It&rsquo;s got a lot in common with&nbsp;<em>Halo</em>&nbsp;in terms of gameplay and tone, but this is a far, far grander undertaking.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s because&nbsp;<em>Destiny</em>&nbsp;is also diving into massively multiplayer online (MMO) territory. This is an always-online game in which you team up with mates for story missions, raids and open-world exploring. You randomly encounter other players on your travels and so-called &lsquo;live events&rsquo; are triggered that dynamically bring players together to take on enemies such as the massive spider tank.</p> <p>Think of the shooting action of&nbsp;<em>Halo</em>&nbsp;combined with the addictive loot-gathering of<em>Diablo</em>&nbsp;and MMORPG elements of&nbsp;<em>World of Warcraft</em>&nbsp;and you&rsquo;re just about on the right track.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="The sparrow bike can be called up at any time" alt="Destiny Beta review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Destiny-Beta-Review-7_0.jpg?1406180408" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Destiny Beta vs Alpha </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Those who poured endless hours into the Alpha might be disappointed to discover that a lot of that content returns in this Beta, but there is more besides. Where the Alpha dropped you into the ruined Russian landscape with an already level 4 character, the Beta sees you start at the very beginning, with the intro that will (tweaks allowing) be in the final version of the game.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s when you&rsquo;re introduced to your Ghost, a cuboid robotic companion who accompanies and guides you throughout the entire game. Bungie and Peter Dinklage (from&nbsp;<em>Game of Thrones</em>, who voices the Ghost) were on the receiving end of no little flak for the dialogue and delivery in the Alpha, which was considered by many to sound a bit half-arsed. I didn&rsquo;t really agree with all of that criticism but even I must admit that the delivery in the Beta, which has been made to sound more robotic with beeps and vocal effects, works better. And the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.polygon.com/2014/6/20/5828892/that-wizard-came-from-the-moon-shirt-destiny-bungie" target="_blank">now infamous &ldquo;that wizard came from the Moon!&rdquo;</a>&nbsp;line has gone entirely, which is a massive shame if you ask me.</p> <p>In total you get four story missions in the Beta (none of which were in the Alpha), each of which can be played with up to two mates and come complete with cutscenes that introduce you to the characters and lore of Bungie&rsquo;s brave new gaming universe.</p> <p>The only issue here is that there&rsquo;s a certain amount of repetition in these story missions. They&rsquo;re all based in Old Russia (essentially the only area available in the Beta) and while each takes you to a different section of the map you basically start in the same area for each one, which creates a little déjà vu. This is undoubtedly a game that will involve a fair amount of returning to previously explored areas, but hopefully the level of repetition will be kept in check for the full release.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/littlebigplanet-3/littlebigplanet-3/review" target="_blank">LittleBigPlanet 3: First Play</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Peter Dinklage&#039;s dialogue for your Ghost companion has been tweaked for the beta" alt="Destiny Beta review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Destiny-Beta-Review-8_0.jpg?1406180408" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="The Earth map for the Crucible returns from the Alpha" alt="Destiny Beta review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Destiny-Beta-Review-2_0.jpg?1406180408" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Alpha bits return </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Beyond that you get largely the same content that was in the Alpha. That includes one three-player Strike (essentially a self-contained mission with its own story, bosses and rewards) called The Devil&rsquo;s Lair, which is brilliant fun.</p> <p>You also get to experience the Explore mode, which allows you to - you guessed it - explore the open world environments at your leisure. You&rsquo;ve only got Old Russia to play with here but the environment is pretty massive and packed with secrets - dead Ghosts to reactivate, caves to explore, loot to find and enemies to blow to pieces. There are also small side-missions - typical fetch quests and kill x number of enemies sorts of things, but they&rsquo;re useful for taking you to areas of the map that you might not have otherwise visited and also reward you with increased standing with certain factions. And standing means loot in the form of big guns and stronger armour.</p> <p>Finally there&rsquo;s the Crucible, which is where you take your anger out on other players. The map count has gone up from the two to four, so on top of the Earth and Moon maps you got in the Alpha you can now also kill your friends on Mars and Venus. There&rsquo;s still just the one game mode, Capture (typical three-objective king of the hill), but the action is so tight, fast and addictive you&rsquo;ll likely take no issue with playing for hours straight.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/20-amazing-indie-games-you-can-download-right-now/feature" target="_blank">20 amazing indie games you can download right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/LeDaevD7cEo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Destiny Beta review" alt="Destiny Beta review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Destiny-Beta-Review-10_2.jpg?1406180408" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="3200" height="1800" title="Destiny Beta review" alt="Destiny Beta review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/destiny-alpha-first-play-crucible_0_2.jpg?1406180408" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Creating your first character </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In&nbsp;<em>Destiny</em>&nbsp;you play as a Guardian, tasked with protecting what little is left of humanity against four alien races (two of which, the Hive and Fallen, make an appearance in the Beta). That means the action itself is deeply<em>Halo</em>-like, with a welcome dose of extra heft to the weapons. This is sci-fi, of course, but the feel of the guns is realistically solid and terrifically bombastic, especially when you get to the shotguns and heavy weapons such as the huge machine guns and rocket launchers.</p> <p>Thanks to every player having a double-jump move, battles are very vertical, both in the open world and in the Crucible. There are few greater gaming joys than leaping from a vantage point to a spot directly behind your enemy and stabbing them in the back.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-3/dark-souls-ii/review" target="_blank">Dark Souls II review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="There are millimetres between life and death in the Crucible" alt="Destiny Beta review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Destiny-Beta-Review-5_0.jpg?1406180408" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> You&#039;ve got until 27th July to play the beta </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Beta is open to PS3 and PS4 players right now. At least taking it to the streets feels somewhat refreshing, and makes a bit of sense given how heavily armed criminals are becoming in the US, where Hardline is based.</p> <p dir="ltr">We got the chance to play the game during E3 2014, though it was a short session of around 10 minutes. Publisher Electronic Arts really took the time to sell the premise though. Everyone had to &ldquo;register&rdquo; at a police desk and have our mug shots taken, before being led into an office to await instructions. An alarm then went off and we had to take up battle stations instead. In that short span of time we went from cop to robber to SWAT team member, which is somewhat like the roles we can play in the game.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-3/e3-2014/far-cry-4-first-play/feature">Far Cry 4 First Play</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ex1GlZS-t7c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paper Chase </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">My time with the game was spent on a multiplayer session, where I played a policeman in a very fun game mode dubbed Blood Money. This challenge requires teams to grab bags of cash from the middle of the map and bring it back to their respective bases. Yes, it&rsquo;s essentially capture-the-flag, but in the context of a bank robbery - the criminals want to escape with the money, and the cops need to get it back.</p> <p dir="ltr">However, there&rsquo;s a twist - you can steal money back from your opponent&rsquo;s base, meaning games can actually go on for quite some time. Of course, I only learnt about this after the game ended. Many of us were too busy exploring the sandbox game area of downtown LA to actually try and win (we lost, unsurprisingly). It&rsquo;s not very large geographically, but there are tons of nooks and crannies you can hide in, such as carparks and back alleys. The depth of the environment was really very engaging.</p> <p>I elected to zip around the city on a motorbike, which was really quite enjoyable until I got run over and crushed by an armoured vehicle. This prompted me to actually try the combat instead, where you spawn, buy equipment, and run off to try and shoot the other fellow in the face. You can also customise your weapon with accessories to suit your playing style, much like previous Battlefields. I don&rsquo;t know why, but I actually felt it was slightly reminiscent of <em>CounterStrike</em> in style. Perhaps it was the non-military setting and uniform.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/first-play-destiny-alpha-release/feature">Destiny First Play</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="7565" height="4543" title="Multiplayer madness allows you to operate a variety of vehicles" alt="First Play: Battlefield Hardline" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/battlefield_hardline_7_wm.jpg?1403144338" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> THE BOTTOM LINE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Hardline might not be what hardcore Battlefield fans are looking for, but it definitely is a breath of fresh air in terms of premise, and heaps of fun. You are recruited by &#39;the Traveller&#39;; a mysterious white, spherical entity who commands you to investigate and destroy these threats before humanity is eradicated.</p> <p>Your first task upon booting up is to choose your class, picking between Titan, Hunter and Warlock. Broadly speaking, these are <em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s versions of the standard soldier, stealth and mage classes, and each has a different mix of abilities. Our Titan, for example, could smash the ground and dissolve enemies in a bombastic special move. We teamed up with a Hunter, whose special ability was a flaming pistol that would disintegrate enemies with its solar light. Each of these abilities had to recharge, which took time, so they could be used only fleetingly in combat.</p> <p>After choosing a class, another MMO-style feature presented itself - the character-creation screen. Bungie&rsquo;s offering has the same options as most games we&rsquo;ve seen: customisable genders, races, faces etc. The difference here is in the exquisite details and animations:&nbsp;<em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s characters look absolutely stunning.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/fifa-15-first-play/review">We&#39;ve played FIFA 15 - and it&#39;s looking great so far</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4yg0Jk1WZsE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Into the Breach </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Once you&rsquo;ve created a character, you&rsquo;re immediately thrown into a tutorial mission. This takes place in Old Russia - a beautiful but decrepit snowy wasteland with gorgeous features such as abandoned space shuttles, rusting industrial complexes and Northern lights punctuating the background.</p> <p>The game quickly tells you to press the DualShock 4&rsquo;s touch pad to bring up the Traveller - the small orb that&rsquo;s recruited you to save the universe. On the most basic level, the Traveller silently points to your objective, but it also vocalises the game&rsquo;s back story in actor Peter &#39;Tyrion Lannister&#39; Dinklage&rsquo;s familiar tones.</p> <p>The Traveller informs you that you&rsquo;re in Russia to find out what The Fallen (a mysterious alien race) are protecting - thankfully, it&rsquo;s only a matter of seconds before you come across one of them in the flesh. When you lock them in your sights, vital information immediately appears onscreen: a number denoting their class (in this case a &ldquo;2&rdquo;), the name of the unit, and a health bar.</p> <p>Doing what comes naturally in a first-person shooter, we begin to fire at the enemy drone with our shotgun - the first shot takes off 75% of its health, the second finishes it off. The brief battle startles another couple of Fallen units, but rather than come straight at us, they demonstrate Bungie&rsquo;s famously high level of artificial intelligence by ducking behind the nearest cover and seemingly communicating with each other before launching a coordinated attack. Fortunately, we&#39;ve switched to the plasma rifle by this point, enabling us to dispatch them fairly easily and pick up one of the game&rsquo;s collectable &#39;Grimoire&#39; cards.</p> <p>Suddenly, a massive Fallen ship descends from the sky and fires powerful plasma rounds at us, depleting our rechargeable shield and sending us scuttling off to find cover.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/forza-5/first-play-forza-horizon-2/feature">Forza Horizon 2: First Play</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QnSYuJQvzzI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> You Say Halo, I Say Destiny </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While <em>Destiny</em> is the result of Bungie attempting to break away from its <em>Halo</em> roots, the DNA of the famous Xbox shooter is undoubtedly present, particularly when it comes to its gunplay. In fact, if a layman played the game without knowing anything about it, they&rsquo;d probably think it was a <em>Halo</em> sequel of some description.</p> <p>On a basic level, the shotgun boasts many of the same qualities as the Halo equivalent - the same distinctive circular aiming reticule, the wide spread and the slow reload speed. The melee strikes, mapped to the R1 button on PS4, feel powerful and fun to land. There&rsquo;s a shield that recharges whenever you&rsquo;re not getting hit. These are all features reminiscent of the <em>Halo</em> games that Bungie produced, and which defined Xbox consoles more than any other series.</p> <p>Not everything is <em>Halo</em>-inspired though: Bungie has definitely learned a lot from role-playing games too. When you shoot at and hit enemies, numbers denoting the health damage pour out of them like lost blood. Ammunition is relatively sparse, so you have to scavenge around for loot (although far less so than in something like <em>Borderlands 2</em>). You can spawn a vehicle when you&rsquo;re out in the open to travel around quickly. And there&rsquo;s a levelling system that sees you unlocking new weapons, abilities and power-ups.</p> <p>These are all features that have appeared in other games before, but like Bruce Lee taking various types of martial arts and only keeping the stuff that worked, Bungie has pilfered the best gaming ideas from the last 10 years and applied them to their excellent shooting mechanics.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-3/evil-within-first-play/review">The Evil Within - First Play of Resident Evil mastermind&nbsp;Shinji Mikami&#39;s new survival horror</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1920" height="1080" title="Got &#039;em!" alt="Destiny alpha release - First Play" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/destiny-alpha-first-play-006.jpg?1402650540" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Fireteam Bravo </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Continuing with the alpha, we decide to engage a few more enemies, this time of a higher Level 5 rating.</p> <p>As we approach our objective, we come across another player attempting the same mission. He would have been quite a challenge to take on alone, but he&#39;s no match for two people working together.</p> <p>Things seem to be going well - we work together for a while without having to communicate verbally, and within the first 10 minutes of hooking up, we&rsquo;ve killed enough Fallen to reach Level 4. We return to the world map and spy a Level 6 mission called &#39;The Devil&rsquo;s Lair&#39;, but as we&#39;re currently stuck on Level 4 we instead head back into Old Russia for a Level 4 Exploration mission around the Cosmodrome. </p> <p>In this mode, you have to look out for beacons dotted around the world, then scan them and follow the mission to receive a reward. This could be to kill a certain number of enemies, find something hidden, or recover treasures from around the map. These quests are also interrupted with random events that you can choose to engage with or ignore, such as a contingency of Fallen landing and you only having a limited amount of time to kill them.</p> <p>This more free-form gameplay is generally fun, but it does show up one element of <em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s structure that could frustrate, and that&rsquo;s the &#39;grind&#39;. It&rsquo;s something that MMO players will be familiar with; fighting off loads of enemies just to level up your character so that they&rsquo;re powerful enough to engage in the next part of the story. The skirmishes are great, especially one fight against a giant Noble Devil Walker, but there&#39;s a lot of killing and fetching to do before we reach Level 6.</p> <p>It&#39;s here that the game&rsquo;s difficulty ramps up significantly, too. We come across some incredibly strong regenerating Hive Knight enemies that two people simply can&#39;t kill, so we&#39;re left with no other option but to desperately run past the gangs of enemies in a cowardly attempt to reach the objective. The tactic works, but it doesn&rsquo;t feel particularly fair or satisfying. Fortunately, we manage to find a third person for the team within a matter of minutes, but when we do engage in combat, we frequently end up dying and needing to be revived by someone (if they don&rsquo;t get to you within around 40 seconds, you respawn in a safe area).&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/kill-your-productivity-stuffs-top-22-free-browser-games/feature">Kill your productivity - Stuff&#39;s top 30 free browser games</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/g16Z1z_2ZPA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Crucible </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s competitive multiplayer mode is housed in an area of the map called The Crucible. So we&rsquo;ll have to wait until the alpha goes public on the 12th to try it out.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/tom-clancy-s-division/review">Why we&#39;re so excited about Tom Clancy&#39;s The Division</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="3200" height="1800" title="The Crucible" alt="Destiny alpha release - first play preview" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/destiny-alpha-first-play-crucible.jpg?1402650540" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Destiny (alpha release) - the verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Based on what we&rsquo;ve played of <em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s alpha build, we&rsquo;re extremely confident about the game&rsquo;s overall quality. Though he has a beard, he&#39;s clearly no fixie-riding hipster, so we decide to trust him. But before legging it into the nearest hut, we assign our weapons to shortcuts on the d-pad. Not that we get many. There&#39;s&nbsp;a revolver and a shotgun, plus a crossbow which can be equipped with various bolts, but hardly any ammunition.&nbsp;</p> <p>We also get a lantern, but using it tends to attract the undead like milkshake-hungry boys to Kelis&#39; yard. Plus, we get some matches. These are essential, because while a single headshot will down most enemies, they won&#39;t stay down for long unless you set fire to them.&nbsp;</p> <p>We follow the good doctor inside in search of safety and soon meet his brother, but before long we&#39;re being attacked by shuffling maniacs and tearing down corridors away from hideous somethings. It plays nicely enough, and looks good, but it&#39;s not exactly groundbreaking.</p> <p>And then things start to get weird. A ghostly hooden figure called Ruvik appears in front of us and suddenly the door that we were heading for is gone. We turn round but the door behind us has also disappeared. This Ruvik, who the doctor seems to know, appears to be shifting the environment around us.</p> <p>We escape, somehow, only to plunge down a chute into some kind of abandoned warehouse filled with chest-high water. Only it&#39;s not water, it&#39;s blood. Nothing appears to be moving (other than the flies) and we&#39;re in no immediate danger. So we look around. Pulling a lever disgorges another corpses into the pool. Another one drains the blood away, revealing some much-needed ammo.&nbsp;</p> <p>And then, just as we&#39;re starting to relax, we trigger an explosive trap and die. We were told by Bethesda reps beforehand that in the final game you&#39;ll be able to save at regular points, but in our demo we&#39;re reliant on checkpoints. So it&#39;s back to the blood pool for us.&nbsp;</p> <p>The traps are a recurring hazard in <em>The Evil Within</em>, and they can also be used to your advantage - assuming you spot them in time. If you do, you can disarm them (via a simple mini-game) and salvage the parts; these parts can then be used for upgrades, presumably to your weapons, though this mechanic was disabled in the demo. Alternatively you can leave them armed and use them against the zombies.</p> <p>On the second time round, we make it as far the only door out. And then - bam! - Rovik&#39;s there again, the door&#39;s gone and we&#39;re trapped. Worse still, all of those piled-up corpses are now moving. Oh, and when Rovik touches us, it drains our health to one bar. We don&#39;t last long.</p> <p>On the third go, we&#39;re prepared. We use the traps against the zombies, ducking under tripwares and blowing them apart. As we set fire to the last one, the door reappears and we&#39;re outta there.</p> <p>Not that it makes much difference. Within a few minutes we&#39;ve encountered a hideous spider-demon-girl-thing who seemingly can&#39;t be killed. Running away is the only option - at one point, we even have to dive under a closing door, <em>Indiana Jones</em>-style. It&#39;s heart-pumping stuff, but a bit on the relentless side and much of it passes too quickly for us to really appreciate it.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/first-play-driveclub/feature">First Play - Driveclub</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Arachnophobia has nothing on this" alt="The Evil Within: First Play preview" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/evil-within-game-review-002.jpg?1401887846" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="He looks pretty annoyed about something..." alt="The Evil Within: First Play preview" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/evil-within-game-review-005.jpg?1401887846" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SEEKING ASYLUM </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In fairness, chapter eight is a little less frantic. It&#39;s set in a mansion which appears to have been some kind of hospital. The doctor&#39;s back, with his brother, but they dart through a pair of metal doors before we can catch up with them. The doors lock behind them and when we notice that the mechanism is missing a few parts, we realise that we&#39;re going to have to find them within the distinctly uninviting bowels of the mansion.&nbsp;</p> <p>Now by this time we know what&#39;s coming, so we don&#39;t really want to do that. But at the same time, we want to know who this doctor is, what he&#39;s got to hide, how his brother fits into it and who Ruvik is. That, and we&#39;re on work time here, with very little desire to head back to the office. So onwards we creep.</p> <p>The mansion is less overtly grim than the warehouse in chapter four, but every bit as dangerous. Most rooms contain zombies, Rovik keeps popping up and there are a couple of set-piece QTEs to navigate. In one of these, we&#39;re dragged towards a set of whirring, whirling, grinding rollers and have to shoot out the power switch before we&#39;re turned into paté. We manage it the second time.</p> <p>At one point, we stumble across a room which appears to be a lab of some kind. There&#39;s a brain on the table, and we soon learn that we&#39;re supposed to stick a probe into it in order to... make something happen. This we do, and are rewarded with a sort of holographic playback of a conversation between the doctor and his brother. Later on, we find another of these brains but plunging the probe in merely ends up killing us.</p> <p>And that&#39;s doubly annoying, because checkpoints on this level are few and far between, so we end up playing and replaying the same section again and again. It&#39;s presumably not a problem that will exist in the finished version, but it rather spoils our experience of the level and we eventually give up rather than spend another 20 minutes retreading the same path and dispatching the same zombies. &nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/batman-arkham-knight/review">Everything you need to know about Batman Arkham Knight and its amazing Batmobile</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Do we want to go down there? We wanted to play off of that archetype and find a depth in that character.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/destiny/review">Everything you need to know about Destiny, Bungie&#39;s follow up to Halo</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="The New Order takes inspiration from the original Wolfenstein 3D" alt="I made this - Wolfenstein: The New Order" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/I-made-this-wolfenstein-new-order-002.jpg?1401181110" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> TAKING TIPS FROM TARANTINO </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There&rsquo;s a lot of Nazi ideology that&rsquo;s so bizarre it feels like fiction, which definitely inspired what kind of story we wanted to tell and the world we created. We certainly didn&#39;t want to shy away from the over-the-top craziness that makes Wolfenstein what it is, but the last thing we want to do is make light of the immense suffering that was caused.</p> <p>A first-person shooter is incredibly fast-paced in terms of the gameplay, so the story has to be very efficiently delivered. Thankfully we have a lot of experience in doing that, so we know where we can stretch it and where it has to be condensed. It goes from incredibly intense gunplay to sections where it&#39;s about interacting with characters and exploring.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/head-hands-and-eyes-sony-s-project-morpheus/feature">Head, hands and eyes on with Sony&#39;s Project Morpheus VR headset</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="The story is integral to Wolfenstein: The New Order" alt="I made this - Wolfenstein: The New Order" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/I-made-this-wolfenstein-new-order-003.jpg?1401181110" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OUR LEGACY </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&rsquo;re very passionate about not only creating a compelling story but also merging that with the gameplay in an unobtrusive fashion. Blazkowicz, the American-Polish hero with an impossibly square jaw and a taste for shredding cannon-fodder Nazis with chunky guns. Just don&rsquo;t ask him what B.J. stands for. And the game&rsquo;s cartoonish Nazis better worry, because while B.J. has been something of a blank in previous <em>Wolfensteins</em>, this time they&rsquo;ve given him - wait for it - a personality. While hardly revolutionary,&nbsp;the addition of such staples of the modern FPS as iron sights and cover mechanics should bring it kicking and screaming into the year 2014.&nbsp;</p> <p>That&rsquo;s not all, though. There are going to be opportunities to take alternative paths through levels and some RPG-like character development to unlock extra skills. Players can also take a break from full-frontal assaults by sneaking around and knifing enemies in the back. We say scientist, but in Deathshead&rsquo;s mind science means dreaming up hideous ways to torture people rather than figuring out how to cure cancer. And as a result,&nbsp;<em>The New Order </em>is looking to be, even by <em>Wolfenstein</em>&rsquo;s gory standards, a very bloody game.</p> <p>In fact, in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/microsoft/first-play-wolfenstein-new-order/news" target="_blank">hands-on review of the game</a>, we described some of the early scenes as horrific. Adding to the sadism is Deathshead&rsquo;s new henchwoman Frau Engels, who - judging by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJcryiu1hCg&amp;list=PLtqND44qlLQSm03Y9Z4TeLMeDUyf97tPF" target="_blank">this trailer</a> - is already looking like a particularly chilling and memorable enemy.</p> <p>All of which raises the question of quite how... tasteful any of this is. To be fair, it&#39;s a modern FPS game, so taste doesn&#39;t necessarily come into it. After all, the likes of <em>Halo</em>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/killzone-shadow-fall/review" target="_blank"><em>Killzone</em></a> and the forthcoming <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/destiny/review" target="_blank"><em>Destiny</em></a> wouldn&#39;t look much different if the enemies were Nazis rather than aliens. But on the other hand, they aren&#39;t Nazis - they&#39;re aliens.</p> <p>In contrast,&nbsp;<em>Wolfenstein: The New Order</em>&nbsp;treads a fine line between presenting a genuinely chilling look at what the world would be like if the Nazis had triumphed, and offering up a load of camp Nazis to gun down in an entertaining FPS. It wasn&#39;t a problem in earlier installments, where realism was never an issue. But it could be this time round. We&#39;ll have to wait until we&#39;ve played the full game to determine if MachineGames has got the balance right, or if it merely makes for an uncomfortably awkward experience.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/microsoft/first-play-wolfenstein-new-order/news" target="_blank">Hands on with Wolfenstein: The New Order</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OJcryiu1hCg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Frau Engels will be a key character" alt="Wolfenstein: The New Order review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/wolfenstein-the-new-order-console-game-playstation-xbox-review-003.jpg?1398485751" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sounds of the &#039;60s </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><em>Wolfenstein: The New Order</em> is going to be one hell of a noisy game what with all of the shooting and explosions and whatnot, but what&rsquo;s really got us excited on the audio front is the music. You play Aiden Pearce, a hacker vigilante who goes to <em>labra-war</em> against a sinister group of <em>cyber-terrierists</em>.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> beagle eyed </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The game starts off indoors, and a short mission leads you outside, so you&#39;re sat down and comfortable with the controls before you get your first look at Chicago - a trick that&#39;s at least as old as <em>The Wizard of Oz</em>, and still highly effective.&nbsp;Chicago looks fantastic on the PS4 build we played: dirty, windy, atmospheric and enormous. The painstaking detail in which it&rsquo;s been rendered makes it feel endlessly explorable, and it&rsquo;s particularly lovely in the rain. You can&rsquo;t beat good rain in a game, especially if you&rsquo;re zooming through it on a motorbike. </p> <p>The CtOS data you can overlay on your vision is unobtrusive, and can be quickly toggled on and off to allow you to scan your fellow citizens. Unless they&rsquo;re part of the plot, the people around you are procedurally generated, and the short bios that pop up about each of them allow you to make snap decisions about whether to leave them be (if they&rsquo;re, say, a nurse), or (if they&rsquo;re, say, a hedge fund manager) to hack their bank account, steal their car, drive their car into a lamp post and then blow it up in front of them. As in any game featuring large numbers of NPCs, you&rsquo;re going to hear the same lines of dialogue repeated by different people all around the city.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-3/alien-isolation/review" target="_blank"><em>Alien: Isolation</em> will have you weeping with space-terror</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pinscher movement " alt="Watch Dogs" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/WD_Relaunch_Beautyshot_Canal.jpg?1398825967" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> corgi of destruction </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>At one point in the story, we used Aiden&rsquo;s considerable talents to lay a trap for some enemies. Of course, that&rsquo;s not to say you can&rsquo;t just run into a situation and start brapping people with an assault rifle, if that&rsquo;s the way you want to play it.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/batman-arkham-knight/review" target="_blank">Everything we know about <em>Batman: Arkham Knight</em></a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Must... think... more.. dog.. puns..." alt="Watch Dogs Bedbug" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/BEDBUG.jpg?1398825967" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> mirror, signal, miniature schnauzer </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Driving ranges from realistic to cartoony, depending on what motor you&rsquo;ve got. Whether you&rsquo;re hunting an enemy or being chased by the po-po, having the CtOS on your side adds an extra element. Pursuit becomes all about leading your opponent into a trap where you can raise some bollards, change the traffic lights or blow up a steam valve, snaring them in a pile-up so you can either start shooting at them or speed off into the night. Stick said cyberdrug in your ear and the real world fades away and is replaced by a hallucinatory mini-game: in one, you drive a flaming hot rod through a burning landscape, racking up points for the number of flame-headed zombies you mow down. In another, you stamp around Chicago in a huge mechanical spider, stamping on police cars and blowing things up with a Gatling gun. After a couple of hours of serious story, it&rsquo;s just what you need, and when your bloodthirst is slaked, you go back to the normal game. This is the closest you&#39;ll ever get to a virtual tour of the Nostromo. While the name&#39;s different and you&#39;re on a space station rather than a ship, everything about its design is informed by Scott&#39;s original movie setting.</p> <p>Cold white walls abound, CRT monitors blink through the darkness, and flashing lights guide you nervously through claustrophobic corridors from one room to the next. The hospital looks like the Nostromo&#39;s med bay, supersized. In the dining area, a table is littered with retro-sloganed cereal boxes and kids drawings &ndash; suggesting that whole families lived here at one time. Their current whereabouts will surely form a major plot point. (We&#39;re predicting &#39;oozetastic cocoon&#39;.)</p> <p>Other nods to the original flick include multi-lingual signs which play a vital role in navigation, all manner of workstation switches and levers, and various containers, gels and tools with which you&#39;re able to splice together additional melee weaponry. Fox supplied the devs with 3TB of unused <em>Alien</em> material, and it&#39;s evidently been put to fantastic use.

Ingeniously, this looks like the future as imagined in the &#39;70s and &#39;80s, rather than the pristine, touchscreen-centric version popularised by modern telly and cinema. It&#39;s Tom Baker over David Tennant, Peter Weller as opposed to Joel Kinnaman.&nbsp;</p> <p>And HD really enables that setting to sing &ndash; as well as injecting the eponymous lead baddie with an entirely fresh sense of fear. The biggest risk being taken by Creative Assembly is unleashing a game with no fire button upon a market saturated with shooters. Evidently, the idea here is to go in the opposite direction to colossal xeno-flop <em><a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/aliens-colonial-marines" target="_blank">Aliens: Colonial Marines</a></em>, and that has to be considered a positive. Instead of conventional weaponry, your only hope while navigating the Sevastopol &ndash; at least to begin with &ndash; is a motion tracker, a flashlight, and a limp-limbed melee attack.</p> <p>In a potential masterstroke, <em>Isolation</em> isn&#39;t about killing the alien, but outlasting it. And the lack of enemy scripting isn&#39;t the only thing ensuring you a tough ride; it learns from your behaviour, too. Try to use the same route through each environment, or attack with the same cobbled-together object too often, and Creative Assembly says it&#39;ll adjust its tactics in response. How exactly remains to be seen, but it sounds fascinating.

</p> <p>And when the acid lady does appear as a blip on your motion tracker? Well, it&#39;s as terrifying as you both hoped and dreaded. Particularly when the signal then disappears again, inspiring <em>Blair Witch</em>-esque shrieks of &#39;where the eff is it?!&#39; in your mind. Even more frightful are the occasions when you catch the shadow of its tail draping down from above, or switch on the flashlight to spot it sliding past a doorway. It&#39;s going to be challenging to maintain that intensity and fear across 10-12 hours, but the initial signs are very promising.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/first-play-child-light/feature" target="_blank">First Play: Child Of Light</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="At this point, you&#039;ll probably want to hide" alt="Alien: Isolation PlayStation Xbox game review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alien-isolation-game-playstation-xbox-pc-screenshot-009.jpg?1397877806" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Not what you want to see when you enter a dark room" alt="Alien: Isolation PlayStation Xbox game review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alien-isolation-game-playstation-xbox-pc-screenshot-002.jpg?1397877806" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="You can craft your own weapons on the Sevastopol" alt="Alien: Isolation PlayStation Xbox game review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alien-isolation-game-playstation-xbox-pc-screenshot-003.jpg?1397877806" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> THE INSIDE VIEW </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A critical component in <em>Isolation</em>&#39;s fear factor is the lack of a HUD, which senior designer Gary Napper says would dilute the experience. &ldquo;I love playing games where I&#39;m shooting stuff and I see numbers bouncing off heads,&rdquo; <a href="http://www.officialplaystationmagazine.co.uk/2014/03/10/alien-isolation-gameplay-hands-on-feeling-the-horror-on-ps4-with-creative-assembly/3/" target="_blank">he told Official PlayStation Magazine</a>. &ldquo;But we&#39;ve made a game that&#39;s all about atmosphere and tension and horror, and you can&#39;t really apply that to it.&rdquo;</p> <p>Senior producer Jonathan Court, meanwhile, is keen to point out that while the alien&#39;s behaviour is unscripted, the narrative is not. The end result is not quite the game we were hoping for, but go in with slightly lowered expectations and this is still an experience packed with enjoyable action.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a Sony&#39;s third-gen console was released in 2006; to put that in context, the iPhone didn&#39;t arrive until 2007, Android first appeared in 2008 and the iPad in 2010. And since the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/sony-ps4/review" target="_blank">PlayStation 4</a> debuted in November, it&#39;s no longer even Sony&#39;s most powerful games machine.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/mark-wilson" title="View user profile.">Mark Wilson</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 1.
