That means if you&rsquo;re using a non E-mount lens (one of Sony&rsquo;s A-mount lenses or a third-party lens for example) then you&rsquo;re not getting any stabilisation at all. And that means longer shutter speed times and more problems getting sharp, steady results when shooting handheld or in low-light situations.</p> <p>The A7 II, on the other hand, will optically stabilise any lens you attach to it (although lenses made for systems other than Sony&rsquo;s E- or A-mount will require some manual data input of focal length to work). And not just regular 2-, 3- or 4-axis stabilisation &ndash; 5-axis stabilisation is designed to counteract the different types of camera shake that happen in different shooting situations: roll stabilisation helps with video filming, while x and y stabilisation aid macro shooting.</p> <p>We had some hands-on time with an early sample of the A7 II, but weren&rsquo;t allowed to take any shots with it. It&rsquo;s had some design tweaks too: a larger grip; a softer, more comfortable eyepiece for the OLED viewfinder; a crisper rear screen; better build quality; and some small changes to the layout of the controls. There&rsquo;s a 40 percent boost in startup time, a 30 percent boost to autofocus speed and the addition of XAVC to the available movie formats. So, while it looks a lot like the original A7 (which Sony says will remain on sale after the A7 II launches) it does feel like a significant upgrade.</p> <p>The Sony A7 II looks set to go on sale in January 2015. The UK price is yet to be confirmed, but it&rsquo;ll cost US$1,700 body-only and US$2,000 with a 28-70mm kit lens Stateside &ndash; prices which currently convert to &pound;1,075 and &pound;1,270 respectively.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a7r/review">Sony A7R review</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony A7 II: Hands-on with the anti-shake superstar" alt="Sony A7 II: Hands-on with the anti-shake superstar" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7-ii-2.jpg?1417083756" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a7-ii-hands-anti-shake-superstar/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a7-ii-hands-anti-shake-superstar/news#comments Sony System Cameras Wed, 26 Nov 2014 17:40:05 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1453996 at http://www.stuff.tv Stuff Gadget Awards 2014: These are the 8 best system cameras of the year http://www.stuff.tv/gadget-awards-2014/stuff-gadget-awards-2014-these-are-8-best-system-cameras-year/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s been another fantastic year for lens-swapping snappers. It&rsquo;s wee. It&rsquo;s tiny. It&rsquo;s little. Dinky, even. And that&#39;s both a good and a bad thing.</p> <p>First, the bad.&nbsp;</p> <p>The A5100 lacks&nbsp;the large grip of the A6000 to help you hold it steady, merely having a small textured bump to cling to. With the (also compact) 16-50mm kit lens attached the thing has a nice balance in your mitts, but attach larger, heavier bits of glass and things start to feel a little less poised. </p> <p>Morever, because there&rsquo;s no viewfinder (more on that below) you&rsquo;ll be framing shots using the screen and thus holding the camera out in front of you, which makes it even less steady. It&rsquo;s not a huge deal-breaker in our opinion, but it&rsquo;s worth noting &ndash; especially if you happen to be of the larger-fisted persuasion.</p> <p>But then there&#39;s the good. </p> <p>Our hands are probably best described as &ldquo;normal-sized&rdquo;, and we had no real problems using it. The diminutive size and light weight (it&rsquo;s just 283g with battery and memory card) make it one of the most convenient system cameras to carry around everywhere. It won&rsquo;t fit in your pocket (unless you wear really, really big jeans), but put it in a bag with one of Sony&rsquo;s smaller E-mount lenses on it and you won&rsquo;t even know you&rsquo;re carrying it.</p> <p>The exterior is tough plastic, which seems acceptably solid and sturdy to us. The A6000 has a metal body, and Sony&rsquo;s reasoning is probably that those who want to go down that particular route can pay a little more for the next model up.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The A5100 is almost preternaturally small" alt="Sony A5100 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a5100-in-hand.jpg?1412948222" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Usability </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As mentioned above, there&rsquo;s no electronic viewfinder here. While that helps keep the A5100&rsquo;s size as small as possible, it does mean you&rsquo;re forced into using the 3in TFT screen for composing shots. Personally, we like using a viewfinder: they&rsquo;re handy on a sunny day when reflections make the LCD barely visible; they let you hold the camera up to your face, which helps steady it; and they&rsquo;re great for situations where you don&rsquo;t want the screen distracting or irritating people around you, for instance at concerts. Plus,&nbsp;Sony has a recent history of making brilliant, sharp OLED EVFs.&nbsp;</p> <p>That said, the screen is sharp and bright, and it&rsquo;s also touch-sensitive. While this can be a source of annoyance in some cameras, Sony has made the physical controls good enough that you don&rsquo;t need to use the touchscreen at all if you hate it &ndash; and at the same time, features such as touch focus (tap a spot on-screen and the A5100 focuses there and takes a photo immediately) are frequently useful. We do wish it was a little bigger and more sensitive to your taps, however.</p> <p>The screen also tilts upwards up to 180 degrees, which means you can face it forward (hello, better selfies) or up (hello, shooting with the camera held at waist level). Again, handy stuff.</p> <p>As with all Sony&rsquo;s E-mount cameras, there&rsquo;s no optical image stabilisation built into the A5100. Where it feels OIS is necessary, Sony builds it into lenses, so it isn&rsquo;t a huge deal if you&rsquo;re using E-mount glass. However, if you&rsquo;re mounting other lenses via an adapter, you&rsquo;ll need a steadier hand than you might with some competitors&rsquo; system cameras.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The screen flips 180 degrees to facilitate selfies" alt="Sony A5100 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a5100-screen-flip.jpg?1412948222" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Super-speedy autofocus </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As with its beefier sibling the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a6000/review">A6000</a>, the A5100 has Sony&rsquo;s latest hybrid autofocus system, marrying 179-point phase detection with 25-point contrast detection. Those words might not mean much to you, but translated into normal human words they indicate that it&rsquo;s very, very fast and very, very accurate when it comes to autofocus.</p> <p>Half-press the shutter button and you&rsquo;ll find the A5100 locking on to subjects almost instantly (and staying locked even if those subjects move, thanks to the superb tracking focus mode). For a camera that sits just above entry-level, it&rsquo;s incredibly impressive, and useful too: it&rsquo;ll help you properly capture moments you might otherwise have missed.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony A5100 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor: </strong>24.3MP Exmor APS-C CMOS</p> <p><strong>Lens mount:</strong> Sony E-mount</p> <p><strong>ISO range:</strong> 100-25600</p> <p><strong>Continuous stills shooting:</strong> 6fps</p> <p><strong>Flash:</strong> built-in pop-up</p> <p><strong>Video capture:</strong> Up to 1080p at 60fps in AVCHD 2.0/MP4/XAVC S formats</p> <p><strong>Screen:</strong> 180-degree tilting 3in LCD with 921,600 dots</p> <p><strong>Connectivity:</strong> NFC, Wi-Fi, USB, micro HDMI

Its large size helps it capture more light in short shutter speeds, which makes it a good performer in lower light situations (although there&rsquo;s also a pop-up flash should you need it).</p> <p>Sony&rsquo;s BIONZ X processor also aids noise reduction, and you can push the ISO sensitivity up a long way before noise starts to become an issue. The ISO range is impressively wide for a cheaper system camera (100-25600), and shots taken at 3200 and below are relatively noise-free. When using a fast or image stabilisation-equipped lens, you can shoot handheld in truly murky conditions and still end up with usable results.</p> <p>In good light, though, the A5100 truly excels. We mainly used the 16-50mm kit lens, and found that on a sunny day this combination turned out shots with superb detail, contrast, colour reproduction and, in the right conditions, good bokeh and a narrow depth-of-field. As with most Sony cameras, it also has the ability to create lovely HDR exposures with both bright and dark areas of the image nicely exposed.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&rsquo;s Guide to Photography: What is bokeh &ndash; and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="1800" title="Sony A5100 sample shot (with 16-50mm zoom lens)" alt="Sony A5100 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sample-trees.jpg?1412948222" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A5100 review" alt="Sony A5100 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sample-churchill-theatre.jpg?1412948222" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A5100 review" alt="Sony A5100 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sample-spider.jpg?1412948222" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A5100 review" alt="Sony A5100 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sample-war-mem.jpg?1412948222" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Video quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Impressively, the A5100 can shoot in three different video formats: AVCHD 2.0, MP4 and XAVC S. Like a DSLR, it has a chunky handgrip, designed to give you a firm hold even if there&rsquo;s a lens heavier than a large bag of sugar screwed on.</p> <p>Construction is top-notch too. The NX1 body is made of magnesium alloy, giving you strength without masses and masses of weight. It still weighs 550g without a lens, but that&rsquo;s actually not too bad when you consider its size. While a CSC, it&rsquo;s a chunky little guy. A substantial grip is vital in a camera like this &ndash; we think Samsung has got the design right this time.</p> <p>Weather proofing means you don&rsquo;t have to play nice with the NX1 either. It&rsquo;s designed to keep dust out and is splash resistant. Don&rsquo;t drop it in water, but feel free to use it in the rain.</p> <p>The camera also offers supremely good manual control. For those who want to pretend Auto mode has never been invented, there can&rsquo;t be many better system cameras out there. As well as having the control dials needed to let you fiddle with settings without digging through menus, there&rsquo;s a monochrome LCD display on the top plate that tells you exactly what settings the camera is currently using. Only top-end cameras have these &ndash; and it&rsquo;s the first time we&rsquo;ve seen one on a CSC.</p> <p>It may look nerdy, but going the extra mile on features is what the Samsung NX1 is all about. There&rsquo;s even a lock on the mode dial &ndash;&nbsp;seems like a small addition, but a dial that&rsquo;s too easy to flick over can be monumentally annoying.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nikon/nikon-d810/review">Nikon D810 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The LCD plate keeps you informed of settings" alt="The LCD plate keeps you informed of settings" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-3.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="There&#039;s a tough, weatherproof build" alt="There&#039;s a tough, weatherproof build" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-6.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> My Plug in Baby </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It almost has the same connectivity power as a smartphone too. As well as NFC and Wi-Fi, the Samsung NX1 has Bluetooth. Given how much of a pain most cameras make transferring photos over Wi-Fi, this is a great idea. Bluetooth is a bit slower than Wi-Fi, but it isn&rsquo;t half simpler for transferring just the odd photo.</p> <p>The NX1 also offers good tools for composing your photos. There&rsquo;s a Super AMOLED 3-inch screen on the back made up of 1,036k dots and a rather good XGA-red OLED EVF. Like so many of Samsung&rsquo;s phones, the NX1 is positively OLED obsessed. OLED screens offer superb contrast, but the EVF&rsquo;s colours did seem a bit over saturated when we tried the camera out. Fingers crossed we&rsquo;ll be able to tweak this in the final model.</p> <p>EVFs still aren&rsquo;t at the level of optical viewfinders in image quality terms, but as far as EVFs go, this one is very good. It&rsquo;s a great size, making it much more enjoyable to use than the postage stamp-size EVFs of old.</p> <p>The Samsung NX1 really embraces new tech, and you see this in its core hardware as well as some of the frilly bits around the edges. Two of the most important bits to mention are its video skills and the sensor.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android-44-kitkat/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom/review">Samsung Galaxy K Zoom review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="There&#039;s a nice, sharp AMOLED screen on the NX1&#039;s backside" alt="There&#039;s a nice, sharp AMOLED screen on the NX1&#039;s backside" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-7.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 4K wrinkle-finder </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Clearly aiming to take some shine off the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/panasonic-lumix-gh4/review">Panasonic GH4</a>, whose fab 4K video capture has made it a hit with amateur Spielbergs, the Samsung NX1 offers video capture in both UHD and 4K standards (contrary to popular belief, the two are actually different).</p> <p>Samsung is also keen to big-up that the camera&rsquo;s phase detection autofocus will make the picture a bit more stable when refocusing, and that you can send the uncompressed video feed directly to an external recorder over HDMI. This should come in handy for the more serious video freaks out there &ndash;&nbsp;4K video eats away gigabytes of data in no time.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/panasonic-lumix-gh4/review">Panasonic Lumix GH4 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="4K video? The Samsung NX1 has a 28-megapixel APS-C sensor, but unlike the other NX-series camera, it&rsquo;s a BSI sensor. This tech is used in phones to provide better low-light performance in the sort of teeny-tiny sensors you get in most mobile phones, but what will it do in a big APS-C one? We don&rsquo;t know yet, but it&rsquo;s one of the most exciting things about the Samsung NX1 for the photo purists out there. As long as Samsung hasn&rsquo;t overdone the noise reduction, we could be in for a real treat.</p> <p>Elsewhere, the Samsung NX1 has a new DRIMe V imaging engine that offers new noise reduction algorithms that &ndash; according to Samsung &ndash; are better at telling between fine detail and noise. There&rsquo;s no low-pass filter, either, which should make photos all the sharper.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s more to the Samsung NX1 brain than low-light skills though. You can shoot at up to 15fps at full resolution, with autofocus. That&rsquo;s very fast indeed &ndash; using burst mode fires out a noise that sounds like a tiny machine gun (even if there are no DSLR internals to actually make that noise). ISO range is great, going from 100 all the way up to 25,600, with an extended 51,200 mode available for emergencies. And there&rsquo;s even a separate green AF assist light for when the lights go really low.</p> <p>When light conditions are better, the Samsung NX1 is blazingly fast too. It uses a hybrid phase and contrast detection autofocus system, and virtually the whole sensor is covered by phase detection points too. There are 205 phase detection points, including 153 even more accurate cross-type ones. For a compact system camera, this is jaw-to-the-floor stuff.</p> <p>Samsung says the autofocus takes just 55ms, and it seemed pretty quick to us. But we&rsquo;ll see whether it can cope past midnight without a night light to keep it company when we get on to the full review.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-qx1/review">Sony QX1 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="That purply flash of colour is the APS-C sensor" alt="That purply flash of colour is the APS-C sensor" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-10.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A mode for every occasion… literally </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course, this wouldn&rsquo;t be a Samsung device without a silly-sounding extra or two. And that&rsquo;s it for now. It&rsquo;s a work-in-progress.</p> <p>It sounds a bit silly, but the tech that goes into it is quite interesting. Performance, image quality and control are what matters here.</p> <p>The control and performance seem to be on the money in the Samsung NX1, but will the image quality live up to those high standards? We&rsquo;ll have to wait and see. Most of the other upgrades including the electronic shutter will soon be on all X-T1s with a firmware update though, so the only reason to get this would be for the new finish.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/fujifilm/fujifilm-x-t1/review">Fujifilm X-T1 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4896" height="3264" title="Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition " alt="Photokina 2014: 5 cameras we wanted to bring home" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF3319.JPG?1411395168" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4896" height="3264" title="Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition " alt="Photokina 2014: 5 cameras we wanted to bring home" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF3322.JPG?1411395168" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Fujifilm X100T </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">As for the X100T, it&rsquo;s a nice evolution of last year&rsquo;s X100S, upgrading the advanced hybrid viewfinder with a new graphic interface. Even without a lens attached, it&rsquo;s a weighty thing (for its size) with lots of metal in the body. A wrist strap comes in the box, and we suggest you use it &ndash; because if you drop the QX1, it&rsquo;ll hit the ground hard. The exterior is made from thick matte-finished plastic and feels tough enough to withstand everyday use.</p> <p>A door at the back pops open to reveal a lithium-ion battery, chargeable via USB, plus a microSD slot. You don&rsquo;t need a microSD card inside to shoot stills with the QX1 (smaller preview images will be stored into your phone&rsquo;s memory) but you will need one if you want to shoot at the highest quality or if you want to capture video.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s a tripod mount at the bottom of the QX1 and &ndash; a first on the QX range &ndash; a pop-up flash on top. There&rsquo;s also a shutter release button on the left side (half-pressing this will trigger the autofocus), while on the right a display gives you three pieces of info at a glance: remaining battery power; the presence (or not) of a microSD card; and whether or not Wi-Fi is switched on.</p> <p>Supplied in the box is a phone mount that clips your smartphone (tablets will be too large) to the back of the QX1. This can be replaced by a hand grip and/or a tilt mount which are sold separately as a package.</p> <p>Then there&rsquo;s the lens mount. The QX1 supports lenses made for Sony&rsquo;s E-mount system (of which there are plenty), and by attaching an official Sony adapter you can also use A-mount lenses (of which there are a whole lot more) with autofocus. Third-party adapters will allow lenses from Leica, Nikon, Canon and more to be attached, at the cost of autofocus.</p> <p>It&#39;s worth noting here that &pound;250 gets you the QX1 with lens mount but when adding a lens, you&#39;re looking at more like &pound;400 to get started. Unless you already have a stock of Sony glass at home.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="It looks mighty weird, but it&#039;s lighter and smaller than a DSLR" alt="It looks mighty weird, but it&#039;s lighter and smaller than a DSLR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-qx1-in-hand_0.jpg?1411322529" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Awkward to hold, easy to set up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>To use the QX1, you&rsquo;ll need to install Sony&rsquo;s PlayMemories Mobile app on your smartphone &ndash; and at present that&rsquo;s available on Android and iOS. You then connect the QX1 and phone via Wi-Fi Direct (incredibly easy if you&rsquo;ve got an NFC-equipped phone and a bit of a faff if you haven&rsquo;t), open up the app and you&rsquo;re ready to shoot.</p> <p>Photos and videos can be taken either by tapping the on-screen button (you can also set your focus point by tapping a section of the screen) or pushing the physical shutter release button. Half-pressing the latter will engage autofocus.</p> <p>If there&rsquo;s an immediately evident problem with the QX1, it&rsquo;s that it&rsquo;s quite awkward to take photos with it. We often found that we were neither comfortable using the physical button nor the screen to take a shot, and that a lot of our photos came out slightly wonky even though we&rsquo;d felt like we were framing them dead-on. Perhaps that&rsquo;s just a consequence of using a new type of camera that&rsquo;s held in a different way to existing DSLRs and compacts, and perhaps it&rsquo;s something we&rsquo;ll get used to &ndash; but we can&rsquo;t deny that there&rsquo;s an issue there, minor as it may sound.</p> <p>The PlayMemories Mobile app allows a large degree of control when taking photos. You can shoot in Aperture, Shutter or Program priority modes if you want to change settings significantly, or switch to one of the two automatic modes: Intelligent Auto for everyday shots; and Superior Auto for more dimly lit scenes.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The supplied phone mount will hold most smartphones securely" alt="The supplied phone mount will hold most smartphones securely" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-qx1-rear-view_0.jpg?1411322529" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Our QX1 with an A-mount adapter and Sony 70-300mm G lens" alt="Our QX1 with an A-mount adapter and Sony 70-300mm G lens" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-qx1-on-tripod.jpg?1411322529" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Photo quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Here&rsquo;s where the QX1 really excels: it&rsquo;s essentially a 20.1MP DSLR that&rsquo;s the size of a DSLR lens. With a large APS-C Exmor sensor and the ability to use high quality lenses, it happily takes photographs that no smartphone camera could dream of capturing.</p> <p>We mostly used it with Sony&rsquo;s 16-50mm E-mount power zoom, a compact lens which comes with optical image stabilisation. It&rsquo;s a good all-rounder and the photos above were all taken using it &ndash; but we were far more excited once we&rsquo;d bolted on Sony&rsquo;s LA-EA4 adapter, which allowed us to use our larger A-mount lenses.</p> <p>This meant we could take extremely detailed close-ups of spiders using a 90mm macro lens or snap far-off birds using a 70-300mm zoom. You lose optical image stabilisation here, which means you either need to shoot in good light or possess a very steady hand (or tripod), but the results we got were DSLR-quality and on our phone in moments &ndash; ready to share straight away to Instagram or Facebook, or send to a friend via MMS.</p> <p>If you&rsquo;ve slotted a microSD card into the QX1, a full-resolution 20.1MP image will be stored on there &ndash; handy if you want to print or blow up shots or shoot in RAW mode for maximum post-processing potential &ndash; but the smaller (5MP and around 500k in size) photos that are stored straight away on your phone are of more than sufficient quality for most purposes.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="1803" title="Sony QX1 sample (with 16-50mm lens)" alt="Sony QX1 sample (with 16-50mm lens)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/st-martin-in-the-fields.jpg?1411322529" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="799" title="Sony QX1 sample (with 16-50mm lens)" alt="Sony QX1 sample (with 16-50mm lens)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/hayward.jpg?1411322529" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="799" title="Sony QX1 sample (with 16-50mm lens)" alt="Sony QX1 sample (with 16-50mm lens)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/betjemen.jpg?1411322529" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="802" title="Sony QX1 sample (with 90mm A-mount macro lens)" alt="Sony QX1 sample (with 90mm A-mount macro lens)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-qx1-spider.jpg?1411322529" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony QX1 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sensor: 20.1MP Exmor APS-C CMOS</p> <p>ISO range: 100-16000</p> <p>Video: MP4 1920 x 1080 at 30fps</p> <p>Wi-Fi and NFC: Yes</p> <p>Weight: 216g</p> <p>Dimensions: 74 x 69.5 x 52.5mm</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Video quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You&rsquo;ll also need a microSD card in the camera if you want to record HD video. After all, you can buy a standalone Sony A5000 E-mount camera, which has the same sensor, 16-50mm lens and NFC/Wi-Fi combination for only a few pounds more.</p> <p>That said, we&rsquo;ve had a lot of fun with the QX1 due to its small size and the ease with which it pairs with our NFC Android phone. The fact that you can instantly share photos taken with it using any number of smartphone apps may be a novelty, but it&rsquo;s not wearing off for us after a couple of weeks.</p> <p><strong>READ They look extremely similar - they&#39;re large DSLRs, but not ones with the gigantic battery that makes cameras such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nikon-d4s/review">Nikon D4S</a> look like they&#39;ve been chomping down on steroids.</p> <p>What&#39;s new in the design? Nikon has altered the grips for your right hand on the back and front a bit, making them more pronounced.</p> <p>You&#39;d need to know this, or own a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/d800/nikon-reveals-363mp-d800-dslr/news">D800</a>, to notice, but either way the Nikon D810 offers grip firmer than the handshake of a 5ft army general with short man syndrome. It is worth noting quite how large the camera is if you&#39;re upgrading from a compact system camera or lower-end DSLR, though.</p> <p>On its own the D810 weighs 980g with battery. We tested the camera with the excellent 24-70mm f2.8 lens, which weighs about the same again. It&#39;s a hefty package, and we imagine many people eyeing-up this camera may be considering a real high-performance lens like this. However, even with the cheap, light and cheerful 50mm f1.8, you&#39;re still looking at a bulk of over a kilogram. That&#39;s as much as some laptops.</p> <p>It&#39;s also the sort of size that fills rucksacks, especially if you&#39;re going to carry around a lens or two. However, as you&#39;d hope, manual control is fantastic as a pay-off. There&#39;s a wealth of control dials and customisable function modes, and the current settings are all telegraphed with fantastic clarity through the top monochrome LCD and the optical viewfinder&#39;s OLED overlay.</p> <p>The manual control dials all have the sort of reassuring clunky thunk that fits in perfectly with the lovely shutter sound and feel that you only really get with a real DSLR.</p> <p>Build quality is fantastic, too. Aside from some plastic or rubber outer parts, the frame of the Nikon D810 is made of magnesium alloy, and it feels tough as nails. This should also help quiet any people complaining about the weight of the camera. Magnesium is harder and lighter than aluminium (although this is a magnesium-aluminium alloy).</p> <p>Get this in your hands and you know instantly: this is the real deal. And it&#39;s weatherproof, too, perfect for shooting on rainy days, as long as the lens you use is also going to be safe.</p> <p>Of course, all this applied to the Nikon D800E, and Nikon hasn&#39;t been silly enough to release a new camera without any improvements. One of the first you may notice is the new screen.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/olympus/olympus-om-d-e-m1/review">Olympus OM-D EM-1 reviewed&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A rucksack filler " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d820-4.jpg?1414480516" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="And all-round hefty package " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-10.jpg?1414480516" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hand me the white LED </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The 3.2-inch display on the back is the same size as 2012&#39;s models, but resolution has been increased from 921k dots to 1229k. Rather than a traditional increase in sharpness, Nikon has bunged an extra white subpixel into the usual red-green-blue sub pixel array.</p> <p>What this means, for the non-screen-nerds out there, is that the D810 can dramatically increase the brightness of the rear display without using loads of extra juice - white pixels are perfect for doing this. Taking a further step back, this means the rear screen can offer great outdoors visibility even on sunny days without ruining the simply excellent 1,200 shot battery life.</p> <p>While we tried the Nikon D810 out in Margate rather than Miami (yes, really), where the sun wasn&#39;t exactly dazzling, it is impressive stuff regardless. Of course, most of you will want to peer through the viewfinder 99 per cent of the time anyway. That&#39;s especially as the optical viewfinder offers a crystal clear view with an excellent read-out of what your camera&#39;s up to, settings-wise.</p> <p>The viewfinder is great, but some might say the lack of an EVF is an oversight. These sorts of impersonation viewfinders generally look a lot worse than pure optical viewfinders like the Nikon D810&#39;s but they allow things like focus peaking as they&#39;re totally digital.</p> <p>Focus peaking is where the crispy bits around in-focus objects are highlighted to make manual focusing easier but it&#39;s missing from the D810, even when the rear display is used to compose a photo. When going fully manual, you have to focus by eye a good deal more than we&#39;d like.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The viewfinder&#039;s a bit of a pretender " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-13.jpg?1414480516" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Not quite features galore </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There are also several other features missing from the Nikon D810 that are present in loads of cameras, including ones several orders of magnitude cheaper. You don&#39;t get Wi-Fi or 4K video recording. The former is just a niggle given how poorly Wi-Fi is normally implemented in cameras, but the lack of 4K video is a real bummer.</p> <p>The Panasonic GH4 has become a real hero among video fans because of its good 4K video capture, and not having it here is a huge missed opportunity. This camera&#39;s arch rival the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon/canon-unleashes-eos-5d-mark-iii/news">Canon 5D MKIII</a> doesn&#39;t have 4K video either, but then that&#39;s two years old just like the Nikon D810&#39;s predecessors.</p> <p>Predecessors? Yep, there are two cameras that the D810 is replacing: the Nikon D800 and 800E. One has an anti-aliasing filter (the non-E model), one doesn&#39;t. Like several other recent high-end cameras, the Nikon D810 ditches the anti-aliasing filter altogether and that&#39;s actually a good thing.&nbsp;It sounds like a positive feature, and does have its uses, but it&#39;s a compromise as the filter reduces sharpness ever-so-slightly.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Nikon D810 takes both CF and SD cards, with two slots hidden under a flap. If you&#39;re going to shoot in NEF (Nikon&#39;s version of RAW), you&#39;ll want a massive memory card too, as photos can reach close to 80MB. Each. Even fine quality JPGs are 20MB or so.&nbsp;</p> <p>Such massive amounts of data is what makes the USB 3.0 port on the side pretty handy. It&#39;s not going to cause as much fuss as (missing) 4K video, but if you have a recent laptop it&#39;ll speed-up transfers without you having to take out the card.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/panasonic-lumix-gh4/review">Panasonic GH4 4K camera tested&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The D810 is missing a few features " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-14.jpg?1414480516" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nikon D810 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sensor: 36.3MP, Full Frame, CMOS<br />Lens: F Mount<br />ISO: 64-12,800 native range<br />Flash: yes<br />Video: 1080p/60fps<br />Connectivity: miniHDMI, external mic socket, microUSB 3.0<br />Storage: SD, SDHC, SDXC, Compact Flash<br />Dimensions: 146 x 123 x 81.5mm<br />Weight: 980g (880g without battery) </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Star-grade papping </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>And as you&#39;d hope, image quality is otherwise absolutely fantastic. Despite having the same size and resolution sensor as the older Nikon D800E, the D810 actually has a new sensor and it&#39;s one that can render absolutely loads of detail with a nice, sharp lens.</p> <p>The Nikon D810 provides really quite superb dynamic range too, meaning you get detail in bright clouds that might be overexposed in lesser cameras, for beautiful sunsets without using an HDR mode.</p> <p>There is an inbuilt HDR mode in the D810, but we honestly found it too slow to use handheld. Unless you use a tripod, you&#39;ll find clear ghosting - something smartphones use clever programming to avoid. &nbsp;</p> <p>Photos aren&#39;t going to be in a completely different league to the D800E, and we&#39;re not entirely sure it&#39;s worth the upgrade if you already own the older camera and don&#39;t make a living off your photos. Compared to cameras a little lower down the price/size scale, though, it&#39;s hard not to let your jaw drop.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Jaw-dropping photos .. with a lens attached, that is " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-4.jpg?1414480516" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1900" height="1268" title="Lots of detail with a decent lens " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d910-s-2.jpg?1414480516" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Night Vision </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The real benefit of a great full-frame camera is that you can dig deep into the higher ISO sensitivities without your photos looking like grainy garbage. And that means you can shoot in virtually any lighting condition, generally without needing a tripod for stability. As long as you don&#39;t need real pro-quality shots, that is.</p> <p>As long as you know what settings not to use, it doesn&#39;t half make shooting fairly decent shots easy.&nbsp;ISO sensitivity goes from 64 all the way up to 12,800, an absolutely huge native range that can be expanded to 32 - 51,200. Obviously, you won&#39;t want to get anywhere near the top end if you want to avoid noisy photos, but with the Nikon D810 you can push the ISO setting far more than you can with an APS-C or smaller sensor camera. Like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/olympus/olympus-om-d-e-m1/review">Olympus OM-D EM-1</a>, much as we love it.</p> <p>Focusing is lightning fast, and there are 51 focus points, 15 of which are cross-focus. These cross points use a team of two phase detection sensors, analysing light horizontally and vertically for even better focusing reliability.</p> <p>The Nikon D810 is very impressive on this front, although looking at the numbers the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon/canon-unleashes-eos-5d-mark-iii/news">Canon 5D MKIII </a>does get you even more, with 61 points, 41 of which are cross-type points. Of course, phase detection only applies when you&#39;re using the viewfinder. Switch to Live View, which uses the rear screen as the preview window, and the D810 switches to slower contrast detection.</p> <p>Rather like the somewhat-unfriendly approach to HDR, the D810 doesn&#39;t have in-body image stabilisation. So while you can up the ISO to allow faster shutter speeds without huge underexposure, you can&#39;t indulge in slightly slower shutter speeds handheld unless you&#39;re using a lens with OIS.</p> <p>The D810&#39;s Expeed 4 processor lets you shoot at 5fps at full 36.3-megapixel resolution. That&#39;s a full frame per second more than the D800E. Of course, if you want remotely fast burst shooting you will want to invest in a super-fast card.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Plenty of light sensitivity to push " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-12.jpg?1414480516" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="Focus is lightning fast " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/d810-s-6.jpg?1414480516" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="2300" height="1347" title="With these big file sizes, cropping becomes useful " alt="Nikon D810 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/D810-crop-1_0.jpg?1414480516" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nikon D810 Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nikon D810 is a monster camera. Despite having a new sensor and screen, the experience and results are not all that different from what&#39;s on offer in the Nikon D800E. And you don&#39;t get features you might be expecting, such as 4K video and built-in Wi-Fi.</p> <p>Do they matter? That depends on you.
