Want to clear some emails in the shower? Go for it.</p> <p>The only thing that's exposed are the two pogo pins on the left-hand side, which work with Sony's DK26 charging dock.&nbsp;</p> <p>Available in black, white and purple versions, the angular Xperia Z is the best looking Sony flagship we've seen in quite some time – it's particularly gratifying that the waterproofing and solid build haven't come at the expense of sexy styling. One annoyance: there's no removable battery, like the Nexus 4 and of course cheaper Sony phones like the Xperia J.</p> <p>Overall this is a very grown-up looking smartphone. Not only does it make Samsung’s flagship look like a cheap toy with its tempered glass build and thoughtful design details, the Xperia Z also ups the ante with serious specs: a pin-sharp 5in 1080p screen, 4G, a quad-core Snapdragon brain and Jelly Bean 4.2 due just after launch. Sure, you may not feel the full benefit of those stonking figures right now, but you will have a lightning-fast, future-proof beast of a handset.</p> <p>But it’s not all about the spec wars. Its battery-boosting Stamina mode will make sure the Xperia Z outlasts its rivals, and with a tough pavement-proof screen, intuitive compact-cam style photo controls and a waterproof body, it’s clear that Sony’s really looking out for the everyday gadgeteer. The iPhone's screen is as fragile as ever, too – prone to cracking after one drop, which is a bit of an issue.</p><p>Sony has abandoned the flimsy plastic builds of many of the Xperia Z's Android rivals, delivering a sleek, restrained glass design that works rather than wows. While some will love the glass frame and understated styling, it doesn't stand out from the crowd in the way the iPhone 5 does – unless you opt for the purple finish, of course. Sony's excellent Bravia technologies and a 5in screen size help with legibility and colour accuracy, too.</p><p>The iPhone 5's smaller 4in display means that the difference doesn't immediately leap out at you – plus it's a better option for gadgeteers with dinky digits. It's worth pointing out that there are few apps and games taking advantage of that extra oomph at the moment, though – so picking up the Xperia Z is more of an exercise in future-proofing at this point.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iphone-5-vs-sony-xperia-z-02.jpg?1364407216" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="500" height="50" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/new-twitter-banner_888.jpg?1364407216" /> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple iPhone 5 vs Sony Xperia Z – verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Although it seems unfair to pit a brand new device against an aging veteran, the iPhone 5 isn't actually that old – and if you're in the market for a new device, these will be two phones you may well consider buying.</p><p>If features, durability and top-spec performance are most important to you, then the Xperia Z can't be beat. Sure, the display might be a bit big for small-fingered hands, but that really cuts the strain on your eyes – which is great if you spend a lot of time staring at your phone.</p><p>If you're a dedicated iOS fan, the iPhone 5 is a worthy upgrade if you can stomach the extra cost over the still-capable iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S – but the internals are starting to look dated and iOS itself could do with a spot of freshening up. Make no mistake, it's a great phone. But at this point, the competition – including the Xperia Z – is leaving it in a cloud of dust.</p><p><strong>You might also like</strong></p><p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/news/phone/rumour-mill/could-the-next-nokia-lumia-look-like-this">Could the next Nokia Lumia look like this?</a></p><p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/news/computers-and-consoles/rumour-mill/sony-playstation-4-to-come-bundled-with-kinect-rival">Sony PlayStation 4 to come bundled with Kinect rival?</a></p><p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/news/stuff-office-cat/stuff/stuff-office-cat%E2%80%99s-diary-%E2%80%93-080213">Stuff Office Cat’s diary – 08/02/13</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="144" height="43" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/logo_1101.png?1364407216" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="144" height="43" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/logo_3_388.png?1364407216" /> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-legacy-url"> <div class="field-label">Legacy URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> /news/phone/versus/sony-xperia-z-vs-apple-iphone-5 </div> </div> </div> http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z-vs-apple-iphone-5/news#comments Sony Xperia Z Fri, 08 Feb 2013 18:25:01 +0000 Ben Griffin 424176 at http://www.stuff.tv Sony Xperia Z review round up http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z-review-round/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> We take the temperature of the tech world&#039;s impressions of Sony&#039;s flagship Android phone </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="564" height="423" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/sony-Xperia-Z-color-range-1_0.jpg?1364397995" /> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="564" height="423" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/sony-Xperia-Z-color-range_1.jpg?1364397995" /> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="500" height="50" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/new-twitter-banner_244.jpg?1364397995" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>After leaks aplenty, Sony has officially taken the wraps off its flagship <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/news/ces/ces/sony-reveals-waterproof-xperia-z-with-5in-1080p-screen-and-13mp-camera">Xperia Z</a> Android smartphone at <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/news/ces">CES 2013</a>.
