It&rsquo;d be a mighty close call between the two, but on paper at least the Z2 looked the better phone. </p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/marc-mclaren" title="View user profile.">Marc McLaren</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Dressed to impress </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Line these two up side by side and it&rsquo;s clear you&rsquo;ve wandered into Premium Phone Town. There&rsquo;s very little plastic on display at all, with both phones crafted almost entirely from metal and glass.</p> <p>Of course the same was true of their predecessors, and the fact is neither of these phones represents a huge tearing up of the rule book. In the case of the M8, there&rsquo;s 20% more metal used in the body, a nice burnished finish and slightly more rounded corners. It&rsquo;s also a fair bit taller on account of its newly embiggened 5in screen, but it&rsquo;s otherwise much the same design that we fell in love with on the HTC One. No bad thing that.</p> <p>The Sony Xperia Z2 has less in common with the Xperia Z1 than the One (M8) does with the One, but Sony&rsquo;s phones still bear a strong family resemblance: as with the M8, the Z2 blends glass and metal near-seamlessly, and like its forebear it&rsquo;s fully sealed against water and dust &ndash; you can take the Z2 into the shower or bathtub with you for up to 30 minutes and it will not mind one little bit.</p> <p>Despite its slightly larger screen (5.2in to 5in), the Z2 is a fair bit skinnier than the HTC One (M8) at just 8.2mm in depth (to 9.4mm). But while admirably svelte, the Z2&rsquo;s angular form makes it a bit of a pain to hold and anyone lacking bear paws should resign themselves to two-handed use here.</p> <p>Looks-wise, both phones are handsome in their own way, but to our tastes the M8 is the more attractive of the two. And although the M8&rsquo;s extra height makes it harder to hold than the original One, it&rsquo;s still a lot easier to handle than the Z2.</p> <p><strong>Winner: HTC One (M8)</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-htc-one-m8/feature">Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One (M8)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The HTC One (M8) is quite the looker" alt="Which smartphone? That makes the (M8)&rsquo;s pixel density slightly higher (441 to 424ppi), but you&rsquo;d have to have the eyes of a hawk to see any real difference in sharpness deriving from that.</p> <p>In use, the One (M8)&rsquo;s screen is sharp with &ldquo;satisfyingly vibrant&rdquo; colours and excellent off-axis viewing angles. Full HD movies look excellent too and try as we might, we can&rsquo;t find anything negative to say about it.</p> <p>The Z2&rsquo;s screen is every bit as special in most situations, with wonderfully vivid colours, superb contrast and crisp text. Viewing angles are much improved over the Z1, too, with nothing given away to the HTC in that regard. Ultimately, both screens are as close to flawless as makes no difference, so we&rsquo;re calling this one a tie.</p> <p><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-45/review">Android 4.5 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Z2&#039;s screen now has better viewing angles" alt="Which smartphone? It has a 20.7MP sensor that&rsquo;s physically large (1/2.3in in size), giving it excellent light-gathering capabilities, and the camera also features a Background Defocus mode, which takes two shots and merges them together to give the impression of a short depth of field.</p> <p>On the video front, it can record 4K footage (at a resolution of 3840 x 2160) or 120fps 720p footage for super slo-mo playback. Plus, SteadyShot image stabilisation helps videos look rock solid even when your hands aren&rsquo;t.</p> <p>The results are often incredible, rivalling those you&rsquo;d get from decent compact cameras; only <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review">Nokia&rsquo;s Lumia 1020</a> gives it any real competition as far as smartphones go. Admittedly, it&rsquo;s not the easiest camera for a novice to use, and the Superior Auto mode doesn&rsquo;t always give you perfect results. But learn to get the best from it and you&rsquo;ll reap the rewards.</p> <p>HTC has also put a lot of effort into the One (M8)&rsquo;s photo and video skills, but it&rsquo;s taken an entirely different approach to the Sony. As with the original One, the rear camera uses a sensor with bigger &lsquo;UltraPixel&rsquo; sites, but fewer megapixels - a mere 4MP, like the original One. What it means is that low light images are less noisy and sharper, but also that you can&rsquo;t zoom in to crop your shots without them looking blocky.</p> <p>Still, an iPhone 5s-style dual LED flash helps deliver more natural-looking skin tones and, most interestingly, there&rsquo;s a second rear camera that captures &lsquo;depth information&rsquo;; this essentially allows you to refocus shots after you&rsquo;ve taken them (a little like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lytro/review">Lytro camera</a>). As far as video goes, there&rsquo;s 1080p but no 4K. </p> <p>On the front-facing camera, er, front, the One (M8)&rsquo;s has a 5MP sensor and 1080p video capabilities, while the Xperia Z2&rsquo;s has a 2.2MP sensor, also compatible with 1080p. So if you&rsquo;re a selfie addict, the M8 has an advantage here. </p> <p>Overall though, the Z2 is the clear winner here. In low light the HTC just pips it, but in almost every other situation the Sony leaves its rival in the dust. </p> <p><strong>Winner: Sony Xperia Z2</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/10-best-apps-htc-one-m8/feature">The 10 best apps for the HTC One (M8)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="HTC One (M8)&#039;s dual lens rear camera" alt="Which smartphone? The HTC One (M8) scored 36,149 in our AnTuTu benchmark test while the Z2 managed 32,504 - not really enough of a difference to worry about.</p> <p>The fact is, these are the two most powerful phones we&rsquo;ve ever tested. Both tear through HD movies and graphics-heavy games, both will do you proud in day to day use. That said, we did suffer the odd stutter when testing the Z2, and we also noticed it heating up when shooting 4K video. The problem was severe enough to make our handset quit shooting on occasion, and for that reason we&rsquo;re going to award this round to the HTC. Now BlinkFeed was already a very tasty bit of software, aggregating your social media feeds and favourite news sources into one scrollable, magazine-style format. Previously sources were limited to official partners, but now you can add any site with an RSS feed and the software also learns which sites you like best and thus prioritises them.</p> <p>Other nice touches include the ability to turn on the screen by tapping it twice, or to swipe from various sides to go straight into BlinkFeed, your last-opened app or your home screen.</p> <p>Sony traditionally goes for a more hands-off approach when skinning Android, but it has made a few tweaks for the Z2. One of these is a Smart Backlight feature, which automatically turns off the screen when you&rsquo;re no longer looking at it - good news for battery life. As with the One (M8) you can also wake the phone with a simple double-tap.</p> <p>Truth be told, there&rsquo;s not much between the two here, but we&rsquo;re so enamoured with BlinkFeed that the HTC triumphs again. Given that the app will soon be available to download on all Android devices, we might have to revisit this category in the near future.</p> <p><strong>Winner: HTC One (M8)</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/ultimate-setup-htc-one-m8/feature">The best cases, headphones and accessories for the HTC One (M8)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The superb BlinkFeed in action" alt="Which smartphone? Let&rsquo;s start with build quality. Both the S5 and Z2 are built to withstand the caprices of the British climate, being fully waterproof (to IP67 standard in the case of the S5, IP55 for the Sony) &ndash; but there the similarities end.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy S5 has, like previous Galaxy S series phones, a removable rear panel (which lets you get to the swappable battery and additional storage), but despite this it feels solid enough. We say &ldquo;enough&rdquo; because, while there&rsquo;s not much flex or creakiness here, if you crank up the speaker loud enough you can hear this back panel vibrating like a frightened puppy in a snowstorm. Not what we&rsquo;d expect from a flagship phone ideally. And yet, despite the heavy reliance on plastic (sorry, polycarbonate), the S5 is the most solidly made phone Samsung has ever produced.</p> <p>The build quality of the Sony Xperia Z2 allows for no such bad vibrations. Glass and metal seemingly fuse together into a seamless block. This is more like it, you might think, but there&rsquo;s something that feels a bit wrong here, and it&rsquo;s not the solidity &ndash; it&rsquo;s the size and shape, with the big old blockiness of the Z2 making it uncomfortable to hold in one hand compared to the S5.</p> <p>In terms of looks, the Sony walks all over the Samsung. No surprises there: despite steadily improving the appearance of the Galaxy S series, Samsung is forever struggling to design a truly desirable phone.&nbsp; The Z2, on the other hand, is tasteful and understated &ndash; almost as ravishing as an iPhone 5s.</p> <p>That said, we&rsquo;re going to give this round to the S5 &ndash; just. While the Z2 has the beating of it in aesthetics and solidity, its size and shape are just too much to get past, especially considering the similarity in screen sizes.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Samsung Galaxy S5</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-galaxy-s4-eight-reasons-upgrade/feature" target="_blank">8 reasons to upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S5</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Blue dimples versus sleek glass" alt="Which smartphone? It&rsquo;s a little less bright than the Samsung, though, which makes outdoor viewing less of a strength.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re calling this one a tie. It has a remarkably swift autofocus &ndash; quite possibly the quickest we&rsquo;ve seen on a phone in fact&nbsp;&ndash; and in good lighting it produces shots with accurate colour, punchy contrast and fine detail. It also comes with an effective new HDR mode that helps to deliver good results where there&rsquo;s both bright and dark areas to shoot. In low light, however, it&rsquo;s merely acceptable, with more grain than a couple of jars of French mustard creeping in.</p> <p>The Sony Z2&rsquo;s 20.7MP camera is in another league altogether, however. It&rsquo;s probably, in fact, the best camera ever seen on a smartphone, focusing accurately and at speed and producing stills with more detail, more accurate exposure and punchier contrast than the S5. It also works better in dim conditions, although not quite as effectively as the HTC One (M8). You may have to wrestle a little with its manual controls to get the best possible shots, but put in the work and you&rsquo;ll end up with images no other phone can match (with the possible exception of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review" target="_blank">Nokia Lumia 1020</a>).</p> <p>Both phones can shoot 4K and 1080p video. The Z2 has an alarming tendency to heat up during 4K filming and abruptly stop after a couple of minutes, but Sony is working on a fix for this; the Samsung suffers no such problems.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Sony Xperia Z2</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo/review" target="_blank">Samsung Gear 2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Sony Z2 is probably better at taking photos than your compact camera" alt="Which smartphone? The front-facing stereo speakers, which mean impressive audio without the need for headphones.</p> <p>The Galaxy S5, on the other hand, comes packed to the gills with bells and whistles: as well as all the eye- and gesture-tracking tech that debuted with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review" target="_blank">Galaxy S4</a>, there are new additions including the fingerprint scanner (not as slick as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a>&rsquo;, but still handy both for screen unlocking and approving mobile payments) and the health-based features. Watched off axis, colours would fade away and text would become tricky to decipher</p> <p>Not so the Z2, which has improved performance immeasurably. Viewing angles on the new 5.2in IPS display may not be quite perfect, but it&rsquo;s no longer a critical flaw.</p> <p>And it&rsquo;s not the only way the Z2 improves on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/honami/sony-xperia-honami-z1/review" target="_blank">Z1&rsquo;s screen</a>. Colours - which were already eye-popping - are now even more vivid thanks to Sony&rsquo;s Live Colour LED tech. Stick on a full HD video and you&rsquo;ll also notice that contrast is outstanding and detail plentiful. Apps, emails and webpages look crisp and clean and you can even geek out and tweak the white balance. The viewing experience is further enhanced by the clear and loud stereo speakers, which Sony has moved to the front of phone and which rival the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">HTC One (M8)&rsquo;s</a> for quality, if not volume.</p> <p>For settling down at home or giving Planet Earth another viewing on the train, the Sony&rsquo;s screen is simply superb. Living with it, there are a couple of niggles to consider. Firstly, the black, featureless front of the Z2 is a fiend for reflecting light and seems to delight in showing up both fingerprints and specks of dust. Secondly, it&rsquo;s not quite as bright as the likes of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>, making its rival a better bet for outdoor use.</p> <p>Then there&rsquo;s Sony&rsquo;s X-Reality engine - a feature which supposedly enhances the picture, but which in our time with it seemed to overdo things. It might be switched on as default, but turning it off is one of the first things we&rsquo;d do. And finally, as beautiful as 1080p movies look in Sony&rsquo;s own app, in every other video player app the picture looks dim even cranked up to full brightness. Which is a shame.</p> <p>So it&rsquo;s not perfect, then, but none of these flaws are major, and in almost every way the Z2&rsquo;s screen is a stunner.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-htc-one-m8/feature" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5 versus HTC One (M8)&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Eye-caressing 1080p screen " alt="Eye-caressing 1080p screen " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-screen-1.png?1397667706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Movies Unlimited is one of Sony&#039;s excellent media services " alt="Movies Unlimited is one of Sony&#039;s excellent media services " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-movies-unlimited.png?1397667706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A Camera that&#039;ll trounce your compact </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>For a smartphone camera, the Z2 is capable of taking downright incredible photos.&nbsp;</p> <p>That&rsquo;s no surprise considering it&rsquo;s packing a 1/2.5in, 20.7MP Exmor RS sensor with an f/2.0 lens. Stills are punchy, well exposed and have tons of detail to crop into across all the resolution options - 8MP, 15.5MP, 20.7MP. Framing and autofocus are seriously speedy, too. Point the Z2 at your subject and, combined with its processing power and brilliant screen, it&rsquo;s like you&rsquo;re looking straight through the smartphone. And instantly too. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>As well as including tons of fun features (try background defocus for wow factor), Sony&rsquo;s kept its excellent manual controls. EV, ISO, white balance, focus modes and more are on hand for the times when you want to tinker with your shots. And getting to know them all is a good idea, because you won&rsquo;t always get the best shots from the Z2&rsquo;s Superior Auto mode.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s generally very good, switching to its excellent macro or night modes quickly and flawlessly. But at other times, it seems to struggle. Point it into direct sunlight, for instance, and it won&rsquo;t do such a good job with exposure. It doesn&rsquo;t always have the night vision of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">One (M8)</a> in very low light, either, but then again it&rsquo;s better at snapping faces without the need for the flash indoors - a much more useful talent, in our book.</p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/13779359504/in/set-72157643800388303/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe>&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Video can be shot in 1080p and 4K and in both instances footage is seriously smooth, even when walking about, thanks to Sony&rsquo;s SteadyShot stabilisation. A warning for those planning to shoot a 4K movie, though: after a couple of minutes the Z2 often gets too hot, flashes up a warning, then abruptly stops shooting - we hope Sony&rsquo;s working on fixing this, as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Galaxy S5</a> handles the rigours of 4K just fine.&nbsp;</p> <p>All in all, the Z2 does require a bit of work to get great photos and footage, meaning that it&rsquo;s not the most practical phone to go out snapping with: it&rsquo;s a bit unwieldy compared to lighter or curvier phones and the rear camera is right in the top corner of the device. Hello, giant blurry fingerprint.&nbsp;</p> <p>Still, for many it&rsquo;ll be worth the effort. We&rsquo;re yet to pit it against <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review" target="_blank">Nokia&rsquo;s 1020</a> but there&rsquo;s no question the Z2 is one of the best smartphone cameras we&rsquo;ve come across, if you can use it to its full potential.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We won&#039;t say no to this 20.7MP camera - and no hideous bump either " alt="We won&#039;t say no to this 20.7MP camera - and no hideous bump either " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-camera.png?1397667706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Easy to access Xperia camera features " alt="Easy to access Xperia camera features " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-camera-features.png?1397667706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A Gallery-worthy design, but your hands might not like it </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If the HTC One and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">One (M8)</a> were taken out of the equation, the Z2 would comfortably be the classiest Android phone on the market - a real object of desire. It&rsquo;s so beautifully finished, with smoothly rounded corners, an all-glass back and machined aluminium edges, that we&rsquo;re tempted to install a rotating plinth for it in our living room.</p> <p>Next to the Z1, it fits more screen into a lighter body, and with all the port flaps closed it has the same water resistance rating (IP55/58) as its predecessor, so it&rsquo;s safe from splashes and can even take underwater swimming pool pics. We haven&rsquo;t dunked this unit yet but we&rsquo;ll update the review when we have.</p> <p>However, a gorgeous design isn&rsquo;t the same as a thoughtful design, and it&rsquo;s here that the Z2 falls down. Although it&#39;s a heavy smartphone, it&#39;s not the weight that&#39;s the issue; rather, it&#39;s that the Z2&#39;s toughened glass build would work better scaled down. When you&#39;re dealing with a 5.2in diagonal span of glass, ergonomics really count. Z2 Compact, anyone?</p> <p>Even the massive <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a> can feel easier to manage than the Z2, and our love for the Z2&#39;s brilliant camera and screen have been dampened by practicality problems; just picking it up from a flat desk can be awkward.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s a happy middle ground between form and function, and the Z2 doesn&#39;t quite find it. Put simply, this is a phone you need to pick up before you pre-order. If its shape works for you, you can get back to appreciating everything it does brilliantly.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">HTC One (M8) review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="An early example of Sony&#039;s Blue Period" alt="An early example of Sony&#039;s Blue Period" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-lockscreen.png?1397667706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Play find the microSD card slot " alt="Play find the microSD card slot " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-review-power-button.png?1397667706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Two gorgeous designs but we find the HTC more hand-friendly " alt="Two gorgeous designs but we find the HTC more hand-friendly " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z-vs-htc-one-m8.png?1397667706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> An Android skin that&#039;s (mainly) clutter-free </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sony&rsquo;s customised Android interface does a much better job at compromising in the right places. It can even run small windowed apps (including widgets) on top of another running app, getting good use out of that spacious 5.2in screen.</p> <p>Sony has also picked up the best gesture-based tricks of its rivals and quietly added them to the Z2. So, raising the phone to your ear answers a call, and tapping the screen wakes the device up. One handy time-saver is better than five half-baked features, and the Z2 knows it.</p> <p>Just one thing: Sony&#39;s now on the slippery bloatware slope that Samsung is finally managing to crawl back up. Unwanted software additions don&rsquo;t take up too much space on the Z2&#39;s interface for now, but there&#39;s danger of it creeping in all over the place. The relatively uncluttered Android experience probably helps to keep running smooth, too.</p> <p>In fact, the only stutters we&rsquo;ve encountered in days of putting the Z2 through its multi-tasking, gaming and downloading paces are the occasional lag when scrolling through the calendar or browser, running as small apps on top of others. Once or twice. That&rsquo;s it.</p> <p>The benchmarks agree. AnTuTu gives our Z2 a score of 32,504, which is slightly below the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">One (M8) </a>but which still puts it in the upper echelons of high-performing 2014 smartphones. Then there&rsquo;s Geekbench 3, which gives 2489 to the Sony, with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Galaxy S5</a> scoring 2551. (Higher is better in both cases.)</p> <p>As with the Z1, the only worry here is that whenever the Z2&rsquo;s Snapdragon is overworked - shooting 4K video or heavy gaming - the handset heats up and, as we mentioned, with 4K video the Z2 will actually stop shooting if it gets too hot.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A Stamina mode to save the day </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If there&rsquo;s one thing super-powered smartphones compromise on, it&rsquo;s battery life - if you want the best handset, you usually end up with a microUSB cable next to your pillow. The Z2&rsquo;s battery isn&rsquo;t game-changingly good but it is reliably excellent and will always last the day.</p> <p>With a 5.2in screen to power, that reliable battery life is partly down to it having a bigger 3200mAh battery than the Z1&rsquo;s 3000mAh unit, and also thanks to its Stamina mode. We&rsquo;ve been fans of this Sony-specific feature for a while, as it does a cracking job of conserving juice by powering down the phone&#39;s data connection when the screen&#39;s turned off.</p> <p>If the brightness is cranked up (and you&rsquo;ll need it to be when you&rsquo;re outdoors), battery does suffer. On our 1 hour 15 minute commute of hammering the Xperia hard, it dropped by 29%. The hardware has slimmed down half a centimetre to just 6.4mm (somehow making the 7.5mm <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">iPad Air</a> look fat) and it now weighs just 426g for the Wi-Fi-only version. That&rsquo;s ludicrously light for a 10in tablet, and even after a couple of hours arm ache won&rsquo;t be a problem for any but the feeblest of gadgeteers.</p> <p>Aside from the surprisingly powerful speakers sensibly being moved to the front of the tablet from the sides and the new placement of the now flap-free headphone jack, that&rsquo;s it for the cosmetic changes.</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/sony-xperia-z2-tablet/gallery?viewid=115912">CHECK OUT OUR FULL XPERIA Z2 TABLET GALLERY&nbsp;</a></p> <p>Like the Tablet Z, it&rsquo;s a sliver of glass and aluminium that feels almost worryingly thin, and not overly comfortable to hold, thanks to an elongated form and slight flex in the middle. The OmniBalance styling, designed to immerse you in what&rsquo;s on the screen, is finished to perfection - from the reflective skeleton frame to the statement power button, lovely to stroke matte back and artfully hidden port flaps. It&#39;s a classy design but all that fussiness is ruined by the bezels, which are huge by 2014&rsquo;s standards and make the Z2 Tablet more cumbersome than it needs to be.</p> <p>A big part of the Z2&rsquo;s appeal is its waterproofing, which is now IP58-certified (a slight improvement over the Z) so drops in up to 1.5m of water are now safe. It might be a splashproof cooking companion or a bathtime long-reads tab. Either way it means the Z2 Tablet will be more useful in more rooms of the house, and that&rsquo;s got to be a good thing. Still, with smaller, cheaper tabs here to stay, full-size tablets such as the Z2 need to work to avoid being relegated to a stay-at-home slab.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A classy design let down by big bezels " alt="A classy design let down by big bezels " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-build.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Z2 Tablet&#039;s matte back is a fan of fingerprints " alt="The Z2 Tablet&#039;s matte back is a fan of fingerprints " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-desgin.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Don&#039;t worry, it&#039;s still waterproof " alt="Don&#039;t worry, it&#039;s still waterproof " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-headphone-jack.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Finding the microUSB port can take a while " alt="Finding the microUSB port can take a while " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-flaps.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> This is What We Call a Movie Tab </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A big reason most of us want a big tablet is to give movies and TV shows the minimum space they deserve. And here the Sony shines.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s almost the same screen as the Tablet Z: a 10.1in 1920 x 1200 affair with tons of Sony&rsquo;s display tweaks - X-Reality engine, Triluminous tech and now for the Z2 &ldquo;Live Colour LCD tech&rdquo; for brighter colours. Unlike Samsung and Asus, Sony hasn&rsquo;t made the leap to 2k tablet resolutions yet, which is a shame and a bit of a surprise considering the company&rsquo;s at the forefront of 4K TV design.</p> <p>In the end all you need to know is that Sony&rsquo;s an expert on screens - this one is bright and crisp with none of the viewing angle problems that have marred Xperia phones. The 264ppi <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">iPad Air </a>is sharper for reading text and webpages, with slightly more detail when it comes to video playback, too, but otherwise the Z2 Tablet is every bit the stunner. That&rsquo;s thanks to seriously vivid colours and the kind of brightness and contrast that makes for really punchy pictures. In ultimate terms we&rsquo;d say the iPad Air produces the more realistic colours, but the vibrancy of the Sony is mighty appealing and never jarringly unnatural.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="That Live Colour LCD tech seems to be doing the trick " alt="That Live Colour LCD tech seems to be doing the trick " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-screen.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony doesn&#039;t think Spidey needs a 2k tablet screen just yet " alt="Sony doesn&#039;t think Spidey needs a 2k tablet screen just yet " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-spiderman.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Text looks sharp but the iPad Air is sharper " alt="Text looks sharp but the iPad Air is sharper " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-xperia-Z2-tablet-review-text.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apps for a 10in Sony </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Full-size tablets have to live up to more than just media bingeing potential. How? With apps.</p> <p>Whether it&rsquo;s gorgeous, creative App Store apps designed for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">iPad</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tabpro-84/review">Samsung&rsquo;s huge bundle</a> of productivity freebies, Flipboard-style homescreens and subscriptions for the TabPro range, both greatly expand what you can do with a 10in tab. We&rsquo;re talking anything from manipulating virtual Korg synths to dragging and dropping Samsung files. </p> <p>Samsung overhauled its software offering because Google Play still isn&rsquo;t doing enough for 10in tablets. It&rsquo;s neck and neck for smartphone games and apps across iOS and Android but on tablets, the number of fantastic, optimised Android apps still trails the App Store. And Sony hasn&rsquo;t done enough to bridge the gap. Instead you get an almost untouched version of KitKat with only Sony&rsquo;s own Walkman, Movies, Album and What&rsquo;s New apps, and while that once would have been anathema to Android evangelists, they&rsquo;re too busy mucking about with their cheaper Nexus tabs to pay the Z2 much mind. </p> <p>That&rsquo;s not to say Sony hasn&rsquo;t taken certain steps. There are resizeable, windowed small apps for the likes of Gmail and the browser, which is a nice multi-tasking touch (particularly if you go for the Z2 Tablet&rsquo;s keyboard case) - albeit without quite the range or flexibility of Samsung&rsquo;s rival Multi Window apps. </p> <p>The closest Sony has to a compelling must-have app is the excellent universal remote, plus neat tricks such as Wi-Fi &lsquo;throwing&rsquo; of content to bigger screens. It needs more. We don&rsquo;t mean useless, gimmicky bloatware - the likes of Samsung have grown up enough to choose a few worthwhile additions to KitKat and Sony needs to keep up.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="An excellent universal remote app isn&#039;t enough " alt="An excellent universal remote app isn&#039;t enough " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-icons.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Walkman, Movies and What&#039;s New on the Z2 Tablet homescreen " alt="Walkman, Movies and What&#039;s New on the Z2 Tablet homescreen " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-review-homescreen-1.png?1397639680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performs and performs and performs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Z2 Tablet might not have that one killer feature to make us want to buy this over any other slate. But that doesn&rsquo;t mean it isn&rsquo;t a supremely reliable device in use.</p> <p>As expected, the Snapdragon 801 and 3GB of RAM combo handles everything you can throw at it with ease, from Asphalt 8 to running six small apps on top of the browser. This is a very slick tablet indeed, with high benchmark results to back up the real-world use (33782 on AnTuTu and 2030 on Geekbench 3). While we wouldn&rsquo;t recommend tilting a 10in tab to play racing games, you can hook up a DualShock PS3 controller to get your game on when surroundings allow.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s no need to fear the low percentage icon when using the Z2 Tablet either. Battery life is as good as its predecessor, dropping about 10% an hour of fairly heavy use and lasting just over nine hours in our usual video rundown test (HD video loop, Wi-Fi on, half brightness). That means you&rsquo;ll rarely be reaching for the Stamina mode, a gift from Xperia smartphones, but the power saving function does make a big difference when needed.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s unlikely to be a priority when choosing a tablet but the 8MP rear camera doesn&rsquo;t let the Z2 down. It takes usable if not brilliant snaps - <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z1-compact/review">Sony&rsquo;s smartphones </a>take crisper shots with better exposure but Sony&rsquo;s Superior Auto mode is on hand to change scenes as you go. As it is the Z2 Tablet is a great movie machine, but a tablet costing this much needs to do more, and it&rsquo;s out-worked and out-played by iPads, Samsungs and Transformers.&nbsp;</p> <p>Having said all that, the single-minded approach to media consumption will appeal to many, as will the all-day battery life and waterproof construction, and there&rsquo;s absolutely nothing wrong with that.</p> this year&rsquo;s World Cup in Brazil will be the first ever 4K tournament. Sort of.</p> <p>Out of 32 matches which will take place over 64 glorious days, only three will be shot in 4K. And they won&#39;t be broadcast live.</p> <p>Instead, Sony will be using the captured footage to create an official FIFA-endorsed film, presumably full of highlights from the 4K-captured matches.</p> <p>The matches in question are the final (naturally), the quarter-final and one match from the round of 16, which is set to take place on 28 June.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/esat-dedezade" title="View user profile.">Esat Dedezade</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-announces-4k-coverage-2014-fifa-world-cup-brazil/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-announces-4k-coverage-2014-fifa-world-cup-brazil/news#comments 4K Film and TV Sony TVs Thu, 03 Apr 2014 09:21:03 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1434778 at http://www.stuff.tv Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy TabPro 10.1: the weigh-in http://www.stuff.tv/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-vs-samsung-galaxy-tabpro-101-weigh/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Two top-spec Android tablets - but which one are we most excited by? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy TabPro 10.1: the weigh-in" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy TabPro 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Sony-xperia-z2-tablet-versus-samsung-galaxy-tab-pro-10.1-001.jpg?1396337664" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>A new wave of Android tablets are on the horizon, offering super-high-res screens and more processing oomph than you can shake a Google-powered stick at.</p> <p>We&#39;ll be testing two of them - the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/mwc-2014/sony-xperia-tablet-z2-castor-tablet-specs-leak-ahead-mwc-2014/news" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet</a> and the Samsung Galaxy TabPro 10.1 - very soon, but before we do so, here&#39;s how they stack up against each in pure spec terms.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/tony-horgan" title="View user profile.">Tony Horgan</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Both the Sony and the Samsung are built around a 10.1in screen, but the Galaxy TabPro 10.1 lands an early blow with a resolution of 2560x1600 to the Xperia Z2 Tablet&#39;s 1920x1080. That gives the Samsung a pixel density of 299ppi, whereas the Sony lags behind with a ppi of 224. Or, to put it another way,&nbsp;the Samsung squeezes in 77.7% more pixels than its rival.</p> <p>Of course there&#39;s more to a screen than just pixels alone, and the Xperia Z2 Tablet aims to make up for its slight resolution deficit with a raft of display-enhancing tricks: you get &#39;Live Colour LED&#39; for (supposedly) rich colours, IPS tech for improved viewing angles, &#39;Triluminos&#39; for better lighting and &#39;X-Reality&#39; for sharper images. Frankly, it should also win an award for stupidly named technologies.&nbsp;</p> <p>In our hands-on time with it we were fairly impressed by it though, so while the Galaxy TabPro 10.1 is the clear winner on the numbers alone, we&#39;ll have to reserve judgement on the real-world performance until we&#39;ve tried them both side-by-side.</p> <p><strong>KEY SPECS</strong></p> <p><strong>Sony</strong> 10.1in, 1920x1200 pixels (224ppi)</p> <p><strong>Samsung</strong> 10.1in, 2560x1600 pixels (299ppi)</p> <p><strong>Winner</strong> undeclared for now</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="843" title="The Xperia Z2 Tablet comes packed with screen-enhancing tech" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy TabPro 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-screen_1.jpg?1396337664" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Galaxy TabPro 10.1 has a super-high-res screen" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy TabPro 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SamsungGalaxyTabPro-1_0.jpeg?1396337664" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This is an interesting one. The Sony and Samsung tablets each have a very desireable processor but they&#39;re quite different in their approaches. The Xperia Z2 Tablet is driven by a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor running at a rate of 2.3GHz, assisted by Adreno 330 graphics hardware. The Galaxy TabP 10.1 uses an Exynos 5 Octa processor, which is made up of two quad-core sections, one running at 1.9GHz and the other at 1.3GHz.</p> <p>To simplify that, the Sony has fewer cores but higher processing speeds. Higher processing speeds would be evident in situations where the device was working mainly on a single, intensive job, such as photo editing, or some hardcore music or video processing. However, the Samsung&#39;s additional cores should see improved performance where a number of tasks are being carried out simultaneously (perhaps when there are various apps and widgets open at the same time). Different cores can pick up different tasks and deal with them independently without creating bottlenecks with other jobs in hand &ndash; something that will come in very useful for the TabPro&#39;s &#39;Magazine UX&#39; interface (see below).</p> <p>There are other factors that will affect the overall performance of the two tablets, one of which is the operating system and the tweaks that have been made it by Sony and Samsung for their own tablets. This isn&#39;t a category we can call on numbers alone, so for the time being we&#39;ll have to sit on the fence and give you an update as soon as we can run full back-to-back tests.</p> <p><strong>POWER SPECS</strong></p> <p><strong>Sony</strong> 2.3 GHz Qualcomm 801 quad-core with Adreno 330 graphics</p> <p><strong>Samsung</strong> Exynos 5 Octa (1.9GHz quad-core + 1.3 GHz quad-core)</p> <p><strong>Winner: </strong>undeclared for now</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Inside the Xperia Z2 Tablet there&#039;s a Snapdragon 801 processor" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy TabPro 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony%20Xperia%20Z2%20Tablet_0.jpg?1396337664" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The TabPro 10.1 has an octa-core processor" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Samsung Galaxy TabPro 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SamsungGalaxyTabPro-2.jpeg?1396337664" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This would appear to be almost a dead heat but as we know, there&#39;s more to a camera than its megapixel rating. The Sony also hooks up neatly with a wireless PlayStation controller for hardcore gaming potential.</p> <p>The TabPro 10.1 doesn&#39;t take well to the wet stuff, but it comes with Samsung&#39;s own OS mods and apps, including an interesting &#39;Magazine UX&#39; which carves up the home screen into a number of windows and widgets. You&#39;ll also be able to take advantage of features such as split-screen multi-tasking.</p> <p>However, the TabPro lacks the stylus that you get with Samsung&#39;s Note phablets and tablets, which is a shame as far as we&#39;re concerned. This Sony is wonderfully realistic, serving up vibrant reds, clear blues and inky blacks on its edge-lit LED LCD panel.&nbsp; The clean whites could have a touch more punch, but that&#39;s our only real complaint.&nbsp;Viewing angles are great too - not something that could be said about Sony&#39;s 2013 sets - with colours staying just as vivid as you move to the side.</p> <p>Stick on a Blu-ray and you&#39;ll be treated to a crisp, smooth, detailed picture, and even standard-def TV and DVDs look great. You might want to spend a little time tweaking the settings though - as is usually the case with modern TVs, you&#39;ll get the best results by turning off all of the (usually unnecessary) &#39;Reality Creation&#39; and &#39;noise reduction&#39; modes then starting again.</p> <p>If 3D floats your boat, the W829B is of the active variety and comes with two pairs of specs in the box. You lose a little brightness and might notice a little smearing at times, but overall the picture remains superb in three dimensions.</p> <p>As far as sound goes, the W829B is pretty good compared to most flatscreen TVs. There&#39;s a decent amount of weight to audio, plus there&#39;s a Sound Booster mode which brings voices forward in the mix and a fairly decent surround sound option. You&#39;ll still be far better off with a&nbsp;full 5.1 speaker setup or even a soundbar, of course - but hey, at least Sony&#39;s trying.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ces-2014/best-ces-tvs-youll-want-buy-2014/feature">The best of CES - the TVs you&#39;ll want to buy in 2014</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="717" height="538" title="Sony KDL-50W829B picture quality" alt="Sony KDL-50W829B smart TV review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-50W829B-smart-tv-picture-001.jpg?1395419986" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SMARTER THAN THE AVERAGE SET </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sony&#39;s given its smart TV portal a new lick of paint, and very nice it looks too. It&#39;s also incredibly easy to use and navigate - quite important, that - meaning you&#39;ll spend less time hunting for content and more time watching it.&nbsp;</p> <p>So what&#39;s on offer? Well as with all smart Sony sets, you get Sony&#39;s own&nbsp;Music and Video Unlimited services, and these are helpfully arranged in Movies and Music tabs all of their own. Within these tabs you can preview 30 seconds of a song or watch a film trailer before buying - another nice feature. With Netflix and Amazon Instant/LoveFilm also present, there&#39;s no shortage of things to watch, and if you don&#39;t fancy paying for your viewing, BBC iPlayer, YouTube and Demand 5 are all on board too. No ITV Player or 4oD though, which is a slight shame.</p> <p>Another clever touch is the Discover feature, which monitors what you watch then makes suggestions for other shows you might like, learning over time that yes, you really, really love anything with Ray Mears in it.&nbsp; And then there&#39;s the Live Football Mode, which arrives just in time for the World Cup this June. Select this mode and the set will&nbsp;enhance the crowd noise to supposedly recreate what it&#39;s like actually being in the stadium. Does it work? Kind of. The crowd noise is a little too loud, and it doesn&#39;t come with a dodgy chicken balti pie at half-time. But you do get a feed of&nbsp;football-related videos from YouTube and a FIFA archive. So let&#39;s call it a 1-1 draw.</p> <p>DLNA is included too, and works wirelessly as well as via Ethernet. If you&#39;re streaming full HD films from a laptop or NAS, we&#39;d always recommend going for the wired option, but all the same we&#39;re glad built-in Wi-Fi now comes as standard on the top smart TVs.&nbsp;</p> <p>Control options include a standard remote, which features dedicated buttons for instant access to the apps page, Discover section or Netflix, plus Sony&rsquo;s TV SideView control app. The app is free for both iOS and Android and can be used for pretty much everything you&#39;d need - browsing and selecting channels, flicking through the&nbsp;handy EPG, buying on-demand content and lots more.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-chromecast/review">Google Chromecast review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony KDL-50W829B My Apps" alt="Sony KDL-50W829B smart TV review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-50W829B-smart-tv-apps-002.jpg?1395419986" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="500" height="375" title="Sony KDL-50W829B Music" alt="Sony KDL-50W829B smart TV review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-50W829B-smart-tv-sound-apps-001_0.jpg?1395419986" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="501" height="376" title="Sony KDL-50W829B Movies" alt="Sony KDL-50W829B smart TV review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-50W829B-smart-tv-video-unlimited-001_0.jpg?1395419986" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="499" height="374" title="Sony KDL-50W829B Discover" alt="Sony KDL-50W829B smart TV review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony-50W829B-smart-tv-network-001_0.jpg?1395419986" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> VERDICT </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&#39;d suggested two years ago that a TV this good would be available for&nbsp;less than a grand, you&#39;d have been burnt as a witch. This week the company unveiled its own prototype VR headset, dubbed Project Morpheus. Sony claims to have spent three years working on the upcoming device, which packs a 1080p screen and stereo audio as well as full positional head-tracking.</p> <p>So what did our compadres in the tech and gaming press who got some hands-on time with Morpheus make of it? We&rsquo;ve rounded up all their opinions below.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-tv-video/sony-project-morpheus/4505-6494_7-35873300.html" target="_blank">CNET</a>&rsquo;s Eric Franklin got a chance to don the Morpheus headset and delve into two of Sony&rsquo;s tech demos: <em>Castle</em> and <em>The Deep</em>. The latter casts you as a diver inside a shark cage, which limits movement, but Franklin was reasonably impressed by how Morpheus&rsquo; positional tracking allowed his real-life movements to be translated into the virtual world: &ldquo; You could look down and see your character&#39;s legs and bending both knees caused your avatar to do so as well. At one point I sat in a real-life chair and my avatar looked to be squatting. I could even see my chest from this position. It felt quite immersive.&rdquo;</p> <p>Graphically, he describes <em>The Deep</em> as &ldquo;decent&rdquo;, cautioning that he could see jaggy aliasing on the cage&rsquo;s bars. However: &ldquo;Once the shark made its appearance &hellip; things got a lot more interesting, and there were moments when I had to remind myself that this was only an approximation of real-life.&rdquo; Sounds scarily good.</p> <p>He found the <em>Castle</em> demo, in which you hold a Move controller in each hand, far more enjoyable. Using these controllers to punch or grab an empty suit of armour in a courtyard, Franklin &ldquo;was particularly impressed by the system&#39;s ability to track how fast and therefore how hard I was punching the suit.&rdquo;</p> <p>In terms of build and comfort, Franklin says the headset is &ldquo;fairly light&rdquo; and had a better focal point than the Oculus Rift, allowing the screen to be positioned further from the wearer&rsquo;s eyes. He did, however, find it got sweaty inside more quickly than the Rift.</p> <p>Overall he was impressed with his brief hands-on but, like a lot of people, feels that VR gaming will succeed or fail based on the software available. These limited tech demos are a fun diversion&nbsp;&ndash; but truly compelling games are a must.</p> <p><em>Image credit: CNET</em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="610" height="458" title="CNET&#039;s Eric Franklin wearing Project Morpheus" alt="CNET&#039;s Eric Franklin wearing Project Morpheus" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Sony_Project_Morpheus_35873300-2852-006_610x458.jpg?1396315747" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Get up, stand up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Over at <a href="http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/19/5526966/project-morpheus-sonys-playstation-4-virtual-reality-helmet-is-much" target="_blank">Polygon</a>, Ben Kuchera seemed a lot more impressed by Morpheus. He did caution that the fit of the headset allowed some light to bleed in from under the screen and that the &ldquo;less than perfect&rdquo; field of view meant black bars were visible on the left and right sides. He also found the Move control of the <em>Castle</em> demo problematic, because while when it works it&rsquo;s great, as soon as there&rsquo;s a glitch and &ldquo;your hand jumps five feet in the wrong direction [it] takes you completely out of the experience, and can almost make you sick.&rdquo;</p> <p>That said, he feels like these things can be fixed in the run-up to launch, and was mighty impressed by Morpheus on the whole: &ldquo;Sony has nailed the hard parts of virtual reality, and now it&#39;s just a matter of finishing the hardware and shoring up software support. Based on these early demos, they&#39;re onto something special.&rdquo; He also praised the fact that both demos encouraged the player to stand up and move around freely, whereas Oculus Rift demos thus far are generally a sit-down experience.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="http://kotaku.com/we-just-tried-sonys-ps4-virtual-reality-headset-we-l-1547417858" target="_blank">Kotaku</a>&rsquo;s Kirk Hamilton was also impressed by the headset, saying that it feels similar to the Oculus Rift (a good thing) and that it fitted quite well even over his glasses. There&#39;s a small amount of motion blur, but it&#39;s not as bad as say, the first Oculus HD prototype. I expect it to be gone on whatever prototype Sony has going six or so months from now.&rdquo;</p> <p>Connors also delves into the integration of the PS Move controller in detail, calling it Morpheus&rsquo; &ldquo;biggest advantage, and most serious weakness&rdquo;. He says the glitches with Move suggest it still needs a lot of work, but that&rsquo;s forgiveable in a prototype and overall it&rsquo;s &ldquo;wholly better than I expected it to be&rdquo;.</p> <p>There seems to be a clear consensus concerning Project Morpheus: it&rsquo;s not perfect but for a work-in-progress prototype it&rsquo;s very impressive indeed. There are kinks that need to be ironed out &ndash; but it seems that Sony&rsquo;s work in VR has got it to a point where its hardware is on par with (or very close to) Oculus Rift. And that&rsquo;s no mean feat.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/oculus-rift/review" target="_blank">Oculus Rift preview</a></strong></p> <p><em>Image credit: The Escapist</em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1534" height="1269" title="The Escapist&#039;s Devin Connors plays the Castle demo" alt="The Escapist&#039;s Devin Connors plays the Castle demo" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/698609.jpg?1396315747" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Heads-on with Sony&#039;s Project Morpheus </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-project-morpheus-vr-headset-hands-review-round/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Gaming Sony Thu, 20 Mar 2014 16:22:59 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1434053 at http://www.stuff.tv Powers is the PlayStation 4's first exclusive TV series http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/powers-playstation-4s-first-exclusive-tv-series/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Bendis and Oeming’s graphic novel is the first made-for-PS4 series, taking on Netflix and iPlayer at their own games </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="567" height="425" title="Powers is the PlayStation 4&#039;s first exclusive TV series" alt="Powers is the PlayStation 4&#039;s first exclusive TV series" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/powers.jpg?1395314707" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>The PlayStation Network is already offering films and TV shows to rent and buy in certain regions, but soon it&rsquo;ll be offering it&rsquo;s own content just like Netflix with House of Cards.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/nigel-yap-0" title="View user profile.">Nigel Yap</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Moving beyond gamers </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As the first project to offer original non-game content for the PlayStation 4, the series is part of Sony&rsquo;s plan to move the PlayStation 4 beyond its core gaming crowd - a strategy that worked wonders with the PS3&#39;s Blu-ray-playing and DLNA capabilities, which meant many bought the console as a media player first and a games machine second.&nbsp;</p> <p>There is one key difference this time around, though - the PS3 was the cheapest Blu-ray player of its time, while the PS4 is most definitely not the cheapest media streamer. The improved version that we played with at CES earlier this year brought faster refresh rates and higher resolution screens to the table, and we felt absolutely fine (despite the questionable buffet shrimp cocktails we munched on beforehand).</p> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/face-review-oculus-rift-crystal-cove/feature" target="_blank">Oculus Rift Crystal Cove prototype</a> was even better, pushing VR technology even further by throwing head tracking into the mix for an even more natural virtual experience.</p> <p>If Sony&#39;s VR headset is better than that, then we really are in for a treat.</p> <p>This isn&#39;t the first time Sony&#39;s dabbled in screen-to-eyeball headgear. Its personal 3D viewer which was released a couple of years ago offers twin full HD OLED displays with 5.1 virtual surround sound for enjoying movies, but it wasn&#39;t built with gaming in mind.</p> <p>At &pound;1300, it costs more than both next-gen consoles combined, so we&rsquo;re praying to the gaming gods that Sony&#39;s upcoming headset will go easy on our wallets.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s unclear at this stage whether or not the VR headset will only work with the PS4, but we haven&rsquo;t got too long to go before all is officially revealed, so stay tuned.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/face-review-oculus-rift-crystal-cove/feature" target="_blank">Face-on review: Oculus Rift Crystal Cove, a bona fide VR revolution</a></strong></p> <p>[<a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/sonys-vr-tech-will-be-revealed-at-gdc-and-it-represents-virtual-reality-gamings-greatest-hope/" target="_blank">Edge</a> via <a href="http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/127860-sony-reportedly-set-to-reveal-oculus-rift-like-vr-headset-next-week" target="_blank">Pocket Lint</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Sony set to reveal an Oculus Rift-like VR gaming headset at GDC next week" alt="Sony set to reveal an Oculus Rift-like VR gaming headset at GDC next week" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/oculus-rift-crystal-cove-01%20%281%29.jpg?1394760907" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony-set-reveal-oculus-rift-vr-gaming-headset-gdc-next-week/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sony-set-reveal-oculus-rift-vr-gaming-headset-gdc-next-week/news#comments Gaming GDC 2014 PlayStation 4 Sony Thu, 13 Mar 2014 12:17:55 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1433664 at http://www.stuff.tv
