This is the closest you&#39;ll ever get to a virtual tour of the Nostromo. While the name&#39;s different and you&#39;re on a space station rather than a ship, everything about its design is informed by Scott&#39;s original movie setting.</p> <p>Cold white walls abound, CRT monitors blink through the darkness, and flashing lights guide you nervously through claustrophobic corridors from one room to the next. The hospital looks like the Nostromo&#39;s med bay, supersized. In the dining area, a table is littered with retro-sloganed cereal boxes and kids drawings &ndash; suggesting that whole families lived here at one time. Their current whereabouts will surely form a major plot point. (We&#39;re predicting &#39;oozetastic cocoon&#39;.)</p> <p>Other nods to the original flick include multi-lingual signs which play a vital role in navigation, all manner of workstation switches and levers, and various containers, gels and tools with which you&#39;re able to splice together additional melee weaponry. Fox supplied the devs with 3TB of unused <em>Alien</em> material, and it&#39;s evidently been put to fantastic use.

Ingeniously, this looks like the future as imagined in the &#39;70s and &#39;80s, rather than the pristine, touchscreen-centric version popularised by modern telly and cinema. It&#39;s Tom Baker over David Tennant, Peter Weller as opposed to Joel Kinnaman.&nbsp;</p> <p>And HD really enables that setting to sing &ndash; as well as injecting the eponymous lead baddie with an entirely fresh sense of fear. The biggest risk being taken by Creative Assembly is unleashing a game with no fire button upon a market saturated with shooters. Evidently, the idea here is to go in the opposite direction to colossal xeno-flop <em><a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/aliens-colonial-marines" target="_blank">Aliens: Colonial Marines</a></em>, and that has to be considered a positive. Instead of conventional weaponry, your only hope while navigating the Sevastopol &ndash; at least to begin with &ndash; is a motion tracker, a flashlight, and a limp-limbed melee attack.</p> <p>In a potential masterstroke, <em>Isolation</em> isn&#39;t about killing the alien, but outlasting it. And the lack of enemy scripting isn&#39;t the only thing ensuring you a tough ride; it learns from your behaviour, too. Try to use the same route through each environment, or attack with the same cobbled-together object too often, and Creative Assembly says it&#39;ll adjust its tactics in response. How exactly remains to be seen, but it sounds fascinating.

</p> <p>And when the acid lady does appear as a blip on your motion tracker? Well, it&#39;s as terrifying as you both hoped and dreaded. Particularly when the signal then disappears again, inspiring <em>Blair Witch</em>-esque shrieks of &#39;where the eff is it?!&#39; in your mind. Even more frightful are the occasions when you catch the shadow of its tail draping down from above, or switch on the flashlight to spot it sliding past a doorway. As in the <em>GTA</em> titles it&#39;s possible to attract an increasingly enthusiastic level of police attention, until you&#39;re left with no choice but to escape or just keep shooting until the attack helicopters turn you into a gruff, trenchcoat-wearing hamburger. That lady over there is a schoolteacher who recently survived dengue fever, so you&#39;ll probably leave her alone, whereas <em>that</em> guy&#39;s a hedge fund manager who recently bought <em>Horrible Bosses</em>&nbsp;on Blu-Ray and enjoyed it, so you can hack his bank account and run him over in his own car without feeling at all guilty.&nbsp;</p> <p>However, the flipside of being an internet gremlin is that you, too can be hacked, and not just as part of the single-player story. Your friends can sneak into the game you&#39;re playing, sidle past you and start electro-siphoning your cash. It&#39;s then up to you to find them and let them know how displeased with their conduct you are. What&#39;s not in doubt, however, is that the game looks phenomenal on the new consoles.</p> <p>Every beautiful backdrop begs to be explored, enemies pull in inspiration from all manner of cultural favourites (see how many you can spot in the trailer above), and the futuristic gunplay has the feel of a comic book brought to life.</p> <p>What&#39;s more, the backdrops aren&#39;t really just backdrops - in fact much of the world will be fully playable. Basically, if you can see it, and reach it, you can explore it.</p> <p>Gorgeous graphics alone don&#39;t make a great game, but they can turn a great game into an iconic one. That city is itself protected by the mysterious Traveler, a celestial sphere whose shields prevent further harm coming to it, and by the Guardians - of which you, the player, will be one.&nbsp;</p> <p>Guardians are split into three classes and each of those can be played as one of three distinct races.</p> <p>Of the classes, Warlocks combine weapons with magical powers, Hunters are all abut demonstrating recon and cunning, and Titans channel the spirit of <em>Halo</em>&#39;s iconic Master Chief, being most dangerous with thunderous melee attacks.</p> <p>As far as the races go, Humans are fairly generic (much like most of us would be in an end-of-the-world scenario), Awoken mix vampiric and angelic traits (2714&#39;s answer to emos, then), and Exo are powerful cyborgs with no emotions or memories. Think Cybermen, but even colder.</p> <p>Your job isn&#39;t only to shield what&#39;s left on Earth, mind. You also get to journey through an incredibly detailed solar system, taking down the alien forces that inhabit mankind&#39;s fallen colonies. But it&#39;s not only the fluid, larger-than-life shooting against a mixture of human and AI opponents of myriad shapes and sizes that appeals: there&#39;s also loot to be earned and/or stolen along the way.</p> <p>The in-game currency is key to the near-endless customisation available, with a city area known as The Tower packed with new weapons (just wait until you see the all-conquering Thunderlord machine gun in action), vehicles, and spaceships with which to soup-up your character. The promising idea is that this truly becomes&nbsp;<em>your</em>&nbsp;game rather than Bungie&#39;s, with you and your pals&#39; characters all uniquely personalised.</p> <p>Matchmaking takes place on the fly, once you&#39;ve chosen the race and class of your character. Excitingly, you never know which kind of mission you&#39;re going to be hit with next. Some are solo while others require team-mates; despite technically being a co-op game, there are competitive tasks included too; and Bungie even promises time-limited objectives will play a part. But even when kitted out with the best armour, sharpest sword, or most powerful magic, combat remains merciless. But also because you lose &lsquo;souls&rsquo; (the game&rsquo;s currency, basically) on every death, and can only retrieve them by retracing your steps to where you last perished.</p> <p>Get there and touch your bloodstain, and all is restored. Fail, and said lost &lsquo;souls&rsquo; are gone forever. Mo-capped animations eliminate the rigidity often found in the original, light and darkness are manipulated in ways that startle with wonder at times and unsettle through fear at others, and even deaths look weirdly satisfying.</p> <p>One of my personal highlights is being catapulted off a cliff by a pack of wild dogs, like something out of a Will Ferrell movie. Where other games offer magic, Stick of Truth invites you to master the art of targeted flatulence, and weapons are made more deadly by attaching tufts of ginger pubic hair. Because obviously Europeans are really easily offended by these topics. It turns out the standard DualShock 3 is supported via Bluetooth (if your telly supports it) or USB, and even rumble works. Between that and the complete lack of lag, you really do get the full PS3 experience.</p> <p>The only difference we found was that there was a little graphical fizzing around edges, which you wouldn&#39;t get on the native PS3 version, but that could well be down to the conditions of the crazy CES network - the video quality automatically scales to match the connection quality.</p> <p>We also discovered that the PlayStation Now app simply appears alongside the likes of Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Facebook in the Bravia TV&#39;s menus, although the app frontend we saw (just pretty icons for the four available games in the demo) hasn&#39;t yet been finalised.</p> <p>Multiplayer is supported between devices, PlayStation Trophys are included, and you can stop playing on one device and pick up where you left off on another. So it’s no surprise that Ghosts’ multiplayer relies on the familiar favourites, with the Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed, Free-for-All and Infected modes all making (welcome) returns.</p> <p>There is more freedom to personalise soldiers, though, including the long-overdue option to play as a woman. There’s enhanced movement, too, so you can now leap over obstacles like a Parkour master and lean out of cover. You get a ship early on in the game, and from there it’s up to you to explore the treacherous Caribbean waters. <em>Black Flag</em> is a much more open-world experience than previous games in the series, with a massive amount of optional exploration.</p> <p>As before, you can hunt animals to forge items and purchase upgrades for your ship. But this time, you can also find treasure maps and explore under the sea - a second player can even aid your plundering using a companion iPad app.</p> <p>And, in a move that’s already angered PETA, you can harpoon whales for their blubber. In <em>Assassin’s Creed IV</em>, Edward Kenway is a mixture of the two characters - he’s the grandfather of Connor, but he’s an ambitious Welshman with a taste for adventure (in a nod to Ezio’s philandering ways, he’s shown in bed with a woman within the first five minutes of the game). He’s a better avatar than Connor, but not a particularly memorable one, while the current-day replacement for Desmond Miles is similarly non-descript.&nbsp;</p> <p>Thankfully, the supporting characters add some personality to the game, especially pirates Edward "Blackbeard" Thatch and Anne Bonny. It's worth noting that the great hiring mechanic makes a return from <em>Brotherhood </em>- you recruit new members of crew to your ship and then promote them as you wish. We also like the new setup for the contemporary parts of the game - you’re working for a games developer to uncover secrets from within its games. Thankfully, Ubisoft has addressed the main criticisms. The long, monotonous opening has been removed - you’re into the action and playing as the main protagonist straight away, while you’re awarded your first ship within the opening few hours. Its greatest strength is how well the pirating vibe has been captured, with a huge open world to explore, fantastic naval battles, and loads of treasure to plunder.</p> <p>Sadly though, it’s not enough to entirely freshen up the <em>Assassin’s Creed</em> formula, and basic elements (not to mention tenets of the series) such as parkour and combat don’t feel as polished as they are in other games. Having said that, as with <em>Call of Duty</em>, <em>Assassin’s Creed</em> has become an annual event that offers fans a dependably enjoyable and lengthy experience. During a closed-door session at the Tokyo Game Show, the developers (SCE Studios Japan) demonstrated simple gameplay controls - walk, jump and interact - but it is also very far from being your usual platformer. Why? For one, the character is completely defenseless, and has no means of attack.</p> <p>The rain is your ally, and your worst enemy. With it, you can spot the boy, who is also barely visible, even as the rain splashes on him and creates a silhouette. Move indoors, and you’ll have to rely on environmental objects such as water puddles, wet footprints or bump into objects to pinpoint his location.</p> <p>These actions reveal the boy’s position to you, and unfortunately, to the unknown creatures. And once that happens, run. Run for your dear life, and hide.</p> <p dir="ltr">There are two methods to hide your presence - going under a shelter to mask yourself from the monsters, or running underneath a monster that’s taller to seek safety. Monsters are also attracted to sound. Play it right, and you can distract them, clearing a path in the process. It’s breezy, accessible, depth-free stuff not far removed from the popular Lego games, but for older Disney fans it can be repetitive. Want another figurine? That starts at £12 per figure going up to £25 for a pack of three. And another Play Set to play will cost you £30.
