These come in three sizes &ndash; mini, medium and large &ndash; which have grids of 10, 18 and 27 square spaces on the back, arranged in groups of 1, 2 or 4.</p> <p>The front of an endo accepts a removable screen, while modules will be available to fill the slots on the back. So owners can fully customise their phone by adding in a 4G modem, for example, or a 5GHz WiFi module, or removing things that they don&#39;t use such as a fingerprint reader.</p> <p>More experimental phone owners might even look to add pico-projectors or remote controls, while the potential for adding in medical sensors for specialised use hasn&#39;t been overlooked either.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why modular? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A fortunate accident just before the first Ara Developers Conference made the benefits of an Ara handset clear.</p> <p>The night before the first functioning prototype was due to go on stage for its debut, someone dropped it and broke the screen. But, as Project Ara head Paul Eremenko joked during the presentation, once the phone is on the market, it&#39;ll be a simple matter to replace the screen by swapping out the front module for a new one.</p> <p>The same is obviously true for any other modules - if you&#39;re a big photography fan, and a new camera module is released, you&#39;ll be able to upgrade your phone without getting a whole new body; if you&#39;re a power user and want extra battery life, just add another one.</p> <p>The Ara team say that this means less waste, and since parts can be updated rather than thrown away the average lifespan of a phone will increase from two to five years. The downside, of course, is that modular components may end up costing more than a mass produced all-in-one (although Google is aiming to produce a basic handset for&nbsp;a very reasonable US$50) and may not be as robust.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/modular-smartphones-are-building-blocks-tech-shambles/feature">Opinion - modular phones are the building blocks of a tech shambles</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Broke your screen? The modules and endos will literally stick together using &#39;electropermanent&#39; magnets: powerful magnets that can be turned off and on.&nbsp;</p> <p>At this stage, the design calls for all components including the battery to be hot-swappable &ndash; ie removable without shutting the phone down. As a result, there&#39;s a backup battery inside the endo to keep the phone running no matter what.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/future-phones-it-s-all-about-context/feature">The future of phones? With lovely soft-touch plastic, real leather and FSC-certified wood rear panels to choose from, plus thousands of accent colour combinations, three iPhone options starts to look stingy.</p> <p>Whatever you choose, you get an impressively engineered sleek and solid build, white or black front panel, the Motorola logo dimple and a new aluminium frame that&#39;s lighter on the white model and a darker titanium on the black model. If you&rsquo;ve really converted to Moto this year, like us, that means you can pair your Moto X with a similarly hued Moto 360 smartwatch. You fashion darling, you.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong>&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/moto-360/motorola-moto-360/review">The Moto 360 is the end of bad smartwatch design&nbsp;</a></strong></p> <p>It&#39;s worth noting that the regular black resin model is a bit of a steal at US$500 (S$635) but other materials cost more. Both the real leather and wood versions start at US$525 (S$670). You won&#39;t regret it if you splash out, though we hear that the leather model needs a bit of TLC to keep it tidy.</p> <p>This is a big phone that doesn&#39;t feel big. From the front it looks a bit like an LG G3 - another smartphone that&#39;s serious about not wasting space. Neither are truly &quot;edge to edge&quot; but with bezels this skinny we&#39;re not complaining. The G3&#39;s screen is a touch bigger, at 5.5in, but the Moto X does come in both slightly smaller and slightly lighter at 145g. And as Moto points out, it&#39;s the same width as the Galaxy S5 with a bigger screen.</p> <p>As with the first Moto X it feels well made. It&#39;s also splash-resistant - not quite waterproof but better than nothing. Thanks to a shallow curve it sits nicely in the hand despite the fact that the 2014 edition is bigger in both dimensions.</p> <p>But this could be the first 4.7in plus phone that smaller hands find manageable. You can just about get a thumb across to the top corners. It&#39;s perfectly stable and balanced in the hand and the microUSB socket, nanoSIM slot and headphone jack are located top and bottom, leaving the tapered sides clutter-free. Only the power button and volume rocker grace the right-hand edge, with the power button textured to make it easier to identify with only your digits.</p> <p>So Motorola outclasses both Samsung and LG in the design department. And boy does it compete on components, too.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Moto X (2014) hands on review " alt="Moto X (2014) hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5078.JPG?1414032251" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Moto X (2014) hands on review " alt="Moto X (2014) hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5081.JPG?1414032251" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Moto X (2014) hands on review " alt="Moto X (2014) hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5039.JPG?1414032251" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Moto X (2014) hands on review " alt="Moto X (2014) hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5055.JPG?1414032245" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Awesome AMOLED </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There&#39;s simply no weak link in the Moto X&#39;s spec sheet. Unlike last year when the Moto X&#39;s admittedly lovely 720p display was outgunned by Full HD screen after Full HD screen, this year it matches many of the flagships on pixel count.</p> <p>OK, LG and Samsung have raced ahead with 2K screens on the G3 and Note 4. But many others including HTC and Sony have stuck with 1080p and these by no means feel like second class screens. The Moto X is 424ppi so text looks seriously smooth and pics look sharp. The LG offers more detail in hi-res photos and video but you&#39;ll only notice it with your face right up to the screens, eyeballs flitting from one to the other. In which case you may get odd glances on the train.</p> <p>This is an AMOLED display and you should know what that means. Colours are on the punchier side of the spectrum, without looking too alien; deep, deep blacks put the iPhone and LG to shame and viewing angles are great. The pixels look very close to the glass too - not quite iPhone-close but close.</p> <p>The downside of AMOLED colours is that from certain angles whites can look a bit yellow. If you spend a lot of time on emails and webpages this will start to grate, though we have heard promising whispers on the web of different units having slightly different colour temperatures.</p> <p>Our favourite bit about the screen, though? What it does when it&#39;s off. This phone is all about making Google&#39;s powerful services constantly available and useful. The scarily clever Google Now launcher can be accessed with a swipe to the right from the main homescreen, as with the Nexus. Motorola (unlike Samsung and Sony) keeps things simple by not doubling up on media services - there&rsquo;s just the Play Store, Play Music, Movies and Books. Nothing here is as pretty as the likes of HTC&rsquo;s Sense 6 but with the incoming Android L update, Google&rsquo;s new Material Design will spruce the aesthetics up.</p> <p>Apart from a few extremely useful, forward-thinking apps, which are helpfully bundled together in the Moto app, this is pretty much pure Android KitKat (until L arrives). You choose what to set up. There are a few tutorials that pop up on how to activate features but these are easily ignored.</p> <p>As we just hinted, our favourite of the bunch is the battery-saving Moto Display, which shows monochrome notifications on the lockscreen when your hand approaches it, triggering up to three app icons. Touching each app bubble shows a preview of notifications at a glance and swiping down unlocks the handset. Being an AMOLED screen the black pixels, which fill the majority of the screen, don&rsquo;t draw any power and it can&rsquo;t be activated in pockets or face down. &nbsp;Combined with the Moto X&rsquo;s subtle haptics, checking Moto Display makes for one of those addictive little habits much like Touch ID on the iPhone.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s more. Motorola uses its sensors much like Samsung does to turn the screen off when you&rsquo;re not looking at it - here it&rsquo;s called Attentive Display. Calls and alarms can be silenced and snoozed with a wave of a hand, too. That&rsquo;s nothing entirely new but it&rsquo;s worth confirming that both work perfectly.</p> <p>Motorola has its own unique tricks. Touchless voice controls return so that the X picks up your voice commands even when the screen is off and you&rsquo;re up to three feet away. A very cool tweak is that you can now change the command phrase from &lsquo;OK Google&rsquo; to anything you like - as long as it&rsquo;s a certain number of syllables. &lsquo; What&rsquo;s up doc?&rsquo; is too short, for instance, but &lsquo;Hey Samantha&rsquo; is fine.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong>&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-hint/ifa-2014/moto-hint-tiny-voice-controlled-earbud-future/news">Motorola&rsquo;s wireless earbud from the future, Moto Hint&nbsp;</a></strong></p> <p>The most impressive thing is how seamlessly it all works together. The motion sensors register your hand hovering over the phone every single time so that by the time you&rsquo;ve picked it up, Moto Display is onscreen. Voice works well with the different modes in Moto Assist, including home, sleep, meeting and driving - say &lsquo;Good night&rsquo; to the phone and it will switch to a &lsquo;do not disturb&rsquo; sleep mode. There&rsquo;s plenty of further customisation to explore but it never descends into chaos. Lots of phone makers claim their Android skin is simple but here&rsquo;s the thing, Motorola&rsquo;s actually is.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Moto app with everything to tweak and tinker with " alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxassist2_0.JPG?1414032245" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" title="It&#039;s simple really Tom " alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxmotodisplay_0.JPG?1414032245" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4000" height="3000" title="Google knows what you want to read and watch " alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxgooglenow_0.JPG?1414032245" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="4000" height="3000" title="Driving and home modes in Moto Assist " alt="Motorola Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorolamotoxassist_0.JPG?1414032245" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> All day battery will get better with L </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Now, we&#39;re not saying smartphone makers should stop trying to improve on Android. Even on powerhouses such as the LG G3 you get tiny bits of lag here and there - on the X Motorola has basically eradicated it.</p> <p>Jumping around from Chrome to open apps to messages it&#39;s even a split second faster than the near flawless iPhone 6. The only thing Apple&#39;s finest is quicker at than the Moto X is firing up the camera app and finding focus. More on that in a bit.</p> <p>Why is it such a joy to use? And how does Moto perform that much smoother with similar silicon? We reckon that&rsquo;s the combination of Motorola&#39;s very limited and considered tinkering with Android and the Snapdragon 801 chip that&#39;s powering nearly every flagship smartphone worth buying in 2014.</p> <p>It&#39;s not 100% &lsquo;Pure Android&rsquo; - Moto has added voice and contextual bits and bobs here and there, as detailed above. But it&#39;s as close as you&#39;ll get on a non-Nexus, also bear in mind that the new Nexus is huge, and in day-to-day use it shines. The benchmarks back up our findings with the Moto X scoring an S5 and One M8-beating 44698 on AnTuTu - only the Note 4 bests it. &nbsp;</p> <p>In short, there&rsquo;s a select few gadgets that everyone trusts to just do the job reliably every time - the iPhone, the iPad, the Pebble, the Moto G. More megapixels. Ring flash. 4K video. The second-gen Moto X pulls out all the stops with its new camera and is &hellip; almost, nearly, very close to matching the best superphones. So it&#39;s outsnapped by the best. But that doesn&#39;t mean the Moto X isn&#39;t capable of taking very, very good phone pics.</p> <p>There&#39;s a new 13MP sensor with an f/2.25 lens, which is a big improvement on the first Moto X&#39;s decent but not jaw dropping images. It takes clear, detailed shots in good light, has a handy quick-access HDR mode and reproduces colours accurately. That said, it can struggle with tricky exposures and miss focus from time to time. In these cases, it&#39;s best to choose the manual tap to focus option in the basic camera app rather than relying on autofocus. Then for the best results, just keep snapping either by tapping again or using the volume button. The very best smartphone cams are slightly quicker to autofocus, too. This is no S5 when it comes to rapid fire shooting and real enthusiasts will want more controls to play about with.</p> <p>Autofocus is much better when capturing 1080p video - with a maximum of 32GB storage, we wouldn&rsquo;t recommend shooting much 4K footage, although it is an option. Slow mo video, at 120fps, is just as easy to play around with - as on the iPhone 6 there&rsquo;s an idiot-proof slider to select the slowed down portion of your clip.</p> <p>At night and indoors, it&rsquo;s a mixed bag. The styled-up LED ring flash around the main camera is a new addition, designed to provide softer light than regular flashes. You&rsquo;re left with images that are less obviously taken with a flash than the equivalent samples from rivals such as the G3 and iPhone 6 - it&rsquo;s definitely kinder to your friends&#39; faces.</p> <p>Still, both of these phones do a better job in low light without flash. And that&rsquo;s much more useful. Images taken with the Moto are usable, if a little desaturated, but can look noisy and a bit smudgy at times, which is a bit of shame. A software update to tweak image quality, a la the Nexus 5 last year, would be very welcome here.</p> <p>For now, the Moto X detects faces and people/objects in motion (two tricky subjects) and automatically takes multiple shots before choosing which one it thinks is the best - in focus, no blinking etc. It doesn&rsquo;t result in perfect images every time but in one or two instances, it&rsquo;s proven its worth.</p> <p>Elsewhere, Moto joins HTC and Sony with its own auto video creation tool, Highlights Reel, which is a bit hidden away but allows you to change the clip length and use audio from the videos or a choice of music tracks. Around the front a 2MP camera takes 1080p video and can be commanded by voice to &#39;take a selfie&#39;, completing the set-up. And the wrist-twisting Quick Capture feature returns from last year. It works well, when you give it a second, and helps to keep your eyes on the scene.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong>&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8) - with Video Highlights - tested&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" alt="Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5063_1.JPG?1414032245" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5072_1.JPG?1414032245" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="Moto X (2014) review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5092_1.JPG?1414032245" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> How to make the Moto X even better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If we had one plea to Motorola it would be this: bring out a 64GB model for the Android fanboy and fangirl power users. Great news for thrifty gadget fans.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://oneplus.net/blog/2014/10/get-ready-for-pre-orders/" target="_blank">OnePlus</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/one/oneplus-one-pre-orders-open-27th-october/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/one/oneplus-one-pre-orders-open-27th-october/news#comments One OnePlus Smartphones Mon, 20 Oct 2014 15:40:20 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1450938 at http://www.stuff.tv The Motorola Droid Turbo could be the Droid you’re looking for http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/motorola-droid-turbo-may-be-droid-you-re-after/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It’s tough as old boots and packs a 21MP rear snapper – what more can you ask for? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="567" height="425" title="The Motorola Droid Turbo could be the Droid you’re looking for" alt="The Motorola Droid Turbo could be the Droid you’re looking for" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/mtotd.jpg?1413844789" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>It&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/motorola-s-new-droid-trio-hint-moto-x-features/news">been a while since Motorola pulled out a Droid</a> from its magic hat of smartphones - but a press invite has confirmed the existence of the Motorola Droid Turbo.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/hafizahosman" title="View user profile.">Hafizah Osman</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Pleasing to the eye and touch </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Droid Turbo is expected to come with Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box when it launches and will be available in a choice of black or red hues, with different textures to distinguish them apart.&nbsp;</p> <p>Verizon has been <a href="http://www.gsmarena.com/droid_turbo_gets_leaked_press_pics_official_unveiling_date-news-9925.php" target="_blank">sending out press invites </a>for a Droid-branded handset reveal on 28 October, so it is almost set in stone that the device will be unveiled in the coming days - but whether the handset makes it to anywhere else in the world is still in question.</p> <p>Stay tuned &ndash; your content and what you were interacting with was given less prominence than the means of interacting with it.</p> <p>The iPhone upended that approach, in effect making these things one and the same, but Apple&rsquo;s steadfast determination to keep its product line brutally streamlined meant it was Android that explored and investigated new form-factors and display sizes.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why the Nexus 9 ditching widescreen is right </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There are two lines of thinking when it comes to tablet displays. Apple has offered a 4:3 aspect ratio on every iPad to date, which even on the original model&rsquo;s release was at odds with the then-iPhone&rsquo;s 3:2 display. By contrast, most Android tablets have aped smartphones, which have tended towards 9:16 &mdash; a TV-like 16:9 aspect ratio in landscape.</p> <p>For a smartphone, such displays make sense. Primarily designed to be used in portrait, you want a display that shows plenty of content, and where everything&rsquo;s relatively easily accessible with a thumb or two. Tablets, however, have very different use cases, which are often closer in nature to what you&rsquo;d do with a notebook.</p> <p>In landscape, widescreen tablets are perfectly suited to video playback, but their shortcomings become clearer elsewhere. If you&rsquo;re using an on-screen keyboard, the area remaining for content is reduced to a sliver; when using the device in portrait, it doesn&rsquo;t suit books and comics, or creating documents intended for paper output. Even browsing websites on a 16:9 tablet can feel sub-optimal, content not having room to breathe in portrait, but needing regular scrolling in landscape.</p> <p>In 4:3/3:4, these problems disappear. The result is more room to work, and a more natural set-up for creating and consuming most content. There are compromises &mdash; black bars above and below widescreen video, and games having a squarer viewport; but even the latter can be beneficial in strategy titles or shooters where enemies are coming at you from all angles.</p> <p>Microsoft headed somewhat in this direction with the Surface Pro 3&rsquo;s 3:2 display; but Google&#39;s Nexus 9 gets you 4:3 with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 &mdash; identical to the iPad, and at a higher resolution than on the iPad Air, due to the Nexus 9&rsquo;s smaller physical dimensions.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/yYHY3MFiq1o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nexus 9" alt="Nexus 9" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-9-lifestyle_0.jpg?1413697329" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why the Nexus 6’s giant display is just too much </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/7-things-you-need-know-about-google-nexus-6/news">As per our write-up</a>, the Nexus 6 is essentially an embiggened Moto X, with a display that&rsquo;s a tiny smidge off of six inches. Its pixel count is almost absurdly high; the phone&#39;s 2560 x 1440 resolution means that there are more pixels packed into this smartphone than the Nexus 9 tablet. It all feels a bit excessive &mdash; another example of smartphones trying to one-up each-other on size; if this keeps up, at some point a manufacturer will realise with a shock that their new device doesn&rsquo;t actually fit through the door of the average family home.</p> <p>The argument in favour of larger displays is clear: you potentially get to see more content on the screen, or the same content but bigger. Such devices can in certain cases be more pleasurable to use, and if you&rsquo;re the kind of person who reckons you can use a smartphone as your sole computer, you&rsquo;re going to want a display larger than the tiny viewport on the likes of an iPhone 5s.</p> <p>The problem is <em>everything else</em>. In order to keep the visual fidelity high, Google&rsquo;s had to make the screen 2K. This heavily impacts on all kinds of things: it drains the battery more quickly; it makes the device pricier than it otherwise had to be; and it also potentially leads to upsampling issues when viewing 1080p content (although probably not quite to the same level as the iPhone 6 Plus under some circumstances, which may merrily upsample content to 2208 x 1242 before downsampling it again for the 1080p display&mdash;bonkers).</p> <p>Coupled with this, you end up with a flagship phone that&rsquo;s simply too big and unwieldy for many &mdash; a modern incarnation of a Dom Joly prop, but on which you can play Angry Birds. We don&rsquo;t know yet if it&rsquo;ll be prone to bendgate, but whereas Google appears to have primarily thought about the user experience with the Nexus 9, the Nexus 6 seems to merely be yet another case of &lsquo;mine&rsquo;s bigger than yours&rsquo;.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/google-nexus-6/review" target="_blank">Google Nexus 6 preview &ndash; everything you need to know</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wk-PY2dBKaA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="782" height="586" title="Nexus 6" alt="Nexus 6" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-6-charging_2.jpg?1413697329" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/how-google-got-one-screen-right-and-one-screen-wrong-nexus-9-and-nexus-6/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/how-google-got-one-screen-right-and-one-screen-wrong-nexus-9-and-nexus-6/feature#comments Google iPad Nexus 6 Nexus 9 Smartphones Tablets Fri, 17 Oct 2014 12:07:04 +0000 Elissa Loi 1450767 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung Galaxy S6 http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s6/samsung-galaxy-s6-what-we-d-see-samsung-s-next-flagship <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> How can Samsung make the best smartphone in the world? While the latter would be a bold, memorable move, it&rsquo;d probably push the S6&rsquo;s manufacturing costs a little too high, and to be honest at this point we&rsquo;d be happy with metal rather than another year of uninspiring plastic.</p> <p>We&rsquo;d also expect to see some measure of dust- and waterproofing. The S5 is sealed against the elements, and its successor is sure to follow. It might even kick things up a notch so you can take it even deeper &lsquo;neath the waves: bumping the spec to IP68 from the S5&rsquo;s IP67 rating would mean you could completely immerse the phone for a prolonged period of time without water getting inside. We think the chances of a 2K screen making its way into the S6 are very high indeed, and it&rsquo;ll probably get a slight size bump too (but maybe not too much, given that Samsung already has the Note 4 for people who want a huge screen).</p> <p>We&rsquo;d personally be more than happy with 2K and 5.2in &ndash; going any bigger risks making the phone too big for the hands of normal folks and going sharper strikes us as pixel overkill on a screen this size, especially as more pixels require more power and put more strain on the battery.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Will Samsung match LG with a 2K screen? Both are quad-core, 64-bit and more powerful on paper than any smartphone processor at the time of writing, and we&rsquo;d be pretty happy to see either of them on the S6 (they seem likely to require more power than the S5&rsquo;s Snapdragon 801, however, which could put extra strain on the battery life &ndash; see below for more on that), especially if they were paired with at least 3GB of RAM.</p> <p>Samsung has form in launching its flagship phones with octo-core Exynos chipsets too, albeit not in the UK. While eight cores might sound twice as powerful as four, in reality it doesn&rsquo;t quite work like that: in benchmarks, the Exynos-equipped S5 only performs marginally better than the Snapdragon 801-equipped S5. We think Samsung can stick to a quad-core Snapdragon 808 or 810 and still offer the performance a phone like the S6 will require.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll talk about storage here too. If it goes down the removeable backplate design route, Samsung is likely to support expandable storage via microSD, and thus the built-in storage doesn&rsquo;t need to be huge &ndash; let&rsquo;s say 32GB. If, however, the phone is has a metal unibody design and memory isn&rsquo;t user-increasable, we&rsquo;d like to see 64GB and maybe even 128GB as an option, just to keep pace with the Apple iPhone 6. And Samsung does like to be seen to be trying to keep up with Apple.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We&#039;d love to see a powerhouse CPU like the Snapdragon 808 or 810" alt="We&#039;d love to see a powerhouse CPU like the Snapdragon 808 or 810" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qualcomm-snapdragon_0.jpg?1413612122" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery: Bigger and better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy S5 has a 2800mAh battery that matches up to the majority of its Android rivals by lasting around a day in normal use conditions (but not all: the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3</a> lasts at least half a day longer), and it holds an advantage over most too in that it&rsquo;s user replaceable. If Samsung decides to go with a seamless metal body that could change, and if it does we&rsquo;d like to see better battery life, either owing to a larger battery capacity or increased efficiency.</p> <p>The LG G3 has a 5.5in 2K screen and markedly longer battery life than the 5.1in, 1080p Galaxy S5, so it&rsquo;s certainly possible for Samsung to improve its power efficiency. Much of this will depend on the processor it chooses for the S6, and if that&rsquo;s the Snapdragon 808 or 810, neither seems likely to offer lower energy use than the S5&rsquo;s Snapdragon 805. So it could well be that a larger battery is required.</p> <p>Of course, Samsung may want to retain its user replaceable battery selling point, in which case it&rsquo;ll probably hint that those looking for more battery life could simply buy a second battery to carry around with them.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="The S5&#039;s battery is OK, but there&#039;s room for improvement" alt="The S5&#039;s battery is OK, but there&#039;s room for improvement" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-s5-battery_1.jpg?1413612122" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: Better in low light, please </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Were we betting types, we&rsquo;d put a significant wedge on the S6&rsquo;s camera outstripping the S5&rsquo;s when it comes to megapixel count. The S5 has a 16MP sensor, and we&rsquo;d be surprised if the S6 doesn&rsquo;t take things above 20MP.</p> <p>But megapixels alone don&rsquo;t make a good photo, and we&rsquo;d much rather see some measures taken to boost performance in low light conditions: larger megapixels (Apple&rsquo;s favoured method), optical image stabilisation, a wider aperture, or a combination of those. Optical image stabilisation is a distinct possibility, we&rsquo;d say, as Samsung has already used it in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Galaxy Note 4</a>.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re not personally much inclined to take selfies, but we hear a lot of &ldquo;the young people&rdquo; are, and Samsung may well attempt to entice them to the S6 with a higher resolution front-facing camera. The HTC Desire Eye manages to squeeze a 13MP snapper on its front side, and while we wouldn&rsquo;t expect (or want) Samsung to go to those lengths, we wouldn&rsquo;t be surprised to see something in the 7 or 8MP range.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Samsung Galaxy Note 4 hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The S5&#039;s camera could perform better in low light conditions" alt="The S5&#039;s camera could perform better in low light conditions" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-s5-camera_0.jpg?1413612122" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Release date: No hanging about </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>With Mobile World Congress 2015 running from 2nd-5th March, we&rsquo;d expect Samsung to make its big Galaxy S6 reveal around that time (March/April is the period when Samsung traditionally unveils its flagship Galaxy S devices).
