Available in Classic Black or Sport Lime, the watch core actually pops out of the silicon strap, also in pink and white. It&#39;s not designed to do this everyday (two of the prototypes we saw had broken home buttons) more that if you fancy a change after a few months, it can be done. The strap itself has a clasp to keep it in place and though we prefer a standard watch strap as on the G Watch, that&#39;s down to personal preference and it does at least feel secure.&nbsp;</p> <p>This is a big watch with a 1.6in screen and a fair amount of bezel. Essentially if you&#39;re moving from a chunky, colourful Swatch it&#39;ll be an easier transition than from your fancy Breitling.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&#39;s plenty to love, though. Elsewhere, the SmartWatch 3 is the first Android Wear device with GPS. Completing the killer combo is 4GB of on-board storage and a standalone Walkman app so that the SmartWatch 3 can be paired with Bluetooth headphones to track runs and provide tunes without a smartphone.</p> <p>Neither was ready for our early play and compatibility with third party fitness apps hasn&#39;t been confirmed yet but Sony will hopefully give us more details during IFA. With a price of &euro;229 (no SG price yet), that looks like a very good deal - a TomTom Runner Cardio, for instance, costs S$449 and won&#39;t even tell you the weather.</p> <p><strong>Update 16/09/14</strong>: prepare S$298, because that&#39;s how much you&#39;ll spend on the Smartwatch 3. This is significantly lower than what we expected from the&nbsp;&euro;229 price tag. Patience is required, as the Sony smartwatch will be available from end October 2014.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung/samsung-gear-live/review">Samsung Gear Live smartwatch review&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="If lime green or candy pink don&#039;t work out, there&#039;s always black " alt="Sony SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sw3-open-on-phone_0.jpg?1410859780" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Clasptastic SmartWatch 3 " alt="Sony SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sw3-clasp.jpg?1410859780" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony SmartWatch 3 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 1.6in 320x320 TFT LCD touchscreen<br /><strong>Processor</strong>: 1.2GHz quad-core ARM A7<br /><strong>RAM</strong>: 512MB &nbsp;<br /><strong>OS</strong>: Android Wear&nbsp;<br /><strong>Battery</strong>: 420mAh (claimed 2 days)&nbsp;<br /><strong>Storage</strong>: 4GB&nbsp;<br /><strong>Water &amp; Dust Resistance</strong>: IP68&nbsp;<br /><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, NFC&nbsp;<br /><strong>Compatibility</strong>: Android 4.3+&nbsp;<br /><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 36 x 10 x 51mm<br /><strong>Weight:</strong> 38g (Classic), 35.7g (Sport)&nbsp;<br /><strong>Colours:</strong> Classic (Black) and Sport (Lime), straps avaialble in white and pink</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> No Cradle Needed </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It says a lot about the competition when we get all flustered over a microUSB port.&nbsp; After months of losing and finding the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/moto-360/motorola-moto-360/review">G Watch</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung/samsung-gear-live/review">Gear Live&#39;s</a>&nbsp;charging cradles, no wonder we got a bit giddy when we saw that the SmartWatch 3 had kept at least one feature of its predecessor, the otherwise&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/smartwatch/sony-smartwatch-2/review">frustrating SmartWatch 2</a>.</p> <p>It&#39;s the first Android Wear watch that you can just stick your smartphone&#39;s microUSB cable in. As with other Android Wear devices, there&#39;s two big functions. The watchface, to show the time, which can be swapped for other designs. And notifications which come through from your smartphone via Bluetooth - phone calls, texts, emails, social media alerts. Anything that appears in your notifications pulldown or as a banner on your Android (4.3+) shows up on the SmartWatch 3&#39;s screen. Plus Google Now&#39;s genius calendar, search and location based updates when it thinks you need them.</p> <p>We got to see Facebook and weather alerts in action during our hands on but this is familiar stuff to anyone who has used an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/lg/lg-g-watch/review">LG G Watch</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung/samsung-gear-live/review">Samsung Gear Live</a>. For more details on what Android Wear watches&nbsp;can do, head to our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/android-wear/review">in-depth review of the OS</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>Sony has tweaked Android Wear more than most. As well as the Walkman app, it also adds its Lifelog app, TV Sideview and a remote camera app. Lifelog is designed to let you track the usual fitness metrics - steps, distance, calories - alongside entertainment and media info. What movies you&#39;ve watched, music you&#39;ve listened to, games you&#39;ve played or places you&#39;ve been. These appear on a timeline which will sync across to your Xperia Z3.</p> <p>Is Sony gunning to beat Facebook at its own lifelogging game? Its ambitions are probably smaller than that but we&#39;ll be keeping an eye on Lifelog to see what Sony does with all that data. &nbsp;</p> <p>TV Sideview is an app borrowed from Xperia phones that lets you see what&#39;s on the box on the SmartWatch 3 with wrist-based remote controls too. And the remote camera app will work with Xperia phones and accessories like <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/sony-cyber-shot-dsc-qx10/review">Sony&#39;s QX10 lens</a>.</p> <p>So Android Wear is up for grabs, after all, but Sony&#39;s done well to keep its tinkering to a minimum. The growing number of third party apps can take care of the rest.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/android-wear/review/">Android Wear OS review&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Go on, shackle yourself to those Facebook (t)wits " alt="Sony SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sw3-facebook.jpg?1410859780" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Classic watchface x date = smartwatch win " alt="Sony SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sw3-clockface.jpg?1410859780" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Standard Android Wear settings " alt="Sony SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sw3-settings.png?1410859780" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Sporty SmartWatch with a sleek Xperia Z3 " alt="Sony SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sw3-with-phone.jpg?1410859780" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SmartBand Talk </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The SmartBand Talk, Sony&#39;s&nbsp;&euro;159 wearable e-paper screen on a silicon strap, is a curious beast.</p> <p>It&#39;s not as stylish as a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/jawbone/jawbone-up24/review">Jawbone UP </a>or as shiny and futuristic as a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung-gear-fit/review">Samsung Gear Fit</a>. But then again it&#39;s not as cheap as some of the other basic smartbands it resembles - like the incoming &pound;80 (S$165)&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/acer/acer-liquid-leap-smartband-hands/news">Acer Liquid Leap</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>With a 288x128 e-paper screen that&#39;s non touch and an odd mix of features it&#39;s stuck somewhere in the middle. The altimeter is great as that means the SmartBand can track when you&#39;re going up stairs as well as the usual steps and distance to add to your Lifelog. Auto sleep detect is a nice addition too as on Sony&#39;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/mwc-2014/hands-sonys-life-logging-smartband-swr10-fitness-band/feature">first SmartBand</a> this mode had to be activated by a button press. IP68 dust and waterproofing is another plus.&nbsp;</p> <p>And it can talk. Well, you can talk to it. The SmartBand can handle calls, with a mic, speaker, HD Voice tech and a dash of Dick Tracey.&nbsp;</p> <p>But there&#39;s no standalone GPS like the SmartWatch 3. The 70mAh battery will last three days of normal usage, according to Sony, which isn&#39;t really good enough considering the screen. And in our hands on time with the admittedly unfinished software, it looked slow and very, very basic indeed. </p> <p>We&#39;re willing to have our minds changed when we test the final device. For now, we&#39;re more excited about the affordable, practical, Google Now-powered SmartWatch 3.</p> <p><strong>Update 16/09/14</strong>: In Singapore, the SmartBand Talk&#39;s price has been confirmed as S$228. Close enough to the European pricing, but some would expect an under S$200 price tag for this basic smartwatch. Working with wrist trees - to illustrate the size of the smallest to biggest female wrists and the smallest to biggest male wrists - the team realised that a square display and a form overmoulded with rubber created large gaps where the straps met the body. The fit was better with the straps on hinges &ndash;&nbsp;but still not perfect.</p> <p>With the Model Shop&#39;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/3d-printers-go-head-printhead/feature" target="_blank">MakerBot Replicator</a>, alongside higher res Objet printers, designers could make low fidelity models on their lunch breaks. But they didn&#39;t just 3D print these square form factors, they spent time and energy making working models that each ran early versions of the software. UI screens and watch faces were also tweaked on-screen then printed onto the back of glass and slotted in to the prototype housing for usability and readability tests.</p> <p>Ultimately, though, none made the cut.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; These all feel like a gadget. They look like a gadget. So we said - we need to reset, we need to take a step back,&quot; says Dickon Isaacs, Design Director. </p> <p>We&#39;re beginning to think Motorola just 100% hates gadgets, when he explains the allure of the circle.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot;Time has always been a circle,&quot; says Isaacs as he points to a whiteboard with sketches of square screens, fully circular screens and Motorola&#39;s final choice. &quot;Sundials. The first pocket watch. Wristwatches. Analogue watches. 80 per cent of all watches sold globally are round.&nbsp;There&#39;s a lot of strength inherent in the material, stainless steel, but also, the circle is an incredibly strong structure from an engineering perspective.&quot;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Draw a watch and you get a circle " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-4_0_0.jpg?1410486801" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="See-through smartwatch! And in the last few months, rivals such as <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/lg/lg-g-watch-r/review">LG&#39;s G Watch R</a>,&nbsp;with a truly round display, have popped up&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;but sporting chunkier bezels. We think Motorola made the right choice.</p> <p>The round display, round form factor and slim bezels wouldn&#39;t have been possible without the &#39;slice&#39;, as Moto execs call it. &quot; We could have put the drivers outside, that would make a perfectly round display but definitely not a round watch,&quot; says Lior Ron, VP Product Management. &quot; There would be drivers and big bezels outside the display.&quot; </p> <p>Explaining why Motorola didn&#39;t go the G Watch R route, Isaacs adds: &quot; If you design with this component but try to keep a pure object, it isn&#39;t compelling, it doesn&#39;t feel modern. The proportions of the border aren&#39;t great. We wanted something that felt more elegant.&quot; </p> <p>It also passes the wrist tree test, helping with the overall fit of the watch. Wicks tells us that the placement of the display drivers means that the watchbands can be attached closer to the centre of your wrist and this gives a more versatile range of comfortable fit across different wrist sizes.&nbsp;</p> <p>To fully &quot;achieve round&quot;, Motorola engineers had to build the custom display from scratch and work hard to fit the battery, processor and sensors into the circular, 11.5mm high housing.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Once Moto had agreed on round, then the real challenge began " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-8_0.jpg?1410486801" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Mike Yankey, our Moto tour guide, with an Objet printer and wearing Moto Hint" alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-13_0.jpg?1410486801" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The moment has arrived. Our first hands on time with the Moto 360 in a dark chill-out area of the HQ, filled with props (from an amateur chef&#39;s station to a fixie bike) to show off its usefulness. The first thing Wicks wants us to focus on is the fit and feel, the quality of the locally sourced Horween leather for the bands, the smell and the texture. The message? Less stats, more craft.&nbsp;</p> <p>Isaacs nipped over to the famous watch show Baselworld in Switzerland to see what makes traditional watchmakers tick. The precision and attention to detail on these luxury objects left their mark.</p> <p>Everything on the 360 was rapid prototyped and refined, then rapid prototyped and refined again&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;down to the power button on the side which, like the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iwatch/review">Apple Watch</a>, mimics regular analogue watch design. The black and grey leather bands weren&#39;t selected from the Horween tannery&#39;s existing palette. Instead the team worked with the leather craftsmen, using the Pantone system as a reference, to match the colour target of the stainless steel bodies ending up with &quot;a whole host of greys and a range of subtleties in the blacks.&quot;</p> <p>No wonder it was a bit late.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Round screen, round body " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5098_0.JPG?1410486801" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Strapless 360 bodies " alt="Moto 360 prototypes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-proto-9_0.jpg?1410486801" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The quality of the materials used on the Moto 360 is lovely compared to, say, rubber bands but while the Moto 360 is the first watch to really get compared to analogue designs, it&#39;s still &#39;only&#39; &pound;200 (S$410). We know that the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review">Apple Watch</a> <em>starts</em> at US$350 (S$443) but Apple&#39;s keeping schtum on how much the 18-karat gold Watch Edition will cost. Will we see a &pound;13,000 (S$26,695) Moto 360? Or a cheaper watch?&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; This is day zero for us,&quot; says Isaacs. &quot; If there&#39;s people crying out for more variety through the price tiers, we&#39;ll go for it. We feel confident we&#39;ve started in the right place. If you start lower, it&#39;s harder to go up strategically.&quot;</p> <p>It&#39;s also worth noting that this is no <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/pebble/pebble-steel/review">Pebble</a> in terms of its customisability. Alternative watchbands can be used with the 360 but it&#39;s not exactly being encouraged. It&#39;s a spring pin, a watch industry mechanism, so swapping between Motorola straps is easy enough. Straps will be sold separately in the US for US$29 (S$37) for leather and US$99 (S$125) for light and dark stainless steel - no SG prices for now.&nbsp;</p> <p>But Motorola won&#39;t guarantee performance, particularly with other metal straps. Its own straps have a plastic space to isolate the band and optimise the 360&#39;s antennas.&nbsp;</p> <p>The body comes in light grey or black steel and two leather band colours, black and grey, are available at launch. The first two stainless steel straps are coming soon and more colours and materials are promised. For now, Motorola doesn&#39;t want to overwhelm us and is instead sticking to this &quot;classical&quot; and &quot;timeless&quot; range. Especially if all of them were announced by next weekend. Please. The online publishing industry needs the hits from Apple news articles.</p> <p>Simultaneously, analysts are also anxious that the Apple Watch doesn&rsquo;t actually represent any real innovation from Apple, because smartwatches already existed elsewhere in the world of technology, unlike computers, music players, smartphones and tablets before, respectively, the arrival of the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad.</p> <p>As it stands, it&rsquo;s going to be a tough time for Apple over the coming months, which will have to eke out survival from quarterly profits barely approaching US$8 billion, and with products that only manage to achieve satisfaction ratings in the region of 98 per cent.</p> <p>&ldquo; If only Apple would follow in the footsteps of Samsung, releasing at least three new devices before breakfast, and adding features no-one really asked for, just to check more boxes no-one really cares about, then it would show that it&rsquo;s a true innovator again,&rdquo; argued an entirely interchangeable analyst looking for some kind of validation by having their hollow words echo round the internet like so much generic prattle.</p> <p>Instead, there are now calls for John Rubinstein to take the reigns at Apple, despite being a TV and Broadway actor, because someone mis-spelled the name of ex-Apple and ex-Palm, Inc. executive chairman Jon Rubinstein on an online petition that&rsquo;s gone viral on Twitter, and none of the tech blogs noticed the mistake. Analysts have already leapt on this to say they believe the character of Linwood Murrow that Rubinstein played in popular cult TV show <em>Angel</em> should be the template for a whole new era of amazing and magical Apple products.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-doomed-company-goes-days-without-launching-new-product-line/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-doomed-company-goes-days-without-launching-new-product-line/feature#comments Apple iPhone 6 iPhone 6 Plus Smartphones Smartwatches Watch Thu, 11 Sep 2014 11:43:53 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1447369 at http://www.stuff.tv Why the Apple Watch is more than just another smartwatch http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/why-apple-watch-more-just-another-smartwatch/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple’s wearable has already been dismissed by some months before its release, but tech fans are missing the point </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="604" height="340" title="Apple Watch" alt="Why the Apple Watch is more than just another smartwatch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/apple-watch-1.jpg?1410402232" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>&ldquo; It&rsquo;s just a smartwatch.&rdquo; &ldquo; It&rsquo;s just a <em>watch</em>.&rdquo; &ldquo;Android got there first.&rdquo; &ldquo; It doesn&rsquo;t do anything new.&rdquo;</p> <p>As tech fans and pundits alike clamour to make direct comparisons between the Apple Watch and various smartwatches already on the market, they miss the point.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Back in time </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Manufacturers scream first and foremost about specs, Android owners grin about open ecosystems, and industrial design (with some exceptions) veers towards the manly and chunky. And it certainly has characteristics the iPod was roundly criticised for: it&rsquo;s &lsquo;too expensive&rsquo;; it&rsquo;s part of Apple&rsquo;s &lsquo;closed&rsquo; system; it&rsquo;s as much about good looks as anything; it&rsquo;s about <em>fashion</em>, not technology.</p> <p>Of course, you&rsquo;d have been a fool at the time to really believe such nonsense about the iPod, and the same&rsquo;s true for the Apple Watch, which is packed full of cutting-edge technology, including its amazing display and cleverly designed chips. Ive added that the design was driven by a &ldquo;compulsion to take incredibly powerful technology and make it accessible, relevant and ultimately personal&rdquo;, where &ldquo;unparalleled technical innovation&rdquo; boasted a design that connected with the wearer.</p> <p>So rather than cramming an iPhone interface into a tiny space, Apple rethought the customer experience entirely. Recognising that the screen needed to be uncovered as much as possible, interaction controls have often been assigned to a digital crown - an analogue to a mechanism that&rsquo;s been part of watches for decades. Simplicity and elegance pervades, echoing the intuitive nature of the original iPod or the iPhone.</p> <p>This has then been joined by materials and design that will appeal to the fashion-conscious and watch geeks alike. For instance, you could slap on a rubber strap before a hike, then use the G Watch R&#39;s hiking watch face, which shows off elevation, steps taken and a compass. The G Watch R is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 innards, 512MB RAM and 4GB of onboard storage and appears to handle Android Wear with ease. That said, you&#39;ll have to wait for our full review unit for a final verdict.</p> <p>GPS is a notable absentee here - a shame, as its inclusion would&#39;ve meant you could track your runs without needing a smartphone. LG told us this was due to battery constraints, which we suppose is fair enough (we were told that the G Watch R won&#39;t last more than two days as it is), but again, we&#39;re keeping our fingers crossed for GPS functionality in future iterations.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/android-wear/review" target="_blank">Android Wear review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Handy info at a glance" alt="LG G Watch R hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9993_1.JPG?1410228478" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Message notifications" alt="LG G Watch R hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9982_0.JPG?1410228478" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G Watch R is easily one of the best looking Android smartwatches we&#39;ve seen, although overall we still prefer the minimalist design of the Moto 360.</p> <p>Still, we applaud LG for designing a watch first, smart device second, which is exactly the order in which things should be done, given how important build and appearance are for wearable devices.</p> <p>Its crisp, bright circular screen impressed us during the time we spent with it, and the customisation options offered by the different watch faces and straps give it reasonable flexibility. Wear one under a shirt and suit so that you can easily peep at the circular smartwatch as and when you need to. This is the way all the Motorola execs do it - we didn&#39;t even notice many of them had the 360 on at first glance.&nbsp;</p> <p>The second thing you can do is slyly turn your wrist around or pretend there&#39;s an itch on your arm so that you can bring the Moto into people&#39;s eyeline to get more attention.</p> <p>That&#39;s what we&#39;ve been doing.&nbsp;</p> <p>Because it looks awesome and we want to show it off. Even in a room full of other people who are wearing a Moto 360.</p> <p>It takes up about the same amount of space on your wrist as a regular analogue watch, or for that matter the square LG G Watch (which looks even more uninspired in design now we&#39;ve sat it next to the Moto atop our wrist). It is chunky though at 11.3mm high so it does sort of declare its presence even if you don&#39;t want it too. At least, then, it&#39;s light. The 360 with a black leather strap, the unit we&#39;ve been given to review, weighs just 49g. That&#39;s heavy enough so you know it&#39;s there but light enough to avoid feeling like you have a tiny computer strapped to your arm.&nbsp;</p> <p>The steel body feels sturdy with a perfectly smooth circular edge and a single power button on the right hand side. We tried winding it - nothing happened but still, it&#39;s a nice borrowing from watch design school. If you select the watchface with a ticking hand and two timezone dials then squint, it could be an IWC. &nbsp;</p> <p>Some people will moan about the strip that cuts off the bottom of the circular screen. But Moto showed us the alternative in its Model Shop. A fully round screen, with no room for the display drivers, would have meant much bigger bezels. In fact, the prototype Motorola threw out looks a little like LG&#39;s G Watch R. We think Moto made the right choice.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/lg/lg-g-watch/review" target="_blank">LG G Watch review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="It&#039;s hip to be round " alt="Moto 360 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG2378_0.jpg?1411011466" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The clasp of the stainless steel strap " alt="Moto 360 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG2362_0.jpg?1411011466" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="The strip at the bottom means small bezels all round " alt="Moto 360 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG2321_0.jpg?1411011466" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Spot the watch " alt="Moto 360 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG2368_0.jpg?1411011466" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Glanceable, Pretty Sharp </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&#39;ve established the screen is round but is it any good?&nbsp;</p> <p>Easily glanceable, yes. At 1.56in it&#39;s nice and big and while colours don&#39;t pop off the display in a fit of vibrancy, they look appealing and fit in with the 360&#39;s understated looks. At 205ppi, the 360&#39;s resolution is about as sharp as smartwatches get. That means text looks fairly crisp but not if you get up close and really stare at it. There&#39;s also a little distortion around the very edge as the glass is slightly raised above the steel body but it&#39;s nothing that gets in the way.&nbsp;</p> <p>The display&#39;s not an OLED as the rumours suggested but a backlit LCD. One nice feature is auto brightness, something we haven&#39;t seen on the LG or Samsung and that&#39;s sure to help make the battery last. It will need to be cranked up for outdoors though as the top of the 360 gets quite reflecty. We&#39;ll test out how the Moto holds up in direct sunlight for the full review.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&#39;s Gorilla Glass 3 coating the screen to help protect it from scratches and bumps which, together with the IP67 waterproofing, should make for a surprisingly robust little smartwatch.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/pebble/pebble-steel/review" target="_blank">Pebble Steel review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Auto brightness is a neat feature " alt="Moto 360 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5103_0.JPG?1411011466" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why the round face? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Moto, as expected, has the best Android Wear watchfaces so far. From an animated ticking clock face with timezone dials to a stylish rotating set of circles, they really show off the form factor. There&#39;s only seven, yes seven, to get started with but we&#39;re hoping to be able to download many more in a matter of days. With Moto holding competitions for watchface designs, we don&#39;t think it will stick at seven for long. Like the Gear Live and G Watch, you can set the watchface to always on, or &#39;ambient&#39; here - the 360 warns that this decreases battery life but hey, a watch is for telling the time.&nbsp;</p> <p>Everything else about Android Wear - the menu list, pulling down to mute and see the battery, swipeable cards - is exactly as it was on the Wear watches we&#39;ve tested so far. Now cards have a bit more room to breathe, thanks to the round screen, but each one only requires a short flick to the right to get rid of.&nbsp;</p> <p>Motorola tells us that plenty of Android Wear apps are, or will be, optimised for the round display - notifications certainly are and we&#39;ve seen some examples, such as recipes from Allthecooks, making full use of the screen. With the Moto 360 going on sale this week in the US, developers won&#39;t waste any time tweaking Wear apps.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/android-wear/review" target="_blank">Android Wear review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Google Now would beat us at Scrabble - it&#039;s THAT smart " alt="Moto 360 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG2377_0.jpg?1411011466" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Yes, master " alt="Moto 360 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG2392_0.jpg?1411011466" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Slightly bumpy start </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>We already have a soft spot for the Moto but that doesn&#39;t mean we&#39;re blind to its little flaws.</p> <p>We&#39;ve had a couple of teething problems with the 360 already. Pairing to our Android phone went smoothly but soon after the Bluetooth connection decided to drop out. Now, every single smartwatch we&#39;ve tested has done this once or twice - even the ever reliable Pebble - so we can forgive this but we&#39;re keeping an eye on it all the time.&nbsp;</p> <p>We&#39;ve also noticed a teensy bit of lag with Google Now cards coming through. A few were stuttery as they popped up or were swiped away. And one card was blank until we tapped on it.&nbsp;</p> <p>We might not have paid much attention if it weren&#39;t for the fact that the G Watch and Gear Live we&#39;ve been wearing for the past month or so both performed better. After the initial flurry of helpful Chicago based updates though - local buses, baseball scores and the time at home in London - the 360 calmed down a little. Again, this might be a blip so we&#39;ll keep testing.</p> <p>The good news? The heart rate monitor works, though as with Samsung we&#39;d stick to sports accessories for medical readings. It looks pretty too - like someone kidnapped the iOS designers in charge of the clock and compass UI and forced them to create a heart rate app.</p> <p>The wrist flicking gesture to turn the screen on, or from &#39;ambient&#39; to on, works well enough too, almost every time, and voice search and commands are just as excellent as on other Android Wear watches. That&#39;s Google doing a great job and Moto&#39;s audio geeks working their magic helped by the two microphones on the 360. Of course, if you&#39;re trying to draw attention to yourself on the street - as we are when wearing the 360 - talking to your watch is still a pretty good way to do that.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung-gear-fit/review" target="_blank">Samsung Gear Fit review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Best Android Wear watchfaces so far - but only a few " alt="Moto 360 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG2414_0.jpg?1411011466" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="A cheeky heart rate monitor on the back " alt="Moto 360 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG2372_0.jpg?1411011466" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="What can we say, wearables get us all in a tizz" alt="Moto 360 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG2425_0.jpg?1411011466" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A battery that should last a day </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Moto says the 360 should last a day of mixed use and after our initial play, we&#39;d be inclined to agree. After eight hours (on auto brightness) of setting it up, testing voice, changing watchfaces every five minutes and taking our heart rate, the 360 still had 47% battery which isn&#39;t too shabby.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&#39;s a 320mAh unit, which sounds like it shouldn&#39;t take long to charge. But the Moto 360 charges wirelessly, via the bundled dock, so expect it to take longer than a microUSB cradle. When docked, the 360 displays the time in a night mode so chances are you&#39;ll stick the charger by your bed and charge once a night, during the week at least.</p> <p>It&#39;s an elegant solution, the charger is big enough that it probably won&#39;t get lost (unlike the Gear Live&#39;s cradle, for instance) and it means the designers didn&#39;t have to ruin the build with a microUSB port. There&#39;s no microUSB or magnetic charging cradle - the 360 charges via wireless charging with the dock coming as part of the bundle.&nbsp;</p> <p>That glorious round screen is a 1.56in backlit LCD and has a decent resolution of 320x290 with a pixel density of 205ppi, almost as sharp as the Samsung Gear Live. It&#39;s reasonably chunky at 11.5mm high with a diameter of 46mm - in other words, it takes up the same amount of wrist space as a regular watch.
