Tim Cook said it&rsquo;ll need a nightly charge, but how close to the edge will you push it on an average day? Probably pretty close.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Playing games or directly interacting with graphics-intense apps is likely to tax the battery more, which could generate the lower figure of about 2.5 hours of active use, while less-intensive apps should give it more screen-on time during the day. And fitness tracking shouldn&rsquo;t be a big drain, as the report says the Watch is expected to hit nearly 4 consecutive hours of data recording.</p> <p>If those numbers all seem underwhelming, it&rsquo;s probably due to Apple&rsquo;s use of higher-end components. href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/fully-charged-paul-mccartney-live-concert-google-cardboard-truly-amazing-kinect-tech-demo-and-">studio backing it</a>, the new Steve Jobs film has finally begun production. CNET reports that crew members completed setting up the famous garage scene that Jobs and partner Steve Wozniak first set up shop in during the early days of Apple - and it&#39;s in the actual, real-life garage at Jobs&#39; one-time home in Palo Alto, California.</p> <p>Aaron Sorkin, recently of <em>The Social Network</em> and <em>The Newsroom</em> fame, penned the script, while <em>Slumdog Millionaire</em> director Danny Boyle is helming the film. According to Sorkin, the film won&rsquo;t be a comprehensive overview of Jobs&#39; professional rise - unlike the rough <em>Jobs</em> starring Ashton Kutcher - but rather focus on three key product launches that he oversaw: the Macintosh in 1984, the NeXT computer in 1988, and finally the iPod in 2001.</p> <p>Michael Fassbender is set to play Jobs, so at least the film has an excellent actor to anchor such a unique approach, while Seth Rogen is reportedly playing Wozniak, Jeff Daniels will portray former Apple CEO John Sculley, and Kate Winslet has taken an unspecified role.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.cnet.com/news/lights-camera-apple-filming-starts-for-new-steve-jobs-biopic/">CNET</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/fully-charged-michael-fassbender-play-steve-jobs-full-jurassic-world-trailer-and-gta5-leads-uk">Michael Fassbender to play Steve Jobs</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> New Rock Band game teased via survey </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Last week, Harmonix restarted the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-3/rock-band-releasing-first-new-downloadable-songs-nearly-two-years/news">release of new downloadable songs</a> for <em>Rock Band</em> on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 after nearly two years away, leading many to wonder if it was the first step towards properly reviving the franchise with a new-gen console entry.</p> <p>Well, the studio&rsquo;s new survey isn&rsquo;t going to dash those hopes. Offered to fans on Twitter on Friday, the survey inquires about users&#39; past series experience - but then switches gears and asks about which new systems they own, and if a new game were released, how they&rsquo;d want it to come (digital or physical, and game only or with instruments) and if they&rsquo;d pre-order such a game.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s still not an official confirmation of anything, obviously, but we doubt Harmonix would go live with something like this unless plans were seriously being considered - or finalized. The Watch has a fully round face, lacking the partially-obscured view offered by the similarly-shaped Moto 360, and offers multiple band options - and it looks like they should be interchangeable.</p> <p class="p1">The Alcatel Watch will connect to Android phones for notifications and to act as a shutter button for paired device cameras, but the watch itself doesn&rsquo;t look it will run Android Wear as its OS. It promises to have hardware sensors for fitness and health tracking, with heart rate monitoring seen in the image above.</p> <p class="p1">For now, all we have are vague details, a render, and promises - what we don&rsquo;t have are hardware specs, extensive functionality info, or any kind of pricing or availability details. Once we have those, we&rsquo;ll know whether Alcatel&rsquo;s Watch really has potential to be a smartwatch for the Android-toting masses.</p> <p class="p1">[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/alcatel-onetouch-at-ces-2015-opening-access-to-the-latest-technology-to-everyone-300014776.html">PR Newswire</a>]</p> <p class="p1"><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gadget-awards-2014/stuff-gadget-awards-2014-these-are-5-best-smartwatches-year/feature">Stuff Gadget Awards 2014: The Motorola Moto 360 is the Smartwatch of the Year</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/alcatel/alcatel-watch-promises-be-fraction-cost-other-smartwatches/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/alcatel/alcatel-watch-promises-be-fraction-cost-other-smartwatches/news#comments Alcatel Android CES 2015 iOS iPhone 6 Smartwatches Wearable tech Mon, 05 Jan 2015 18:47:48 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1456506 at http://www.stuff.tv CES 2015: Withings’ Activité gets a Pop of colour http://www.stuff.tv/ces-2015-withings-activite-gets-pop-colour/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The world’s best-looking fitness tracker gets a colourful sibling with a significantly cheaper price tag </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="CES 2015: Withings’ Activité gets a Pop of colour" alt="CES 2015: Withings’ Activité gets a Pop of colour" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/WithingsActivitePopmain.jpg?1420495536" /> </div> </div> </div> <p class="p1">We sometimes wish fitness trackers would take a break from measuring our health and spend a few minutes worrying about their own appearance.</p> <p class="p1">That&rsquo;s never been a criticism you could level at the Withings Activité, though, and now we&rsquo;ve just had some wrist-time with its equally handsome (and cheaper) new brother called the Activité Pop.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/mark-wilson" title="View user profile.">Mark Wilson</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="p1">The Pop has identical functionality to the original&nbsp;Activité. Instead of outrightly making smartwatches, it has instead come up with a neat little add-on called the e-Strap.</p> <p>If you&#39;re the type who buys Montblanc watches, the average smartwatch would seem rather dinky in comparison. But with the e-Strap, Montblanc adds smartwatch functionality without spoiling the design of its watches. The add-on is made specifically for its new Montblanc Timewalker Urban Speed line, however.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Notifications in style </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What is the e-Strap made of? Good news: it will be compatible with all 42mm or 43mm-wide Timewalker watches.</p> <p>The electronic module will have a 128x36 pixel resolution on a 0.9-inch monochromatic OLED touchscreen display. It will display the standard text and call notifications, but also include an activity tracker complete with an accelerometer and pedometer. There&#39;s also Bluetooth 4.0, vibration alerts and an option to control your phone&#39;s music player.</p> <p>Montblanc claims its e-Strap will offer up to five days of continuous use between charges thanks to its internal lithium ion battery. It will be chargeable via microUSB and is aalso shock-and-splash resistant.</p> <p>Prices? It&rsquo;s a plastic OLED affair, which means true, deep blacks. It&rsquo;s no surprise to see the Smartwatch 3&rsquo;s blacks lose out there then. What is surprising however, are the horrible whites, which in comparison to its rivals, look practically yellow.</p> <p>The completely washed out dull colours do nothing to help matters either. Combined with the off-whites, the Smartwatch 3 delivers a rather unpleasant viewing experience.</p> <p>Its 320 x 320 resolution isn&rsquo;t lower than the competition at least, and text is sharp and easy to read. The square nature of the display also means that the end of notifications aren&rsquo;t cut off either, which is another plus.</p> <p>Another bonus is the ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the screen to ensure it can be read comfortably. Coupled with the 4GB of storage you can go for a run with Bluetooth headphones, listening to locally stored music and tracking your location while your cumbersome smartphone is left dozing at home.</p> <p>It&#39;s a shame then, that the Smartwatch 3, given its sporty design and GPS skills, lacks a heart rate sensor, which is present on both the G Watch R and Moto 360. We&#39;re not entirely sure why Sony would leave it out, although the space required for the GPS sensor and a potential extra drain on battery life might have something to do with it.</p> <p>Either way, it means we&#39;re still yet to see an Android Wear fitness watch that combines the perfect suite of features. We&#39;d argue that tracking your run is probably more important than measuring heart rate for most people overall, but if you want both, then you might be better off with a dedicated fitness device such as the TomTom Multi Sport or Garmin Forerunner 920XT.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We were rather lazy that day" alt="Sony SmartWatch 3" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN0017_0.jpg?1419428781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Run Keeper in action" alt="Sony SmartWatch 3" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN0016.jpg?1419428781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery life </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Smartwatch 3 should last you around a day and a half, with the screen always on, making it a stamina match for the LG G Watch R.</p> <p>Having said that, you will want to top up before or after tracking a run, as using the GPS function hits the battery a little harder.</p> <p>We lost just under 10% after a 30 minute jog which isn&#39;t too bad, but if you&#39;re planning a long running session it&#39;s something to bear in mind.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="718" height="539" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Screenshot_2014-12-17-16-58-56.jpg?1419428781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Android wear: bigger and better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Within a few days of wrapping the Smartwatch 3 around our wrists, we were greeted with a pleasant surprise - an update to Android Wear 5.0.1 Lollipop.</p> <p>After a rather lengthy download and install session, we were met with some very welcome improvements to Google&#39;s wearable OS. And now Sony has officially&nbsp;<a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/12/17/7412393/sony-cancels-the-interview-release-after-theaters-pull-out">cancelled its theatrical debut</a>&nbsp;just a week before the release date, and says that no further release plans (like video on demand or Blu-ray) are in the works. With wearable wrist computers flooding the market, it takes something special to stand out from the crowd &ndash; and all of these devices have what it takes to adorn the discerning gadget geek&#39;s arm.7</p> <p>The Moto 360, however, stands out from the crowd, thanks to its stunning, minimalist, circular design.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Winner: Motorola Moto 360 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Ever since the Babylonians used the sundial to work out whether they were late for the afternoon battle with the Elamites, we&rsquo;ve been using circles to tell the time. These days the only battles we face are against PPI calls and wasps in the pub garden but our favourite timekeepers are still the same shape (if a little easier to strap
to your wrist). Oh, and they do
a lot more too. The Moto 360
was the first smartwatch to marry form with function, without looking like a prop from a &rsquo;90s sci-fi movie. So it&rsquo;s a little chunky for some tastes and the battery life could
be better, but the 360 was the
first Android Wear smartwatch
we didn&rsquo;t want to take off, like, ever.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-360/motorola-moto-360/review" target="_blank">Motorola Moto 360 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Motorola Moto 360" alt="Motorola Moto 360" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorola-moto-360_1.jpg?1418573289" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Runner-up: Samsung Gear Live </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>With Google saying no to Android Wear skins, the Gear Live is a Samsung smartwatch that keeps it simple.
