Being a step down, the A5100 might not be quite as nimble as the A6000 when it comes to locking onto a subject, but Sony says it&rsquo;s still very, very quick. There&rsquo;s also the same BIONZ X image processor on board.</p> <p>The A5100 also comes with Wi-Fi and NFC (for image-sharing and remote control to and from a smartphone or tablet), a wide sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600, full HD movie recording in a choice of three formats (including the new, pro-friendly XAVC S, which captures up to 50Mbps of data) and a new tilting touchscreen that flips 180 degrees and provides the majority of the control options for the camera (there aren&rsquo;t many physical buttons and dials, you see).</p> <p>There&rsquo;s no electronic viewfinder, which is a shame, because Sony is really good at making them &ndash; but we suppose if you&rsquo;re desperate for one, there&rsquo;s the A6000. The A5100 is designed to offer much of its big brother&rsquo;s functionality but in a slightly svelter package.</p> <p>Sony says the A5100 will be available in the UK from mid-September, priced at &pound;420 for the body only, &pound;550 with a 16-50mm lens, or &pound;760 with 16-50mm and 55-210mm lenses.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://presscentre.sony.eu/content/detail.aspx?ReleaseID=9897&amp;NewsAreaID=2&amp;HUserID=L1GHAZWBYDt1VFPw1jhdRA..&amp;ClientID=-1" target="_blank">Sony</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a6000/review">Sony A6000 review</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony A5100: tiny and turbocharged </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a5100-camera-tiny-touchy-and-turbocharged/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Sony System Cameras Mon, 18 Aug 2014 09:36:45 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1445169 at http://www.stuff.tv Sony A6000 http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a6000/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony&#039;s new system camera may be tiny – but it packs a big photographic punch </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony&#039;s new system camera may be tiny – but it packs a big photographic punch" alt="Sony&#039;s new system camera may be tiny – but it packs a big photographic punch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/sony-a6000-wall.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>The A6000 is Sony&rsquo;s new mid-range compact system camera, a 24.3MP E mount model that replaces the NEX-7 and slots underneath the full-frame A7 series. While the camera may be small, its large grip means it doesn&rsquo;t feel awkward or unsteady in the hand.</p> <p>The dimensions and weight in our spec box below do not take into account whichever lens you&rsquo;ve mounted on the camera, but the two we used (a Zeiss 16-70mm zoom and Zeiss 35mm prime) both felt fine and well balanced on the camera. The camera&rsquo;s new BIONZ X image processing engine helps too, doing a fine job of reducing noise where it appears as well as offering a huge ISO range of 100-25600. With a reasonably fast lens attached, you can snap away in very murky conditions and still end the evening with plenty of usably sharp photos.</p> <p>Speaking of lenses, we should point out that the images we&rsquo;ve posted here were taken with Sony&rsquo;s Zeiss Vario-Tesser 16-70mm f/4 zoom and Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f/2.8 prime lenses, which are priced at &pound;840 and &pound;700 respectively. Both, in other words, are significantly pricier than the A6000 body itself. Cheaper E mount lenses may not perform quite as well (you can buy it in a kit with the Vario-Tessar for &pound;1,300, with a 16-50mm power zoom lens for &pound;670, or with 16-50mm and 55-210mm zooms for &pound;880).</p> <p>On the video front, the A6000 is able to capture 1080p at 50, 25 or 24fps in either AVCHD or MP4 format. We found the video quality to be excellent and the stereo sound to be clear, even without an external microphone. It&rsquo;s not quite up to the stellar standards of the full-frame Sony A7R, but then the A6000 costs &pound;1,000 less&hellip;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a7r/review">Sony A7R review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A6000 sample image" alt="Sony A6000 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7000-sample-5_0.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A6000 sample image" alt="Sony A6000 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7000-sample-8.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A6000 sample image" alt="Sony A6000 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7000-sample-9.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A6000 sample image" alt="Sony A6000 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7000-sample-3.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Usability: View to a thrill </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sony&rsquo;s OLED electronic viewfinders are consistently fantastic, and that&rsquo;s the case here: clamp your eye to the EVF and you&rsquo;re rewarded with a large, bright and pin-sharp image that damn near fools you into thinking you&rsquo;re looking through an optical viewfinder. This, of course, is arguably better than optical, because it can overlay more information on screen and show you a preview of exactly how your shot is going to turn out. If you prefer, you can compose shots using the 3in tilting screen, which works well enough.</p> <p>The physical controls are small out of necessity, but the mode and adjustment dials are pleasingly chunky, and we didn&rsquo;t have any issues with changing settings on the fly using these and the other buttons.</p> <p>One thing we have to highlight is the incredible speed and accuracy of the A6000&rsquo;s autofocus. The A7R felt a little quicker to get a lock, but at this point we&rsquo;re talking milliseconds difference, so perhaps we&rsquo;re just subconsciouly assuming the A7R&rsquo;s hefty price tag makes it the speedier. The A6000 has 179 phase-detection focus points and 25 contrast-detection focus points, and between them they allow the camera to focus almost as soon as you start to press the shutter button. We&rsquo;d say it&rsquo;s faster than any DSLR we&rsquo;ve used.</p> <p>Unlike a lot of system cameras, there&rsquo;s no optical image stabilisation inside the A6000&rsquo;s body. We didn&rsquo;t find it a problem in our few weeks with the camera, as most of Sony&rsquo;s E-mount lenses are either equipped with stabilisation or fast enough to not need it. But if you&rsquo;re using slower, non-stabilised lenses you could notice some blurrier results when shooting handheld.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The A6000&#039;s control layout works well, despite the tiny button sizes" alt="The A6000&#039;s control layout works well, despite the tiny button sizes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a6000-wall-rear.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The screen tilts both up and down (but not left or right)" alt="The screen tilts both up and down (but not left or right)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a6000-screen.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony A6000 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sensor: 24.3MP APS-C Exmor CMOS</p> <p>Max ISO: 25600</p> <p>Video format: MP4 and AVCHD, 1080p at 60/50, 25 or 24fps</p> <p>Screen: 3in 921,600-dot LCD</p> <p>Electronic viewfinder: 1,440,000-dot touch sensitive OLED</p> <p>Connectivity: Wi-Fi, NFC, micro USB, micro HDMI</p> <p>Dimensions: 120 x 66.9 x 45.1mm</p> <p>Weight: 344g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Connectivity: NFC and Wi-Fi </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Like an increasing number of new cameras, Wi-Fi and NFC come included here. the camera can shoot full-resolution photos at up to 5fps; the shutter is quieter and more durable; and a new split-screen Live View mode allows you to check sharpness in one half of the screen while the other shows the full frame as it will appear. However, a quick glance through Flickr or Facebook should demonstrate that people still struggle to understand what makes a good monochromatic photo. But Stuff is here to help: we&rsquo;ve put together this short guide to try and help you grasp the black and white basics.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Contrast is key </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Because black and white photos remove colour, the viewer&rsquo;s attention is focussed on other things. Sharpness, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">depth of field</a> and composition are of course important, but contrast is arguably the key factor in how much impact a black and white photograph holds.</p> <p>In most black and white images, you&rsquo;ll be looking for big contrasts between the darkest and lightest areas of the image. That&rsquo;s where the drama comes from. If your original photo doesn&rsquo;t have as much contrast as you&rsquo;d like, get it into Photoshop or another editing app and adjust the settings. Remember: a good colour photo won&rsquo;t necessarily make a good black and white one.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&rsquo;s Guide to Photography: What is bokeh &ndash; and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Look to bring bright whites and inky blacks into close proximity" alt="Look to bring bright whites and inky blacks into close proximity" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photo-guide-black-white-contrast.jpg?1403748800" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Polarising filters are your friend </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;re shooting for black and white outside on a sunny day, attaching a circular polarising filter will help provide a more dramatic, contrasty monochromatic sky. The GH4 offers more format options than most mirrorless cameras: you can record in MP4, AVCHD or MOV, at a variety of resolutions and frame rates.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&#39;s Guide to Photography: What is bokeh &ndash; and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Panasonic Lumix GH4 verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The GH4 is pitched as a professional-quality camera and, while it might not unseat the top-end DSLRs from Nikon and Canon in the hearts and hands of people who make their living from photography, it&rsquo;s certainly the most enthusiast-friendly of Panasonic&rsquo;s Micro Four Thirds cameras thus far.</p> <p>Build quality is superb, autofocus is fast and accurate, still image quality is among the best that we&rsquo;ve seen from a mirrorless camera and video quality? Blur is bad, right? Not always. Just as you can make nice pictures by blurring the backgrounds with a bit of bokeh, another classic trick every snapper should know is the long exposure: by deliberately picking a slower shutter speed, you can capture smears of motion and dreamy patterns of light that make your picture tell a story. It&#39;s a piece of cake to do - just set up your camera and start mucking about.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Set up and steady </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;re not an expert on manual settings, fear not. Simply set your camera&rsquo;s mode dial to Shutter Priority, which will be marked &lsquo;S&rsquo; or &lsquo;Tv&rsquo;. This auto-adjusts all the settings apart from the shutter speed, freeing you up to experiment with speeds - try anything from one second to thirty seconds fro long exposures. On some phones, like the Nokia Lumia 920 and 1020, you can set the exposure to several seconds.</p> <p>Your next step is to keep the camera from moving, because if the camera moves while the shutter&rsquo;s open, your picture will be blurrier than Keith Richards&rsquo; memories of the 1970s. So, use a tripod if you&rsquo;ve got one, or a solid resting place like a table or a wall if you haven&rsquo;t. Set the shutter to self-timer, so you&rsquo;re not touching the camera when it takes the picture.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-how-take-better-photos-your-kids/feature">how to take better photos of tiny people</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" alt="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/shutterpriority.jpg?1404441946" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Try writing your name </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Once you&rsquo;re set up, try a basic bit of &lsquo;light painting&rsquo;: wait until dark, grab a torch and set your exposure time to anything from 10-30 seconds. There are some pictures that everyone has a go at, once they start playing with long exposures - streams of traffic at night and fairgrounds are the main culprits - so start by replicating these classics, then have a look around and think about how you can change them. Move to some traffic lights, for example, and you can get both the stationary cars and the light-streaks of them moving. You can get some dazzling results from fireworks, too - anywhere you see moving lights, get your camera steady and try a few shots, increasing the exposure time with each shot.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lomography/stuffs-guide-photography-how-shoot-panoramas/feature">how to shoot amazing panoramas</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" alt="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/fair.jpg?1404441946" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> use it in the day </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Long exposures aren&rsquo;t just for the night. It&rsquo;s also a great way to convey movement - crowds, moving water and more can be blurred into patterns of frenetic activity by leaving the shutter open a bit longer than usual. Beyond that, you can buy a Neutral Density filter, sometimes called an ND filter. Large, lag-free and boasting a resolution so high that you almost feel it&rsquo;s an optical viewfinder and not essentially a live video feed, the OLED EVF shows you exactly how the image you&rsquo;re about take will end up looking: bokeh, exposure adjustments, depth of field are all previewed as you change settings.</p> <p>The 3in rear screen is also worthy of a mention. And there&rsquo;s excellent noise suppression, even at high ISO sensitivities, to help reduce unwanted graininess. That means shooting without flash in low light conditions is not only possible but delivers fantastic results: sharp, clean-looking pictures with little sign of noise.</p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/14242997182/in/set-72157644794903505/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></p> <p>In brighter conditions, photos are even better. Because of the large sensor, there&rsquo;s a scale to these images that few DSLRs can touch, and it&rsquo;s also very easy to achieve a narrow depth of field, blurring the background or foreground of shots while keeping your subject in sharp focus.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&rsquo;s Guide to Photography: What is bokeh &ndash; and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A7R photo sample" alt="Sony A7R photo sample" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-sample-will-matt.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A7R photo sample" alt="Sony A7R photo sample" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-sample-alice.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="801" title="Sony A7R photo sample" alt="Sony A7R photo sample" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-sample-hallway.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Video star </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>These traits extend to the A7R&rsquo;s video footage, which looks utterly glorious &ndash; almost Hollywood-esque in its smoothness. Thankfully there&rsquo;s no need to go fully manual, and Sony&rsquo;s automatic modes are, as ever, scarily clever at determining what kind of thing you&rsquo;re shooting and what the settings need to be.</p> <p>The autofocus here is devilishly quick and accurate. Sony has even given it the ability to recognise the pupils in subject&rsquo;s eyes and focus on them, which keep faces sharp when shooting with a short depth of field.</p> <p>One possible criticism: there&rsquo;s no optical image stabilisation inside the body &ndash; many of Sony&rsquo;s lenses do however come with it equipped. We didn&rsquo;t find it an issue with the fast F2.8 lens, but it could conceivably hamper performance with slower lenses.</p> <p>The camera also comes with Wi-Fi and NFC, which allow you to connect to a smartphone or tablet. Personally, we find this a little pointless &ndash; transferring large images via Wi-Fi to a phone is far slower and fiddlier than it needs to be to become &ldquo;a thing&rdquo;, and transferring them to PC is much easier by cable or memory card. But some might get some use out of Sony&rsquo;s PlayMemories app, which allows remote viewing and remote control of the shutter.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-how-and-why-you-should-buy-prime-lens/feature" target="_blank">Stuff&#39;s Guide to Photography: why you need a prime lens, and how to buy one</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" alt="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-hand-rear.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" alt="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-review-top.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony A7R verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We love this camera and were less than keen on giving it back to Sony after our two-week review period. Many DSLR and compact system camera owners never think to go beyond the basic zoom that comes with their new camera, but they're missing out - here's why a simple, high-quality prime lens can do more for your photos.&nbsp;</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> What is a prime lens? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Basically, it's a lens that doesn't zoom. Any lens with a fixed focal length (like 30mm or 50mm) is considered a prime lens. This means primes are less versatile than zoom lenses, but in general they offer better optical quality, because they're built specifically to be perfect at one focal length. And because they don't need the&nbsp;extra&nbsp;moving parts and bits of glass that zooms need, they can be smaller, lighter and cheaper. Although this being camera kit, they can also be eye-wateringly expensive, as we'll see later.&nbsp;</p> <p>So mainly you want a prime because it'll improve your pictures, and because you can afford one, but they're also a great way to change the way you shoot. With a zoom, you can stand still and zoom in, but with a prime forces you to move around for the shot you want, and in doing so makes you think more about how you're composing your picture.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="1794" title="A 50mm prime allows you to easily achieve a narrow depth of field" alt="A 50mm prime allows you to easily achieve a narrow depth of field" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bruce-50mm-lens.jpg?1401191619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Pick your focal length </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The length of lens you buy will affect what sort of pictures you can take, and the choice is huge. Various factors determine DOF including: sensor/film size; lens aperture; and distance from the camera to the objects in the scene.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> There is both “good” and “bad” bokeh </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Each lens&rsquo; characteristics &ndash; namely lens aberration and the shape of its aperture &ndash; determine the sort of bokeh it creates. Having tried out Sony&#39;s new Alpha 77 II camera, we can see what he was getting at.</p> <p>The&nbsp;DLSR-style snapper snaps on to your subject so quickly it seems to mess with time - did I even press the shutter button yet? No, that&#39;s not a typo; while Canon&#39;s top two APS-C cameras, the 7D and 70D, have 19 AF points each, and Nikon&#39;s D7100 has 51, the a77 II has 79.&nbsp;</p> <p>What this means in use is that pretty much whichever direction you point the camera, it locks on to a subject instantly. Seriously - we tried focusing on distant subjects followed swiftly by near subjects followed swiftly by subjects on the edge of the frame, and it nailed it every time.</p> <p>But be warned. While you might know which subject you&#39;re aiming at, the autofocus can&#39;t, so narrowing your options down a little will often be the best option for static subjects.</p> <p>We tried&nbsp;using the Wide area mode, which spreads the full 79 AF&nbsp;points out over the whole frame, and found that unless we were aiming at a clearly defined subject in a relatively clear area, the a77 II often made the &#39;wrong&#39; choice. </p> <p>Really it was our error, rather than the camera&#39;s - you can&#39;t aim at a crowd and expect your camera to guess that you want the third person from the left. And besides, it&#39;s easily fixed by switching to&nbsp;one of the many other AF zone options, or using the centre-point alone. It&#39;s merely a reminder that sometimes you can have too much of a good thing.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/fujifilm/fujifilm-x-t1/review" target="_blank">Fujifilm X-T1 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The a77 II takes its moment in the spotlight" alt="Sony Alpha 77 II DSLR camera hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-alpha-77-ii-review-011.jpg?1400068454" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> NEED FOR SPEED II </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Where all those AF points do come in handy though is when shooting a moving target.</p> <p>Sony&#39;s marketing around the camera goes big on its action-shooting talents, boasting of it having 5-step tracking adjustment, enhanced focus area modes, AF range control, Eye AF and blah blah blah. In English: it&#39;s really good at tracking moving subjects.</p> <p>So we put that to the test in our hands-on time with it, shooting moving people and vehicles with excellent results. AF tracking continues to work while you&#39;re firing off burst shots of up to 12fps, meaning that you genuinely can focus on a car, keep clicking as it drives past you and get pretty accurate focus throughout. It even does well with subjects coming directly towards you, something which trips up many cameras.</p> <p>One thing to note is that while you can rattle off up to 60 JPEGs in succession, that number falls to about 25 for RAW images. Still plenty for most purposes, then.</p> <p>Video maxes out at 1080p@60fps, so no 4K, but on the other hand all of the a77 II&#39;s clever tracking tech works when you&#39;re in movie mode too. We know which of these two features we&#39;re more bothered about.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lytro/lytro-introduces-illum-pro-level-light-field-camera/news" target="_blank">Lytro introduces Illum, a pro-level camera that lets you focus after you shoot</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="AF tracking is the a77 II&#039;s big talent" alt="Sony Alpha 77 II DSLR camera hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-alpha-77-ii-review-012_0.jpg?1400068454" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SHARP SHOOTER </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course all that speed would be wasted if the resulting images weren&#39;t nice to look at, but fortunately they&#39;re excellent.</p> <p>Noise is minimal, detail plentiful, edges are crisp and colours are natural. It&#39;s clearly also helped by Sony&#39;s latest Bionz X processor, which both improves low-light shots - it goes up to ISO 25,600, with noise non-existant before ISO 1600 - and speeds up all-round operation. You&#39;ll notice that speed not just in autofocus and burst shooting but also in simple tasks such as switching from the rear LCD screen to the electronic viewfinder.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-camera/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Colours are accurate" alt="Sony Alpha 77 II DSLR camera hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-alpha-77-ii-review-005.jpg?1400068454" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="100% crop - note lack of noise at ISO 800" alt="Sony Alpha 77 II DSLR camera hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-alpha-77-ii-review-006.jpg?1400068454" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Exposure is spot on" alt="Sony Alpha 77 II DSLR camera hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-alpha-77-ii-review-007.jpg?1400068454" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="100% crop: there&#039;s loads of detail on view" alt="Sony Alpha 77 II DSLR camera hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-alpha-77-ii-review-008.jpg?1400068454" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> FINDER, KEEPER </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Speaking of the EVF, it&#39;s one of the best we&#39;ve used. Personally, I don&#39;t like EVFs - optical viewfinders always seem clearer, brighter, more accurate, and EVFs can struggle to keep up with fast action. But there are plenty at Stuff who disagree with me (about most things) and on this occasion they&#39;ve got a point. The 2.4k-dot OLED &#39;Tru-Finder&#39; on the a77 II has 100% coverage, 1.09x magnification and plenty of space for displaying every bit of info you might want to see, all of which are advantages over rivals such as the Nikon D7100 and Canon 70D.</p> <p>Better still, what you see through the viewfinder really is what you get: if a scene looks to be too dark, so will the resulting image. On a traditional DSLR, you have to rely on the camera correctly exposing the scene for you - and they don&#39;t always get it right. Of course, any compact system camera with an EVF will share this advantage.</p> <p>The 3in LCD is a cracker too: big, bright and capable of twisting into pretty much any configuration you choose. There&#39;s a pop-up flash and multi-interface shoe for external flashes and microphones, Wi-Fi and NFC and the customary creative modes which you&#39;ll never use.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nikon/nikon-d3300/review" target="_blank">Nikon D3300 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Many of the a77 II&#039;s buttons are customisable" alt="Sony Alpha 77 II DSLR camera hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-alpha-77-ii-review-009.jpg?1400068454" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SONY A77 II - INITIAL VERDICT </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We didn&#39;t spend enough time with the a77 II to be able to properly judge it, but what we can say for sure is that we enjoyed every minute we had with it.</p> <p>Shooting with it was a joy, the pictures we took with it were impressive and, if gadget journalists got paid more, we&#39;d buy one tomorrow.
