Pretty much all of the major smartphone players have turned their, er, hand to making wristputers this year, with the likes of Samsung, Apple, Sony, LG and Motorola all announcing or releasing their own devices.</p> <p>Google&#39;s also thrown its hat into the ring, developing the Android Wear operating system as a means of giving the fledgling market some consistency.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-williams" title="View user profile.">Andrew Williams</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Design: Casio vs Cartier </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Looks matter in a smartwatch. This is something you&rsquo;re going to wear on your wrist, most of the day, every day.</p> <p>Both the Moto 360 and G Watch R have gone for a slightly more natural look than many, with a circular face. Most of the square or rectangular smartwatches we&rsquo;ve seen are that bit too geeky-looking.</p> <p>LG has tried pretty hard to make the G Watch R look like a normal watch &ndash; complete with fake winder dial and a screen surround with minute markers. In photos, it looks pretty great. However, in person there&rsquo;s a whiff of the try-hard to the LG G Watch R. The more it attempts to look like a standard watch, the clearer it becomes that this really isn&rsquo;t one.&nbsp; It&rsquo;s that bit too clear you&rsquo;re looking at an LCD display, not a real watch face.</p> <p>The Motorola Moto 360, on the other hand, embraces the &lsquo;new technology&rsquo; vibe. Its screen surround is bright metal, offering a more up-to-date look.</p> <p>Will it age more quickly, style-wise? Possibly, but the tech in this area is moving so fast that it&rsquo;s not just something that affects the design. We&#39;re in early adopter territory, folks.</p> <p>If you want a watch that&rsquo;s going to impress, there&rsquo;s only one right choice here: the Moto 360.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s thankfully not <em>too</em> eye-catching, though. It attracts attention, rather than demanded it. You can still get pretty normal-looking and feeling straps for the Moto 360 too. And you can choose between metal links and a leather strap, although leather straps seem to be more widely available.</p> <p>Exactly the same strap options are on offer with the LG G Watch R too: metal and leather.</p> <p>Judging by the watches we&rsquo;ve seen so far, a round face is the way forward. However, the Motorola has the courage of its design convictions. And that extra confidence shows.</p> <p>For the spec lovers among you, the Moto 360 weighs 49g while the LG G Watch R is 63g. Both have fairly chunky watch faces too.</p> <p>The Moto&rsquo;s is 46mm diameter by 11.5mm tall, the LG G watch R 46.4 by 11.1mm tall. There&rsquo;s not a great deal in it.</p> <p>Both offer IP67 water resistance. This means you can drop them in water for a half-hour without ill effects, but we don&rsquo;t recommend submitting them to more than a heavy downpour. Google even warns you not to take the Moto 360 out swimming, on the Google Play page. Don&rsquo;t say we didn&rsquo;t warn you.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Motorola Moto 360</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We get a-round, round, round..." alt="Which smartphone is best: Motorola Moto 360 vs LG G Watch R" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/watches_0.jpg?1415810885" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: Cut that out </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Motorola Moto 360 and LG G Watch R both have circular screens. But one is more circular than the other.</p> <p>Confused? Just check out the very bottom of the Motorola Moto 360 display: there&rsquo;s a little blank section, which is where the display driver has to go.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s a real shame, and something that chips off some of the glossy look. It&rsquo;s also something people might not notice when just researching to buy one. Take note.</p> <p>The LG G Watch R display is fully rounded - no weird chips or cut-outs.</p> <p>It also offers more impressive-looking display tech. Where the Moto 360 uses a fairly standard LCD screen, the G Watch R has an P-OLED (plastic organic light emitting diode) display, capable of providing black levels that LCDs just aren&rsquo;t capable of. When the watch face wants to look black, it really is black &ndash;&nbsp;aside from whatever ambient light might be reflecting off the surface.</p> <p>Unfortunately the Moto 360&rsquo;s LCD display also highlights that there&rsquo;s a bit cut out of the display, as you can see the difference between the back of the surround and the imperfect black of the display. Roll on Motorola Moto 360 MK II? Kinda.</p> <p>Both watches offer similar resolutions, with 320 pixels across the display, cut down to 290 pixels in one direction in the Moto 360 because of the screen indent. As the screens are pretty small, that&#39;s enough pixels to make the screens pretty sharp. Once again, the LG G Watch R has the advantage, if only because its 1.3-inch display is smaller than the 1.56-inch Moto one.</p> <p>Will you get used to the slightly strange Moto 360 screen shape? Of course you will, but it&rsquo;s slightly at odds with the otherwise pristine design.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: LG G Watch R</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-x-2014/review">The Motorola Moto X is our new favourite smartphone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="It&#039;s round... but there&#039;s a bit missing!" alt="Which smartphone is best: Motorola Moto 360 vs LG G Watch R" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-scr_0.jpg?1415810885" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery: Totally Phone-y </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;ve not looked into smartwatches too much yet, we have bad news: 95% of them don&rsquo;t last too long off a charge. If you&rsquo;re hoping for weeks or months of use, you&rsquo;re dreaming.</p> <p>Both the LG G Watch R and Motorola Moto 360 offer stamina that&rsquo;s similar to that of a phone.</p> <p>Once again, this is one area where the LG Watch R wins a victory, but it&rsquo;s a slighter one this time.</p> <p>At release, the Motorola Moto 360 had really quite terrible battery life, but after a few smart software updates you&rsquo;ll be able to get a solid day and a half&rsquo;s use off a charge.</p> <p>The LG G Watch R can be pushed to a full two days if you&rsquo;re very careful and don&rsquo;t go using the watch too much. We&rsquo;re in the same league here: if you want a much longer-lasting watch, check out the Pebble. There&#39;s just that bit of extra buffer in the LG.</p> <p>So why does the LG last that bit longer? There are several reasons. The simplest: it has a larger battery. Where the Motorola Moto 360 unit offers 320mAh capacity, the G Watch R has a 410mAh battery.</p> <p>The LG Watch also offers a more up-to-date processor, using the same Snapdragon 400-series chip you&rsquo;ll find in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-moto-g/review">Motorola Moto G</a>. You might assume a lower-power chip like the Moto 360&rsquo;s single-core TI OMAP 3 CPU would be more frugal, but that&rsquo;s not the case: it&rsquo;s older and not as efficient as the LG chipset.</p> <p>The G Watch R screen technology is also a massive win here. As P-OLED screens use light emitting pixels rather than a backlight like the Moto 360&rsquo;s LCD screen, the watch is able to use just a fraction of its usual power when displaying just a small amount of stuff onscreen. It does this in an &lsquo;Ambient Mode&rsquo; that kicks in when the watch hasn&rsquo;t been used for a few seconds.</p> <p>You get such a mode with the Moto 360 too, but it&rsquo;s not as efficient. &nbsp;</p> <p>As we noted earlier, now that Motorola has fixed the early battery issues, the stamina of the two is not worlds apart. And you charge them in similar ways: each comes with a little charge dock.</p> <p>However, what&rsquo;s going on behind the scenes is actually quite different. The LG Watch R uses little metal contacts that directly interface with the dock while the Moto 360 supports Qi charging. This is the most common wireless charging standard these days, and means you&rsquo;ll be able to use the Motorola smartwatch with a bunch of third-party wireless chargers. But the Moto 360 is a watch you can feel proud to wear. That matters an awful lot in the watch world, and in comparison the LG G Watch R just seems a bit&hellip; normal. &nbsp; It also helps that the Moto 360 is available for &pound;20 less at &pound;200, while feeling like the more expensive device. </p> <p>That said, if you want the absolute best performance in a smartwatch then the LG G Watch R is still the better choice. It&#39;s marginally faster, the screen isn&#39;t notched and the battery life is superior. But in this office, we feel that design is such an important part of a smartwatch&#39;s appeal that overall we&#39;d still go for the Moto 360. Blocks say that a display module, clasp and four peripheral modules will fit nicely around a small-sized wrist, while those with bigger wrists will be able to slot in an extra fifth Block.</p> <p>As well as making the prototypes smaller, the team has a lot of work to do on the connections.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; The most important thing we are going to do in the next few months is refine the connector design between the Blocks,&quot;&nbsp;says Al Fakir.&nbsp;&quot; We have an adviser who is ex Sony, specifically on audio components. At the moment we are using 3.5mm jacks, he told us we&rsquo;re not going to be able to use jacks and we&rsquo;re going to have to design something completely new.</p> <p>&quot; The reason we made [the rectangular display] wider is to fit the Edison inside. The Edison doesn&#39;t fit in the smaller display and that&#39;s the one a lot of women have told us they like and would buy. The other is a bit masculine and large.&nbsp; They say that by the end of 2015, beginning of 2016 they&#39;ll have a smaller version. That&#39;s outside our timeframe but maybe they can fast-track something for us.&quot;&nbsp;</p> <p>If you can&rsquo;t wait until the Kickstarter campaign in April 2015, check out our <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/wearable-tech/top-ten">top ten wearables</a></strong> you can buy right now. So you&rsquo;ll see permanent hour and minute marks on the fairly chunky bezel which, coupled with the digital clock faces, somehow draws attention to the fact that it&rsquo;s not a real watch.</p> <p>The Moto 360, on the other hand, struts around, proud to be futuristic and different.</p> <p>To be clear, the G Watch R isn&rsquo;t ugly or offensive, and we have no problem wearing it. In practice though, we didn&rsquo;t notice a drastic difference between the G Watch R&rsquo;s brightness setting of &lsquo;two&rsquo;, and the 360&rsquo;s automatic brightness setting.</p> <p>Both smartwatches share similarly decent readability in outdoor light, although the G Watch R&rsquo;s ambient light mode (a simplified, less power-hungry watch face that kicks in after a period of inactivity), is slightly brighter than the 360&rsquo;s.</p> <p>Overall, the G Watch R&rsquo;s screen is one of the best smartwatch displays we&rsquo;ve seen, and it makes up for its slightly smaller size and larger bezels with a sharp, readable, truly circular experience.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>LG has gifted the G Watch R with a 410mAh battery, which is larger than the 360&rsquo;s 320mAh offering. Its far newer processor is also more power efficient than the Moto 360&rsquo;s chip, so we had high hopes for battery life.</p> <p>On the first day however, we were left a little disappointed: the G Watch R seemed to drain much faster than it should have done. We&rsquo;re still not entirely sure why this was the case, and it hasn&rsquo;t happened since, but we&#39;ll be keeping an eye on the situation and will update this review if it happens again.</p> <p>For the rest of the week however, battery life has been much better. Here&#39;s a case study: we started one work day with 100% charge, used the R throughout the day to read and delete scores of emails, plus view notifications from WhatsApp, Slack and Instagram. We&nbsp;even cranked up the brightness for a while.</p> <p>Fast forward 16 hours and we still had 45% battery remaining. Impressive stuff.</p> <p>We didn&rsquo;t bother charging it overnight, instead just turning it off then firing it up in the morning with the same 45% left in the tank. At 1:30pm the following day it still had 27% remaining.</p> <p>During this time, we set the screen brightness to two (out of a maximum of six) for the majority of the time, as it was bright enough to read everything comfortably.</p> <p>Even better, this was all with the always-on Ambient Mode turned on, which is a low-power mode that kicks in after a few seconds of inactivity. The watch face becomes monochrome (which can help extend battery further, thanks to the OLED screen), until a notification comes through or you activate it with a tap. You could further extend battery life by&nbsp;turning ambient mode off: do this and the screen will stay completely blank until the R detects that you&rsquo;re looking at it, or you interact with it.</p> <p>So while you won&rsquo;t quite get two days out of it in normal use, you probably could if you were careful. Getting one full day out of it should never be a problem - and that&#39;s more than could be said of most Android Wear devices.</p> <p>So how does it compare to its main rivals? The Moto 360 struggled to last a day with its ambient screen on in our first test. After a recent software update, battery life has increased for some users up to 45% and it now easily lasts a day no matter which screen mode you choose. A second battery-improving update is rolling out to 360 users too.</p> <p>If the thought of a blank smartwatch screen come 10pm fills you with terror, the G Watch R is still the better bet over the Moto. Still, the one to beat remains the Pebble, which can typically go for five days and even a week with light use. That&rsquo;s what we call a real stamina superstar.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/review">Pebble Steel review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Refuses to die" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9966_3.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Behind the scenes at Stuff" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN0024.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A watch that runs fast. But here&#39;s a primer for those of you who just want the headlines.</p> <p>One of the most useful features of a smartwatch is its ability to push notifications directly to your wrist so you know what&#39;s worth ignoring at a glance, without having to drag your phone out of your pocket.</p> <p>While it sounds as if you&#39;re only saving a few seconds, we&#39;re already addicted to it.&nbsp; The old way of doing things just seems so awkward now. Plus it stops you from offending people at dinner by constantly taking your phone out and checking it; a quick glance at your wrist is so much more subtle. Although admittedly your fellow diners are probably too busy posting shots of their artisanal fish fingers to Instagram to notice anyway.</p> <p>Most people&#39;s inboxes are bombarded with hundreds of totally irrelevant emails over the course of a week, and if like us you hate having even a single unread email count (there are those OCD tendencies again) then it can be a pain dragging out your phone every time you want to delete one. Android Wear solves that problem and helps you achieve inbox nirvana.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G Watch R review" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9984_2.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="So useful" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9996_2.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-11"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Choosing to open up notifications on your phone is also a small, but very useful time saver. There are some useful ones out there though.</p> <p>The Wear Mini launcher lets you access your installed apps from a launcher that&#39;s pulled in from the left. This is far better than Andorid Wear&rsquo;s default &lsquo;scroll through a long list buried in a menu&rsquo; method.</p> <p>Another swipe in from the left brings up useful settings such as brightness and volume controls, the latter of which is unbelievably absent from Android Wear itself. Why give us the power to control music from our wrists and not the volume too, Google?</p> <p>Wearable Widgets is another handy app which ports all of your home screen widgets to your wrist. Stuff&rsquo;s Sophie Charara finds that the Spotify widget offers better controls than Wear&rsquo;s built-in music remote, which is just one of many examples.</p> <p>There are some nice watch faces out there if you hunt around, and you can even use apps to create your own, though they can be a little buggy. Established fitness apps such as Strava and Endomondo are also available for fitness fanatics.</p> <p>As Android Wear is adopted by more people, we expect to see more apps join the roster, offering more functionality and enhancing the Wear experience.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review">Apple Watch hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="#0nly90skidswillgetthis" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN0002_3.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Incredibly useful app" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9963_0.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-14"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hassle-free charging. Indeed, if it&#39;s up against the Moto 360 it won&#39;t win any.</p> <p>But that&#39;s about its only flaw.&nbsp; Its plastic OLED screen offers deep blacks, sharp text and good visibility, and it&rsquo;s completely circular. Hooray!</p> <p>Battery life is also as good as Android Wear gets right now, with the R easily lasting one and a half days on a single charge.</p> <p>Top that off with a smooth experience, delivered by powerful innards, and there&rsquo;s plenty to love about LG&#39;s latest wearable.</p> <p>So, if you&#39;re after an Android Wear smartwatch, your choice should currently come down to this or the 360. Which you should go for is a simple matter of priorities: if you want something nice on your wrist, it&#39;s the Moto; if design doesn&#39;t bother you, the LG wins.&nbsp;</p> <p>We shouldn&#39;t forget cost either. Motorola&rsquo;s decision to include an older processor in the 360 might have helped keep its price tag (including the wireless charging dock) down to a reasonable &pound;200. The G Watch R is now selling for around &pound;225 which makes it the priciest Android Wear watch you can buy, though not by much. Both cost more than a decent budget smartphone, then, with the Moto the cheaper unless you select the stainless steel strap.&nbsp;</p> <p>If forced to choose between the two, we&#39;d still go for the Moto. After all, this is an early adopter device that&#39;ll be in full view for most of the day, not stuck away in a pocket. It needs to look good. But for those of you who want the very best in smartwatch performance, the G Watch R is the new champ.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/wearable-tech/top-ten">Stuff&#39;s Top 10 wearables</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pretty in pink.
