The two combine to make it perfectly feasible to record incredibly distant objects or scenes without a tripod. The intelligence of the image stabilisation comes into play when you start panning and tracking fast-moving objects in the distance. Many rivals fall at this hurdle, correcting their image stabilisation in a series of painfully visible jerks, but the PJ530 remains calm and unflustered, seemingly locked onto its target.</p> <p>It&#39;s worth pushing up beyond the 30x optical zoom to the &quot;extended&quot; 60x zoom limit if you need to, even if it&#39;s only momentarily. Firstly, the virtual surround sound isn&rsquo;t that good. You get a decent sense of audio coming from around you but it messes around too much and makes everything feel unnatural. It then handles Dolby Digital signals and sends them wirelessly to the headset in proper surround sound. It works with Xbox 360 as well as PS4 and PS3 - but not Vita, mind.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re yet to hear a pair of headphones that truly recreate a 5.1 home cinema experience, and the PX4 doesn&rsquo;t buck the trend. But it&rsquo;s not far off, and you do get an extra level of immersion in game worlds, while more accurate placement of effects such as footsteps can give you a competitive edge.</p> <p>You do still need to use a cable between the headset and controller, which is a slight shame, but for crisp, dynamic sound that won&rsquo;t wake the neighbours, the PX4 is currently hard to beat.</p> <p><strong>Stuff says ★★★★★ </strong></p> <p><strong>An impressive headset for hardcore gamers</strong></p> <p><strong><a href="http://www.ebuyer.com/610627-turtle-beach-earforce-px4-ps3-4-xbox-360-gaming-headset-tbs-3276-02?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=products&amp;gclid=CNX8wvuYuL8CFQsEwwodBykAqg" target="_blank">Buy the Turtle Beach PX4 here for &pound;100</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Turtle Beach PX4" alt="3 of the best PlayStation 4 headsets" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/best-sony-ps4-headsets-review-turtle-beach-px4.jpg?1404959014" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/3-best-ps4-headsets/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/3-best-ps4-headsets/feature#comments Gaming Geek accessories PlayStation 4 Sony Wed, 09 Jul 2014 12:11:23 +0000 Marc McLaren 1441535 at http://www.stuff.tv Sony Xperia C3: a phone designed specifically for selfies http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-c3-phone-designed-specifically-selfies/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A front camera equipped with LED flash and wide angle lens helps you embrace the narcissism </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony Xperia C3: a phone designed specifically for selfies" alt="Sony Xperia C3: a phone designed specifically for selfies" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/sony-xperia-c3-white.jpg?1404870422" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>As <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-gina-smartphone-s-front-flash-makes-it-ultimate-selfie-taker/news">rumoured</a>, Sony today announced a brand new smartphone aimed squarely at the selfie generation.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&rsquo;s also geared towards selfies on the software front, with several apps on board like Portrait Retouch (pretty self-explanatory), Eye Beam (change the pattern of your eye reflection) and AR Effect (make yourself look like a pirate or clown by adding virtual costumes).</p> <p>The Xperia C3 also has an 8MP main camera with Exmor RS sensor and SteadyShot image stabilisation, and on the spec front it boasts a 1.2GHz Snapdragon quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and a 5.5in HD screen. While the camera may be small, its large grip means it doesn&rsquo;t feel awkward or unsteady in the hand.</p> <p>The dimensions and weight in our spec box below do not take into account whichever lens you&rsquo;ve mounted on the camera, but the two we used (a Zeiss 16-70mm zoom and Zeiss 35mm prime) both felt fine and well balanced on the camera. The camera&rsquo;s new BIONZ X image processing engine helps too, doing a fine job of reducing noise where it appears as well as offering a huge ISO range of 100-25600. With a reasonably fast lens attached, you can snap away in very murky conditions and still end the evening with plenty of usably sharp photos.</p> <p>Speaking of lenses, we should point out that the images we&rsquo;ve posted here were taken with Sony&rsquo;s Zeiss Vario-Tesser 16-70mm f/4 zoom and Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f/2.8 prime lenses, which are priced at &pound;840 and &pound;700 respectively. Both, in other words, are significantly pricier than the A6000 body itself. Cheaper E mount lenses may not perform quite as well (you can buy it in a kit with the Vario-Tessar for &pound;1,300, with a 16-50mm power zoom lens for &pound;670, or with 16-50mm and 55-210mm zooms for &pound;880).</p> <p>On the video front, the A6000 is able to capture 1080p at 50, 25 or 24fps in either AVCHD or MP4 format. We found the video quality to be excellent and the stereo sound to be clear, even without an external microphone. It&rsquo;s not quite up to the stellar standards of the full-frame Sony A7R, but then the A6000 costs &pound;1,000 less&hellip;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a7r/review">Sony A7R review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A6000 sample image" alt="Sony A6000 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7000-sample-5_0.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A6000 sample image" alt="Sony A6000 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7000-sample-8.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A6000 sample image" alt="Sony A6000 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7000-sample-9.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A6000 sample image" alt="Sony A6000 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7000-sample-3.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Usability: View to a thrill </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sony&rsquo;s OLED electronic viewfinders are consistently fantastic, and that&rsquo;s the case here: clamp your eye to the EVF and you&rsquo;re rewarded with a large, bright and pin-sharp image that damn near fools you into thinking you&rsquo;re looking through an optical viewfinder. This, of course, is arguably better than optical, because it can overlay more information on screen and show you a preview of exactly how your shot is going to turn out. If you prefer, you can compose shots using the 3in tilting screen, which works well enough.</p> <p>The physical controls are small out of necessity, but the mode and adjustment dials are pleasingly chunky, and we didn&rsquo;t have any issues with changing settings on the fly using these and the other buttons.</p> <p>One thing we have to highlight is the incredible speed and accuracy of the A6000&rsquo;s autofocus. The A7R felt a little quicker to get a lock, but at this point we&rsquo;re talking milliseconds difference, so perhaps we&rsquo;re just subconsciouly assuming the A7R&rsquo;s hefty price tag makes it the speedier. The A6000 has 179 phase-detection focus points and 25 contrast-detection focus points, and between them they allow the camera to focus almost as soon as you start to press the shutter button. We&rsquo;d say it&rsquo;s faster than any DSLR we&rsquo;ve used.</p> <p>Unlike a lot of system cameras, there&rsquo;s no optical image stabilisation inside the A6000&rsquo;s body. We didn&rsquo;t find it a problem in our few weeks with the camera, as most of Sony&rsquo;s E-mount lenses are either equipped with stabilisation or fast enough to not need it. But if you&rsquo;re using slower, non-stabilised lenses you could notice some blurrier results when shooting handheld.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The A6000&#039;s control layout works well, despite the tiny button sizes" alt="The A6000&#039;s control layout works well, despite the tiny button sizes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a6000-wall-rear.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The screen tilts both up and down (but not left or right)" alt="The screen tilts both up and down (but not left or right)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a6000-screen.jpg?1404121095" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony A6000 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sensor: 24.3MP APS-C Exmor CMOS</p> <p>Max ISO: 25600</p> <p>Video format: MP4 and AVCHD, 1080p at 60/50, 25 or 24fps</p> <p>Screen: 3in 921,600-dot LCD</p> <p>Electronic viewfinder: 1,440,000-dot touch sensitive OLED</p> <p>Connectivity: Wi-Fi, NFC, micro USB, micro HDMI</p> <p>Dimensions: 120 x 66.9 x 45.1mm</p> <p>Weight: 344g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Connectivity: NFC and Wi-Fi </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Like an increasing number of new cameras, Wi-Fi and NFC come included here. If you can see something in No Man&rsquo;s Sky you can visit it. Every star in the sky can be reached and if you stay in one place long enough you can watch it slowly turn from day to night. &ldquo; That&rsquo;s happening because the planet is actually spinning through the universe, which is mind blowing when you realise it for the first time. Those are the moments that make it feel like we&#39;ve really hit on that science-fiction dream,&rdquo; says Murray.</p> <p>But isn&rsquo;t there still a risk that latecomers will have nothing new to discover? Murray doesn&rsquo;t think so: &quot; To question the size of the game means you haven&rsquo;t grasped the full scale of the universe. Also on show was <em>Dragon Age: Inquisition</em> (all you lovers out there will be pleased to hear it&#39;ll have the most romance options of any Bioware game yet), and makers Bioware also spoke a little bit about the next <em>Mass Effect</em> game, saying it wouldn&#39;t be a mere continuation of the existing story but a whole new adventure.</p> <p>As for the new <em>Mirror&#39;s Edge</em>, DICE showed off some impressive conceptual footage and spoke about delivering a more flexible parkour experience this time around: Faith will have various options to get to a place, but the quickest ones might be the most difficult.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/electronic-arts/fully-charged-google-maps-big-mobile-update-oculus-rift-multiplayer-aspirations-and-">Fully Charged: Google Maps&#39; massive mobile update, Oculus Rift&#39;s billion-player aspirations, and Star Wars Battlefront is coming soon</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/2yKv45X_OIo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> What Else? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Activision plans to have Bungie&rsquo;s anticipated shooter <em>Destiny</em> on the show floor, and will also be showing <em>Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare</em> and <em>Skylanders Trap Team</em>.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re also really interested to see if perhaps Oculus will shed some light on recent developments, as well as when we might expect its Rift headset to leave developer beta and become widely available.</p> <p>Otherwise, we expect lots of little bits of info to pop up in the weeks before the show starts, so check back as we sort that out and let you know what you&rsquo;ll be playing soon down the line.</p> <p><strong>Update 06/06/14:</strong> If you were wondering which games from publishers we haven&#39;t already covered will be playable at E3 2014, here are some of the highlights: <em>Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel</em>; <em>Monster Hunter 4: Ultimate</em>; <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/homefront-revolution-announced/feature"><em>Homefront: The Revolution</em></a>; <em>Pro Evolution Soccer 15</em>; <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/kiefer-sutherland-right-choice-snake-metal-gear-solid-5/news"><em>Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain</em></a>; <em>The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt</em>; <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/alien-isolation/review"><em>Alien: Isolation</em></a>; <em>Sonic Boom</em>; <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/company-heroes-2/review"><em>Company of Heroes 2 </em></a>(the console version); <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/mortal-kombat-x-out-2015-platforms-old-and-new/news"><em>Mortal Kombat X</em></a>; and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/batman-arkham-knight/review"><em>Batman: Arkham Knight</em></a>.</p> <p><strong>Update 09/06/14:</strong> Is a new <em>Tomb Raider</em> title in the offing? Both Microsoft and Sony initially talked up their consoles as being the centre of an entertainment hub; swiping through TV stations with Kinect, game-sharing on PS4, and so forth. But there seems to be little of that in evidence in the titles on display at E3 &ndash; bar a few flashes of innovation, buried in Microsoft and Sony&#39;s indie games presentations.</p> <p>For the most part, the story was one of a retreat from interesting new technologies and game mechanics, back towards tried-and-tested franchises.&nbsp;Since neither of the next-gen consoles is making the most of their unique features (indeed, Microsoft&#39;s even releasing an Xbox One <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/xbox-one-be-sold-without-kinect-june/news" target="_blank">minus the previously-essential Kinect</a>), you&#39;re left with a numbers game based around specs and titles &ndash; and on both counts, the PC looks to have the consoles trumped.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/J4mjCHKAilA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s PC gone mad </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Now, I&#39;m no PC gaming evangelist; I do most of my gaming on a PS3, and my antiquated notebook struggles to run Skyrim on low settings. But spec up a current gaming PCs and you have something that&#39;s easily on par with the PS4 and Xbox One on raw graphical grunt. And almost all of the non-exclusive titles are making their way over to the PC; Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Far Cry 4 and GTA V are all releasing on PC alongside the console versions.</p> <p>PC specs are as good as you&#39;re prepared to shell out for; upgradeability means that you can start small and upgrade as cashflow allows, and with Steam&#39;s Big Picture mode, you finally have a PC gaming interface that sits happily in your living room. The launch of Valve&#39;s Steam Machine project may have been delayed, but then, PCs are an open platform, and if you want to bung SteamOS on your machine, there&#39;s nothing stopping you &ndash; once it launches, of course.</p> <p>The library of titles available on PC includes all the big cross-platform franchises, plus some exclusives like the expansive Star Citizen and Syndicate throwback <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/satellite-reign-awesome-syndicate-sequel-we-shouldve-had/feature" target="_blank">Satellite Reign</a> &ndash; both of which employ the interesting game mechanics that the big console-exclusive titles seem to shy away from. There&#39;s also a vibrant indie scene on PC that the consoles are only just catching up to.</p> <p>I could be wrong; Sunset Overdrive might turn out to be the best thing I&#39;ve ever played. But on the current evidence, neither of the next-gen consoles are making the most of their unique features &ndash; and that leaves me wondering what, exactly, they do that a PC can&#39;t.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/save-game-how-kickstarters-resurrecting-your-favourite-games/feature" target="_blank">Save game: how Kickstarter&#39;s resurrecting your favourite games</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Zu3HL-R0XeU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Satellite Reign" alt="Satellite Reign" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/satellite-reign.jpg?1403060638" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/e3-2014/microsoft-and-sony-e3-keynotes-were-exciting-and-made-me-want-buy-gaming-pc/featur" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/e3-2014/microsoft-and-sony-e3-keynotes-were-exciting-and-made-me-want-buy-gaming-pc/featur#comments Console games E3 2014 Games consoles Microsoft Opinion PlayStation 4 Sony Xbox One Tue, 10 Jun 2014 15:36:40 +0000 Stephen Graves 1438864 at http://www.stuff.tv
