According to LG (and Samsung), it&rsquo;s &ldquo;quantum dot&rdquo; technology. LG has announced its first quantum dot-enabled 4K LCD television, which will debut at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas next month. The company promises a wider color palette and enhanced saturation over traditional LCD displays, and this is the official why and how of it:</p> <p>&ldquo;The technology works by harnessing nano crystals that range in size from 2 to 10 nanometers. Each dot emits a different color depending on its size,&rdquo; reads the press release. &ldquo;By adding a film of quantum dots in front of the LCD backlight, picture color reproduction rate and overall brightness are significantly improved.&rdquo;</p> <p>No word yet on critical details like screen size or price, but we should know much more come CES. According to CNET, Samsung also plans to have its own quantum dot sets on display, so it&rsquo;s sure to be among the most tiring buzz-terms of the show.</p> <p>[Sources:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/quantum-dot-technology-to-join-lgs-4k-ultra-hd-tv-lineup-in-2015-300010004.html">PR Newswire</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.cnet.com/news/lg-leaps-quantum-dot-rivals-with-new-tv/">CNET</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/lg/lg-hopes-quantum-dots-will-give-it-quantum-leap-4k-tv-arms-race/news">In the 4K TV arms race, LG is going to make a quantum leap with, well, quantum dots</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> GTA Online heists revealed (again) </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Cooperative heists were promised a long time ago for&nbsp;<em>Grand Theft Auto Online</em>, the multiplayer component of&nbsp;<em>Grand Theft Auto V</em>. While most manufacturers deliver their smart TV functions through a hub or portal page, LG integrates everything &ndash; apps, EPG, inputs and more &ndash; seamlessly into its TVs via a series of cards arranged along the bottom of the screen. It&#39;s not perfect, but it is the most natural, organic and intuitive UI we&rsquo;ve seen on a TV and a step in the right direction that all other TV manufacturers would be wise to take note of.</p> <p>Of course, this wouldn&rsquo;t matter much if the TV&rsquo;s picture quality was duff, but thankfully the 42LB700V provides arrestingly vivid colours and decent detail and black levels. OK, if you live in a palace then you might struggle to see its screen when you&rsquo;re perched on your throne 30 yards away, but for the average Brit this TV ticks all the boxes: the full HD picture quality is punchy thanks to strong contrast, oodles of detail and rich, juicy colours; the built-in speakers are surprisingly beefy and nuanced; there&rsquo;s plenty of scope for hooking up sources thanks to four HDMI inputs; and the design is eye-catching even when the screen&rsquo;s off.</p> <p>A top notch set for budget buyers or those looking for a TV that&rsquo;s a bit more wee.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/gadget-awards-2014/stuff-gadget-awards-2014-winners-announced-these-are-best-gadgets-year/feature">All of the Stuff Gadget Awards 2014 winners</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony KDL-32W706B" alt="Sony KDL-32W706B" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-kdl-32w706b_0.jpg?1417581181" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/gadget-awards-2014/stuff-gadget-awards-2014-these-are-7-best-televisions-year/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/gadget-awards-2014/stuff-gadget-awards-2014-these-are-7-best-televisions-year/feature#comments Gadget Awards 2014 TVs Wed, 03 Dec 2014 00:08:38 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1454519 at http://www.stuff.tv Sony planning fewer smartphones and TVs after falling sales http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation/sony-planning-fewer-smartphones-and-tvs-after-falling-sales/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Smaller, more focused lineups eyed as profits sink - Sony&rsquo;s new PlayStation TV, launching tomorrow in the UK, is essentially the cheap home console version of the PlayStation Vita handheld, albeit without compatibility for many of the Vita&rsquo;s best games. And the aftermarket DekaVita7 takes the PS TV, wraps a large plastic shell around it, and thus turns it back into a portable system. Wait, why?</p> <p>We can&rsquo;t answer that question. Sure, the DekaVita7 offers a larger display than the Vita - it has a 7in IPS LCD, whereas the Vita has just a 5in display - but it lacks touch interactions, is compatible with a small portion of the Vita game library, and scraps the relatively precise design of the Sony handheld in favor of a big slab of plastic.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s priced at nearly &pound;125 (S$253) in Japan, where it&rsquo;ll apparently launch in Q1 next year. Samsung apparently hasn&#39;t pinned down a price point just yet, but surely such a convenience won&rsquo;t be a free addition to the existing value proposition.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-bets-big-on-curved-tv-shows-off-105-inch-uhd-bendable-model/">CNET</a>, <a href="http://www.samsung.com/us/aboutsamsung/news/newsIrRead.do?news_ctgry=irnewsrelease&amp;page=1&amp;news_seq=23687">Samsung</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-s-curved-105in-4k-uhd-tv-priced-us120000/news">Samsung&rsquo;s curved 105in 4K UHD TV priced at US$120,000</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="898" title="Samsung&#039;s curved, bendable 105in 4K TV (Photo: CNET)" alt="Samsung&#039;s curved, bendable 105in 4K TV (Photo: CNET)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-curvedtv-bendable.png?1409910791" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Scope out seven minutes of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare multiplayer </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>November&rsquo;s <em>Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare</em> looks to represent the big shake-up that the shooter series has needed for at least a couple of years now (even if it does seem curiously similar to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/xbox-360/titanfall/review"><em>Titanfall</em></a> in spots), and multiplayer is always a huge component of the experience - so we&rsquo;re extra excited to see this far-future take on it.</p> <p>Check out seven fresh minutes of official footage, which digs deep into the various perks of the exoskeleton, details the ample customization and Pick 13 system, and shows off some of the maps and modes you can expect to explore later this year.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCnoeg_WOko">YouTube</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/call-duty-advanced-warfare/review">Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare hands-on preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TCnoeg_WOko" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung/fully-charged-sphero-s-road-ollie-launched-samsung-s-105in-curved-4k-tv-bendable-and-new-cal#comments 4K Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare Gaming IFA 2014 Robots Samsung Sphero TVs Fri, 05 Sep 2014 06:30:00 +0000 Hafizah Osman 1446695 at http://www.stuff.tv Philips reveals a trio of Android-powered 4K Ambilight TVs http://www.stuff.tv/sg/philips/ifa-2014/philips-reveals-trio-android-powered-4k-ambilight-tvs/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Would sir care for some Google tricks and LED immersion with his Ultra HD content? Serial Twitter leaker <a href="https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/455310263382601728" target="_blank">@evleaks</a>&nbsp;has also revealed the backplate options list for the X2, including four different woods, four leather colour choices and &quot;warm, neutral and cool&quot; colour options.</p> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/moto-360/motorola-moto-360/review" target="_blank">Moto 360</a> is the first circular Android Wear smartwatch; a leak from Best Buy points to a US price of around US$250 (S$312), a 1.5in, 320x290 screen covered by Gorilla Glass 3, waterproofing to 1.1m, and (unsurprisingly) a heart-rate monitor and pedometer.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/moto-360/motorola-moto-360/review" target="_blank">Moto 360 preview: everything you need to know</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Motorola at IFA 2014" alt="Motorola at IFA 2014" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Motorola.jpg?1409533220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="604" height="453" title="Moto 360" alt="Moto 360" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Screen-shot-2014-08-07-at-10.37.14_1.jpg?1409533220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Moto X+1 (X2) colour options" alt="Moto X+1 (X2) colour options" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/evleaks-x2.jpg?1409533220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Panasonic </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Panasonic looks set to focus on home automation this year, sending out an invite to a press conference that includes &quot;connected home entertainment and photography, to smart kitchen appliances, latest beauty products and more.&quot; It&#39;s accompanied by a graphic showing tech being used in different rooms, including the bathroom and kitchen.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Panasonic at IFA 2014" alt="Panasonic at IFA 2014" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/panasonic-ifa.jpg?1409533220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The biggest launch of IFA 2014 &ndash; both literally and figuratively &ndash; is set to be the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Note 4</a>.
