The design is gallery-worthy, finished with rounded aluminium corners, an all-glass back and minimalist details. But your hands might not like it &ndash; both the S5, One M8 and G3 are easier to hold than this 163g block, and picking up the Z2 from a desk can be awkward.</p> <p>It has Live Colour LED tech for punchy but accurate hues, and clear-sounding stereo speakers on the front of the phone. Our only niggle? The front is seriously reflective. For a smartphone camera, the Z2 can take incredible photos with its 1/2.3in, 20.7MP sensor and speedy autofocus.&nbsp;</p> <p>It also flies in use: it shares the same 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor as the S5 and One M8, but the Sony&rsquo;s 3GB of RAM bests its rivals. Small apps in overlaid windows lag occasionally, but it&rsquo;s still a great use of that 5.2in screen, and the Android skin is mostly clutter-free.</p> <p>With a bigger screen, there&rsquo;s a bigger 3200mAh battery, and the Z2 reliably lasts the day - with Stamina mode to conserve juice when the screen&rsquo;s off.</p> <p>Overall, this is the connoisseur&rsquo;s choice, capable of taking brilliant photos and playing cinephile video. It oozes quality but isn&rsquo;t the most practical choice. But if you have the time to show Sony some love, it will return it in large dollops.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z2/review">Sony Xperia Z2 - the full review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1889" height="1417" title="The Xperia Z2 makes almost no compromises" alt="Which smartphone? Although the Z2&rsquo;s a heavy smartphone, this isn&rsquo;t the problem - the HTC weighs just as much. The issue is more that the Z2&rsquo;s toughened glass build would work better scaled down. When you&rsquo;re dealing with a 5.2in diagonal span of glass, ergonomics count (we&rsquo;re hoping the Z2 Compact gets this right).</p> <p>Another smartphone best picked up and fondled before you decide, then. If its shape and minimalist design work for you, you can get back to appreciating everything the Sony does brilliantly. Such as being waterproof: with all the port flaps closed, the Z2 has the same IP55/IP58 water-resistance as the Z1. Plus, the headphone jack is now flap-free.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Screen: 9/10</strong><br />In almost every way the Z2&rsquo;s screen is a stunner. It displays fine detail better than both the S5 and the One M8, perfect for pressing your nose up against full HD movies. Viewing angles aren&rsquo;t the best but they&rsquo;re no longer a problem either.</p> <p><strong>Camera: 10/10</strong><br />The Superior Auto mode doesn&rsquo;t always produce the best images &ndash; it can struggle to expose correctly in sunlight and it doesn&rsquo;t have the night vision of the HTC. But chances are, Sony owners won&rsquo;t mind digging into the comprehensive settings.</p> <p>Here it shines: faces come out well in low light, scenes look punchy and the background de-focus mode is mesmerising. Both 1080p and 4K footage are smooth thanks to SteadyShot stabilisation, though autofocus jumps around while filming and, with the Snapdragon heating up, the Z2 can abruptly stop shooting in the higher resolution.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps: 9/10</strong><br />Sony&rsquo;s treatment of KitKat verges on bloatware, with pushy media services ruining the fun. For instance, an upward swipe to access Google Now also shows Sony&rsquo;s What&rsquo;s New app: a feature guaranteed to have zero fans.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/10-best-apps-sony-xperia-z2/feature">10 of the best apps for the Sony Xperia Z2</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/ultimate-setup-sony-xperia-z2/feature">The best cases, headphones and accessories for the Sony Xperia Z2</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="The Sony&#039;s ergonomics hold it back" alt="Which smartphone? M8 owners will find themselves checking emails too much, just to show it off.</p> <p>The 5in, 441ppi screen is super-sharp and considerably bigger than the One&rsquo;s 4.7in display &ndash; it&rsquo;s not a clear winner but colours look natural, text is smooth and viewing angles are fantastic.</p> <p>Has HTC fixed the One&rsquo;s niggles? Battery life is slightly better, bringing it on a par with its rivals &ndash; you shouldn&rsquo;t need the Ultra Power Saving Mode to last the day. But the UltraPixel camera stays.&nbsp;</p> <p>This might disappoint those looking to shoot serious images and footage, but for most, the low-light prowess and focusing tricks are good enough. Nothing else needed tweaking &ndash; in use, it&rsquo;s as fluid as we expect from an HTC and the feature set gets new tricks here and there, such as the ability to swipe straight into BlinkFeed even when the phone is off.</p> <p>It might not have the bragging rights of a 20.7MP camera, a removable battery or a heart-rate sensor, but for us, the extras on the S5 and Z2 simply don&rsquo;t compare to the pure gadget joy you get with the HTC One M8.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8) - the full review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The M8 looks every bit as nice as its predecessor" alt="Which smartphone? The bevelled edges catch the light where the S5&rsquo;s metal-look edges look cheap. While the G3 looks as metal as the M8, it can&rsquo;t match its premium weighty feel in the hands. If you want those machined lines, choose the Metal Grey variant.</p> <p><strong>Screen: 9/10</strong><br />The HTC might have the smallest screen here at 5in but it beats the mighty Sony on contrast and off-axis viewing. Compared to the original One, the palette leans to the green side&hellip; but only nerds will notice that.</p> <p><strong>Camera: 8/10</strong><br />More than a gimmick, the Duo camera lets you change the focus of pics after you&rsquo;ve taken them; and unlike on the Samsung and Sony, you don&rsquo;t need to select a mode before taking the shot. You can 3D-ify pics with Dimension Plus.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps: 10/10</strong><br />Still our Android skin of choice, Sense 6 will win over even fans of stock Android. Big screens, big specs, big tricks and, of course, big sales. But with a big handprint, &lsquo;modern glam&rsquo; back panel and poor size-to-screen ratio, it&rsquo;s still not beautiful.</p> <p>Features rule, with a swappable battery, microSD storage, the ability to run two apps side by side and even a heart-rate sensor round the back. It&rsquo;s not 2K but the 5.1in Super AMOLED screen is the best we&rsquo;ve seen on a Samsung phone. And it now matches the Samsung with a removable battery and microSD slot.</p> <p>It doesn&#39;t have the booming dual front-facing speakers on the One M8, but its rear 1W speaker is no slouch, and can almost match its HTC rival for loudness, if not bass.</p> <p>While it lacks the Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2&#39;s waterproof powers, its build is much improved, with a plastic, brushed-metal-look finish that will fool your eyes, if not your fingers.</p> <p>LG&#39;s redesigned its UI too, opting for less eye-searing colours and a more muted, subtle look.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">LG G3 - the full review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" title="The G3 in the background appears smaller, because it is further away" alt="Which smartphone? Pick it up, though, and its weight (or lack of it) can&#39;t fool your fingers. So it&#39;s no M8, but that doesn&#39;t mean it&#39;s not handsome in its own way.</p> <p><strong>Screen: 9/10 </strong><br />The G3 stands out from the crowd, with a 2560 x 1600 2K screen. That&#39;s an insane 538 ppi, though you won&#39;t notice any difference in sharpness in normal use. Look closely enough however, and it does throw up more details than its rivals. Its colours are excellent too - even more realistic than those on the M8 - although brightness, black levels and contrast let it down somewhat. Overall though, it&#39;s one of the best screens our eyes have had the pleasure of ogling.</p> <p><strong>Camera: 10/10</strong><br />The G3&#39;s 13MP camera is, put simply, fantastic. It&#39;s a jack of all trades, and nearly a master of every one. Well-lit shots are packed with crisp detail, and it even beats the light-guzzling M8 in most murky conditions. Its advanced optical image stabilisation, coupled with its laser-assisted autofocus, help keep subjects in focus - and at lightning-quick speeds, too.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps: 9/10</strong><br />LG has thankfully gone down the same fat-trimming path as Samsung. While its UI still isn&#39;t as minimalist as the Z2&#39;s, the garish icons are gone, replaced with flat, pastel-coloured icons.</p> <p>Much of the bloatware is gone too, and LG&#39;s done its best to simplify things. The camera app for example, has had almost every little-used feature eliminated, and its bare controls now make for a much more pleasant experience.</p> <p>LG&#39;s new Smart Notice is less useful. It&#39;s essentially a Google Now clone, and we can&#39;t see any benefit it offers over Google&#39;s own well-established offering.&nbsp;Smart Clean is more useful, prompting you to clean up and delete apps to save memory.</p> <p>Finally, LG&#39;s excellent Knock Code feature negates the need for any fancy fingerprint scanners. Sorry, Samsung. It lets you tap out a pattern on the G3&#39;s screen (even when it&#39;s off),and with over 80,000 combinations, and a higher reliability than fingerprint scanning, LG&#39;s hit on a winner.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/7-best-apps-and-games-lg-g3/feature" target="_blank">7 of the best apps and games for the LG G3</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ultimate-setup-lg-g3/feature" target="_blank">Ultimate setup: LG G3</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="All the colours of the (LG) rainbow" alt="Which smartphone? For one thing, it has an excellent screen that, despite being larger than its rivals, doesn&#39;t increase the size of the G3 itself, thanks to LG&#39;s bezel-trimming magic.</p> <p>Its camera is superb and adaptable, and its build, although not metal, both looks and feels good. A removable battery and microSD storage are the cherries on top of an already very tasty cake.</p> <p>The S5 points to a flashy future, the Z2 a controlled one, and the One M8 continues to push design boundaries. It&rsquo;s lightweight and waterproof, while its all-glass back and aluminium edges are elegant in the extreme. The problem we have with it is its shape: it&rsquo;s just too darn square and angular for its size, which makes it uncomfortable to hold.</p> <p>You couldn&rsquo;t say that for the LG G3 which, while it boasts a bigger screen than the Z2 (5.5in versus 5.2in), manages to feel far better in your hand thanks to its balanced weight and curvaceous shape. It&rsquo;s over 10g lighter than the Z2 too. But it&rsquo;s not all roses and kittens: some will find the plastic build a disappointment; its back panel may look like brushed metal, but it&rsquo;s all a big ruse.</p> <p>This is a tough one to call. The G3 is the more ergonomically sound of the pair, but the Z2 is more handsome &ndash; and its waterproofing has the potential to save you a lot of bother. We&rsquo;re leaning towards the Sony overall.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Sony Xperia Z2</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Sony Xperia Z2 has a glass rear plate" alt="The Sony Xperia Z2 has a glass rear plate" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-rear-trio.jpg?1401380434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The LG G3&#039;s back is pure plastic" alt="The LG G3&#039;s back is pure plastic" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g3-rear-trio_1.jpg?1401380434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen – the pixels have it </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The LG G3 is currently in a class of its own when it comes to resolution: its 5.5in LCD screen packs a 2K pixel count of 2560 x 1440, which equals 538 pixels-per-inch. No other phone on the UK market matches that resolution. It&rsquo;s insanely sharp, and despite being bigger than any phone bar a phablet, LG has made the bezel so narrow that it doesn&rsquo;t feel freakishly large.</p> <p>The Sony Z2&rsquo;s 5.2in 1920 x 1080 LCD (424ppi) is lovely, it&rsquo;s true &ndash; its Triluminous technology means the images it produces are some of the boldest and punchiest we&rsquo;ve seen on a smartphone. And it remains to be seen if 2K is really necessary for a display this size.</p> <p>But the sheer level of pixels on the G3 mean it&rsquo;s got this round sewn up &ndash; for now.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: LG G3</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3-hands-review/feature">LG G3: hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The G3 has the UK&#039;s first 2K screen" alt="The G3 has the UK&#039;s first 2K screen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g3-screen_1.jpg?1401380434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance – a pair of Snapdragons </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Both the G3 and Z2 are powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPU, but there are subtle differences in performance specifications: the Z2&rsquo;s 801 is clocked at 2.3GHz, while the G3&rsquo;s goes up to 2.5GHz; the Z2 offers 3GB of RAM, the G3 &ldquo;just&rdquo; 2GB.</p> <p>In real-world use, it may be that the handsets perform equally as ably &ndash; it&rsquo;s hard to tell until we&rsquo;ve had more time with the G3. The Sony, we know for certain, is a real flyer when in use, only eliciting the tiniest bit of lag on very rare occasions. The G3&rsquo;s 2K screen means it has a lot more pixels to wrangle, so that may impact performance too.</p> <p>On the battery life front, we have high hopes for the G3. Its predecessor the G2 was &ndash; or rather, still is &ndash; the king of smartphones when it comes to longevity, and the company claims the G3&rsquo;s 3000mAh battery offers a similarly lengthy lifespan, despite the larger, sharper screen and more powerful processor. We await a review unit to put those claims to the test.</p> <p>The Z2 sports a 3200mAh battery and its longevity is probably slightly above average &ndash; but it can&rsquo;t match the G2, so if LG is correct about the G3, it&rsquo;ll have Sony&rsquo;s handset beaten when it comes to going the distance. It&rsquo;s also removable, so you can always pack a second one if you think you&rsquo;ll need it.</p> <p>Both phones offer 16GB of built-in storage bolstered by a microSD slot, so on that count they&rsquo;re even.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re going to call this round a draw for now. If the G3&rsquo;s screen doesn&rsquo;t dramatically reduce battery life and overall speed, it may just top the Z2 on the performance front &ndash; however, we can&rsquo;t shake the sneaking feeling that the Sony&rsquo;s extra gigabyte of RAM might make it a little less laggy in everyday use. But it&rsquo;s something we can&rsquo;t call until we&rsquo;ve had a chance to review the LG G3 properly.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review">LG G2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The LG G3 has &quot;only&quot; 2GB of RAM" alt="The LG G3 has &quot;only&quot; 2GB of RAM" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g3-flat_0.jpg?1401380434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera – features vs raw power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The LG G3&rsquo;s camera offers a respectable 13MP sensor and backs it up with three features that should improve photo quality quite dramatically: first, there&rsquo;s optical image stabilisation (and apparently an improved version over the G2&rsquo;s, at that) which compensates for shaky hands when shutter speed is slower; second, a two-tone LED flash that&rsquo;ll keep skin tones looking natural; and third, an all-new laser autofocus system that LG says helps the camera lock onto subjects more accurately and swiftly, particularly in dim conditions.</p> <p>The Sony Z2 has a 20.7MP, 1/2.5in sensor with an f/2.0 lens, and has the potential to deliver some truly stunning results for a phone &ndash; in the right conditions, it&rsquo;s probably the best smartphone camera around. We have found that getting these results can take a bit of work, however, and if you&rsquo;re more of a quick snap type of photographer you might find it&rsquo;s not living up to its specs.</p> <p>Both phones can capture 4K, 1080p and 120fps slow motion video.</p> <p>We suspect the G3&rsquo;s camera will provide better photos for most people, especially in low light conditions, but more patient snappers might well prefer the Z2&rsquo;s snapper.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: LG G3</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Few smartphone cameras have the raw power of the Z2" alt="Few smartphone cameras have the raw power of the Z2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-camera_2.png?1401380434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="But the LG G3&#039;s snapper offers more supporting features" alt="But the LG G3&#039;s snapper offers more supporting features" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g3-review-rear-gold_0.jpg?1401380434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS – subtler shades of Android </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Both the G3 and Z2 are Android 4.4 KitKat phones, but as is customary both manufacturers have tinkered somewhat with Google&rsquo;s operating system.</p> <p>Sony&rsquo;s customised interface is fairly light on big changes, with much of the standard Android menus and apps remaining essentially untouched. It does add some nifty gestured-based tricks (tap the screen to wake up the phone, lift it to your ear to answer a call), and the ability to run some apps and widgets in a windowed mode over the top of other apps. On the downside, Sony has chucked in rather a lot of bloatware, and we find its nagging &ldquo; What&rsquo;s New&rdquo; suggestions a tad irritating.</p> <p>As far as we can tell from our time with the G3 so far, LG has taken a step in the right direction. The G2&rsquo;s interface was too busy, too colourful and too choked with bloatware, but the G3 appears to have adopted a cleaner, lighter approach. Bloatware has been reduced by 30 percent (giving you an extra 2GB of free space off the bat), while new software like Smart Clean (which identifies those apps you don&rsquo;t use and encourages you to delete them) and Smart Notice (a Google Now-style app that tells you, for instance, if you&rsquo;ll need an umbrella on a particular day) seem genuinely useful.</p> <p>Both UIs seem well thought out, but neither strikes us &ndash; at this stage &ndash; as particularly better or worse than the other. Another draw for now, until we get a chance to live with the G3 for a while and work out its interface foibles.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="The Z2&#039;s UI is clean – almost stock Android in fact" alt="The Z2&#039;s UI is clean – almost stock Android in fact" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-z2-os.png?1401380434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Until we&rsquo;ve properly reviewed the LG G3, we can&rsquo;t say for sure how good it is, but given ours hands-on time and the quality of its predecessor we&rsquo;re very hopeful that it&rsquo;ll end up proving an all-round better smartphone than the Sony Xperia Z2.</p> <p>The Z2 remains one of our favourite phones, however, and we won&rsquo;t jump to any conclusions before time. It&rsquo;d be a mighty close call between the two, but on paper at least the Z2 looked the better phone. </p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/marc-mclaren" title="View user profile.">Marc McLaren</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Dressed to impress </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Line these two up side by side and it&rsquo;s clear you&rsquo;ve wandered into Premium Phone Town. There&rsquo;s very little plastic on display at all, with both phones crafted almost entirely from metal and glass.</p> <p>Of course the same was true of their predecessors, and the fact is neither of these phones represents a huge tearing up of the rule book. In the case of the M8, there&rsquo;s 20% more metal used in the body, a nice burnished finish and slightly more rounded corners. It&rsquo;s also a fair bit taller on account of its newly embiggened 5in screen, but it&rsquo;s otherwise much the same design that we fell in love with on the HTC One. No bad thing that.</p> <p>The Sony Xperia Z2 has less in common with the Xperia Z1 than the One (M8) does with the One, but Sony&rsquo;s phones still bear a strong family resemblance: as with the M8, the Z2 blends glass and metal near-seamlessly, and like its forebear it&rsquo;s fully sealed against water and dust &ndash; you can take the Z2 into the shower or bathtub with you for up to 30 minutes and it will not mind one little bit.</p> <p>Despite its slightly larger screen (5.2in to 5in), the Z2 is a fair bit skinnier than the HTC One (M8) at just 8.2mm in depth (to 9.4mm). But while admirably svelte, the Z2&rsquo;s angular form makes it a bit of a pain to hold and anyone lacking bear paws should resign themselves to two-handed use here.</p> <p>Looks-wise, both phones are handsome in their own way, but to our tastes the M8 is the more attractive of the two. And although the M8&rsquo;s extra height makes it harder to hold than the original One, it&rsquo;s still a lot easier to handle than the Z2.</p> <p><strong>Winner: HTC One (M8)</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-htc-one-m8/feature">Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One (M8)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The HTC One (M8) is quite the looker" alt="Which smartphone? That makes the (M8)&rsquo;s pixel density slightly higher (441 to 424ppi), but you&rsquo;d have to have the eyes of a hawk to see any real difference in sharpness deriving from that.</p> <p>In use, the One (M8)&rsquo;s screen is sharp with &ldquo;satisfyingly vibrant&rdquo; colours and excellent off-axis viewing angles. Full HD movies look excellent too and try as we might, we can&rsquo;t find anything negative to say about it.</p> <p>The Z2&rsquo;s screen is every bit as special in most situations, with wonderfully vivid colours, superb contrast and crisp text. Viewing angles are much improved over the Z1, too, with nothing given away to the HTC in that regard. Ultimately, both screens are as close to flawless as makes no difference, so we&rsquo;re calling this one a tie.</p> <p><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-45/review">Android 4.5 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Z2&#039;s screen now has better viewing angles" alt="Which smartphone? It has a 20.7MP sensor that&rsquo;s physically large (1/2.3in in size), giving it excellent light-gathering capabilities, and the camera also features a Background Defocus mode, which takes two shots and merges them together to give the impression of a short depth of field.</p> <p>On the video front, it can record 4K footage (at a resolution of 3840 x 2160) or 120fps 720p footage for super slo-mo playback. Plus, SteadyShot image stabilisation helps videos look rock solid even when your hands aren&rsquo;t.</p> <p>The results are often incredible, rivalling those you&rsquo;d get from decent compact cameras; only <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review">Nokia&rsquo;s Lumia 1020</a> gives it any real competition as far as smartphones go. Admittedly, it&rsquo;s not the easiest camera for a novice to use, and the Superior Auto mode doesn&rsquo;t always give you perfect results. But learn to get the best from it and you&rsquo;ll reap the rewards.</p> <p>HTC has also put a lot of effort into the One (M8)&rsquo;s photo and video skills, but it&rsquo;s taken an entirely different approach to the Sony. As with the original One, the rear camera uses a sensor with bigger &lsquo;UltraPixel&rsquo; sites, but fewer megapixels - a mere 4MP, like the original One. What it means is that low light images are less noisy and sharper, but also that you can&rsquo;t zoom in to crop your shots without them looking blocky.</p> <p>Still, an iPhone 5s-style dual LED flash helps deliver more natural-looking skin tones and, most interestingly, there&rsquo;s a second rear camera that captures &lsquo;depth information&rsquo;; this essentially allows you to refocus shots after you&rsquo;ve taken them (a little like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lytro/review">Lytro camera</a>). As far as video goes, there&rsquo;s 1080p but no 4K. </p> <p>On the front-facing camera, er, front, the One (M8)&rsquo;s has a 5MP sensor and 1080p video capabilities, while the Xperia Z2&rsquo;s has a 2.2MP sensor, also compatible with 1080p. So if you&rsquo;re a selfie addict, the M8 has an advantage here. </p> <p>Overall though, the Z2 is the clear winner here. In low light the HTC just pips it, but in almost every other situation the Sony leaves its rival in the dust. </p> <p><strong>Winner: Sony Xperia Z2</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/10-best-apps-htc-one-m8/feature">The 10 best apps for the HTC One (M8)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="HTC One (M8)&#039;s dual lens rear camera" alt="Which smartphone? Both tear through HD movies and graphics-heavy games, both will do you proud in day to day use. That said, we did suffer the odd stutter when testing the Z2, and we also noticed it heating up when shooting 4K video. Now BlinkFeed was already a very tasty bit of software, aggregating your social media feeds and favourite news sources into one scrollable, magazine-style format. Previously sources were limited to official partners, but now you can add any site with an RSS feed and the software also learns which sites you like best and thus prioritises them.</p> <p>Other nice touches include the ability to turn on the screen by tapping it twice, or to swipe from various sides to go straight into BlinkFeed, your last-opened app or your home screen.</p> <p>Sony traditionally goes for a more hands-off approach when skinning Android, but it has made a few tweaks for the Z2. One of these is a Smart Backlight feature, which automatically turns off the screen when you&rsquo;re no longer looking at it - good news for battery life. As with the One (M8) you can also wake the phone with a simple double-tap.</p> <p>Truth be told, there&rsquo;s not much between the two here, but we&rsquo;re so enamoured with BlinkFeed that the HTC triumphs again. Given that the app will soon be available to download on all Android devices, we might have to revisit this category in the near future.</p> <p><strong>Winner: HTC One (M8)</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/ultimate-setup-htc-one-m8/feature">The best cases, headphones and accessories for the HTC One (M8)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The superb BlinkFeed in action" alt="Which smartphone? If a top quality camera with bags of versatility is a must, the Z2 is the better bet. Let&rsquo;s start with build quality. Both the S5 and Z2 are built to withstand the caprices of the British climate, being fully waterproof (to IP67 standard in the case of the S5, IP55 for the Sony) &ndash; but there the similarities end.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy S5 has, like previous Galaxy S series phones, a removable rear panel (which lets you get to the swappable battery and additional storage), but despite this it feels solid enough. We say &ldquo;enough&rdquo; because, while there&rsquo;s not much flex or creakiness here, if you crank up the speaker loud enough you can hear this back panel vibrating like a frightened puppy in a snowstorm. Not what we&rsquo;d expect from a flagship phone ideally. And yet, despite the heavy reliance on plastic (sorry, polycarbonate), the S5 is the most solidly made phone Samsung has ever produced.</p> <p>The build quality of the Sony Xperia Z2 allows for no such bad vibrations. Glass and metal seemingly fuse together into a seamless block. This is more like it, you might think, but there&rsquo;s something that feels a bit wrong here, and it&rsquo;s not the solidity &ndash; it&rsquo;s the size and shape, with the big old blockiness of the Z2 making it uncomfortable to hold in one hand compared to the S5.</p> <p>In terms of looks, the Sony walks all over the Samsung. No surprises there: despite steadily improving the appearance of the Galaxy S series, Samsung is forever struggling to design a truly desirable phone.&nbsp; The Z2, on the other hand, is tasteful and understated &ndash; almost as ravishing as an iPhone 5s.</p> <p>That said, we&rsquo;re going to give this round to the S5 &ndash; just. While the Z2 has the beating of it in aesthetics and solidity, its size and shape are just too much to get past, especially considering the similarity in screen sizes.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Samsung Galaxy S5</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-galaxy-s4-eight-reasons-upgrade/feature" target="_blank">8 reasons to upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S5</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Blue dimples versus sleek glass" alt="Which smartphone? It&rsquo;s a little less bright than the Samsung, though, which makes outdoor viewing less of a strength.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re calling this one a tie. It has a remarkably swift autofocus &ndash; quite possibly the quickest we&rsquo;ve seen on a phone in fact&nbsp;&ndash; and in good lighting it produces shots with accurate colour, punchy contrast and fine detail. It also comes with an effective new HDR mode that helps to deliver good results where there&rsquo;s both bright and dark areas to shoot. In low light, however, it&rsquo;s merely acceptable, with more grain than a couple of jars of French mustard creeping in.</p> <p>The Sony Z2&rsquo;s 20.7MP camera is in another league altogether, however. It&rsquo;s probably, in fact, the best camera ever seen on a smartphone, focusing accurately and at speed and producing stills with more detail, more accurate exposure and punchier contrast than the S5. It also works better in dim conditions, although not quite as effectively as the HTC One (M8). You may have to wrestle a little with its manual controls to get the best possible shots, but put in the work and you&rsquo;ll end up with images no other phone can match (with the possible exception of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review" target="_blank">Nokia Lumia 1020</a>).</p> <p>Both phones can shoot 4K and 1080p video. The Z2 has an alarming tendency to heat up during 4K filming and abruptly stop after a couple of minutes, but Sony is working on a fix for this; the Samsung suffers no such problems.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Sony Xperia Z2</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo/review" target="_blank">Samsung Gear 2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Sony Z2 is probably better at taking photos than your compact camera" alt="Which smartphone? Watched off axis, colours would fade away and text would become tricky to decipher</p> <p>Not so the Z2, which has improved performance immeasurably. Viewing angles on the new 5.2in IPS display may not be quite perfect, but it&rsquo;s no longer a critical flaw.</p> <p>And it&rsquo;s not the only way the Z2 improves on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/honami/sony-xperia-honami-z1/review" target="_blank">Z1&rsquo;s screen</a>. Colours - which were already eye-popping - are now even more vivid thanks to Sony&rsquo;s Live Colour LED tech. Stick on a full HD video and you&rsquo;ll also notice that contrast is outstanding and detail plentiful. Apps, emails and webpages look crisp and clean and you can even geek out and tweak the white balance. The viewing experience is further enhanced by the clear and loud stereo speakers, which Sony has moved to the front of phone and which rival the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">HTC One (M8)&rsquo;s</a> for quality, if not volume.</p> <p>For settling down at home or giving Planet Earth another viewing on the train, the Sony&rsquo;s screen is simply superb. Living with it, there are a couple of niggles to consider. Firstly, the black, featureless front of the Z2 is a fiend for reflecting light and seems to delight in showing up both fingerprints and specks of dust. Secondly, it&rsquo;s not quite as bright as the likes of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>, making its rival a better bet for outdoor use.</p> <p>Then there&rsquo;s Sony&rsquo;s X-Reality engine - a feature which supposedly enhances the picture, but which in our time with it seemed to overdo things. It might be switched on as default, but turning it off is one of the first things we&rsquo;d do. And finally, as beautiful as 1080p movies look in Sony&rsquo;s own app, in every other video player app the picture looks dim even cranked up to full brightness. Which is a shame.</p> <p>So it&rsquo;s not perfect, then, but none of these flaws are major, and in almost every way the Z2&rsquo;s screen is a stunner.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-htc-one-m8/feature" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5 versus HTC One (M8)&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Eye-caressing 1080p screen " alt="Eye-caressing 1080p screen " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-screen-1.png?1408532390" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Movies Unlimited is one of Sony&#039;s excellent media services " alt="Movies Unlimited is one of Sony&#039;s excellent media services " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-movies-unlimited.png?1408532390" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A Camera that&#039;ll trounce your compact </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>For a smartphone camera, the Z2 is capable of taking downright incredible photos.&nbsp;</p> <p>That&rsquo;s no surprise considering it&rsquo;s packing a 1/2.5in, 20.7MP Exmor RS sensor with an f/2.0 lens. Stills are punchy, well exposed and have tons of detail to crop into across all the resolution options - 8MP, 15.5MP, 20.7MP. Framing and autofocus are seriously speedy, too. Point the Z2 at your subject and, combined with its processing power and brilliant screen, it&rsquo;s like you&rsquo;re looking straight through the smartphone. And instantly too. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>As well as including tons of fun features (try background defocus for wow factor), Sony&rsquo;s kept its excellent manual controls. EV, ISO, white balance, focus modes and more are on hand for the times when you want to tinker with your shots. And getting to know them all is a good idea, because you won&rsquo;t always get the best shots from the Z2&rsquo;s Superior Auto mode.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s generally very good, switching to its excellent macro or night modes quickly and flawlessly. But at other times, it seems to struggle. Point it into direct sunlight, for instance, and it won&rsquo;t do such a good job with exposure. It doesn&rsquo;t always have the night vision of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">One (M8)</a> in very low light, either, but then again it&rsquo;s better at snapping faces without the need for the flash indoors - a much more useful talent, in our book.</p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/13779359504/in/set-72157643800388303/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe>&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Video can be shot in 1080p and 4K and in both instances footage is seriously smooth, even when walking about, thanks to Sony&rsquo;s SteadyShot stabilisation. A warning for those planning to shoot a 4K movie, though: after a couple of minutes the Z2 often gets too hot, flashes up a warning, then abruptly stops shooting - we hope Sony&rsquo;s working on fixing this, as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Galaxy S5</a> handles the rigours of 4K just fine.&nbsp;</p> <p>All in all, the Z2 does require a bit of work to get great photos and footage, meaning that it&rsquo;s not the most practical phone to go out snapping with: it&rsquo;s a bit unwieldy compared to lighter or curvier phones and the rear camera is right in the top corner of the device. Hello, giant blurry fingerprint.&nbsp;</p> <p>Still, for many it&rsquo;ll be worth the effort. We&rsquo;re yet to pit it against <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review" target="_blank">Nokia&rsquo;s 1020</a> but there&rsquo;s no question the Z2 is one of the best smartphone cameras we&rsquo;ve come across, if you can use it to its full potential.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-g/best-cheap-smartphone-you-can-buy/feature">The best cheap smartphones you can buy including the &pound;150 Xperia M2</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We won&#039;t say no to this 20.7MP camera - and no hideous bump either " alt="We won&#039;t say no to this 20.7MP camera - and no hideous bump either " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-camera.png?1408532390" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Easy to access Xperia camera features " alt="Easy to access Xperia camera features " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-camera-features.png?1408532390" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A Gallery-worthy design, but your hands might not like it </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If the HTC One and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">One (M8)</a> were taken out of the equation, the Z2 would comfortably be the classiest Android phone on the market - a real object of desire. It&rsquo;s so beautifully finished, with smoothly rounded corners, an all-glass back and machined aluminium edges, that we&rsquo;re tempted to install a rotating plinth for it in our living room.</p> <p>Next to the Z1, it fits more screen into a lighter body, and with all the port flaps closed it has the same water resistance rating (IP55/58) as its predecessor, so it&rsquo;s safe from splashes and can even take underwater swimming pool pics. We haven&rsquo;t dunked this unit yet but we&rsquo;ll update the review when we have.</p> <p>However, a gorgeous design isn&rsquo;t the same as a thoughtful design, and it&rsquo;s here that the Z2 falls down. Although it&#39;s a heavy smartphone, it&#39;s not the weight that&#39;s the issue; rather, it&#39;s that the Z2&#39;s toughened glass build would work better scaled down. When you&#39;re dealing with a 5.2in diagonal span of glass, ergonomics really count. Z2 Compact, anyone?</p> <p>Even the massive <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a> can feel easier to manage than the Z2, and our love for the Z2&#39;s brilliant camera and screen have been dampened by practicality problems; just picking it up from a flat desk can be awkward.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s a happy middle ground between form and function, and the Z2 doesn&#39;t quite find it. Put simply, this is a phone you need to pick up before you pre-order. If its shape works for you, you can get back to appreciating everything it does brilliantly.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">HTC One (M8) review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="An early example of Sony&#039;s Blue Period" alt="An early example of Sony&#039;s Blue Period" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-lockscreen.png?1408532390" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Play find the microSD card slot " alt="Play find the microSD card slot " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-power-button.png?1408532390" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Two gorgeous designs but we find the HTC more hand-friendly " alt="Two gorgeous designs but we find the HTC more hand-friendly " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z-vs-htc-one-m8.png?1408532390" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> An Android skin that&#039;s (mainly) clutter-free </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sony&rsquo;s customised Android interface does a much better job at compromising in the right places. It can even run small windowed apps (including widgets) on top of another running app, getting good use out of that spacious 5.2in screen.</p> <p>Sony has also picked up the best gesture-based tricks of its rivals and quietly added them to the Z2. So, raising the phone to your ear answers a call, and tapping the screen wakes the device up. One handy time-saver is better than five half-baked features, and the Z2 knows it.</p> <p>Just one thing: Sony&#39;s now on the slippery bloatware slope that Samsung is finally managing to crawl back up. Unwanted software additions don&rsquo;t take up too much space on the Z2&#39;s interface for now, but there&#39;s danger of it creeping in all over the place. When we swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access Google Now, we&rsquo;re not looking for Sony&#39;s What&rsquo;s New suggestions, already present as a elsewhere as a standalone homescreen widget. The relatively uncluttered Android experience probably helps to keep running smooth, too.</p> <p>In fact, the only stutters we&rsquo;ve encountered in days of putting the Z2 through its multi-tasking, gaming and downloading paces are the occasional lag when scrolling through the calendar or browser, running as small apps on top of others. Once or twice. That&rsquo;s it.</p> <p>The benchmarks agree. AnTuTu gives our Z2 a score of 32,504, which is slightly below the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">One (M8) </a>but which still puts it in the upper echelons of high-performing 2014 smartphones. Then there&rsquo;s Geekbench 3, which gives 2489 to the Sony, with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Galaxy S5</a> scoring 2551. (Higher is better in both cases.)</p> <p>As with the Z1, the only worry here is that whenever the Z2&rsquo;s Snapdragon is overworked - shooting 4K video or heavy gaming - the handset heats up and, as we mentioned, with 4K video the Z2 will actually stop shooting if it gets too hot.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A Stamina mode to save the day </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If there&rsquo;s one thing super-powered smartphones compromise on, it&rsquo;s battery life - if you want the best handset, you usually end up with a microUSB cable next to your pillow. The Z2&rsquo;s battery isn&rsquo;t game-changingly good but it is reliably excellent and will always last the day.</p> <p>With a 5.2in screen to power, that reliable battery life is partly down to it having a bigger 3200mAh battery than the Z1&rsquo;s 3000mAh unit, and also thanks to its Stamina mode. We&rsquo;ve been fans of this Sony-specific feature for a while, as it does a cracking job of conserving juice by powering down the phone&#39;s data connection when the screen&#39;s turned off.</p> <p>If the brightness is cranked up (and you&rsquo;ll need it to be when you&rsquo;re outdoors), battery does suffer. On our 1 hour 15 minute commute of hammering the Xperia hard, it dropped by 29%. Its dimpled matte backside (initially available in four colours) is easy on the eyes and comfy in your hand, and a welcome change from the ill-advised fake stitched leather look of recent Galaxy Note models. It&rsquo;s a solidly put together phone despite its light weight (145g) and boasts IP67 protection to keep out dust and water. The signs are there that Samsung&rsquo;s engineers are definitely getting their act together.</p> <p>And yet, it&rsquo;s still a phone with a plastic back. The Sony Xperia Z2 on the other hand is a gloriously seamless fusion of metal and glass. True, it&rsquo;s a little heavier than the S5 (163g) but grasp it in your mitt and its cool weight screams &ldquo;Yes, I&rsquo;m a premium phone&rdquo;. Samsung still hasn&rsquo;t got there yet. The Z2 has IP67 protection and like the S5 can survive a rainstorm or a dunk in the bath totally unscathed.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Sony Xperia Z2</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Plastic vs metal " alt="Plastic vs metal " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/build.jpg?1393807839" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Display case </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>On the surface there&rsquo;s very little difference between the two phones&rsquo; screens. The Galaxy S5 sports a 5.1in 1920 x 1080 Super AMOLED display while the Z2 rocks a 5.2in 1920 x 1080 Triluminos IPS screen.</p> <p>Without having compared them directly yet, we&rsquo;re loath to call this one. The size difference and pixel density difference are negligible so the real battlegrounds here are colour reproduction, contrast and viewing angles.</p> <p>AMOLED typically excels in all three areas, but Sony&rsquo;s smartphone displays are always a treat for the eyes and the Z2&rsquo;s new Live Colour LED tech, which uses custom filters and phosphors to produce a more even backlight and deeper colours, should make this the best yet. IPS also offers stellar viewing angles.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s just too close to call at the moment. On the video front, it can shoot in 120fps for smooth slow motion playback. There&rsquo;s also a 2.1MP front-facing camera.</p> <p>Like the Xperia Z1, the Z2 boasts a 20.7MP rear camera &ndash; but the sensor in the Z2 is physically bigger (1/2.3in) which should mean better light-gathering abilities and thus cleaner, sharper photos. On the camera app front, it offers Background Defocus (similar to the S5&rsquo;s Selective Focus). It also comes with SteadyShot image stabilisation, which smooths motion and panning when capturing video. Oh, and speaking of video, the Z2 can record it in 4K quality (3840 x 2160 pixels), not to mention 120fps for 720p slo-mo playback.</p> <p>The specs clearly suggest that Sony is the winner here, but we&rsquo;ll find out for certain when we get our hands on both phones.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Sony Xperia Z2</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/camera.jpg?1393807839" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power: two beefy bros </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>These two are just about the most powerful smartphones on the planet right now, and there&rsquo;s very little between them.</p> <p>The Sony Xperia Z2 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz, plus 3GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S5 has a slightly faster Snapdragon 805 quad-core chip running at 2.5GHz, but 2GB of RAM. Neither is 64-bit compatible.</p> <p>We haven&rsquo;t had the chance to benchmark or real-world test them yet, but our gut feeling is that (a) the Z2 might be a bit better at multitasking (b) the S5 might be slightly quicker overall and (c) both handsets are going to be blazingly fast and capable of handling anything you might care to throw at them.</p> <p>The S5 sports one speed-related feature we really like the sound of: Download Booster, which uses 4G and Wi-Fi simultaneously to help files download much faster.</p> <p>The Z2 features a 3000mAh battery delivering (according to Sony) 19 hours of talk time, up to 880 hours of standby and up to 10 hours of video playback. Fortunately, in the case of the Xperia Z2, that&rsquo;s no bad thing&hellip;</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/fraser-macdonald" title="View user profile.">Fraser Macdonald</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Design &amp; Build: Sony’s OmniBalance philosophy remains omniawesome </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There&rsquo;s no doubt about it, Sony&rsquo;s Xperia Z finish, with metal sides and seamless glass panels front and rear, is up there with the iPhones of this world. The central position of the power button has a few detractors but many fans, and we would put ourselves in the latter camp. Well, no, it&rsquo;s more than that. It&rsquo;s an entirely new panel, with new Live Colour LED tech. Here&rsquo;s the science: apparently it uses red and green phosphor with blue LEDs and customised colour filters to produce a richer and more uniform light. We were shown a Z2 and a Z1 side-by-side showing the same still image and blow us down if the Z2 image didn&rsquo;t look notably better! </p><p>Later, having convinced the Sony staff to go and take a break, we tried to ascertain the screen&rsquo;s real improvement over its predecessor, but this was tricky under the harsh fluorescent light of Sony&rsquo;s offices. True reckoning will have to wait until we get one into the dingy, unforgiving Stuff labs. In the meantime, expectedly enough, the screen looks vibrant and colourful, and having a wee bit more space with a chassis no bigger nor heavier than the Z1 can only be a win.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="675" title="Sony Xperia Z2 screen" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 screen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-hands-on-3.jpg?1394188897" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: every little thing’s going to be 4K </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Scrabbling around the Z2&rsquo;s files looking for something to test the screen reminded us of another headline spec that needed checking: the 4K video capability. Again, difficult to test constructively in a short hands-on but it seems to fire up and record pretty snappily. The ability crop into videos post-capture is pretty compelling &ndash; you can get a quick ranging shot by pinch-and-zooming into playback on the phone&rsquo;s screen. Sony showed us a broad cityscape that looked to be a still until they tech guy zoomed in and showed the cars and boats moving. </p><p>In other stolen-from-the-Sony-camcorder-department news, the Z2 has SteadyShot tech. A Sony engineer duly produced an electro-wobble-board and, indeed, the Z2 with the feature turned on displayed a steadier picture. The best way to capture decent sound to go with your fancy, steadyish, video will be the new stereo microphone attachment, the STM10. It plugs into the headphone socket, but uses a special jack that means it&rsquo;ll only work with the Z2 and Z2 Tablet. Sony, there, showing it hasn&rsquo;t lost its love of proprietary technologies.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Audio: now you hear me, now you don’t </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>And the best way to listen to the stereo sound that you took with your 4K video that you want to watch on your Live Colour LED screen? Well, that would be using the world&rsquo;s first digital noise-cancelling smartphone set-up. For that you need Sony&rsquo;s &euro;60 MDR-NC31EM earphones but, good news, in the UK, they&rsquo;ll come bundled with your Z2. Microphones in the earpieces measure the ambient noise, which is then cancelled out by the tech producing an anti-noise &ndash; you know all this stuff. What&rsquo;s unique is that the earphones don&rsquo;t need power or charging because the phone does the graft. Hooray! What&rsquo;s unique about that is that the noise-cancelling tech won&rsquo;t work with any other headphones except the MDR-NC31EM. Fortunately it has a 3200mAh battery to keep this whirling dervish trucking &lsquo;til teatime. In terms of this &lsquo;hands-on&rsquo; review, however, these specs are largely unquantifiable. In the 20 minutes we had, the Z2 did not run out of battery and &ndash; no doubt due to it having nothing but the standard slew of Sonyware installed &ndash; ran pretty slickly. </p><p>If you really want to test the battery, then the best way would be firing up a GPU testing game, which you play by wirelessly connecting a Playstation DualShock 3 pad. This only really works if you then output the phone&rsquo;s video via the MHL jack; otherwise you&rsquo;re holding the pad near your face where the phone would normally be, and balancing the phone behind that.
