Thank God, you thought: now we can all go home, have a nice cuppa and wait for phone makers to start improving battery life, which is what we all really care about.</p> <p>But no. Sorry, but there&rsquo;s more. Or less, depending on how you look at it. Because Chinese manufacturer Vivo is boasting that has a 3.85mm-thick smartphone in the works.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Making the iPhone 5s look chubby </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Taking to Weibo (China&rsquo;s answer to Twitter), the company posted images of a mysterious device next to the 7.6mm-thick iPhone 5s. And there&rsquo;s no word on its specifications or even its name, so it&rsquo;s probably some way off going on sale anywhere.</p> <p>That said, the company was the first in the world to deliver a phone with a 2K 2560 x 1440 screen, so there&rsquo;s every chance that it&rsquo;ll end up in first place in the thinness race. These come in three sizes &ndash; mini, medium and large &ndash; which have grids of 10, 18 and 27 square spaces on the back, arranged in groups of 1, 2 or 4.</p> <p>The front of an endo accepts a removable screen, while modules will be available to fill the slots on the back. So owners can fully customise their phone by adding in a 4G modem, for example, or a 5GHz WiFi module, or removing things that they don&#39;t use such as a fingerprint reader.</p> <p>More experimental phone owners might even look to add pico-projectors or remote controls, while the potential for adding in medical sensors for specialised use hasn&#39;t been overlooked either.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why modular? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A fortunate accident just before the first Ara Developers Conference made the benefits of an Ara handset clear.</p> <p>The night before the first functioning prototype was due to go on stage for its debut, someone dropped it and broke the screen. But, as Project Ara head Paul Eremenko joked during the presentation, once the phone is on the market, it&#39;ll be a simple matter to replace the screen by swapping out the front module for a new one.</p> <p>The same is obviously true for any other modules - if you&#39;re a big photography fan, and a new camera module is released, you&#39;ll be able to upgrade your phone without getting a whole new body; if you&#39;re a power user and want extra battery life, just add another one.</p> <p>The Ara team say that this means less waste, and since parts can be updated rather than thrown away the average lifespan of a phone will increase from two to five years. The downside, of course, is that modular components may end up costing more than a mass produced all-in-one (although Google is aiming to produce a basic handset for&nbsp;a very reasonable US$50) and may not be as robust.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/project-ara/modular-smartphones-are-building-blocks-tech-shambles/feature">Opinion - modular phones are the building blocks of a tech shambles</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Broke your screen? The modules and endos will literally stick together using &#39;electropermanent&#39; magnets: powerful magnets that can be turned off and on.&nbsp;</p> <p>At this stage, the design calls for all components including the battery to be hot-swappable &ndash; ie removable without shutting the phone down. As a result, there&#39;s a backup battery inside the endo to keep the phone running no matter what.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/future-phones-it-s-all-about-context/feature">The future of phones? The first prototype, Spiral 1, is a rather chunky affair, but Spiral 2 is far closer to the modular concept design seen in the early Project Ara renders.</p> <p>The Spiral 2 demo unit, which uses specially-designed Toshiba chips, can be seen in the video above; it&#39;s shown running Android OS, opening apps and swiping between homescreens. The Spiral 2 will be shown off in the flesh at the Project Ara developer conference in January.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten">The 10 best smartphones in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4qsGTXLnmKs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="433" title="Google Project Ara: coming to an early adopter near you in January" alt="Google Project Ara review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-project-ara-review-17.jpg?1414668372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Preview </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Project Ara: our modular future </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-project-ara/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/google-project-ara/review#comments Google Project Ara Smartphones Thu, 30 Oct 2014 11:26:16 +0000 Marc McLaren 1436014 at http://www.stuff.tv Sharp preparing 4K smartphone LCD screens for 2016 http://www.stuff.tv/sharp/sharp-preparing-4k-smartphone-lcd-screens-2016/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Just got a 2K display? It comes with 32GB of storage, except for the premium Black Ballistic Nylon model which offers 64GB.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Droid Turbo has what Motorola describes as &ldquo;the largest battery of any smartphone&rdquo;, giving it a claimed two full days of normal use on a single charge. It&rsquo;s also quick-charging, with a 15-minute boost giving it eight hours of life.</p> <p>The rear-facing camera sports a 21MP sensor, f/2.0 aperture, dual LED flash and 4K video capture, and there&rsquo;s a 2MP front-facer too.</p> <p>There are three finishes available: high-end Black Ballistic Nylon; and &ldquo;metalised&rdquo; Kevlar in either black or red. All models have a water-repellant nanocoating to ward off raindrops and splashes (they&rsquo;re not fully waterproof, so don&rsquo;t go dunking them in the bath).</p> <p>The Motorola Droid Turbo looks fantastic on paper, doesn&rsquo;t it? But before you reach for your credit card, you should know that the phone is currently exclusive to US network Verizon, and there are no indications of when, if ever, it&rsquo;ll make its way to the UK. Bummer.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.motorola.com/us/droid-turbo-pdp.html" target="_blank">Motorola</a>]</p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Don&#039;t expect the Moto Droid Turbo in the UK any time soon" alt="Don&#039;t expect the Moto Droid Turbo in the UK any time soon" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorola-droid-turbo-back-front.jpg?1414584866" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-droid-turbo-souped-moto-x/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-droid-turbo-souped-moto-x/news#comments Motorola Smartphones Wed, 29 Oct 2014 12:09:33 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1451709 at http://www.stuff.tv Oppo R5 hands-on http://www.stuff.tv/oppo/oppo-r5/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> We try not to cut ourselves on the world&#039;s thinnest phone </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Spot the smartphone" alt="Oppo R5 hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/DSCN9975.JPG?1414582870" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/esat-dedezade" title="View user profile.">Esat Dedezade</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>Oppo&#39;s R5 is officially the thinnest smartphone in the world, and we&#39;ve spent some time marvelling at its size-zero dimensions in Singapore.</p> <p>While we&#39;ve yet to test it fully due to time constraints, we&#39;ll update these first impressions with a full in-depth review, so stay tuned.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oppo/oppo-n3/review" target="_blank">Oppo N3 hands-on review</a></strong></p> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-pricing"><legend>Pricing</legend><div class="field field-type-number-float field-field-test-price"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> £-1.00 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-price-from"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-ratings"><legend>Ratings</legend><div class="field field-type-hcmreviewrating-rating field-field-overall-rating"> <div class="field-label">Overall rating:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="hcmrating-default"> stars</div> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>Review Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Did we mention it&#039;s thin? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The R5 is <strong><em>Thin</em></strong>.&nbsp;</p><p>Its 4.85mm body makes it, as far as we can tell, the thinnest smartphone in the known universe, beating the record set by the 5.1mm-thin Gionee Elife S5.1.</p><p>Your hands will marvel at its impossible dimensions the second you pick it up. Ours certainly did.</p><p>While the camera does bulge out significantly (making the iPhone 6 Plus' camera bulge look positively tiny in comparison), it still doesn't detract from the overall feeling of incredible sleekness.</p><p>The R5 has a primarily aluminium frame, lending it a nicely premium feel. Coupled with its crazy dimensions, it's a device you'll want to hold, for the sake of holding it.</p><p>Of course, after some users' experience with the iPhone 6 Plus, the big question surrounding slimline phones is: Will it bend? We can report that there was some flex present in the sample we were using, but other models at the launch event felt much sturdier, even when pressure was applied. We're chalking our first experience up to a pre-production sample issue for now.</p><p>It also apparently has a 'phase-shifting material' inside it which apparently improves thermal efficiency, keeping it cooler when running. It sounds great, but without an opportunity to warm the phone's processor up, we're keeping our skeptical hats firmly on until our full review.</p><p><strong>READ MORE: Apple iPhone 6 review</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="THIN." alt="Oppo R5 hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9978_3.JPG?1414582870" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apologies for the colour clash" alt="Oppo R5 hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9974_2.JPG?1414582870" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Family photo" alt="Oppo R5 hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9958_4.JPG?1414582870" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Pure blacks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The R5 packs a 5.3in AMOLED screen hold it next to its N3 sibling&#39;s LCD display, and the difference is apparent; colours are bright and vibrant, and blacks are deeper.&nbsp;On paper, its 423ppi count is sharper too, although we didn&#39;t notice any major difference at arms length between the two.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="N3 and R5 screen comparison" alt="Oppo R5 hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9983_3.JPG?1414582870" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 13MP snapper </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The R5&#39;s 13MP camera snaps shots of Singapore&#39;s beautiful skyline quickly enough, and photos appear sharp when viewed on its display.&nbsp;We&#39;ll compare the R5&#39;s snapper to its rivals in controlled camera tests when it comes to the full review, and update our impressions accordingly.</p> <p>The front-facing 5MP camera obviously won&#39;t hold a candle to the N3&#39;s swivelling 16MP camera when it comes to selfies, but it does have an 80 degree wide-angle lens for squeezing in a few more pouty faces. It&#39;s blocky, to be sure, in the same way Xperias are. It has a flap, too, to hide the microSD card slot and SIM slot plus the (Sony) camera is right in the top right hand corner just like on the Z3.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Full HD screen is lovely, too, on first glance. Text looks sharp, colours look accurate, though not dazzling, and whites look clean head on. Tilt the Honor side to side or up and down and the viewing angles aren&#39;t the best but hey, we&#39;re comparing it to &pound;550 smartphones.&nbsp;</p> <p>How about that power? Moving around the homescreens, browsing and diving into settings we&#39;ve had a lag free Honor 6 experience so far, apart from taking screenshots weirdly which oddly takes a splitsecond longer than we&#39;d expect. It can also run small apps, such as calculator, calendar and a music player, over the main app onscreen without a stutter via the Suspend Button feature.</p> <p>The AnTuTu score confirms our suspicions that the Honor 6 packs more power than it has any right to at &pound;250. It scores a mighty 36519, more than rival buget phones the Nexus 5 and OnePlus One and close to the likes of the Galaxy S5 and LG G3.</p> <p>Equally fast is focusing with the 13MP camera and in our short snapping sesson it did a reasonable, if not jaw dropping job, of taking clear pics indoors. We will put the camera further to the test in our full review as it has long been a weakness on the Nexus line.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" title="Honor 6 hands on review" alt="Honor 6 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5580_0.JPG?1414520010" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" title="Honor 6 hands on review" alt="Honor 6 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5582_0.JPG?1414520010" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4000" height="3000" title="Honor 6 hands on review" alt="Honor 6 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5584.JPG?1414520010" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="4000" height="3000" title="Honor 6 hands on review" alt="Honor 6 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5592.JPG?1414520010" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>On first impressions, and if that two day battery life is true, the Honor 6 will be the new budget smartphone to beat.&nbsp;</p> <p>It joins the Nexus and OnePlus club in a very special category: good value smartphones that act like flagships.
