But as always, these things are relative.</p> <p>Measuring 5.5 inches, it&rsquo;s not huge as far as rival phone/tablet hybrids are concerned. The forthcoming&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Samsung Galaxy Note 4</a>&nbsp;will be 5.7 inches, the Nokia Lumia 1520 is a 6-incher and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is a 6.4in beast. Even so, any iPhone user will gasp at the enormity of it all.</p> <p>Plus, while the display isn&#39;t the absolute biggest, the body itself is ginormous, even next to the iPhone 6 that looks sizeable next to an iPhone 4s. And it&rsquo;s significantly bigger than the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>; while the latter has the same size display, LG&#39;s almost bezel-less design keeps the handset itself looking pretty trim.</p> <p>The LG&rsquo;s screen is significantly higher-resolution, too, with 534 pixels per inch where Apple has included a 1920 x 1080 screen with 401 ppi. But for everyday use, the Apple screen is a cracker, with richer but quieter colours when compared to the G3 and real, naturalistic tones.</p> <p>Playing back high-definition video from YouTube did give LG&rsquo;s screen the edge, as it upscaled content to fill its own sumptuous display, but Apple&rsquo;s Retina display HD performs a remarkable trick (here and on the smaller iPhone 6) of making the display seem right up next to you, so you can almost feel the high-def under your fingerprint.&nbsp; This is easily the best screen on any iPhone and compares well to the competition. It&#39;s subtle, beautiful and pin-sharp.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-6-vs-samsung-galaxy-s5-weigh/news">iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S5 - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/A4zs3D_EEYA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Scaling it up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Many features of the iPhone 6 are simply replicated on the 6 Plus and thanks to an efficient scaler in each of the phones, everything looks pretty much identical on the two, if a little higher-res on the 6 Plus.</p> <p>But the bigger phone does have a few additional features. Chief among them is the new landscape mode: turn the phone to landscape orientation and the home screen will turn too. It&#39;s a transition iPad users will be used to, but is new to Apple&rsquo;s phones with this model. The expectation, presumably, is that like other phone/tablet hybrids, this will be used more in landscape viewing than a regular phone would.</p> <p>So with this in mind some apps have already been optimised to provide a distinct landscape version that doesn&rsquo;t simply enlarge the portrait mode. Messages and Mail both look more like their iPad versions, with horizontal views that show not just a list of message summaries but the list on the left and one email in full on the right. Expect other app makers to come up with their own ways to make the most of all the extra real estate on the 6 Plus.&nbsp;</p> <p>Like its smaller sibling, the iPhone 6 Plus also has a fingerprint sensor with which to unlock the screen. This feature is smoothly efficient and will grow more useful when it works in conjunction with the NFC chip to turn the phone into a contactless payment system.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/icheapskate-25-best-free-apps-iphone-and-ipad/feature">iCheapskate - 38 amazing free apps for iPhone and iPad</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/scale_0.png?1410937566" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Design </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course, there&rsquo;s more to the phone than the screen. The measurements of the handset are bigger than those of the LG G3 in height and width, but the Apple phone is thinner from front to back at 7.1mm, itself thinner than last year&rsquo;s iPhone 5s. This is important as it&rsquo;s the dimension that you feel the most when holding it one-handed.</p> <p>The curved front and back edges of the iPhone 6 are repeated here and again contribute to the phone being much more manageable than the bald statistics would suggest.</p> <p>Many hands will still find the 6 Plus too gigantic, but if you&rsquo;re in any doubt, try it &ndash; it&rsquo;s not quite what you expect. Otherwise, the design of the iPhone 6 Plus is identical to the iPhone 6. And different is what we got.</p> <p>Obviously the increased screen size is the main change, but it&#39;s far from the only visual difference. Like the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8)</a>, the iPhone 6 has all-metal back with curved edges front and back rather than the flat, 90-degree edges on the 5s. The result is a phone that&rsquo;s super-smooth in the hand with the joins between glossy screen and matte back almost unnoticable as you hold it.</p> <p>And you&rsquo;ll want to hold it &ndash; it feels amazing.</p> <p>The curves make it superbly comfortable in use despite its increased size, while its thin profile also helps; it&rsquo;s just 6.9mm thick, so substantially skinnier than the 7.5mm 5s.&nbsp;</p> <p>On the downside, the camera lens does now protrude from the phone&rsquo;s case, which may not please everyone, while&nbsp;the distinctive light-coloured lines on the back at top and bottom won&#39;t be to all tastes either. The latter, at least, are present for practical as well as aesthetic reasons: with a metal-backed phone it&rsquo;s hard to scoot the signal in and out, and the flush rubberised lines sort this. Certainly call quality on the iPhone 6 is strong and reliable.&nbsp;</p> <p>Overall, it&#39;s a beautifully built bit of kit. Where the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>&nbsp;have to make do with plastic shells - albeit metal-style plastic in the case of the latter - the iPhone 6 feels wholly premium. Only the M8 really runs it close, and that&#39;s a far bigger handset. Every iPhone since the 4 has been a thing of beauty, and the 6 is no exception.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-6-vs-htc-one-m8-weigh/feature">iPhone 6 vs HTC One (M8) - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-1_0.jpg?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-2_1.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-3_1.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-4_1.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A screen dream? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 6&#39;s headline feature is its 4.7in display. And with good reason: Apple had only ever upped its screen size once before, and that from 3.5in to 4in. But let&#39;s not get carried away here - by anyone else&#39;s standards, 4.7in is not a huge screen. The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact - note the word &#39;Compact&#39; - is only a smidgeon smaller at 4.6in. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3 and Sony Xperia Z3, the iPhone remains a pixie in a land of Android ogres.</p> <p>For many people, 4.7in will be the ideal size: big enough to offer a better viewing and gaming experience, without being so big that you can&#39;t use it properly. Of course none of that matters if the quality isn&#39;t there too.</p> <p>Fortunately, it is.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPhone 6 is no match in screen resolution terms when compared to the G3 (534 pixels per inch) and Galaxy S5 (432ppi). Apple&rsquo;s screen has just 326ppi, the same as the iPhone 5s. But stats aren&rsquo;t the whole story and one glance at the iPhone 6 confirms this.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy S5 has arguably the best screen on the market: rich, vibrant and unbelievably detailed, although the LG G3 runs it very close thanks to the extra pixels on its 2K display. And the iPhone 6 deserves to sit in that exalted company.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s lower-resolution than its rivals, but more than dense enough to look glorious. It also lacks the occasionally over-saturated look of the S5; the Samsung display, though unequivocally beautiful, can still tend to the garish. As far as the LG goes, those extra pixels only really make themselves known when you&rsquo;re reading the tiniest of writing.&nbsp;</p> <p>However we&#39;d be lying if we said that we hadn&#39;t hoped for more. The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">6 Plus</a>&nbsp;has a full HD 1080p screen, as does almost every one of the iPhone 6&#39;s main rivals. While the 6&#39;s display is easily one of the best 720p efforts we&#39;ve used, the differences between it and a full HD screen are visible if you look for them.</p> <p>However, for day-to-day use, there&rsquo;s a limit to what you can see - or at least to what matters. And in those terms, the iPhone 6 is as good as its keenest rivals. Plus, it&rsquo;s just right there: the display seems so pressed up against the glass it&rsquo;s like you&rsquo;re making direct contact with the pixels.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/why-i-m-dreading-bigger-iphone-6/feature">Why I&#39;m dreading the bigger iPhone 6</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-screen-1_0.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera tweaks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As the millions of sepia-toned hipster-food-photos posted hourly to Instagram prove, the camera is one of the most important things on any phone.&nbsp; So you might have expected Apple to want to match the 16MP sensor of the Galaxy S5 or the 20.7MP on Sony&rsquo;s Xperia&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/sony-xperia-z2-sirius/review">Z2</a>&nbsp;and Z3. But no, it&rsquo;s stuck with eight megapixels. Eight.</p> <p>Fortunately for Apple, the combination of a good lens, advanced image processing and sublimely simple camera controls in previous iPhones has served it very well. Plus, there&#39;s more to a good camera than lots of pixels - after all, the HTC One (M8) takes great shots with a mere 4MP sensor.</p> <p>Part of the M8&#39;s success is that although it uses fewer pixels, they&#39;re individually bigger than those on most rivals at around 2 microns.&nbsp; The iPhone can&rsquo;t match that, but at 1.5 microns, the Apple pixels are bigger than those on the Samsung Galaxy S5 (1.12 microns).</p> <p>Anyway, that&#39;s the specs out of the way, let&#39;s get back to the real world...</p> <p>Innovations this time around include Focus Pixels. These are called phase detection pixels by other manufacturers and a couple of rival handsets share this feature, notably the Galaxy S5. Phase detection is faster than the more commonly used contrast detection and means nippier autofocus - which in turn should mean snappier snaps with greater sharpness.&nbsp;Last year&rsquo;s iPhone 5s took pictures with no discernible delay anyway, but the iPhone 6 sure is fast. Quality-wise, there&#39;s not a huge amount of difference from the 5s - which means it&#39;s still one of the best out there.</p> <p>Where Apple&rsquo;s camera is consistently better than rivals is in its superbly simple ease of use. No white balance to adjust, no extra granular controls to fiddle with. Now, though, you can deliberately over- or under-expose shots. But don&#39;t fret that this&#39;ll be an unwelcome distraction from the point-and- shoot ethos. In fact, it&rsquo;s wholly intuitive: press on the screen until the yellow exposure box appears. Next to it is a little sun icon with a line through it. As you draw your finger up and down it shows you how dark or light the final pic will be. Easy as pie.</p> <p>Video recording is also improved,&nbsp;with HD filming at 60 frames per second and enhanced slo-mo (now double the frame rate of 240 per second). But there&rsquo;s no 4K video as found on some rivals. Apple&rsquo;s skill has rarely been to be first, so we&#39;re not exactly surprised as its absence. Still, it would have been a nice thing to have. Quality-wise, footage is smooth and looks striking.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-6-vs-samsung-galaxy-s5-weigh/news">iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S5 - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-camera-1_0.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-camera-2_0.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iPhone 6 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen:</strong>&nbsp;4.7in 720x1334 IPS LCD (326ppi)</p> <p><strong>Processor:</strong>&nbsp;1.4GHz Apple A8 processor</p> <p><strong>RAM:</strong>&nbsp;(unspecified)</p> <p><strong>OS:</strong>&nbsp;iOS 8</p> <p><strong>Storage:</strong>&nbsp;16/64/128GB</p> <p><strong>Battery:</strong>&nbsp;(unspecified)</p> <p><strong>Camera:</strong>&nbsp;8MP 1080p@60fps, 720p@240fps rear, 1.2MP 720p front</p> <p><strong>Connectivity:</strong>&nbsp;Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC (Apple Pay only), 3G/4G</p> <p><strong>Dimensions:</strong>&nbsp;138x67x6.9mm</p> <p><strong>Weight:</strong>&nbsp;129g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> More power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Performance is always a tricky thing to judge on iPhones. Look at the stats alone and most high-end Androids leave it in the dust. But use one, and it&#39;ll often feel like the fastest thing since Usain Bolt&#39;s sliced bread. The iPhone 6 is no different.</p> <p>The new iPhone has an improved processor, namely the A8, and whizzes through tasks without the slightest of pauses.&nbsp; The previous A7 was shockingly fast thanks in part to the new 64-bit architecture that arrived on that chip, and that&#39;s obviously retained here. And while the new model doesn&rsquo;t&nbsp;<em>feel</em>&nbsp;any faster, it has more pixels to move around and is&nbsp;probably doing more in the background to boot.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a new motion co-processor, the M8, not to be confused with HTC&rsquo;s flagship. The co-processor now measures altitude thanks to a built-in barometer, so it can monitor when you are climbing or descending stairs. Health apps will make much of this and Apple&rsquo;s own Health app has a dashboard to record your steps, cycling and more, made possible by the new hardware.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/icheapskate-25-amazing-free-games-ipad-and-iphone/feature">iCheapskate - 38 amazing free games for iPhone and iPad</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-extra_0.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A bigger Battery </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Fact: most smartphones have terrible battery life. Just try leaving home in the morning without having charged up overnight. And the more you use your phone, the more quickly the battery drains.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&#39;s a recipe for disaster, and one from which previous iPhones have hardly been immune. The iPhone 5s lasted a Standard Smartphone Day (SSD) - by which we mean you could just about get away with only having to charging it nightly, so long as you didn&#39;t really hammer it during the day. Otherwise, you&#39;ll have wanted that spare charger at work.</p> <p>Happily, the iPhone 6 just goes on and on.&nbsp; In regular use, the phone performed for a full day and well into a second &ndash; a leap forward compared to the iPhone 5s. Additionally, iOS 8 gives you handy warnings about apps which are constantly making data connections, so you can turn the beggars off.</p> <p>We&#39;ll be doing a full battery run-down test soon, at which point we&#39;ll compare it to flagship Androids such as the LG G3, but for now we&#39;ll just say that it lasts longer than any other iPhone.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;</strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/stuff-s-survival-guide-beating-crowds-get-iphone-6/feature">How to get Apple&#39;s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus easily in Singapore</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/F771ctzYYL4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Features </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The new hardware is faster and more powerful, some of it to service the bigger screen and updated iOS 8 operating software. Eventually, it will lead to more sparkly games, faster and more powerful apps. Already, Apple has added its own Health app, of which more below.</p> <p>Sadly, some of the newest, spangliest of features on the iPhone can&rsquo;t be reviewed yet. One of the most striking is Apple Pay, which uses a combo of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and a newly arrived NFC chip in the phone to turn the handset into a contactless credit card. Demonstrations we saw last week in Cupertino were certainly seamless and speedy, so assuming Apple is able to do the deals with banks and credit card companies that it&rsquo;s done in the States, this could be a very big deal.</p> <p>Of course, Android phones have had similar features for some time. But NFC hasn&rsquo;t really taken off yet. Apple Pay could change this.</p> <p>Other phones have fingerprint sensors, too, but the Apple model is superb not least because it&rsquo;s effort-free. By resting your thumb or finger on the home button as you would to wake the phone, the Touch ID feature is invoked. The Samsung Galaxy S5 by contrast requires a swiping movement to make it work - definitely a little less intuitive.</p> <p>Similarly, there&#39;s VoLTE - that&rsquo;s Voice over LTE - which promises to deliver voice calls through 4G data; handy if your 2G signal is weak at home, say. It needs both handsets to be on VoLTE and for networks to play ball. The feature is partly made possible by a faster LTE chip which can deliver up to 150Mbps downloads, when the networks can match this.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/what-apple-watch-can-tell-us-about-iphone-7-and-ipad-air-3/feature">What Apple Watch can tell us about iPhone 7 and iPad Air 3</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-features-1.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple Pay and VoLTE in Singapore </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Are we expecting Apple Pay in Singapore anytime soon? Highly unlikely. NFC payment isn&#39;t new in this part of the world, but the steps involved to ensure a secure payment system through your smartphone is somewhat of a headache. The existing system require a special SIM card certified by the telcos, manufacturers and banks. Imagine the hassle you&#39;ll need to go through for a supposedly simpler solution.</p> <p>VoLTE, however, is definitely something you&#39;ll enjoy. As of now, both SingTel and StarHub have confirmed that their networks support VoLTE. Besides higher quality calls, this also means you can surf on 4G speeds while you&#39;re on a call. A far cry from a few months back, when you&#39;re dropped back to a 3G network during calls, and the phone has to search for a 4G network once the call&#39;s over.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/tein-hee-seow" title="View user profile.">Tein Hee Seow</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 8 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 6 arrives running Apple&#39;s new iOS 8, available from today on all iPhones from the 4s onwards in addition to various iPads and iPod touch models.</p> <p>It looks mostly like last year&rsquo;s radically restyled iOS 7, but if 7 was all about design changes, 8 is all about openness, customisation and communication.&nbsp;</p> <p>There are immediate benefits to apps such as Messages, which will now let you easily send voice files, photos and videos at the touch of a button in the text area. And below that you&#39;ll find the all-new predictive keyboard, which aims to guess which word you&rsquo;re about to type before you&rsquo;ve keyed in the first letter. This is splendid and works well. Third-party companies such as the excellent Swiftkey are also now able to produce their own keyboards for the iPhone &ndash; something Apple hadn&rsquo;t permitted until now.</p> <p>Bigger improvements still include Handoff, which enables you to start tapping an email out on your iPhone keyboard and then carry it on seamlessly on a Mac using the latest Yosemite software. This also means that when a phone call comes in you can answer it on your Mac or on another Apple device &ndash; handy if your phone is snuggling on the windowsill where the mobile phone signal is strongest while you&rsquo;re ensconced next to the TV in the other room. We weren&#39;t able to test these features, as Yosemite is still in beta release mode, but we&#39;ll update this review as soon as we&#39;re able.</p> <p>Most importantly of all, there&rsquo;s the new Health app, which allows other apps to contribute to the fitness monitoring that Health collates. This is another feature that&rsquo;s in its early stages and it&rsquo;s going to be interesting to see what happens if you have multiple fitness devices which report different step counts, for example. Apple stresses that each app only takes part if you give it permission.</p> <p>Still, the basic app looks pretty neat, with the restrained, classy styling you&rsquo;d expect, though Samsung&#39;s S Health app looks spiffy, too and both are outclassed by the LifeLog software on Sony&rsquo;s phones.</p> <p>And finally there&rsquo;s iCloud Drive, which brings Apple up to date with the document-sharing capabilities other platforms already boast. Just as with iCloud, which syncs your contacts, calendars and more across multiple devices, iCloud Drive saves documents across all of your Apple gadgets and on icloud.com.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/how-back-your-iphone-and-ipad-you-install-ios-8/feature">How to back up your iPhone and iPad before installing iOS 8</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-iOS-8-1_1.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="820" height="1150" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-iOS-8-3-portrait_0.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In order to really judge the iPhone 6 you first have to consider what it&#39;s not.</p> <p>It&#39;s not a mega-screened wannabe phablet. The best Androids still beat it on all these counts.</p> <p>But that&#39;s just specs. What it is, is the best iPhone ever.</p> <p>It&#39;s a real looker, with an amazingly slim and deeply attractive build. It feels lovely in the hand, despite the extra size. It has the best screen of any iPhone - big enough to be useful, with gorgeous colours. It&#39;s the most powerful iPhone ever, even if in use all you&#39;ll know is that it feels very fast. It has the best battery of any iPhone ever, lasting well into a second day. And it also packs some of Apple&#39;s biggest software innovations in years, although we&#39;ll have to wait for the likes of Apple Pay to make their way over here.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s, for all its qualities, didn&#39;t do enough to put Apple back on top. It just lagged too far behind its Android rivals in key areas.&nbsp;</p> <p>But the iPhone 6, with its combination of fresh new form factor, the upcoming links to desktop via Yosemite and the promise of Apple Pay, might just do the trick.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">Apple iPhone 6 Plus review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-verdict-1_1.png?1410920622" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>With its bigger screen and software overhaul, the iPhone 6 is the freshest feeling iPhone in years</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple iPhone 6 - We think they are a delight to hold and use.&nbsp;</p> <p>However, if you&rsquo;re used to a smaller phone you may well get on with the iPhone 6 better. It&rsquo;s 2.5mm thinner, a whopping 12.2mm shorter and 3.6mm less wide than the One M8.&nbsp;</p> <p>While their screen sizes aren&rsquo;t worlds apart - 4.7in to 5in - the iPhone 6 is a significantly smaller phone. Why? Part of it is because the HTC One M8 doesn&rsquo;t really try to be all that thin, and part is because of the lovely stereo front-facing speakers you get on HTC&rsquo;s phone. They significantly increase the phone&rsquo;s footprint.&nbsp;</p> <p>These BoomSound twins provide much beefier sound than most phone speakers including &ndash; we expect &ndash; the iPhone 6. In a year or two Tim Cook will probably wryly refer to the 4-inch days like an old, slightly embarrassing holiday romance.&nbsp;</p> <p>Still, bigger screens are better for just about everything apart from fitting in your pocket, and as we&rsquo;ve already seen, the iPhone 6 is about as slim as a 4.7-inch phone is going to get.</p> <p>Size has changed, but some other factors stay more-or-less the same as last year. The iPhone 6 still uses an IPS LCD panel, and from what we&#39;ve seen so far it still looks lovely.&nbsp;</p> <p>The HTC One M8 has a slightly larger 5-inch LCD screen. Its panel type is SLCD3 rather than IPS, but the technologies are so similar in their effects you could mistake them for twins. Overall, the M8&#39;s screen is a cracker, with great viewing angles, colours and (for an LCD) contrast.</p> <p>Where the two differ a bit is in resolution. While Apple calls the new iPhone 6 resolution Retina HD, this is &ndash; as the more cynical among you may have guessed &ndash; marketing nonsense.</p> <p>The iPhone 6 has a pixel density of 326ppi &ndash; the exact same density as the iPhone 5S. It does this by using a rather weird-sounding 1334 x 750 pixel resolution. You don&rsquo;t see those everyday.&nbsp;</p> <p>We soon will.&nbsp;</p> <p>HTC&rsquo;s One M8 has a much higher resolution 1080p screen that offers greater pixel density of 441ppi, despite having a significantly larger screen. To those with eagle eyes or a case of tech pedantry, this difference may be quite obvious. But you will need to get your eyes pretty close to the glass to notice it.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a difference in the glass these phone use. The HTC One M8 has good old Gorilla Glass 3 &ndash; used here, there and everywhere these days &ndash; while the iPhone 6 has &lsquo;ion-strengthened&rsquo; glass.&nbsp;</p> <p>This could in theory mean it&rsquo;s Gorilla Glass 3 with an ultra-thin layer of Sapphire on top, But you&rsquo;d need to get Tim Cook extremely drunk, or have incriminating pictures of Phil Schiller, to wring it out of them. Hopefully a teardown will tell us the truth soon.</p> <p>It&#39;s tough to make a call on this without having spent an extended period with the new iPhone, but for now we&#39;re going to say that the bigger size and higher resolution of the M8 gives it the edge.</p> <p><strong>Winner: <em>HTC One M8</em></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="850" height="637" title="What&#039;s your size?" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Untitled-1_6_1.jpg?1410917195" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Luscious screen" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/HTC_One_M8-review-lockscreen_6.jpg?1410917195" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: Pixel frugal or pixel poor </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple and HTC are big believers in the idea that cameras aren&rsquo;t about megapixels.</p> <p>So while rival flagships from Samsung, Sony and LG have 12, 16 or even 20MP cameras, the iPhone 6 sticks with just an 8MP sensor - exactly the same size as that on the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 5, and the iPhone 4S.</p> <p>That&#39;s not to say that it hasn&#39;t been improved. Each individual pixel is now bigger, which should result in more detailed photos in good light, plus it should also be able to focus faster as it uses in-sensor phase detection, much like the Samsung Galaxy S5.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPhone 6 also has image stabilisation - software-based rather than the physical kind on the 6 Plus or LG G3 - which should improve low-light photography, and it&nbsp;can also now record super slow-motion video at 240fps in addition to capturing standard 1080p footage.</p> <p>The HTC One M8 is even more extreme in its pixel hatred, bringing a mere 4-megapixel sensor to the smartphone party. It likes to call its megapixels UltraPixels, but all that really means is that the sensor pixels are a bit bigger than those of most mobile phones. If a giant DSLR uses megapixels, they&rsquo;re good enough for the HTC One M8. </p> <p>It doesn&#39;t do this just on a whim, though - the idea being that a lesser number of bigger pixels will result in better low-light photography, at the expense of being able to blow your pictures up big. And it works, with the M8&#39;s low-light performance beating that of almost any other phone.</p> <p>It also has a rather unusual trick up its sleeve: it uses two sensors and two lenses to help produce photos with a 3D element and ones with blurred backgrounds &ndash; making your photos look as though they&rsquo;ve been taken with a much fancier camera and a much fancier lens.&nbsp; It doesn&rsquo;t always work, but with a bit of luck it can really pep up your portraits.&nbsp;</p> <p>So both cameras have their special skills, but ultimately, the verdict&#39;s out on this round until we&#39;ve really put the iPhone&#39;s camera through its paces.</p> <p><strong>Winner: <em>Draw</em></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iwatch/review" target="_blank">Apple Watch hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Double vision" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/HTC_One_M8-review-duo-camera_6.jpg?1410917195" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-6-06_1.jpg?1410917195" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power and storage </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The HTC One M8 is an excellent performer among Androids. It has a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 CPU with 2GB of RAM and we&#39;ve never known it to be fazed whether by high-end games, multi-tasking or full HD video.&nbsp;</p> <p>Just look at the numbers and it seems like it should cream the iPhone 6, which has a dual-core CPU. It&rsquo;s not quite that simple, though.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPhone 6&rsquo;s new Apple A8 processor is a few steps more advanced than the Snapdragon 801. First, it&rsquo;s 64-bit where the Snapdragon is fundamentally a 32-bit processor.&nbsp;</p> <p>The way it&rsquo;s made is also more advanced. Where the 801 uses a 28nm process, the iPhone 6 is a 20nm CPU. And, yes, the lower the number the better.&nbsp;</p> <p>Without wanting to dig too deep, this means the transistors that make up the processor are 20 nanometers in size in the iPhone. And smaller transistors make a processor more efficient.&nbsp;</p> <p>Comparing an iPhone with an Android is never going to be 100% fair, though, as their power is used in different ways. For now, we&#39;ll settle for saying that we expect the iPhone to at least match the M8.&nbsp;</p> <p>Of course the other type of power is that which you get from a battery, and the M8 excels here too. We generally get a full day&#39;s use from it - and trust us, we&#39;re the kind of people who really do put a phone through its paces. Plus, it has a superb battery-saving mode which can eke hours more out of a mere few percent.</p> <p>It&#39;s hard to say how the iPhone 6 will fare, but Apple itself only claims 10hrs of talk time (HTC reckons 20hrs for the M8), so we&#39;d be very suprised if it ends up topping its rival on this front.</p> <p>Finally, the M8 also has one other thing the iPhone 6 lacks: a microSD slot. No iPhone has ever offered one of these, and there are no signs that&rsquo;s going to change any time soon.</p> <p>However, you can get a 128GB iPhone 6, which will store enough cat photos and episodes of&nbsp;<em>Dawson&rsquo;s Creek</em>&nbsp;to fill a month&rsquo;s worth of miserable, lonely evenings. Of course, you&rsquo;ll probably have to sell your kidneys and most of your family to afford a 128GB iPhone 6, but that&rsquo;ll just key you into Dawson&rsquo;s angst all the more.</p> <p><strong>Winner: <em>HTC One (M8)</em></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="A8, m8" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/a8_0.jpg?1410917195" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS: The classic battle </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>iOS or Android? It&rsquo;s a question we&rsquo;ve ben dealing with for the better part of a decade now.&nbsp;</p> <p>The HTC One M8 uses Android 4.4 with HTC Sense on top while the iPhone 6 has iOS 8. The big news for iOS 8 is that it massively increases support for mobile payments, now that NFC is included in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (and eventually the Apple Watch).</p> <p>What&#39;s more, if you also have a Mac running the new OS X Yosemite (still in beta right now, but due to be released next month), you&#39;ll get access to extra tricks via Yosemite&#39;s new Continuity feature, such as being able to start an email on your laptop and seamlessly finish it on your iPhone.</p> <p>Other features new to iOS 8 include the Health app, which will integrate the data from all of your fitness-tracking gadgets, the ability to run 3rd-party keyboards, improved notifications, extra gaming potential and improvements to iCloud. Frankly, there&#39;s too much new stuff to really go into it all here, so check out our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/ios-8/review">iOS 8 preview</a> for the full deal.&nbsp;</p> <p>The HTC One M8 runs a customised version of Android 4.4, called HTC Sense. And as the One M8 already has NFC, it has the same mobile payments potential as the iPhone 6. Android just hasn&rsquo;t got its act together in the same way as Apple.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s one key added feature in HTC Sense, and it&rsquo;s called BlinkFeed. This is a very tough one to call. iOS 8 is a bit more streamlined, and iOS still offers a better selection of games, and apps for creative types. However, HTC Sense is one of our favourite custom Android interfaces and Android on the whole is still a far more open, customisable platform.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s close, but Google needs to release Android L to really pull ahead of Apple at this point.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Winner: <em>iPhone 6</em></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Very handy" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-6-08_0.jpg?1410917195" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="BlinkFeed ftw" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/HTC_One_M8-review-blinkfeed-2_4.jpg?1410917195" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 6 looks like being Apple&#39;s best iPhone yet, having had the size upgrade it so desperately needed while also gaining more power, a few new camera skills and a feature-packed new OS. If you&rsquo;ve local back-ups taken using iTunes, they will be searchable.</p> <p>You&rsquo;ll need to update iTunes (spit) to continue periodically backing up to your computer, which we assume you&rsquo;re also backing up, right? So rather nice. It gives the Galaxy Alpha the cool and hard feel that is largely behind why metal phones feel more expensive than plastic ones. We&rsquo;re simple creatures.</p> <p>As far as design experiments go, it&rsquo;s a pretty successful one. The edges are quite severe and sharp (but bevelled), rather like the iPhone 5S, but as the 4.7in Galaxy Alpha isn&rsquo;t too large, handling it is dead easy.</p> <p>Get over the nice feel of that band of metal and things come back down to earth. The back plate is still a flimsy piece of plastic as is the inner frame. The band of metal is just that &ndash; a thin border that sits around the phone.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not the most coherent phone design we&rsquo;ve ever seen either. A bit like the Nokia Lumia 930, the mix of metal and plastic means it doesn&rsquo;t have the design purity of the most jaw-dropping phones. The Alpha is Samsung doing pretty, not gallery-worthy.</p> <p>You also lose out on water resistance while gaining the extra bit of metal. Where the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5-mini/samsung-galaxy-s5-mini/review">Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini</a> has treated ports and a rubber seal on the inside of its back cover so you can dunk it in water, the Alpha is not designed to withstand apple-bobbing. It&rsquo;s a bummer, and shows that Samsung hasn&rsquo;t really put its all into the phone. It&rsquo;s just er, testing the waters.</p> <p>That said, waterproofing is the only hardware extra we really missed. You still get a fingerprint scanner under the Home button, and a heart rate sensor on the back. We&rsquo;d probably trade away both to have a phone you can use in the bath, though.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5-mini/samsung-galaxy-s5-mini/review">Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini tested&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Samsung finally gave us a metal band .. no, not the head banging type " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-4.jpg?1410861642" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="Flimsy " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-11.jpg?1410861642" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1600" height="900" title="Remind you of iAnything? It&rsquo;s a 4.7in display &ndash; smaller than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Galaxy S5</a> but a perfectly good size if you&rsquo;re after a slightly smaller phone.</p> <p>What&rsquo;s not as great is the resolution. The Galaxy Alpha has a 720p screen when most phones at the price have 1080p ones. Shop around online and you can even get an LG G3 for not much more &ndash; and that phone has an even higher-res 2K screen.</p> <p>In the Alpha, the limits of a 720p screen are quite obvious if you go looking for them, more so than an LCD screen. Why? It&rsquo;s all down to the kind of display the phone uses. It&rsquo;s a Super AMOLED display, one that uses a PenTile subpixel arrangement. Without getting too techy, this uses a pixel array that makes areas of block white look a little fuzzy, and text a bit less sharp. As a result the Galaxy Alpha looks a fair bit less sharp than even the S$318&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/moto-g/motorola-moto-g/review">4.5in Moto G</a>.</p> <p>Top brightness isn&rsquo;t quite at the same level as the Galaxy S5. While you can see the Alpha display in bright sunlight, it&rsquo;s not as clear as the S5.</p> <p>It still looks very good, though, and the Alpha offers you loads of control over how vivid the colours are. Fresh out of the box they&rsquo;re a bit too lively &ndash; many people love them like this &ndash; but switch the screen to &lsquo;basic&rsquo; and you get a similar sort of colour accuracy the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Galaxy S5</a> is capable of. Like your colours truly overblown? That&rsquo;s an option too. Like other OLED screens, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha also gets you incredibly deep blacks, perfect blacks in fact, and contrast is top-notch. Just a shame about that resolution, then.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Reads well outdoors but it&#039;s no S5 " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-cf.jpg?1410861642" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung Galaxy Alpha tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 4.7in LCD Super AMOLED (1280X720)<br /><strong>OS</strong>: Android 4.4.4<br /><strong>Processor</strong>: Exynos 5 Octa 5430 1.8GHz processor<br /><strong>RAM</strong>: 2GB<br /><strong>Storage</strong>: 32GB<br /><strong>Bluetooth</strong>: 4.0<br /><strong>Water &amp; Dust Resistance</strong>: None<br /><strong>Battery</strong>: Li-Polymer 1860mAh<br /><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 132.4 X 65.5 X 6.7mm<br /><strong>Weight</strong>: 115g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS: all the fours </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Again, there are a few little cuts compared to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Galaxy S5</a>, but the software is very similar. You get Android 4.4.4 at launch, and Samsung&rsquo;s latest custom Android interface.</p> <p>In the last year, Samsung has done a lot to try and make its Android UI a bit more streamlined, a bit less like juggling a bag of features that keeps on spilling over. And it&rsquo;s mostly successful. The basics are clean and simple, and it doesn&rsquo;t waggle all of its extra bits in your face.</p> <p>However, there&rsquo;s plenty under the surface, and that does mean the Settings menu is absolutely gargantuan. It looks nothing like the regular Android menu and newbies may get phased.</p> <p>Samsung packs a bunch of extra apps into the Alpha too. Some of these have been around for years, like the S Planner calendar, but others like S Health are needed to make use of the phone&rsquo;s actual hardware. S Health is where you monitor your heart rate using the sensor on the back, and it&rsquo;s also the app that tracks your steps each day &ndash; if you want the Alpha to act as a fitness tracker. Samsung has a habit of making things less simple than they could be, and there are plenty of ways to clean the phone up if you don&rsquo;t get on with these apps. Some can be uninstalled, but you can also hide those you can&rsquo;t.</p> <p>You get 32GB storage as standard, so app storage space isn&rsquo;t much of an issue.</p> <p>Unlike some other Samsung devices we&rsquo;ve tested in the last year or so, the Galaxy Alpha doesn&rsquo;t suffer from any major performance stuttering. This seems more likely to be down to Samsung tightening-up its software rather than improvements in hardware, but the engine running here is very, very fast too.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="S Health, S Planner, it&#039;s all here " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-8.jpg?1410861642" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Wiggle my joystick, luv </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Performance is the one area the Alpha just doesn&rsquo;t compromise.&nbsp;</p> <p>It uses a Samsung Exynos 5430 Octa-core processor, which has four Cortex-A15 cores and four Cortex-A7 ones. In the Geekbench 3 benchmark it scores an extremely impressive 3086 points &ndash; even more than the 2800-odd points you might get from a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Galaxy S5</a>. For a phone with &lsquo;only&rsquo; a 720p screen, this is masses of power.&nbsp;</p> <p>Gaming performance is excellent, and you get the extra little graphical flashy bits in top-end games like Dead Trigger 2 that were missing when we used the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5-mini/samsung-galaxy-s5-mini/review">Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini</a>. It&rsquo;s a surprise powerhouse, and has 2GB RAM too.&nbsp;</p> <p>Those gaming skills do make us wish the internal speaker was a little better, though. Sound quality and top volume are pretty impressive for a phone this thin &ndash; although the sound is a little harsh at top volume &ndash; but the output is very much mono, and it&rsquo;s too easy to block the speaker when you&rsquo;re doing a bit of landscape gaming.&nbsp;</p> <p>There is one benefit to a bottom-firing speaker, though. It means the back of the Alpha doesn&rsquo;t vibrate like a nightclub subwoofer when the volume&rsquo;s turned up as it does in the Galaxy S5 and the S5 Mini.&nbsp;</p> <p>We did also notice that the Galaxy Alpha seems to suffer from the old problem of some metal-coated phones &ndash; signal issues. It&rsquo;s decent enough in normal use, but if you cover too much of the phone&rsquo;s sides your signal level will drop like a stone. It never totally killed the signal, but is a sign that the plastic inlays in the metal frame haven&rsquo;t been implemented quite well enough.&nbsp;</p> <p>See the little white bits in the metal surround? These are usually used to improve signal for things like Wi-FI and mobile signal when the sides of a phone are largely metal. Aside from this, though, actual call quality is perfectly fine. You just need to be a bit careful about how you handle the Galaxy Alpha at times.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="A few signal issues here and there " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-5.jpg?1410861642" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="No S5 style vibrations with this speaker " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/s5-alpha-4.jpg?1410861642" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Speedy Snapper </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Samsung Galaxy Alpha camera sits somewhere between the<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review"> Galaxy S5</a> and<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5-mini/samsung-galaxy-s5-mini/review"> S5 Mini</a> in terms of image quality. But it certainly has the shooting performance we&rsquo;ve come to expect from Samsung&rsquo;s top-end phones.&nbsp;</p> <p>Focusing and shooting speed are excellent. In daylight you can shoot 2-3 photos a second without even using one of the burst shot modes. Samsung really is a master in this field, and it makes taking photos with your phone so much fun &ndash; not to mention making action shots easier to catch.&nbsp;</p> <p>Camera resolution is a bit worse than the S5 &ndash; the Alpha has a 12-megapixel sensor instead of a 16-megapixel one. However, you can still get loads of detail out of the Alpha and we&rsquo;re pretty impressed by its shooting consistency. It&rsquo;s simply dead easy to get good shots out of this little camera.&nbsp;</p> <p>HDRs are fast to take and super-effective, and as long as lighting is decent, colour accuracy is good. Non-flash night or indoors shots do start looking a little undersaturated, but they do in most phones. It&rsquo;s good enough to replace a basic compact camera, in other words. Like the S5, shooting gets a fair bit slower in low lighting thanks to the way the low-light Picture Stabilisation mode works, but even that&rsquo;s not too bad.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Alpha is also equipped with a single-LED flash and a front camera for those selfie moments. And the range of extra modes is much the same as the S5. So you get background-blurring Selective Focus and loads of smart burst modes. You can even shoot video in Ultra HD resolution.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong>&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/sony-xperia-z3-compact/review">Sony Xperia Z3 Compact - with 20.7MP camera - hands on impressions&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="It focuses and shoots very quickly " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-camera-2.jpg?1410861642" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="Handy LED flash " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-camrea.jpg?1410861642" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1600" height="900" title="Selfie cam present and correct " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-selfie.jpg?1410861642" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Short on Stamina </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One bit that has been chopped down a bit in the Alpha is the battery. The phone&rsquo;s processor is efficient, but it&rsquo;s not a miracle worker.&nbsp;</p> <p>In general use, we found that the Galaxy Alpha comfortably lasts the day with charge to spare, but you really do have to cut your use significantly to get anywhere near two days, or even a full day and a half. We have a feeling Samsung may have sacrificed the battery size a bit to get the design of the phone exactly as it wanted. Battery life is fine but better in several of Samsung&rsquo;s other phones, the Alpha is not waterproof and it needs to keep an eye on aerial performance if it wants to avoid an &ldquo;Antennagate&quot; style scandal in the Galaxy S6.&nbsp;</p> <p>Ultimately, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is a neat experiment in Samsung&rsquo;s phone designs that tells us a lot about the way its mobiles are probably headed. That means the screen is bigger than that of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5s</a>&nbsp;and almost matches the 4.7in display on the original <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/htc-one/review">HTC One</a>. But it&#39;s all about dimensions. Put simply, you can hold this comfortably in one hand, even if said hand is tinier than average.&nbsp;</p> <p>Build-wise, the Z3 Compact puts most Android smartphones to shame.&nbsp;Sure, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/htc-one-mini-2-hands/review">HTC One Mini 2</a> has a curved aluminium body but its insides don&#39;t exactly match its outsides. And most other scaled-down handsets stick to plastic, big bezels and telltale signs of corner cutting.&nbsp;</p> <p>Not so here.&nbsp;</p> <p>While Sony&#39;s decided to drop the metal frame from the Z3 Compact, it still looks and feels beautifully well made.&nbsp; The all-glass rear is present, as are the love-it-or-loathe-it aluminium power button and shallow volume rocker. The dedicated camera button returns and apart from a few minor tweaks - the LED flash has been moved slightly further away from the rear camera, for instance - this is the same shrunken down OmniBalance design we fell for in January. </p> <p>Like the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/sony-xperia-z1-compact/review">Z1 Compact</a>&nbsp;it&#39;s waterproof, with the same newly improved dust resistance as the larger Z3 - that&#39;s IP65 and IP68 certified. But like the Z1 and Z2, neither Xperia sacrifices any style to practicalities.&nbsp;</p> <p>Plus, while we&#39;ve moaned in the past about the ergonomics of Sony&#39;s smartphone builds, this time round both the Z3 and Z3 Compact are easier to hold.&nbsp; Both get nylon caps on their corners (to help prevent smashes) and there are so many buttons, pogo pins and port flaps that there isn&#39;t much room for untouched edges to run your fingers along anyway.&nbsp;</p> <p>The bezels are still a little on the roomy side, but overall it&#39;s a big improvement over Z1 Compact, with Sony somehow managing to fit a 4.6in screen into a handset that&#39;s roughly the same size as its 4.3in predecessor. It&#39;s also much slimmer - 8.7mm rather than 9.5mm - which all adds up to it looking and feeling much classier. It&#39;s still not as light as an 112g&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5s</a>&nbsp;but 127g is light enough for us.&nbsp; </p><p>And last but not least, to signify this as a fun, mass-market smartphone Sony is adding bold orange and green colour options to the existing black and white versions.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5-mini/samsung-galaxy-s5-mini/review">Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="And I want my corners.. Two reasons. Sony reckons the human eye finds it hard to discern the extra pixels. And it wants to save us all from having to recharge at work and in bed by virtue of a claimed two-day battery life.&nbsp;</p> <p>The slight problem here is that by sticking with a 720p resolution while making its screen bigger, Sony has effectively reduced its sharpness. So while the old Z1 Compact&#39;s 1280x720 resolution on a 4.3in display equates to&nbsp;341ppi, when stretched across 4.6 inches that falls to 320ppi. Will that difference be noticeable? We&#39;ll have to wait until we get a review model back to Stuff Towers to answer that. </p> <p>What we can say already is that when we loaded up the same image on both the Z3 and Z3 Compact, we did spot some loss of detail on the smaller unit next to the full HD screen of the bigger model.&nbsp;</p> <p>Still, while full HD would have been lovely - and would have made it one of the sharpest phones on the planet - it&#39;s still bright, with natural but appealing colours. It&#39;s also slightly bigger than the 4.5in 720p screens on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/htc-one-mini-2-hands/review">One Mini 2</a> and Galaxy S5 Mini and if you like things punchy, you can turn on Sony&#39;s X-Reality for mobile tech to boost contrast and saturation.&nbsp;</p> <p>Sony&#39;s battery strategy for the Z3 Compact extends beyond giving it fewer pixels. As well as the extra efficiency that the fast and powerful Snapdragon 801 processor brings (the Z1 Compact ran on the 800), Sony has also worked to make the display more efficient. There&#39;s no name for the tech but Sony claims that the display retains a memory of the picture onscreen, so that it doesn&#39;t need to reload it over and over again.&nbsp;</p> <p>When we tested the<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/sony-xperia-z1-compact/review"> Z1 Compact</a>&nbsp;we got a full day&#39;s use out of it.&nbsp; But Sony says that in its own tests both the Z3 and Z3 Compact make it through two days of normal usage versus 1.4 days for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/sony-xperia-z2-sirius/review">Xperia Z2</a>. The Z3 Compact has a bigger 2600mAh battery than that in the mini Z1 and in our brief play, the battery percentage on the Z3 Compact barely dropped. All of which bodes well, but we&#39;ll be putting Sony&#39;s claims to the test in our full review.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-6-what-it-needs-do-reclaim-top-spot/feature">What the iPhone 6 needs to do in order to reclaim top spot</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Z3 (top) and its smaller Compact sibling" alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Compact hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-compact-screen.png?1410859973" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Note: Using both phones together like this is a waste of money" alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Compact hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-compact-top.png?1410859973" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera Tweaks and Hi-res Audio </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In many ways the Z3 Compact is identical to the Z3. For starters both get the aforementioned Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, which is clocked at 2.5GHz and which should make moving around homescreens, the web and menus as smooth as full-fat butter.</p> <p>Another thing they share is the camera. Now we&nbsp;didn&#39;t get much of a play with it during our hands-on time, so we&#39;ll save judgement for the full reviews. But the headlines are that it takes the superb 20.7MP sensor from the Xperia Z2, complete with&nbsp;excellent Superior Auto mode,&nbsp;and gives it a new 25mm wide-angle G lens, higher 12,800 ISO sensitivity and tweaked SteadyShot software.&nbsp; It also gets a few more social camera apps, the best being live YouTube broadcasting.&nbsp;</p> <p>In our brief experience,&nbsp;framing and AF are as fast as ever, while&nbsp;its ability to see in the dark looks especially promising.&nbsp;Frankly, we can&#39;t wait to pit it against whatever Cupertino is cooking up - with all the rumours at the moment pointing to a&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iphone-6/review">4.7in iPhone 6</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>Music is another area where it matches its bigger sibling. Xperias have long ranked alongside iDevices as our favourites for music playback, but the Z3 and Z3 Compact promise to take things up a level. Both get hi-res audio capabilities, if you can get hold of the right files, but even if you can&#39;t then they&#39;ll use Sony&#39;s own DSEE HX uprating tech to turn lowly MP3s into near hi-res audio tracks.</p> <p>Finally, there are no real differences between the handsets in terms of their Android skin. Both get the usual What&#39;s New widgets recommending content to consume and both also get the new Lifelog app - intended to work with new wearables such as the SmartWatch 3. However, this wasn&#39;t quite ready for our hands-on time with it. We&#39;ll hopefully have more on it very soon from the IFA 2014 showfloor.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:<strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/review">Long term test - Sony PS4</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Z3 Compact&#039;s skin is identical to that on the Z3" alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Compact hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-compact-homescreen.png?1410859973" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Best head down to your local hi-res audio store quick " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 Compact hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-compact-audio-settings.png?1410859973" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Play PS4 games on your Z3 Compact </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Then there&#39;s the PlayStation connection. Sort of. At first glance - and in press shots - it looks like a case of &quot;spot the difference&quot; between the Z3 and Z2.&nbsp;</p> <p>But the tweaks that Sony has made really do make an incredible difference. The difference between &quot;I know it&#39;s well-specced and well-built but I just don&#39;t love it&quot; and &quot;I need one right now&quot;. You need to get one in your hand to really appreciate it.&nbsp;</p> <p>The aluminium and tempered glass OmniBalance design now has rounded sides and, while it&#39;s still an angular body and won&#39;t sit completely snug in the palm like a One (M8), it&#39;s enough to make it much more comfortable. It&#39;s a compromise - Sony want OmniBalance to be iconic the way a BMW or Mercedes design is - but it&#39;s a compromise that allows for the contours of human hands while keeping the year-and-a-bit old Xperia aesthetic.&nbsp;</p> <p>It also helps massively that the Xperia Z3 weighs 152g, that&#39;s 11g lighter than the Z2 and probably achieved by the smaller battery. It&#39;s also ever so slightly smaller in both dimensions and skinnier than the Z2 at 7.3mm thick, all of which makes it feel less like a heavy block and more like the sleek wonder-phone it really is.&nbsp;</p> <p>With all that glass you might be fretting about smashing it but Sony has added new nylon caps to the corners. Apparently handsets are most likely to be dropped on corners so replacing the old aluminium is designed to make the Z3 more durable. We thought it best not to drop the Z3 within minutes of meeting it but we can say that the new corners don&#39;t ruin the design - in fact, we rather like them.&nbsp;</p> <p>A big advantage of the OmniBalance design is that it&rsquo;s water- and dust-proof, so the Z3 is capable of withstanding anything the weather can throw at it &ndash; as well as enabling you to make calls from the shower and watch Netflix in your Jacuzzi. The new IP65/68 rating is the highest waterproofing you can get on a smartphone right now (surviving up to 30 minutes in up to 1.5m of water) and a new higher dust resistance too.&nbsp;</p> <p>We managed to play around with a few Z3s with the white model being our favourite - it&#39;s less reflecty than the black model. There&#39;s also two new colours in the form of copper and silver green. Hey, at least it&#39;s not&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/how-ruin-best-looking-phone-world-step-1-pink/news">pink</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8) reviewed&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Clean lines, lush materials - only the iPhone and HTC match this " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-z3-back_1_0.jpg?1410859620" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="280" height="210" title="Slim and solid but still pretty droppable " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-side-view_0.jpg?1410859620" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="280" height="210" title="Water, dust and fuzzproof - kind of " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-top-jack_0.jpg?1410859620" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="280" height="210" title="A lovely new curved frame - music to our eyes and fingers " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-z3-sim-slot_0.png?1410859620" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony Xperia Z3 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 5.2in 1920x1080 (424ppi)&nbsp;<br /><strong>Processor</strong>: 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad core&nbsp;<br /><strong>RAM</strong>: 3GB<br /><strong>OS</strong>: Android 4.4 KitKat&nbsp;<br /><strong>Storage:</strong>&nbsp;16GB/32GB (+microSD)&nbsp;<br /><strong>Battery:</strong>&nbsp;3100mAh<br /><strong>Camera</strong>: 20.7MP, 1080p/4K video rear, 2.2MP front, 1080p video<br /><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Wi-Fi, 3G/4G, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC&nbsp;<br /><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 146 x 72 x 7.3mm<br /><strong>Weight</strong>: 152g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Brighter screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>When the Xperia Z2&#39;s screen is one of the best we&#39;ve ever laid eyes on, we&#39;re not going to complain when Sony leaves it alone.&nbsp;</p> <p>And that&#39;s what it&#39;s done. It&#39;s 20% brighter than the Z2&#39;s screen, now 600 candela, which means it&#39;s easier to make out in direct sunlight. We haven&#39;t tested it side by side with the blindingly bright Galaxy S5 yet but we&#39;re sure it will match it for outdoors use.&nbsp;</p> <p>Apart from that, it&#39;s the same sharp, punchy 5.2in Full HD screen we saw - and loved - on the Xperia Z2. A quick scroll through Sony&#39;s preloaded hi-res snaps shows that blacks don&#39;t look quite as inky as we&#39;ve seen on the Galaxy S5. But for more vibrant colours and higher contrast, there&#39;s always the X-Reality engine setting to play with.&nbsp;</p> <p>Why not 2K? It sounds like Sony isn&#39;t planning to put a 2K screen on a 5in smartphone anytime soon. Or even its 8in Z3 Tablet Compact. It says it&#39;s too hard for the human eye to discern the difference. Now, if you&#39;ve got eyes like Stuff&#39;s trained pixel hunters then you can see more detail in video, images and ebooks on 2K screens than regular 1080p ones. But that&#39;s side by side with exactly the same high def content. For most people, we agree with Sony that a 424ppi display is plenty of pixels for your peepers to compute.&nbsp;</p> <p>As we&#39;ve seen with the 2K LG G3 and the Oppo Find 7 and 7a, there is a trade-off between resolution and battery life too. Rather than gamble on 2K and fewer hours between charges, Sony&#39;s gone and upped the battery life on the Z3.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3 - Stuff&#39;s no.1 smartphone - reviewed</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Live Colour LED/ Triluminous/ X-Reality. No surprise then that Sony claims both smartphones will last two days of &#39;regular use&#39;.&nbsp;</p> <p>Skeptical? So were we. There&#39;s a smaller 3100mAh battery (versus the Z2&#39;s 3200mAh unit) for starters. A brighter screen too. And Sony reckons the Z3 will last two days when the Z2 lasts 1.4 and the Z1 lasts 1.2 days?&nbsp;</p> <p>Sony puts the extra efficiency down to two things - the Snapdragon 801 processor, here clocked at 2.5GHz but also present in the Xperia Z2. And a new screen technology that it&#39;s developed which retains the memory of whatever is on the screen meaning less reloading and more efficiency. It doesn&#39;t have a catchy name like Sony&#39;s other screen technologies but we looking forward to putting the Z3 through its paces. The only true two day flagship we&#39;ve tested is last year&#39;s brilliant LG G2 - if it can match that (which the G3 doesn&#39;t) we&#39;ll be very, very impressed.&nbsp;</p> <p>Nosing around the settings, Stamina mode returns with a Samsung and HTC-style monochrome-screened, ultra power saving mode absent. Though it&#39;s worth noting that the above test times are without Stamina turned on. Any bets on how long we can get a Z3 to last for with this turned on? 2.7 days anyone?&nbsp;</p> <p>As for performance, we didn&#39;t see a single stutter in our short time moving around homescreens, browsers and galleries. There&#39;s no real lag on the Xperia Z2 so this isn&#39;t a surprise and the Z3 is clocked slightly higher with a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM.&nbsp;</p> <p>That stocking-smooth experience is of course helped by Android 4.4 KitKat which, again, isn&#39;t too heavily trussed up by Sony. Its recommendation widgets remain as do the Walkman app and Movies and Music services plus you can make the most of the 5.2in screen with floating &#39;small app&#39; windows. Expect to see more of Sony&#39;s cross-platform lifelogging app er, Lifelog, too as it debuts on its new Android Wear device the SmartWatch 3. Overall, it&#39;s a lean Android skin that doesn&#39;t get too annoying.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Samsung Galaxy S5 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="No monochrome shut-down shenanigans here just a brilliant Stamina mode " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-z3-battery-1_0.png?1410859620" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="280" height="210" title="That 67% should last well over a day - huzzah" alt="Sony Xperia Z3 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-z3-corner-straight_0.jpg?1410859620" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: stop me if you&#039;ve heard this before </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>When the Xperia Z2&#39;s 20.7MP camera was one of the best we&#39;ve seen on a smartphone..&nbsp;</p> <p>No, really. All that Sony needed to do was make the best better and it&#39;s done so with choice tweaks. There&#39;s a new 25mm G lens for wide angle shots and improved SteadyShot for video. The idea is to put an end to shaky footage so you can compete with Hyperlapsers on iOS for smooth video when moving about - it worked well when we demo&#39;d it by running with the Z3 versus wobble-tastic standard video.&nbsp;</p> <p>Its main focus though is making the Xperia Z3 the low-light photography king as the sensor now has light sensitivity up to IS0 12800. By comparison most phones will go up to ISO 800 or so before giving up.</p> <p>We had a quick &#39;go&#39; of taking a picture by pointing the Z3&#39;s lens into a completely closed off, dark box in Low Light mode and the results were pretty jaw-dropping. This Xperia&#39;s been eating its carrots.&nbsp;</p> <p>Now, as with the Z2 there are some caveats and you do need to learn your way around Sony&#39;s camera app to get the best out of it. For instance, in manual mode you get maximum ISO of 3200 and for video its 2000. Just as certain resolutions - such as 20.7MP - are only available in manual mode. It&#39;s one to spend some time with but once you do the images are mind-blowing.&nbsp;</p> <p>Superior Auto mode is still there and is still brilliant but until we get a final device in to test, we&#39;d be surprised if the<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g3/lg-g3/review">&nbsp;LG G3</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5s</a>&nbsp;don&#39;t stay on top for point and shoot photos as sometimes the<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/sony-xperia-z2/review">&nbsp;Xperia Z2</a>&nbsp;just doesn&#39;t quite get the shot every time.&nbsp;</p> <p>To fill out the features sheet, Sony has thrown in some more of its hit and miss social camera apps. The best of these is the blogger-friendly live broadcasting to YouTube feature, following on from live broadcasting to Facebook in past Xperia phones. But there&#39;s also Face In to add a selfie bubble to shots, AR fun which gives you more effects to layer onto pics and Multi Camera which lets you combine up to three smartphones or accessories (like the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony-cyber-shot-dsc-qx10/review">QX10 lens</a>) to stitch together different angles of one scene.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong>&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/sony-xperia-z2/review">See full resolution sample pics taken with the Xperia Z2 in our review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Live YouTube broadcasting, nice " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-z3-camera-1_0.jpg?1410859620" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="280" height="210" title="Superior Auto mode will save the day " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 hands on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/z3-camera-2_0.jpg?1410859620" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Audiophiles, listen up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>LG got there first with hi-res audio but Sony will no doubt own it.&nbsp;</p> <p>That&#39;s because Xperia smartphones have been our favourite Androids for sound quality when listening to decent quality tracks for a while now, even given the iPhone a run for its money as a music player. So the addition of hi-res audio capabilities makes perfect sense. Sure, there&#39;s not a whole lot of places to get the files but once you do, you&#39;re laughing.&nbsp;</p> <p>Sony&#39;s also pushing its own DSEE HX engine promising to uprate your lower quality MP3s to near high resolution, focusing on the higher frequencies - this is available as a setting when listening through the Walkman app. We&#39;ll give this a closer listen very soon but we&#39;re generally cautious when it comes to tech that magically improves the quality of files - as we are with upscaling to 4K.&nbsp;</p> <p>The front-facing stereo speakers sound OK but won&#39;t trouble the One (M8) on a first listen. There&#39;s always Sony headphones to take advantage of the Z3&#39;s digital noise cancelling - you don&#39;t hear the hum of the aeroplane and you don&#39;t need to charge your &#39;phones. Stay tuned throughout the IFA show, though, as we&#39;re making a beeline for a second play as we type.&nbsp;</p> <p>Because it&#39;s a genuinely exciting feature borrowed, of all places, from the much underhyped PS Vita. It allows Z3 smartphones and tablets to play real PS4 games over Wi-Fi when your PS4 console is turned on or on standby. You play using a DualShock 4 controller which can be used with a mount or alternatively you can prop the Xperia Z3 or 8in Z3 Tablet Compact up to see the screen.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&#39;s best over your home Wi-Fi network - the example Sony gives is if your kids want to watch something on the telly, you can continue playing upstairs on the Z3. But Sony also says it is possible to connect to another Wi-Fi network outside your house though there&#39;s no guarantee of the experience.&nbsp;</p> <p>The feature may come to other Xperias like the Z2 and Z2 Tablet but unsurprisingly Sony has zero plans to extend Remote Play outside the Xperia family. Quite right too as finally Sony&#39;s promise of a real ecosystem is coming together with Exmor sensors in smartphones, NFC in 160 of its products and now this brilliant PS4/Xperia mash-up.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong>&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-4/review">Long term test - PS4 review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="The gaming mount for DualShock 4 will be sold separately " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z3_0.png?1410859620" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="280" height="210" title="You can also play PS4 titles on the Z3 Tablet Compact " alt="Sony Xperia Z3 hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Xperia_Z3%20Tablet%20Compact_PS4_Black_0_0.jpg?1410859620" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sleeker, sexier and more capable than any Xperia flagship to date, the Z3 might be the smartphone that proves Sony&#39;s formula.&nbsp;</p> <p>OK it can&#39;t continue pumping out an iteration of its best smartphone every six months but Sony itself admits this won&#39;t be forever. For audiophiles aleady smitten with the Sony sound, the futureproof hi-res capabilities do the same.
