus 6 smartphone</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-nexus-9-7-things-you-need-know-about-first-android-lollipop-tablet/news">Nexus 9 tablet</a>, along with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/8-things-you-need-know-about-googles-new-nexus-player/news">Nexus Player set-top box</a> in November. As with many lower-cost tablets, it looks pretty anonymous.&nbsp;</p> <p>Essentially, it&#39;s a small slab of plastic. No design flourishes, no bright colours. It&rsquo;s not the sort of tablet to feature in a TV advert where a man with a deep voice tries to convince you it&rsquo;s going to change your life.&nbsp;</p> <p>That&rsquo;s not what the G Pad 7.0 is about. Instead, it&rsquo;s practical. It&rsquo;s small. It&#39;s inoffensive and cheap.</p> <p>And, bascially, it&rsquo;s also fairly nice. The plastic of the back is silky-smooth with a slightly soft finish, there&rsquo;s not too much screen bezel and adults can hold it in one hand. It&rsquo;s pleasantly curvy.&nbsp;</p> <p>It also feels reasonably well-made. The top of it is covered by smooth toughened glass, and while it&rsquo;s not hard to make the edges of the screen ripple under pressure (and only the edges, unusually), it feels as though the LG G Pad 7.0 can withstand at least a little abuse.&nbsp;</p> <p>It comes in white and black, but while there are blue and orange versions available elsewhere these don&rsquo;t seem to have made it to the UK. Yet.</p> <p>Granted, it&rsquo;s not as flash as the metal LG G 8.3, not quite as nice as the Nexus 7. But it&rsquo;s not bad, and for the money that in itself is fairly impressive.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s flexible, too. You only get 8GB of internal storage, but there&rsquo;s a plastic flap hiding a microSD card slot on the top edge. This is a must if you want to put your tablet to work as a little movie jukebox.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Faceplant" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-5.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G Pad 7.0" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-8_0.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> King of the couch potatoes </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G Pad has a hidden trick nestled next to its memory card slot. It&rsquo;s an IR transmitter, something you almost never get in a low-cost tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 has one, but it&rsquo;s a bit more expensive.</p> <p>It sends out the same kind of signals as the remotes for your TV, Blu-ray player and so on, and with the help of the QRemote app, you can nudge your remotes into retirement at the back of the cupboard. You just need to teach the tablet which remotes it needs to emulate, and there&rsquo;s a built-in database which should have you covered.</p> <p>While 7-inch tablets are generally considered portable, this transmitter gives the G Pad 7.0 loads of lounge brownie points. It works pretty well, but those looking to replace an old Logitech Harmony universal remote may be a bit disappointed as you can&rsquo;t do more advanced things like macro commands. To be fair, they were often a bit hit and miss anyway.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s one more stand-out feature in the LG G Pad 7.0. It&rsquo;s not quite as good as the remote-squishing QRemote, but again it&rsquo;s about making the tablet even more useful at home. QPair hooks the tab up to your phone, letting it get notifications from your mobile.&nbsp;</p> <p>It works using Bluetooth, so your phone will need to be in range for this to work. And if you keep your phone in your pocket getting double notifications is a bit annoying. But if your life is like an advert and you drop your phone onto a wireless charger as soon as you get home, it&rsquo;s just the ticket.</p> <p>Aside from these two extras, the LG G Pad 7.0 is pretty much the sort of tablet we expect for &pound;140. But hey, in some rivals, you don&rsquo;t get any little extras.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="TV smarts" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qremote.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G Pad 7.0" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-6.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Not quite razor-sharp </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The LG G Pad 7.0 screen is reasonably decent, but not on the same level as the slightly pricier Nexus 7.</p> <p>Its 7-inch screen packs in a 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution. With 216ppi, it&rsquo;s not super sharp, but it&rsquo;s also nowhere near as blocky as this tablet&rsquo;s 10-inch brother, the LG G Pad 10.1.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also no automatic brightness setting, so you have to set the backlight level manually. This is actually a bit of a pain, because if you set it too high, the screen actually looks worse.&nbsp;</p> <p>Colours also lack the pop you get from some better screens. There are a few for under &pound;200, too: the Nexus 7 and the Asus MeMO Pad HD 7 to name two. Reds look a bit muted, robbing life from the display in a way that&rsquo;s initially hard to put your finger on.&nbsp;</p> <p>The LG G Pad 7.0 doesn&rsquo;t have a terrible screen, though. The G Pad uses the super-popular Snapdragon 400 dual-core 1.2GHz chipset seen in reams of devices from entry-level phones such as the Motorola Moto G right up to ones costing around &pound;300. For a &pound;140 tablet, it&rsquo;s the perfect fit.&nbsp;</p> <p>It also means the tablet can easily handle high-end 3D games without seeming like a wheezing couch potato whipped into running a marathon. You only miss out on a few little graphical effects in some of the more ambitious games compared to a top-end tablet, and all the titles ee tried ran smoothly.</p> <p>In the Geekbench 3 benchmark, the LG G Pad 7.0 comes out with 1138 points, which is exactly what you&rsquo;d expect from a tablet of this spec.</p> <p>This sort of power also gives the LG G pad 7.0 more than enough power to tackle Full HD videos, although you&rsquo;d be better off sticking to 720p as the screen isn&rsquo;t going to make the most of anything more detailed anyway. There&rsquo;s no good video player app pre-installed, though, so you&rsquo;ll need to seek one out from Google Play.</p> <p>Games do show up the lower screen resolution a bit, too, so if you&rsquo;re going to use the tablet an awful lot for entertainment you might want to consider upgrading to either the Nexus 7 or LG G Pad 8.3 &ndash; both of which have 1080p displays. Of course, both are also a fair bit more expensive. This isn&rsquo;t a no-compromise tablet, but it is nice &rsquo;n&rsquo; cheap.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-g/best-cheap-smartphone-you-can-buy/feature" target="_blank">Group test: the best cheap smartphone you can buy</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="View from the rear" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-12.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Definitely not the best camera around </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In some areas, the LG G Pad 7.0&rsquo;s dedication to plugging in features rather than specifically good features is a bit too apparent. You can catch some of the tweaks in action in the video walkthrough below.</p> <p>Today&rsquo;s event was strongly focused on business and enterprise users, as Microsoft hopes to finally upgrade many of those users from Windows 7.
