We&rsquo;ll update the story with local pricing and availability when we hear from HP.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://gizmodo.com/hps-big-new-tablet-lineup-includes-a-12-inch-monster-1680630809" target="_blank">Gizmodo</a> and <a href="http://www.gsmarena.com/hp_annouces_multiple_tablets_a_massive_12inch_android_slate-news-10842.php" target="_blank">GSM Arena</a>, image: <a href="http://www.gsmarena.com/hp_annouces_multiple_tablets_a_massive_12inch_android_slate-news-10842.php" target="_blank">GSM Arena</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tablets/top-ten">The 10 best tablets in the world right now</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/hp-pro-slate-12-giant-tablet-comes-cool-stylus/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/android/hp-pro-slate-12-giant-tablet-comes-cool-stylus/news#comments Android HP Slate Tablets Wed, 21 Jan 2015 10:00:16 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1458145 at http://www.stuff.tv CES 2015: An interview with Sir Hossein Yassaie from Imagination Technologies, the man you didn't know built all your tech http://www.stuff.tv/imagination-technologies/ces-2015/ces-2015-interview-sir-hossein-yassaie-imagination-technologies-ma <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> He&#039;s the founder of the company who made the graphics hardware for every iPhone and iPad, and a very interesting chap </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/mips-creator-ci20_0.jpg?1421287364" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>You may not have heard of Sir Hossein Yassaie, but you have used his technology.</p> <p>Ever listened to a DAB radio? Case in point: here&rsquo;s an Android tablet that thinks it&rsquo;s a Surface, inside and out.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="p1">Like the large, two-stage kickstand that&rsquo;s very reminiscent to the Surface Pro 2&rsquo;s. How about the very similar contours on the body of the tablet? And who can overlook the detachable keyboard, which has an essentially identical-looking magnetic connector? It&rsquo;s uncanny, really, although the introduction of colour options here is a new touch.</p> <p class="p1">The Surface-like experience extends to the software, as well. Jide&rsquo;s Ultra-Tablet uses the company&rsquo;s own Remix OS, which is based on Android 4.4.2 and designed solely for larger screens. But what that really means is that it brings a strong dose of modern Windows influence into Android, with very familiar-looking apps, as well as a taskbar lined with app icons.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Jide Ultra-Tablet" alt="Jide Ultra-Tablet" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/jide-ultratablet-keyboard.jpg?1420865790" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="p1">That said, blending the two massively popular operating systems isn&rsquo;t necessarily a bad thing. We can&rsquo;t argue with that on the surface (pun intended), and helpful features like the ability to run Android phone apps in correctly-sized windows sounds great.</p> <p class="p1">Likewise, the hardware specs seem quite good. You&rsquo;ll find an 11.6in, 1080p IPS multitouch screen, with an NVIDIA Tegra 4 plus 2GB RAM and 64GB storage within (also a microSD slot). Claimed battery life is eight hours on a charge, and there&#39;s a 2MP camera for video calls.</p> <p class="p2">The Core M is supposedly good for &#39;everyday computing&#39;, so unlike a Surface or a Macbook, you won&#39;t be playing 2015&#39;s games on the T300 Chi. Powered by either the Tegra K1 or X1, Drive CX can power up to 17 million pixels &ndash; more than ten times the amount in current high-end in-car computers.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2015/01/04/ces-tegra-x1-nvidia-drive-auto/" target="_blank">Nvidia</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/why-you-should-be-pumped-about-self-driving-cars/feature">Google, Drive: Why you should be pumped about self-driving cars</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang talks Nvidia Drive at CES 2015" alt="Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang talks Nvidia Drive at CES 2015" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nvidia-drive.jpg?1421667435" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/nvidia/ces-2015-nvidia-tegra-x1-world-s-first-teraflop-mobile-processor/news#comments CES 2015 Nvidia Self-Driving Cars Smartphones Tablets Mon, 05 Jan 2015 10:21:54 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1456684 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple iPad Pro to get Livescribe-style smart pen? http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-pro-get-livescribe-style-smart-pen/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Newly-granted Apple patent suggests the company is toying with a Galaxy Note-esque stylus </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Pro to get Livescribe-style smart pen?" alt="Apple iPad Pro to get Livescribe-style smart pen?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/apple-stylus.jpg?1420245213" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Despite Steve Jobs&rsquo; suggestion in the past that any tablet maker that includes a stylus with their slate has &ldquo;blown it&rdquo;, Apple could be making plans to offer a smart pen accessory with future iPad models.</p> <p>The company has just been granted a patent in the US for a &ldquo;communicating stylus&rdquo; able to &ldquo;talk&rdquo; to digital devices via wireless networking. Like the existing Livescribe 3 stylus, it&rsquo;d be able to store drawings and handwritten notes for later transfer to a computer, tablet or phone.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Where the Livescribe 3 uses an infrared camera and requires special paper to work, however, Apple&rsquo;s stylus creates notes and sketches through its movements: onboard accelerometers activate when the user draws or writes and can send the info they collect in real-time to a device (the Livescribe 3 stores notes and transfers them after the fact via Bluetooth). Data can be collected when the stylus&rsquo;s nib is touching a surface, when it&rsquo;s manually turned on, when it&rsquo;s picked up or when it&rsquo;s removed from a dock.</p> <p>The data collected by the pen can be sent to multiple devices simultaneously, and its accelerometers allow it to measure movement in three dimensions, meaning it can track motion no matter its angle &ndash; it could even do so in mid-air.</p> <p>As always when it comes to patents, the existence of this document does not mean Apple plans to make the invention it describes. If not, and it was a different smartphone or tablet, you might be in the minority: app analytics firm Flurry reports that Apple devices claimed 51.3% of all new device activations during the week leading up to and including Christmas Day.</p> <p>Flurry collects its information based on installations of the 600,000+ apps it tracks, and not only was Apple the lead manufacturer of devices activated worldwide during that span (with the iPhone 6 leading all individual devices), but it wasn&rsquo;t even a close race. Samsung was next with 17.7%, Microsoft/Nokia was third with 5.8%, and Sony and LG mustered 1.6% and 1.4% respectively.</p> <p>&ldquo;While the holidays in general and Christmas in particular are not the sole indicator of the smartphone market share and trends,&rdquo; cautions the report, &ldquo;it is safe to say that Apple&rsquo;s newly released iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have had a blockbuster holiday season.&rdquo;</p> <p>On that last point, the report also notes that phablet activations surged over last year. Just 4% of device activations last year during this span were phablets, but that number rose to 13% this year. Meanwhile, tablet activations dipped (especially in the full-size category), and small phone activations now comprise just 2% of those recorded.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.flurry.com/blog/flurry-insights/apple-and-apps-dominated-christmas-2014">Flurry</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten">The Top 10 Smartphones</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Halo 5 beta is live, plus limited editions revealed </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Hyped for&nbsp;<em>Halo 5: Guardians</em>, next fall&rsquo;s massive Xbox One exclusive? Devs have even got parts&nbsp;of Battlefield 4 working on the thing.&nbsp;</p> <p>If you don&rsquo;t mind paying an extra &pound;80 then the&nbsp;iPad is the full package.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Stuff says:&nbsp;</strong>★★★★★</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">Apple iPad Air 2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" title="Google Nexus 9 vs Apple iPad Air 2" alt="Google Nexus 9 vs Apple iPad Air 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iPad-Air-2-Hero.JPG?1421121408" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Triple-core Apple A8X CPU<br />8MP front camera,<br />1.2MP rear<br />240x169.5x6.1 mm<br />437g (Wi-Fi version)<br />444g (4G version)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Nexus 9 (£320) </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>What&rsquo;s the story?</strong><br />The first new Nexus tablet since the 2013 Nexus 7 shakes things up with an iPad-shaped 4:3 screen, super-powered 192-core graphics chip and the new Android 5.0 Lollipop OS. It&rsquo;s also &pound;80 cheaper than the iPad Air 2, giving you some change to tool up with accessories.</p> <p><strong>Is it any good?</strong><br />The Nexus 9 isn&rsquo;t going to make jaws drop like an iPad Air 2 might. With a plastic rear and a thicker body, it&rsquo;s more ordinary-looking and feeling. The new, squatter aspect doesn&rsquo;t half make it great to use compared with earlier Androids, though &ndash; especially for sofa-based browsing. And the 8.9-inch screen offers exactly the same number of pixels as the iPad.</p> <p>Google seems to want to make Android a bit more iPad-like in its style, too. Lollipop shakes off many of Android&rsquo;s residual nerdy bits, and the smartly restrained colours of its interface would make Farrow &amp; Ball proud. Sadly, there are still many Android apps that aren&rsquo;t optimised for tablets, and one of Android&rsquo;s great advantages (removable storage) has been left out.&nbsp;</p> <p>For the hardcore crowd, the Tegra K1 brings oodles of power, but we struggled to find a real-world difference. They&rsquo;re both as fast and smooth as a freshly buttered otter.</p> <p>The design isn&rsquo;t as pristine, but it&rsquo;s the most convincing iPad-style Android alternative.</p> <p><strong>Stuff says:&nbsp;</strong>★★★★☆</p> <p><b>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nexus-9/review" target="_blank">Google Nexus 9 review</a></b></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Google Nexus 9 vs Apple iPad Air 2" alt="Google Nexus 9 vs Apple iPad Air 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-14_0.jpg?1421121408" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>8.9in 2048x1536 IPS LCD<br />Dual-core 2.5GHz<br />Nvidia Tegra K1<br />8MP front camera,&nbsp;1.6MP rear<br />228.2x153.7x7.9mm<br />425g (Wi-Fi version)<br />436g (4G version)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPad Air 2 walks away victorious, and is the tablet we&#39;d recommend if you&#39;re sitting on the fence.&nbsp;</p> <p>Apple&#39;s build quality is far superior, with a solid, deliciously thin metal body on offer, compared to the Nexus 9&#39;s plastic build.</p> <p>iOS tablets app remain on top too, with more dedicated slicker, prettier made-for-tablet apps residing on Apple&#39;s app store.</p> <p>If you&#39;re an Android fan of course then there&#39;s no competition however: the Nexus 9 will be the way to go.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tablets/top-ten" target="_blank">These are the top 10 best tablets in the world</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="424" title="Google Nexus 9 vs Apple iPad Air 2" alt="Google Nexus 9 vs Apple iPad Air 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iPad-Air-2-in-hand_2.JPG?1421121408" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/google-nexus-9-vs-apple-ipad-air-2/feature#comments Apple Google iPad Air 2 Nexus 9 Tablets Sun, 14 Dec 2014 10:26:30 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1455221 at http://www.stuff.tv
