The original owner of the ThinkPad is credited with one of the landmark losses in history - US$8 billion in 1993. The company even took to a few questionable acquisitions including PwC consulting in 2002.

Turning point: The company has since bounced back from its humiliating accolade with a 19th placing in terms of revenue in 2012 according to Fortune, even if it had to sell its beloved ThinkPad business to Lenovo in 2005.
