Perhaps Google has no gaming plans for Chromecast, but that would be a shame given that Amazon&#39;s rumoured to be working on a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/amazon-set-top-box-tiny-chromecast-and-offering-game-streaming/news">gaming-ready dongle</a> and the fact that Apple TV supports just such a feature via Airplay.</p> <p>Back to the here and now and we found that video streamed in HD very smoothly on our fairly &quot;normal&quot; 16Mbps broadband connection, but those still making do with just a couple of megs should expect Netflix&#39;s adaptive streams to deliver softer, lower-res videos, while ambitiously selecting 1080p from YouTube will necessitate a fair bit of buffering if you want an uninterrupted video.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> UPDATE: BBC iPlayer is Ready To Cast </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Google knows the way to British hearts. Casting BBC iPlayer is now just as simple as doing so with Netflix and YouTube. With smartphones and tablets on your home network, it&#39;s just a case of making sure the iPlayer app is up to date before hitting the new in-app Cast button.</p> <p>BBC iPlayer on desktop hasn&#39;t been treated to a Cast button just yet, but if you&#39;re happy to settle for lower quality streams, you can as ever cast a tab from Chrome. Stick to Casting from mobile devices and streams max out at 720p, which makes for a perfectly crisp picture - as with Netflix, iPlayer automatically adjusts the quality depending on the connection but as long as you&#39;ve got fairly solid broadband you should be up to 720p very shortly after starting the stream.</p> <p>As with any Chromecast-friendly app, you can still navigate around your smartphone or tablet as <em>The Great British Sewing Bee</em> is playing on your TV screen.</p> <p>There&#39;s no support for BBC Radio or BBC Sport just yet, but we&#39;re sure both are just a matter of time. But that won&#39;t stop &#39;Casters getting excited at the prospect of ten - yes ten! - new apps. There&#39;s no update to the Chromecast itself, just download the compatible apps and look for the Chromecast symbol at the top. Just keep your expectation in check - these are not the apps you&#39;re looking for.</p> <p>In the first batch of Google dongle-friendly apps comes Plex, Avia and RealPlayer Cloud, all hell bent on becoming your go-to media server and cloud storage buddy. But RealPlayer Cloud, for Android, iOS, Kindle Fire and desktop, isn&#39;t available outside the US yet (we pre-registered for updates here in the UK) and the popular but sometimes messy Plex requires a US$3.99 per month PlexPass.</p> <p>That&#39;s not a huge amount but considering the Chromecast itself is only &pound;30 and everything else is free (bar the Netflix sub), it seems unncessary. Plex is rolling out Chromecast compatibility to free users in the near future, but for now we&#39;d give <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.videon.android.mediaplayer&amp;hl=en">Avia Media Player</a> a go. It&#39;s far from perfect itself and enabling Chromecast compatibility requires a one-off payment of &pound;1.86 (US$2.99), but it does the job.</p> <p>If you can forgive connection and buffering stutters, you can now play your own local videos plus media dragged in from Dropbox, Facebook and Picasa. Videos have a video reel icon rather than a thumbnail, which is very annoying if you shoot a lot of untitled smartphone footage, but making playlists is easy and it&#39;ll do until Google introduces a better integrated alternative.</p> <p>Still, there&#39;s nothing here to rival <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/roku/roku-takes-google-chromecast-streaming-stick/news">Roku&#39;s incoming &pound;50 Streaming Stick</a>, which promises easy playback of locally stored videos on smartphones and tablets with the Roku app.</p> <p>Elsewhere in the new Chromecast apps are VEVO for ad-laden music videos, Red Bull TV for skateboarding and motorsports, PostTV for news footage from The Washington Post and the confusing but useful BeyondPod Podcast Manager for blasting out Brian Cox in audio-only form. There&#39;s also the international video app Viki for fans of Korean or Venezuelan TV, and playlist app Songza, which had dropped off the Google Play store at the time of writing but will probably be back on soon.</p> <p>So the best Chromecast apps are still the ones that have been there all along - Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies. Here&#39;s hoping this is the first wave in Google&#39;s long game to catch up to the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/opinion-every-apple-fan-should-own-apple-tv/feature">&pound;99 Apple TV</a>, which still has the upper hand in terms of simple AirPlay mirroring as well as extra apps such as Sky News and Vimeo.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="New Chromecast apps - Avia Media Player (left) and Red Bull. You can&rsquo;t see an on-screen pointer, so there&rsquo;s no way to use your TV as a proper monitor, and while embedded videos (from Vimeo, say) work, they do so with stuttering playback and choppy sound.</p> <p>As a little bonus feature, it&rsquo;s fine, but it really needs to be viewed as such, at least until Google can perfect it and bring it out of beta. If you have an Apple TV, PS3, Xbox 360, smart TV or smart set-top box, chances are the Chromecast just isn&rsquo;t necessary, because these are all able to get YouTube, Netflix and more onto your telly already (and they don&rsquo;t require a companion device to do so).</p> <p>The addition of more essential apps (rather than filler we&#39;ve never heard of) and a more robust web-casting experience could make Chromecast a far more appealing prospect for tech-heads in the future, though. Plex, Avia and RealPlayer Cloud fill a gap but we hope Google is working on its own AirPlay-rivalling solution for mirroring locally stored videos and photos. Yes, we&rsquo;re talking about the same OnLive service that totally failed as a business and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/facebook/fully-charged-onlive-returns-new-form-ee-supercharging-londoners-4g-and-transformers-4-gets">had to pivot to an entirely different form of functionality</a> in order to survive.</p> <p>Amazon&rsquo;s box, say the sources, will offer &ldquo;top tier&rdquo; titles streamed from remote servers (i.e. not from a box in your house) and rendered at 30fps. That&rsquo;s pretty much what OnLive offered before succumbing to the costs of running the huge quantities of servers required. Amazon, of course, has plenty more money and could absorb a greater cost while getting its game streaming service established.</p> <p>While such a system would likely cost Amazon a lot of cash, it could be a valuable loss leader as it&rsquo;d be something no other set-top box (such as the Apple TV, Roku and Chromecast) can offer. So we can definitely believe that it&rsquo;s a possibility. OK, so many of the movies in it are either (a) tempting but cost money or (b) free but bloody awful, but delve deep enough and you&rsquo;ll unearth the occasional gem: stuff like <em>Night of the Living Dead</em> (see above), <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkYT2_GoV20">His Girl Friday</a></em>, <em><a href="http://youtu.be/6FZRjLPtPLM">Enduring Love</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEaxG7HBK5c">Shopgirl</a></em>.</p> <p>These films are often old, it&rsquo;s true, and some of them have foreign subtitles, but crucially they&rsquo;re free. So no looking that gift horse in the mouth, eh?</p> <p>Another option is <a href="http://www.crackle.com/">Crackle</a>, a service owned by Sony that offers free movies and TV shows to watch through mobile devices, computers, consoles and smart TVs. The selection is a bit more exciting than YouTube&rsquo;s, although you&rsquo;ll have to periodically sit through ads (much like watching a film on TV). At the time of writing Crackle&rsquo;s free films include <em>American Psycho</em>, <em>The Squid and the Whale</em> and <em>Requiem for a Dream</em> and its TV shows include <em>Seinfeld</em> and <em>The Shield</em>.</p> <p>Open Culture has a <a href="http://www.openculture.com/freemoviesonline">raft of links to free online movies</a> arranged by genre. They&rsquo;re almost all pre-1970, although there are a handful of more recent shorts and documentaries. Some highlights include Kurosawa&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.openculture.com/2012/11/watch_kurosawas_irashomoni_free_online_the_film_that_introduced_japanese_cinema_to_the_west.html"><em>Rashomon</em></a> and Tarkovsky&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PAhbcy8mP4"><em>Andrei Rublev</em></a>, so it&rsquo;s fair to say it might suit cinephiles more than casual viewers. It also includes links to other free movie sites (scroll down the foot of the page).</p> <p>One other alternative? If you&rsquo;re not already a Netflix or Lovefilm Instant subscriber (and haven&rsquo;t been in the past), you can trial both services for a month for free. Plenty to watch there &ndash; although you&rsquo;ll be charged for your second month if you forget to cancel before the trial is over.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/25-fantastic-free-android-games/feature">25 fantastic free android games</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-_f2Enn8x5s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Free Books </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The abundance of out of copyright books means you&rsquo;ll never be short of free stuff to download to your ebook reader or tablet.</p> <p>Open Culture has a <a href="http://www.openculture.com/free_ebooks">nice list of free ebooks</a> with links to book iOS and Kindle-friendly versions of written works such as Dostoevsky&rsquo;s <em>Crime and Punishment</em>, Conan Doyle&rsquo;s <em>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</em>, Fitzgerald&rsquo;s <em>The Great Gatsby</em>, Melville&rsquo;s <em>Moby Dick</em> and pretty much everything Shakespeare ever put his quill to. In their place: a scant four mini-series starring the Daleks. Yup, Netflix had managed what the Daleks never could – it had exterminated the Doctor.</p> <p>“If you think that’s bad,” someone later remarked on Twitter, “I was three series into Lost when that was pulled.”</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> &#039;Fluid&#039; service </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What I and my suddenly Lost-limited friend had discovered is that Netflix isn’t entirely what people assume it to be. Pundits enthuse about it being a replacement for your collection of shiny discs (or, in the UK, discs mostly found in bargain bins). In reality, Netflix only resembles a DVD and Blu-ray collection if said collection semi-randomly has items vanish without warning, and relatively new ones sporadically appear. For Netflix’s part, it’s always — albeit quietly — said it’s a ‘fluid’ service, updating and rotating rather than purely adding to its selection.</p> <p>Anyone who’s been around for long enough should have seen this coming. Depending on your age, you will have lived through many media formats, which have increasingly rapidly evolved towards a present (and future) that fully embraces convenience at the expense of ownership and permanence. I started out with vinyl but then spent several unhappy years battling cassette tapes, the worst possible medium for storage (and now bafflingly part of a retro resurgence, presumably championed by people with rose-tinted specs glued to their faces).</p> <p>Next came CDs and DVDs, effortlessly providing almost instant access to any track or show on a disc. And then the fully digital revolution: piracy led the way, before Steve Jobs and the Cupertino gang cleaned up the centre of town, iTunes flanked by Amazon and a handful of other giants intent on kicking to death illegal download sites and, for an encore, a big chunk of the high street.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Netflix: a ‘fluid’ service, apparently." alt="Netflix" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/netflix.jpg?1380291227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Doctor Who: Exterminated by Netflix" alt="Doctor Who" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/doctor-who-netflix.jpg?1380291227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Contract killers </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sooner or later, someone smart figured out that if you can download a single track from iTunes, people would surely prefer immediate access to pretty much anything remotely related — for a fee. Boom: the streaming-services tipping point, where we find ourselves today. Spotify. Netflix. More than you could ever consume in a lifetime, for less than a new album and film every month, but with no guarantee your favourite content will even be there a month from now.</p> <p>It’s perhaps in the nature of big business to screw things up through contracts, licensing and disagreements. Because you no longer own anything, collections shift and change not according to your own tastes, but due to the whims of executives obsessing about archaic exclusive contracts rather than making content accessible and affordable to all.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Halfway house iTunes provides ownership — for a given value of ownership. Perhaps people eventually won’t care if a show they’ve been watching vanishes — if a selection is big enough, there’s always something else to play. But when the concept of ownership is no longer relevant — when everything is in the cloud and not on your shelves or even your hard drive — there’s potential for content to be lost, to slip between the cracks, and for companies to dictate availability based on popularity rather than merit.</p> <p>In years to come, maybe historians and even consumers will once again be thankful for the counter-culture, the ‘pirates’ who rip, store and share. They saved countless pieces of music, television and video games from oblivion’s maw, and might do so again. In the meantime, while the lure of streaming and cloud-based digital content remains strong, have a think about those songs and shows you love experiencing over and over. While there’s time, it might be wise to make them truly yours by investing in some physical items once again, even if the shelves you browse are inevitably increasingly virtual in nature.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Breaking Bad: How long is it going to be on Netflix for?" alt="Breaking Bad" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/breaking-bad.jpg?1380291227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/netflix-and-spotify-cannot-replace-your-shiny-discs/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/netflix-and-spotify-cannot-replace-your-shiny-discs/feature#comments Film and TV Netflix Streaming Fri, 27 Sep 2013 14:13:49 +0000 Stephen Graves 1427168 at http://www.stuff.tv Netflix snags first Emmy for online-only TV drama http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/netflix-snags-first-emmy-online-only-tv-drama/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Award win for House of Cards marks first for online streaming services </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Netflix House of Cards" alt="Netflix House of Cards" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Kevin-Spacey-House-of-Cards-Netflix.jpg?1379932179" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Netflix has bagged three Emmy awards – including best directing – for its original series House of Cards.</p> <p>David Fincher's opening episode picked up the best directing award; the series also won creative arts Emmys for outstanding casting and outstanding cinematography, both awarded at a ceremony a day earlier.</p> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The new TV </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Netflix has already committed to producing <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/netflix-wants-release-five-new-shows-year/news">five original shows a year</a>, and shows no sign of slowing down – upcoming new series include Turbo F.A.S.T., &nbsp;Netflix's first children's show, and Sens8, a sci-fi series from Matrix directors the Wachowskis.</p> <p>Between Netflix's Emmy win and the buzz created around streaming episodes of Breaking Bad, it looks increasingly like online streaming has come of age.
