Well, if you have a Nest Learning Thermostat, you&rsquo;ll soon be able to do that via Google. Droid-Life discovered that if you tell Google to set the temperature via voice commands, it&rsquo;ll try to connect to your Nest - but currently fail.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s because you need to link your thermostat to your Google account and set permissions, and the pages needed to complete that process aren&rsquo;t all online quite yet. But at least part of the process is there, and there will be two options: one for manually setting the temperature, and another that sets the temperature based on your proximity to home (with a Now card to alert you).</p> <p>The feature was promised to debut this autumn, but hopefully we at least see it before the year&rsquo;s up. Nest thermostats are already very helpful devices, but being able to alter the temperature without even getting up off the sofa? Now that&rsquo;s some next-level comfort coming our way.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.droid-life.com/2014/12/12/google-app-now-one-step-from-being-able-to-control-nest">Droid-Life</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/3ds/fully-charged-tesla-s-model-x-delayed-another-classic-zelda-being-remade-3ds-and-nest-learning-t">The Nest Learning Thermostat gets even smarter</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PlayStation Plus is totally worth it </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Push Square performed an analysis of all of the free games given to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/explore/playstation-plus/">PlayStation Plus</a>&nbsp;subscribers during 2014, and it looks like everything tallied up to a value of almost &pound;960 worth of downloads across PlayStation 4, PS3, and Vita. All for &pound;40 yearly. And the Metacritic review average of those freebies is quite strong at 78.</p> <p>In response, Polygon dug into what Microsoft&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/live/games-with-gold">Games with Gold</a>&nbsp;promo offered Xbox Live Gold subscribers last year, and that total came out to US$584, or about &pound;372. Bit of a difference, sure, but note that Microsoft has one fewer active Xbox platform, and only began giving away Xbox One titles in June. The Metacritic ranking? Also a sterling 78.</p> <p>Whatever your platform, there&rsquo;s real value to being a subscriber if you regularly take advantage of the free games (and, of course, play them). And that&rsquo;s in addition to other discounts, plus access to online multiplayer on both platforms. And there&rsquo;s a big narrative hint at the end, so watch the whole 15 minutes.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/12/06/uncharted-4-a-thiefs-end-first-gameplay/">PlayStation.Blog</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/3ds/25-most-anticipated-games-2015/feature">The 25 most anticipated games of 2015</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Ow2cL-pp6p8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Amazon getting into takeaway meals </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It increasingly seems like Amazon wants to have its fingers in just about anything, and the company certainly has the money and scale to make it happen. The game in question is<em> Bloodborne</em> and it&rsquo;s every bit as intimidating a prospect as either <em>Demon&rsquo;s Souls</em> or <em>Dark Souls</em>. </p> <p>Interestingly enough, it also throws its net wide enough to entice players who were put off by the eye-watering difficulty of its predecessors without sacrificing an iota of challenge. </p> <p>Sound impossible? There&rsquo;s a lot in <em>Bloodborne</em> that <em>Dark Souls</em> fans will find familiar. </p> <p>Players have a heavy and light attack mapped to the right triggers, a dodge roll mapped to the circle button and a quick-heal mapped to the triangle button. There&rsquo;s a list of gestures in the menu system, the map you walk through is littered with notes from the developers and other players &ndash; some helpful, some not &ndash; and you can see the ghosts of other players at certain points and where they met their untimely demises. Oh, and the checkpoint system is eye-wateringly unforgiving. </p> <p>The key to surviving in<em> Bloodborne</em>, as was the case in both<em> Demon&rsquo;s Souls</em> and <em>Dark Souls</em>, is to treat every monster you face with respect. Every last one of them is capable of killing you outright unless you&#39;re careful. It behooves you to also watch your enemies, learn their attack and defense animations and then look for an opening to exploit. Wading into a pack of enemies or assuming that a large lumbering beast can&rsquo;t move with astonishing speed is the easiest way to get killed &ndash; and once you&#39;re dead, all the enemies you&#39;ve managed to destroy become unhelpfully reanimated.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation/25-best-playstation-games-ever/feature">The 25 best PlayStation games ever</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/XfYyJtyLf0o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="What, you expected frolicking lamps?" alt="Bloodborne hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bloodborne-playstation-4-02.jpg?1417897556" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> TWO-HANDED ATTACK </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><em>Bloodborne</em>, though, has a couple of new kinks in its gameplay. You can dual- wield weapons &ndash; ranged and melee &ndash; and some of them have two settings. The wicked looking scythe the protagonist carried in the demo, for example, could be extended with a flick of the L1 button, granting the player extended attacks. </p> <p>You can also hold down the R2 button for a power-up attack, although this should be used sparingly because it leaves you rather defenceless for what can prove to be precious seconds. </p> <p>Combat rewards those who regularly mix things up. Fire a blunderbuss at an oncoming foe and it&rsquo;ll momentarily stagger, for example, leaving it open for a follow-up with melee. It&rsquo;s also possible to switch between weapons swiftly by tapping right and left on the D-Pad; run out of bullets and you can swap out your firearm for a torch with which to light up your enemies. </p> <p>You&#39;re also able to regain lost health if you maintain your attacks; <em>Bloodborne</em> offers you a brief window in which every single successful strike on an enemy refills your health bar. You&#39;ll never fully replenish your health with a successful counter attack, but you&#39;ll keep the reaper at bay and be in a better position to hang on to your all important blood vials (health potions).&nbsp;</p> <p>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/dragon-age-inquisition/review">Dragon Age: Inquisition review</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Out of ammo? You work your way through eight different characters trapped in a cabin in the mountains hunted by a psychotic antagonist in a clown-mask. Over the time it takes to complete the game, all eight characters can die and all eight can live. Whether or not they survive is down to the choice you make on their behalf. </p> <p>Sounds like gold, right? In reality this isn&rsquo;t the case and that&#39;s mainly down to the game&rsquo;s mechanics, which offer you timed-response interaction with whatever&rsquo;s going on around you. </p> <p>A lot of the time you&#39;re expected to react to immediate threats &ndash; being chased by a psychotic, for example; would you rather run or hide under a bed &ndash; and this lends <em>Until Dawn</em> a rather &lsquo;trial-and-error&rsquo; feeling. It&rsquo;s like playing a rather badly designed platformer with very bloody stakes. </p> <p>The developers would probably posit that the fact you can potentially save all eight characters &ndash; or lose them &ndash; makes this comparison rather facile. Once a character is dead, you can&rsquo;t reload a save &ndash; the story just carries on from that point. That may be true, but it wasn&rsquo;t backed up by the demo at the Sony showcase. After having played it through three times, <em>Stuff </em>can report that the protagonist we controlled came to a sticky end, regardless of how we tried to progress.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation/25-best-playstation-games-ever/feature">The 25 best PlayStation games ever</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Spooky" alt="Until Dawn hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/until-dawn-playstation-4-02.jpg?1417897472" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The setting of the game and the nature of the player&rsquo;s interaction don&rsquo;t complement each other. Just 12,300 units are being made, so it&rsquo;ll be super hard to come by. But no matter which kind of PS4 you have, you can at least give it a little throwback flair.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s thanks to the free new 20th anniversary theme on the PlayStation Store, which is available for PS4 as well as PlayStation 3 and Vita. It adds a grey colour scheme and new icons, along with floating 3D controller button logos, but the absolute best part is the addition of the PSone&rsquo;s startup music once you sign in. And it&#39;ll only get better as the tech advances and broadband connections improve worldwide.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="PlayStation Now" alt="PlayStation at 20: What&#039;s next for PlayStation?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/playstation%20now%20hands-on_0.JPG?1417658891" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PlayStation 5 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So what does that mean for the PlayStation 5? It&#39;s entirely possible that the next PlayStation console won&#39;t be a full-fledged console at all &ndash; at least not in the traditional sense, with a hefty GPU, a disc drive, and a large heap of plastic and silicon filling your entertainment centre.</p> <p>It could be a microconsole like the new <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/sony-playstation-tv/review">PlayStation TV</a>, with just enough horsepower included to stream games over the internet from a very powerful server. Such a device would be more affordable out of the gate and much smaller; and you wouldn&#39;t have to worry about upgrading it in a few years to run the latest and greatest new games around.</p> <p>Except I don&#39;t actually expect that to happen with the PlayStation 5. Right now, the PlayStation 4 is one of Sony&#39;s biggest profit drivers, and that&#39;s in part because they stuck with a simple message: it&#39;s a gaming machine, like the gaming machines in the past, and we&#39;re not going to overload it with bundled peripherals or limit what you can do with your purchased content.</p> <p>It was a stark contrast to Microsoft&#39;s initial approach with the Xbox One, which changed after fan backlash. Not only is the PS4 leading the current console generation, but it&#39;s also keeping Sony viable as the company&#39;s smartphone and TV sales diminish.</p> <p>As such, I expect that the PlayStation 5 will be a traditional games console in the way that we know it now: a box and a controller, plugged into your TV and ready to entertain. But probably without a disc drive. Do you really think a PlayStation launching in 2020 or so will require optical discs? It seems unlikely.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation/playstation-20-how-playstation-changed-gaming/feature">PlayStation at 20 - how the PlayStation changed gaming</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wbL0kVqyEao" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="A PlayStation microconsole for PS5?" alt="PlayStation at 20: What&#039;s next for PlayStation?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/playstation-tv_1.jpg?1417658891" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PlayStation everywhere </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Doesn&#39;t making a traditional PS5 dispel the need for the cloud? Not at all: the PlayStation 5 has to be a traditional games console to appease hardcore fans that want the best possible gaming experience. It&#39;ll run games locally on its own hardware, surely at 4K or 8K whatever insane resolution we consider to be the benchmark in five or six years.</p> <p>Cloud-powered gaming will be for everyone else: people with smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and microconsoles &ndash; even PCs and set-top boxes. Before long, nearly any decent device with a screen or that can plug into a screen will be able to run powerful console games via cloud streaming, and I expect that Sony will embrace that as much as possible.</p> <p>Hardcore gamers will still get the best performance and newest games on PS5, but many more people can get something close to that without an expensive barrier to entry. It&#39;s the reason why I&#39;d be surprised if Sony bothers making another dedicated gaming handheld after the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pch-2000/playstation-vita-slim/review">PlayStation Vita</a>.</p> <p>Sony won&#39;t outright admit it, but the company has given up on growing the platform: first-party studios aren&#39;t making AAA-style games for it any more, and third-party developers aren&#39;t putting their notable franchises on it.</p> <p>Right now, it has value as a companion device for PS4 owners and as another destination for cross-platform games &ndash; particularly scrappy indie titles. Which is great, but with smartphones and tablets so common now, you don&#39;t need a dedicated handheld device just to run games that are found on your console back home. Your phone and tablet will accomplish those feats in the future.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OByNPvxOgAQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Bye bye PS Vita" alt="PlayStation at 20: What&#039;s next for PlayStation?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC03074_1.JPG?1417658891" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Virtually real </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>But what about VR? Sony has shown off its <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/head-hands-and-eyes-sony-s-project-morpheus/feature">Project Morpheus</a> headset &ndash; a console-powered rival to the Oculus Rift &ndash; for much of this year without committing to hard details. For now, it&#39;s not even necessarily confirmed for release. But with the rising fervor over VR experiences, I expect that it will debut by the end of 2015.</p> <p>Still, I don&#39;t sense that there will be such a mainstream push away from TV-based games that Project Morpheus (or whatever it&#39;s ultimately called) will be the default, mandatory way to experience the PlayStation 5. It&#39;s still likely to be too expensive to force on everyone, and some won&#39;t want that kind of deep dive immersion.</p> <p>VR can be amazing, but it&#39;s not for everyone. Not soon, at least. Instead, I see it as one of the PS5&#39;s potential biggest perks: experience the next generation of virtual reality, only on PlayStation 5. You won&#39;t get that kind of experience via the cloud on your tablet or microconsole, and it&#39;s bound to be much more advanced than what will be possible on PS4 over the next few years.</p> <p>In other words, there may not be one linear path ahead for PlayStation. It won&#39;t be as simple as owning the latest console and that&#39;s that. With cloud-powered gaming making the console less of a necessity and virtual reality coming up quickly on the horizon, I expect more ways to play and more options ahead.</p> <p>And as long as PlayStation keeps powering Sony&#39;s bottom line, the company is sure to explore all of those exciting possibilities. Here&#39;s to another 20 years of fun.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation/25-best-playstation-games-ever/feature">PlayStation at 20 - the 25 best PlayStation games ever</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/MAF1aG5sQ20" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Project Morpheus" alt="PlayStation at 20: What&#039;s next for PlayStation?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-project-morpheus-hands-on-review-001_1.jpg?1417658891" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation/playstation-20-whats-next-playstation/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/playstation/playstation-20-whats-next-playstation/feature#comments Games consoles Gaming PlayStation Sony Wed, 03 Dec 2014 13:06:10 +0000 Marc McLaren 1454370 at http://www.stuff.tv PlayStation at 20: How the PlayStation changed gaming http://www.stuff.tv/playstation/playstation-20-how-playstation-changed-gaming/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> As the original PlayStation turns 20, we look back at its era-defining impact on the world </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Happy birthday, Sony PlayStation" alt="PlayStation at 20: How the PlayStation changed gaming" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/playstation-at-20-psx-console_0.jpg?1417657719" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>In the early &rsquo;90s gaming was for kids. Games were a hobby you grew out of. Something to be banished to the attic with Action Mans and Care Bears in your teens. But then the PlayStation arrived and things would never be the same again. </p> <p>Sony&rsquo;s first console, which turns 20 today, was nothing short of game changing. The PlayStation had it all - revolutionary hardware, smart marketing and groundbreaking games. </p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/tristan-donovan" title="View user profile.">Tristan Donovan</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> An inauspicious start </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Not that anyone was sure Sony&rsquo;s gamble on games would pay off back in 1994. Sony was an upstart and many, including some within the business, wondered if the company knew what it was doing.</p> <p>There were good reasons to be doubtful.</p> <p>Sony&rsquo;s contribution to games pre-PlayStation had largely consisted of publishing consistently terrible games based on action movies such as <em>Cliffhanger</em>. What&rsquo;s more, Sony never intended to make a console.</p> <p>The path to PlayStation began in 1989, when Nintendo asked Sony to help it make a CD-ROM version of its Super NES console. All went well until Nintendo got all paranoid about Sony using the deal as a stepping stone to getting into the console business. So the day after the Super NES CD project was revealed in 1991, Nintendo announced it was dumping Sony for Philips.</p> <p>Furious at the humiliation, Sony decided to get revenge by, er, making its own console.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1rRrjvCCXvg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sound and vision </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>From the off the PlayStation had technology on its side. The console was a beast, offering state-of-the-art 3D graphics and CD storage. For a gaming generation raised on a 2D diet of <em>Sensible Soccer</em>, <em>Mario</em> and <em>Sonic</em>, the PlayStation&rsquo;s visuals were jaw-dropping - a feature rammed home by Sony&rsquo;s T. Rex demo, a demo so good it doesn&rsquo;t look too shabby even now.&nbsp;</p> <p>The eye candy was backed up with top-notch audio thanks to the CD drive, which let game makers use recorded music instead of computer- generated chip tunes.</p> <p>And while Sony made a monster bit of kit, its main rivals dropped the ball.</p> <p>Sega designed its Saturn console as a 2D powerhouse before hurriedly tacking on 3D capabilities after getting the jitters about what Sony was promising. The result was a complex console that even Sega&rsquo;s own developers admitted that only the very best game makers would be able to use well.</p> <p>Nintendo, meanwhile, went 3D but refused to join the CD age. Instead it stuck with game cartridges, a move that limited the Nintendo 64&rsquo;s sonics and left N64 owners paying around &pound;20 more per game than their PlayStation-owning pals.</p> <p>The PlayStation&rsquo;s 3D and CD advantages were enough to persuade&nbsp;<em>Final Fantasy</em>&nbsp;creators Square to join Team Sony after years of loyalty to Nintendo. And, armed with Sony&rsquo;s tech, Square made&nbsp;<em>Final Fantasy VII</em>&nbsp;- the first Japanese role-playing game to make it big in the west.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YCtZIlolG6w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> In control </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Ergonomically terrific, Sony&rsquo;s hardware innovation didn&rsquo;t end with what was in the PlayStation either, for it also reinvented the game controller.</p> <p>Prior to the PlayStation, ergonomic game controllers were like unicorns. Game pads meant flat plastic slabs that threatened to turn your mitts into rigid claws if you played too long. Or - if you were unlucky enough to find an Atari Jaguar under the Christmas tree - a telephone keypad that also turned your hands into claws but did it with extra ugliness. </p> <p>The PlayStation controller was different: it was a three-dimensional object designed with human hands in mind. Goodbye cramp, hello extra playtime. </p> <p>Things got even better in 1997 when Sony launched the DualShock, a new version with twin analogue sticks and vibration. Nintendo&rsquo;s response? A three-pronged plastic fork that seemed tailor-made for octopii. Tellingly, it&rsquo;s the PlayStation controllers that became the blueprint for most of the gamepads that followed.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation/playstation-20-whats-next-playstation/feature">PlayStation at 20 - What&#39;s next for PlayStation?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The original PlayStation controller..." alt="PlayStation at 20: How the PlayStation changed gaming" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/playstation-at-20-Original-controller.jpg?1417657719" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="...and the DualShock" alt="PlayStation at 20: How the PlayStation changed gaming" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/playstation-at-20-DualShock.jpg?1417657719" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Games galore </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So the PlayStation had the hardware - but that wouldn&rsquo;t have mattered a jot without great games. Until now. Let&rsquo;s start with the &lsquo;big&rsquo; 4.7in screen. It&rsquo;s not nearly as sharp as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a> (or the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-x-2014/review">Moto X </a>or <a href="http://site:stuff.tv sony xperia z3">Xperia Z3</a>). And a Full HD screen would be joint-first on our tweak list.&nbsp; But in every other way it&rsquo;s top-class and the pixels really do look like they&rsquo;re sitting on the glass.</p> <p>A bigger, Android-sized screen means a bigger, Android-sized body. But this 6.9mm-thick design with a seamless all-metal back (in gold, silver or black) and glossy front outclasses all bar the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One M8</a>. It&rsquo;s close to flawless. Even iOS 8 is as free and easy as Apple is likely to get. with app extensions which open up core functionalities to devs and widgets popping up in notifications.</p> <p>Elsewhere, the iPhone&rsquo;s already smooth performance gets another boost thanks to an A8 chip, the 8MP camera is faster and better than ever, and battery life increases slightly if not dramatically (that&rsquo;s saved for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">5.5in iPhone 6 Plus</a>).</p> <p>This is still Apple. It&rsquo;s still the most expensive option. Then there&rsquo;s the friendliness of iOS, the earliest, prettiest apps, the big Apple Pay partnerships. Maybe a bit too slim &ndash; the camera lens protrudes from the back of the phone, like the top of&nbsp;a tiny periscope, and we can&rsquo;t help lusting after a slightly chunkier iPhone with room for a bigger battery unit. It&rsquo;s not capable of the manual heights of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Xperia Z3</a> but it is designed around how we take photos. The new exposure slider is genius, low-light pics look superb &ndash; better even than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">G3&rsquo;s efforts</a> &ndash; and auto HDR is brilliant. The<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review"> 5.2in Z3</a> is good for one and a half to two days on a single charge. Standby is superb, there&rsquo;s every level of battery-saving mode imaginable and the Z3 lasts a whopping 13 hours 55 minutes on our HD video loop&nbsp;test &ndash; the best result here. </p> <p>Stamina is also the reason Sony has stuck with a 1080p screen rather than going 2K like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>. The screen is now 20% brighter and just as terrific at reproducing colours as the Z2. Zero corners have been cut. The 20.7MP camera remains one for enthusiasts with a new wide angle G lens, up to ISO 12800 in manual, and SteadyShot stabilisation for video. </p> <p>And overall performance is flawless, from fast downloads to running small apps smoothly.</p> <p>That doesn&rsquo;t mean it&rsquo;s as lovely to live with as others here. The design has improved, with curved sides and a skinnier, 11g lighter build than the Z2, but it&rsquo;s still not the most ergonomic big phone.</p> <p>There are little niggles here and there too: from low volume levels with headphones to Sony pushing its subscription services. Sony&#39;s unobtrusive front-facing stereo speakers are clear and loud though when game sound effects are on full blast, you&#39;ll really feel the vibrations. </p> <p>Ultimately, the Z3 has more specialist tricks than its rivals &ndash; hi-res audio and PS4 streaming &ndash; so it should be on every smartphone shortlist.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3-compact/review">Sony Xperia Z3 Compact review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/xperiaz3-ross-1_0.jpg?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony Xperia Z3 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 5.2in IPS, 1920x1080 (424ppi)&nbsp;<br />Processor: Quad-core Snapdragon 801 @ 2.5GHz<br />Cameras: 20.7MP rear, 2.2MP front<br />Storage: 16GB, 32GB (expandable)&nbsp;<br />Battery: 3100mAh<br />Dimensions: 146 x 72 x 7.3mm, 152g&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Details </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Design - no rice bag required 8/10</strong><br />At first glance this looks like the early-2014 Xperia Z2. No hype. No queues around the block. And yet, this is one of the best Androids ever made.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s just as much to love about what Motorola has designed and refined as what it has left alone. This phone is all about making Google&rsquo;s powerful services constantly available and useful. Apart from a few extremely useful, forward-thinking apps (which are helpfully bundled together) this is pretty much pure Android KitKat. You choose what to set up. And you can&rsquo;t get faster than this &ndash; opening apps, browsing, messaging &ndash; there&rsquo;s zero lag.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s no plain Nexus, though. You could hammer a nail in with the sleek, solid aluminium build and it&rsquo;s the most customisable phone on the planet thanks to Moto Maker. The bright 5.2in 1080p AMOLED screen is gorgeous, with superb viewing angles, vivid colours and deep blacks. Plus Moto&rsquo;s Attentive Display sensors turn it off when you&rsquo;re not looking, helping the 2300mAh battery to comfortably last all day long.</p> <p>Is it perfect? Is anything? Its non-expandable storage maxes out at 32GB, and if photography is your top priority some rivals make more sense. It&rsquo;s worth noting that the regular black resin model is a steal but other materials cost more. This could be the first 4.7in-plus phone smaller hands find manageable. It&rsquo;s perfectly balanced and buttons are easy to reach on the right-hand edge &ndash; the power button is textured so you can identify it. The microUSB and nanoSIM slots are top and bottom, leaving the tapered sides clutter-free.</p> <p>Unlike the cheaper <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-g/best-cheap-smartphone-you-can-buy/feature">Moto G</a>, the X oddly doesn&#39;t have stereo speakers; but the front-facing single speaker is clear and loud enough for a bit of grime on the bus.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Screen - strikes a good punch 9/10</strong><br />The Moto X&rsquo;s display is on the punchier end of the spectrum, without looking too alien, but the downside of AMOLED colours is that from certain angles whites can look a bit yellow. It&rsquo;s 424ppi, so text&nbsp;looks seriously smooth.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>OS and Apps - good night, dear phone 10/10&nbsp;</strong><br />Motorola&rsquo;s always-on sensors, controls and software have really come into their own. Our favourite is the addictive, battery-saving Moto Display, showing hidden monochrome notifications on the lockscreen. Using IR sensors, the phone recognises when your hand approaches it and triggers&nbsp;up to three icons. Elsewhere, you can set up modes that&nbsp;can be turned on and off via natural commands such as &ldquo;Good night&rdquo;. Speaking of voice control, it&rsquo;s always-on, plus &ldquo;OK Google&rdquo; can be swapped for any custom phrase.&nbsp;&nbsp; <p><strong>Camera - considerate flasher 8/10&nbsp;</strong><br />A huge improvement over the first Moto, this 13MP cam takes detailed shots in good light and smooth 1080p video. Both the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review">iPhone</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a> are faster and more capable in low light &ndash; though the X&rsquo;s new ring flash is slightly kinder to faces.&nbsp; The Moto&#39;s sensors let you wave to silence calls and alarms and twist your wrist twice to launch the camera - ideal for keeping your eyes on the scene.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-x-2014/review">Moto X review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorola-moto-x-hi-res.png?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="3000" height="2000" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorola-moto-x-detail-1.jpg?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="3000" height="2000" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorola-moto-x-review-detail-2.jpg?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 4. This style arrives as a metal band around the Alpha and is a sign of things
to come &ndash; the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Note 4 </a>has already followed suit. The flat aluminium rim makes the Alpha feel cool and hard, where previous all-plastic Galaxys felt clammy. Edges are bevelled and a little sharp and the shape seems closer to an iPhone 5s than any Android. Most importantly, it feels solid.</p> <p>The 4.7in AMOLED display isn&rsquo;t the sharpest but it&rsquo;s bright (really very bright) with searingly vivid colours (which, thankfully, you can tone down) and brilliantly deep blacks. The home button doubles up as a finger scanner, there are tons of extras such as an Ultra Power Saving mode and the 12MP rear cam shoots consistently great snaps.</p> <p>Performance is lickety-split and software lag has been tightened up.Battery life is simply good, nothing more. The Alpha lasts a day of regular use or a respectable 10 hours on our 720p video rundown. There&rsquo;s no microSD

And nothing&rsquo;s changed. Since then the likes of the iPhone 6 and Moto X have caught up but not surpassed the LG on paper &ndash; and the G3 has even dropped in price.</p> <p>Since the 2K screen on the G3 was announced, no-one but maverick Chinese phone-maker Oppo has matched the resolution, with Sony choosing battery life over pixels. After months with the G3, would we take a 1080p screen for more than a day&rsquo;s battery? Probably, if the superb display tech remained and stamina could match the Xperia Z3.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s the biggest screen here at 5.5in but, unlike the iPhone 6 Plus, the expertly engineered body still feels manageable for all but the smallest of hands. It&rsquo;s not jaw-droppingly beautiful but it is practical.</p> <p>Fast, accurate and reliable, the 13MP cam shouldn&rsquo;t feel ashamed that the new iPhone snaps better pics of faces in low light. It&rsquo;s still one of the sharpest shooters around. There&rsquo;s still very little lag around Android &ndash; the Snapdragon 801 is holding up well &ndash; but the Moto X is milliseconds faster at day-to-day tasks.</p> <p>Is it as much of a joy to live with as sleeker, more intuitive rivals? Not quite. But the G3 remains a fantastically future-proof choice and will continue to grace out Top 10 list for some time.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G3%20Main_0_0_6.jpg?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> LG G3 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 5.5in 2560 x 1440 (534ppi) IPS<br />Processor: Quad-core Snapdragon 801 @ 2.5GHz&nbsp;<br />Cameras: 13MP rear, 2MP front<br />Storage: 16GB, 32GB (expandable)&nbsp;<br />Battery: 3000mAh<br />Dimensions: 146 x 75 x 8.9mm, 149g&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-11"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Details </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Design - faux metal but manageable - 9/10</strong><br />Although the overall size of the G3 is manageable with well positioned buttons, we&rsquo;re less enamoured with the faux metal now we&rsquo;ve fondled both the iPhone and the Moto X&rsquo;s leather and wood options. Apart from the Sony, the G3 is the only smartphone on this test with a microSD slot - making it an especially good deal when compared to, say, a 128GB (and &pound;700) iPhone 6.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Screen - double-tap to wake 10/10</strong><br />The 5.5in screen seems massive at first but you&rsquo;ll soon forget. Double-tap to wake becomes second nature. Sharp enough to read e-books, it has a cool, natural colour palette for movies and only the Apple has better contrast. Doubts about 2K? The G3, like all the phones here apart from the Xperia Z3, needs charging every night. Some global models come with built-in wireless charging, otherwise buy a Quick Circle case to add this functionality.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Camera - smile! Keep smiling! 9/10</strong><br />The G3 takes great images in low light but using the flash on the go isn&rsquo;t very practical. It blinds your subjects and takes an awkwardly long time. If people move because they get bored, that makes for blurry pics.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>OS and Apps - third-party switch? 9/10</strong><br />LG&rsquo;s Android skin has improved a lot since the G2 but it&rsquo;s still not our favourite. In fact, you&rsquo;ll be tempted to swap it.
