Quite why anyone would sweat all over their phone is a mystery to us, as is why rain and sweat aren&#39;t considered liquids anyway. Secondly, it also has a nicer screen. Now in pure spec terms the S4 has a higher pixel density than the S5 (441ppi to 432ppi), but despite that, we prefer the newer phone&#39;s screen: it&#39;s brighter, text is crisper and colours seem just a little more vibrant.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The S5&#039;s screen is a beauty" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 - reasons to upgrade from Samsung Galaxy S4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung_Galaxy_S5_review_42_2.jpg?1397123031" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 3) It&#039;s joined the 4K club </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>How important this is to you will depend on whether you have a 4K television or not. Still, the S5, with its Snapdragon 801 chip, doesn&#39;t appear to suffer to quite the same extent - it&#39;s not flawless, but it trips up far less frequently. Just as importantly, TouchWiz - the Samsung skin which sits over Android 4.4 KitKat - has been stripped back and simplified, making it easier to use. When combined with the bug-free operation, the whole user experience feels far slicker on the S5.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-nexus-5-long-term-test/feature" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5? We say &#39;where possible&#39; because you&#39;ll obviously need both a Wi-Fi connection and 4G sim for that to work. One caveat: Android 4.4 KitKat changed the way that apps work with external storage in order to improve security. The result is that you won&#39;t necessarily&nbsp;be able to copy all of your apps on to your microSD card; some will work, some won&#39;t. But music, videos, photos etc - they&#39;ll all be fine. This was true of the Galaxy S4 and it&rsquo;s true of the Galaxy S5 &ndash; although the newer model represents a definite evolution in build quality and looks.</p> <p>Yes, the S5 has a plastic body, but the matte, dimpled soft-touch feel is a level above the smooth, shiny S4&rsquo;s exterior. It&rsquo;s also a more solidly built phone overall, with less creaky flex in it and, more importantly, full protection against dust and water. The only question is by how much.</p> <p>In terms of battery life, the S4 sports a 2600mAh power plant while the S5 offers 2800mAh. While we&rsquo;re obviously a fan of new tech, 4K video is something that very few S5 users will be able to watch back &ndash; at least for a while.</p> <p>Samsung claims the S5 camera&rsquo;s autofocus is the fastest on any phone currently available (as quick as 0.3 seconds) and that it also has an improved high dynamic range shooting mode, the effects of which are previewed when you&rsquo;re composing shots.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Samsung Galaxy S5</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Samsung Galaxy S5" alt="Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Samsung Galaxy S5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-s5-and-s4-cameras.jpg?1394115236" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Feature face-off </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Samsung is always loading its Galaxy S phones with interesting (some might say gimmicky) features, and the S5 is no exception: the biggest new additions are the fingerprint scanner (worse than the iPhone 5s&rsquo;, better than the HTC One Max&rsquo;s) and the rear-mounted heart rate monitor, which works with an improved S Health app to boost the S5&rsquo;s fitness tracking credentials.</p> <p>It also offers the same S Voice speech-activated search as the S4, as well as the same Smart Screen eye-tracking and Air View finger tracking capabilities that let you quickly scroll though photo galleries and the like without touching the screen.</p> <p>Both phones run on Android 4.4 KitKat (the S4 after an upgrade) and feature Samsung&rsquo;s TouchWiz UI laid on top.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Samsung Galaxy S5</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Well, you probably don&rsquo;t need to read this section to work out that the S5 is a better phone than the S4 &ndash; Samsung wouldn&rsquo;t have released it otherwise. And if your regime is a pacy and powerful as the sound the headphones produce you’ll be fighting fit in no time.&nbsp;</p> <p><a href="http://www.beatsbydre.com/earphones/powerbeats/beats-powerbeats.html">www.beatsbydre.com</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Beats by Dre Powerbeats" alt="Beats by Dre Powerbeats" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Powerbeats.jpg?1380781670" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Once you’ve decided to pay this sort of money for headphones, you want a bit more than just great sound for your cash. At 130g, it's heavier than the iPhone – no surprise, as it's a considerably larger 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm versus the iPhone's 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm.</p> <p>Apple, meanwhile, has stuck with the tried-and-tested aluminium and glass build of the iPhone 5, adding a new <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/treasure-hunters-listen-gold-iphone-5s-real/news">gold-and-white finish</a> to the existing grey/black and silver/white editions. Look closely and you'll spot the new Touch ID fingerprint sensor in place of the familiar Home button – of which more below. The iPhone certainly feels more substantial in the hand, despite its 112g weight – though that's balanced out by the advantages of having a micro USB port as opposed to a Lightning connector, as well as the S4's replaceable battery and 64GB of expandable microSD storage.</p> <p>As far as we're concerned, the iPhone 5S wins out here – it's a sleek and stylish pair of Jimmy Choos to the S4's dull but practical wellington boots.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Apple iPhone 5S" alt="Apple iPhone 5S" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-5s-main_3.jpg?1379574924" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy S4" alt="Samsung Galaxy S4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-s4-design.jpg?1379574924" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen – bigger is better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Samsung Galaxy S4 packs an impressive 5in 1080p Super AMOLED screen, delivering 441ppi pixel density and tucked behind Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for safety.</p> <p>The iPhone 5S' screen is the same 4in, 1136x640px Retina Display found on both the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5C. At 326ppi, it's impressive – but it's hopelessly outclassed by the S4's bigger, higher-resolution effort. Of course, gadgeteers with smaller hands may find that the iPhone's screen makes for more comfortable surfing than the S4's big display.</p> <p>However, we have to hand it to the Galaxy S4 here – a 5in 1080p screen is pretty much standard issue on high-end phones. If you're buying on contract, you'll likely be hanging on to your next phone for two years – by which time the iPhone 5S screen is going to look very dated indeed.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S4" alt="Samsung Galaxy S4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-screen_0.jpg?1379574924" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Specs – Apple goes 64-bit </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple doesn't publish detailed hardware specs, but the 5S reportedly packs 2GB RAM along with its new A7 processor – the first 64-bit smartphone processor. Don't expect a massive increase in speed as a result, though – the A5's ARM v8 chip architecture is <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s-and-samsung-galaxy-s5-why-you-should-be-pumped-about-64-bit-smartphones/feature">likely more about future-proofing the iPhone</a> and powering hardware like the Touch ID sensor than delivering an immediate performance boost.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPhone 5S also features a new <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iphone-5s-constantly-tracks-your-movement/news">M7 motion co-processor</a>, which makes for more efficient power management while enabling constant motion tracking. So, expect a boost in battery life along with an array of new motion-sensing tricks – including health apps and contextual awareness. If you're in a moving vehicle, the iPhone won't try and connect to Wi-Fi networks, for example.</p> <p>The iPhone's standout new feature is the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. You can unlock your phone by either clicking and holding the sensor, or tapping the power button and then the sensor. It'll store up to five fingerprints; at present it's only used as a security measure, but when (if?) Apple lets developers at it, it has a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/9-genius-uses-iphone-5s-touch-id-fingerprint-sensor/feature">whole host of potential uses</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>The UK Galaxy S4 packs a quad-core 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 processor, rather than Samsung's own 1.6GHz octa-core processor – you also get 2GB RAM, a replaceable 2600mAh battery and 16, 32 and 64GB storage options (with support for an additional 64GB via microSD). Other features include NFC, an IR blaster and support for Air Gestures and Smart Scroll.</p> <p>Once again, Apple's refused to integrate smartphone features that are regarded as industry standards – like NFC and microSD – into the iPhone, in favour of gambling on a potentially revolutionary technology. Like Siri, Touch ID could have a whole host of applications – but only if Apple lets developers use it, and only if it's properly integrated with apps. It's too early to tell at this point – so if you're buying a phone based on how you'll use its features right now, we have to hand this round to the S4.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Apple iPhone 5S" alt="Apple iPhone 5S" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-5s-m7382105452_0.jpg?1379574924" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iphone-5s-camera-has-bigger-sensor-slo-mo/news">iPhone 5S' camera</a> has had a slight spec boost over that of its predecessor. Like the iPhone 5, the 5S features an 8MP snapper – but it features 1.5µ pixels instead of the 1.4µ pixels found on the iPhone 5. The aperture has been boosted from f2.4 to f2.2, as well. In theory, that should make for better low-light images, with reduced noise. The iSight camera will also shoot 1080p video at 30fps and 720p video at 120fps.&nbsp;</p> <p>Apple's kitted out the iPhone 5S camera with what it's calling a "true tone" flash – it reads whether you're taking a photo under tungsten (yellow) lighting or daylight (blue) lighting conditions. When you take a snap, it'll then flash its twin amber and white LED flashes in varying intensities, effectively colour balancing the scene. Apple claims the iPhone 5S can create up to 1000 different colour temperatures with its flash – we'll be checking this feature in detail in our full review.</p> <p>Software-wise, you get a new burst shooting feature that'll snap up to 10fps, picking out and suggesting the best images from the sequence for you. Round the front, you get a 1.2MP Facetime camera that'll shoot 720p video.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy S4, meanwhile, packs a 13MP, f2.2 main camera. That means you'll get higher-resolution images than the iPhone, but with its 1.12μ pixels, its low light performance will likely struggle against the iPhone 5S camera. It'll also shoot 1080p video at 30fps – as will its 2MP front snapper.</p> <p>The S4's camera features include Eraser, which lets you paint out moving objects from the frame, Drama Shot, which captures 100 frames at 25fps and creates a composite image, Animated Photo, which lets you create eight-second GIF clips – and animate specific areas of a picture, and Best Photo and Best Face modes that pick out the best image from a burst shot for you.</p> <p>A conclusive verdict will have to wait on our full review of the iPhone 5S; the S4's camera wins out on a raw megapixel count and its array of (somewhat gimmicky) features, while Apple appears to have focused on real-world applications for its camera. Most smartphone images are shot in low-light environments, and its larger camera pixels and True Tone flash will likely give the iPhone 5S the edge in these situations.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S4" alt="Samsung Galaxy S4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-s4-review-camera-rear_0_0.jpg?1379574924" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="Apple iPhone 5S" alt="Apple iPhone 5S" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-5s-camera-lens_3.jpg?1379574924" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 7 vs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone hardware isn't the only thing that Apple's overhauled – its iOS software has been given a ground-up redesign for iOS 7, with bright, blocky colours replacing skeuomorphic icons and interfaces, and a pull-down settings menu that finally brings it up to speed with Android's multitasking. But Apple has packed some genuinely exciting – if as yet untested – technology into the iPhone 5S, in the form of its 64-bit processor and Touch ID sensor.&nbsp;</p> <p>If you're prepared to gamble on whether those features are actually useful, the iPhone is undoubtedly the more exciting option – plus it looks a hell of a lot better than the S4.</p> <p>The Galaxy S4, though, has the virtue of tried and tested technology – plus its removable battery and expandable storage make it by far the better option for day-to-day use. It’s teamed up with 2GB of RAM. That sounds like an awful lot of processing power.</p> <p>The only phone here that matches it on paper is the Sony Xperia Z1, which also packs the Snapdragon 800 at 2.2GHz and 2GB of RAM.</p> <p>The iPhone 5 has a proprietary dual-core 1.3GHz A6 chip and 1GB of RAM, and the HTC One rocks a quad-core Snapdragon 600 running at 1.7GHz and 2GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S4 also sports 2GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 600, but it’s clocked slightly higher than the One at 1.9GHz. All, on paper, lag behind the LG G2.</p> <p>In practice, the G2 wipes the floor with the above opposition (with the exception of the Xperia Z1, which we haven't tested yet but expect to run it very close). In our review, it garnered an AnTuTu benchmark score of almost 34,191, while the HTC One managed "only" 25,651. It uses IPS LCD tech and offers better brightness (if not sharpness) than the HTC One’s 4.7in 1920 x 1080 LCD. It also has wide viewing angles (not hugely important for a phone but nice all the same) and deep, inky blacks.</p> <p>The Samsung S4’s 5in Super AMOLED matches G2 for resolution, while the iPhone 5’s 4in LCD Retina display features 1136 x 640 pixels, putting it at the bottom of this particular pile.</p> <p>The Sony Xperia Z1's LCD offers the same 1920 x 1080 resolution in a 5in size, so it's slightly sharper than the G2. We have yet to test it out fully, so can't say with certainty which offers the better colour reproduction and contrast. Sony has crammed new picture-enhancing technologies (Triluminous Display and X-Reality) into the Z1, however, which may give it the edge.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy S4" alt="Samsung Galaxy S4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-s4.jpg?1378784537" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Build quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G2’s outer body is mostly constructed from plastic, but unlike the S4 doesn’t have a removeable backplate, so it’s less creaky than Samsung’s phone. The One in particular, with its beautifully machined, seamless unibody, feels like a phone apart in this group. The Sony Xperia Z1 is also a sleeker, more sophisticated-looking handset than the G2 and comes with the added bonus of waterproofing.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/htc-one.jpg?1378784537" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>LG has equipped the G2 with a 13MP camera and optical image stabilisation (OIS) to combat the blurriness that can occur when taking photos with unsteady hands. It’s the only phone here to offer OIS, but the feature is available on certain Nokia Lumia models (like the excellent&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review" target="_blank">1020</a>).</p> <p>The Sony Xperia Z1 features a 20.7MP sensor, while the Samsung Galaxy S4 comes with a 13MP sensor, the iPhone 5’s snapper offers 8MP and the HTC One musters 4MP. Of course, the One’s sensor has an “UltraPixel” design that cuts down the number of pixels in order to make each individual pixel larger and more effective in low light. So it’s not really helpful to merely compare megapixel counts when discussing which camera is best. There’s also the quality of the lens, colour reproduction and contrast to consider. The iPhone 5, for instance, is widely regarded as better for photos than the Galaxy S4 despite its smaller number of megapixels.</p> <p>In testing the G2's snapper proves as impressive as it looks on paper. It's particularly adept in low light, even with the flash turned off, delivering far sharper shots than the Samsung S4. The colours pop more too.</p> <p>The Xperia Z1 seems most likely to prove a formidable opponent when it comes to camera quality (although the G2 still holds the optical stabilisation card). We'll update this article once we've given it a proper review.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Sony Xperia Z1 camera" alt="Sony Xperia Z1 camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/xperia-z1-camera_0_0.jpg?1378783666" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G2 comes with a giant non-removeable 3,000mAh battery that combines snugly with the Snapdragon 800’s power-saving capabilities to deliver a lot of use: we got 19 hours of normal level use out of it before it dropped to five percent battery, which is pretty immense. You won't get similar longevity from the iPhone 5, HTC One or Galaxy S4.</p> <p>The iPhone 5 has a 1,440mAh battery, the HTC One 2,300mAh and the Samsung Galaxy S4 2,600mAh. The S4 is the only model here with a user-swappable battery, however, so you’re able to carry a spare around with you in case of power running low.</p> <p>What we are interested to see is how the Sony Z1 matches up. Although we've only had a quick go on the 1020 and have used the S4 for months, it's immediately obvious that Nokia’s 41MP snapper is in another league. Giant wall-sized prints of its shots were at the launch event, and even up close they were clear, well defined and richly coloured. As well as that whopping megapixel count, the Lumia's optical image stablisation and xenon flash should make for great low-light shots and steady video – while the ability to zoom out after you’ve taken a picture is a piece of astoundingly useful tech voodoo.</p> <p>It should be noted that as an Android phone, the Galaxy S4 does have Instagram – but with Windows Phone app Hipstamatic now able to upload pics to Instagram, the Lumia is on a pretty even footing for filter fans.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="nokia lumia 1020 camera" alt="nokia lumia 1020 camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia_lumia-1020_product_image.jpg?1374599846" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hardware </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sammy’s flagship Galaxy S4 is as a fast device with its 2GB RAM and mighty 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor. Taking into account the extra burden placed on the S4's battery by that bigger screen and processor, it looks like the 1020 stands a chance in this race. Plus the Lumia's optional camera grip case offers a futher 1000mAh battery to boost performance. But the 1020 does offer an extra grip case that makes taking photos easier and adds an extra 1000mAh battery and a tripod mount.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="nokia lumia 1020 grip" alt="nokia lumia 1020 grip" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/700-nokia-lumia-1020-with-camera-grip.jpg?1374599846" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Although Google Play still offers a vastly wider array of apps, the Lumia 1020's awesome camera skills and solid build should tempt plenty of the Android faithful to make the jump to Windows Phone.</p> <p>We'll be going in depth with the Nokia Lumia 1020 in our full review, so check back for our verdict.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="samsung-galaxy-s4-vs-nokia-lumia-1020 side" alt="samsung-galaxy-s4-vs-nokia-lumia-1020 side" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-lumia-1020-samsung-galaxy-s4_0.jpg?1374599846" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s4/nokia-lumia-1020-vs-samsung-galaxy-s4/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s4/nokia-lumia-1020-vs-samsung-galaxy-s4/feature#comments Galaxy S4 Lumia 1020 Nokia Samsung Smartphones Tue, 16 Jul 2013 15:52:17 +0000 Ian Paynton 1424905 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung Galaxy S4 http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Think HTC’s beautifully crafted One is untouchable? The Galaxy S4 may not have struck out from Samsung’s stubborn “Plastic 4 Life” design principles, but that doesn’t mean this is a carbon copy of the S3.</p> <p>The difference in the dimensions between the two handsets is barely noticeable, with the S4 actually arriving with a slimmer figure than its predecessor despite containing a bigger battery. In the hand the S3 and S4 do feel very similar, although we actually slightly prefer the S3’s curvier form for one-handed use. What’s really impressive is that Samsung has managed to squeeze a 5in screen onto the front of the S4 without increasing the girth, thanks to slimmer bezels that also provide a touch of <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-mini/review">iPad Mini</a>-style seriousness.</p> <p>We’re not going to lie, this is still a big phone. Plus, after months of fondling the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/sony-xperia-z/review">Sony Xperia Z</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/htc-one/review">HTC One</a>, it’s clear that it’s easier to forgive the occasional stretch of your thumb to reach an icon or a shuffle of the handset in two hands to type a message if the device you’re holding is a stylish slab of high design, which the Galaxy S4 unfortunately is not.</p> <p>The S4 is slim and light, yes, but with a creak or two when it flexes and raised areas on the back for the camera and speaker (unlike the uniformly smooth and flat HTC One) it’s still a slightly underwhelming first impression.</p> <p>Dig a little deeper, though, and there are nuggets to be uncovered. The front-facing camera lens is exceptionally small – as small as the each of the three sensors, in fact – and there’s an IR blaster built into the top edge alongside the headphone jack, which, like the power and volume buttons, retains the position it inhabited on the S3.</p> <p>That plastic rear may feel a little low tech, but it’s easily taken off to reveal a removable battery and microSD card slot that supports cards up to 64GB in capacity. This is the only 2013 flagship phone to offer these features (you can add 32GB to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/sony-xperia-z/review">Xperia Z</a> via microSD) and this will immediately appeal to power users who want to shove their entire HD movie library onto their smartphone and buy an extra battery for non-stop messaging, gaming and wireless internetting.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-htc-one_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-versus-galaxy-s3.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-S3-thin_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-IR-blaster.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen and sound – eye-widening Full HD </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A bigger screen, higher resolution and an upgrade to Gorilla Glass 3 is only what you’d expect from a modern-day flagship phone, but the S4’s Super AMOLED display bolsters the specs with extra smarts that includes Adapt Display, which automatically adjusts saturation as well as brightness as the ambient lighting conditions change.</p> <p>That’s not to say the specs don’t matter, mind you, and while the S4’s screen can’t quite match the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/htc-one/review">HTC One’s</a> 468ppi figure, that’s only because it has the same number of pixels stretched over a display that’s 0.3in bigger. There’s no denying it’s an eye-widening spectacle of a screen – the pixels look like they're sitting right on top of the glass.</p> <p>In fact, dial it up to full brightness and switch on the Dynamic setting and it’s almost retina-searing in its vibrancy. Unusually, we found ourselves settling on a brightness setting of less than half. That said, having all that punch available can be very useful when using the phone in bright sunlight.</p> <p>The increase to 1080p brings with it far sharper, cleaner text that makes the S3 look downright fuzzy by comparison. Contrast is excellent, too, although side-by-side with the HTC the S4 appears to have a slight blue tinge, with the One throwing up purer whites on webpages.</p> <p>We’d recommend familiarising yourself with the Screen Modes section in Settings, too, as left to its own devices the S4 can overcook skintones and leave your favourite Planet Earth episodes looking like they’ve been filmed on Pandora. The Standard, Professional Photo and Movie modes are all preferable to Dynamic. As for Adapt Display, it’s so subtle we saw no real difference whether it was turned on or off.</p> <p>In terms of the S4 pumping movies to your telly box, you’re amply provided for with the MHL 2.0 (mobile high-definition link) wired standard as well as being able to toggle screen mirroring and DLNA sharing to scan for compatible devices.</p> <p>The single speaker on the back goes much louder and actually sounds better than that of the average smartphone, but for serious listening headphones are really the only way to go. Plug some in (preferably not the ones in the box, as they’re not much cop) and the sound you get is smooth and open, although not quite as clear and punchy as the presentation from the HTC One.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-screen.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-web-browsing_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-S4-review-random-chameleon_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS – Android Jelly Bean and TouchWiz </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Samsung’s really gone to town here, absolutely packing its TouchWiz-skinned version of Jelly Bean with features, widgets and apps, not to mention gesture controls.</p> <p>Launching with Android 4.2.2 out of the box is a small coup for starters, especially considering the One hasn’t had the official update yet, but truth be told there aren’t many standout features of the latest incremental improvement.</p> <p>TouchWiz remains a little bloated compared to fuss-free stock Android, but Samsung’s done some really interesting things with the place since we last visited, and if you don’t like lively widgets like the S Travel TripAdvisor collaboration (although we’re rather partial), they can always be trashed.</p> <p>We think the good-looking WatchON EPG is well worth sticking to your homescreen. It asks you for viewing preferences and your TV provider (Sky, Virgin, etc) before pulling in info and images to match so you can surf your goggle box options without interrupting what you’re currently watching. With the IR blaster, you can hit the Watch on TV button and your S4 will tune your flatscreen to the required channel.</p> <p>With health tracking as popular as it now is it’s little surprise that Samsung is also pushing its own S Health suite. Pedometer apps are 10-a-penny on Google Play but none come close to this neat and addictive app’s sheer usability. There are various widgets to stick on your homescreens for encouragement, and once you dive in you’ll find a health board for calorie burning and consuming goals, food inputting tools, your step counting progress and a temperature and humidity graphic.</p> <p>The pedometer keeps running continuously once started, so no steps are wasted, and if you’re not keen on strapping the S4 to your arm for your evening jog you can pick up the S Band, which tracks miles clocked and calories burned. We haven’t been able to play with it yet but it seems a tidy solution if you commit to the S Health system.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-multi-window.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Air Gestures and Smart Screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So how about the Galaxy S4’s apparent pièces de résistance, the Air Gestures and Smart Screen controls? Do they usher in a revolutionary new era of touch-free gadget operation, or are they simply gimmicks? Perhaps it’s no surprise to find they’re a little bit of both.</p> <p>Take Air Gestures, which lets you scroll up and down pages and swipe between tabs by waving your hand over the screen. This could be really handy in the kitchen when your hands are covered in barbecue sauce, or when your touchscreen isn’t playing nice with your gloves, but in practice it’s only available in a handful of apps, it makes you look rather daft, and it’s a bit too hit-and-miss to be used for anything but those times that you really can’t touch your phone. That said, put in the practice and scrolling down web pages and through your galleries is satisfying when you’re not in a rush and reliable enough for geeky showing off sessions.</p> <p>Air View involves less flamboyant gestures so will inevitably get more use. Borrowed from the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-note-2/samsung-galaxy-note-2/review">Galaxy Note 2</a>, the sensor tracks your finger hovering over video timelines, emails and gallery folders and brings up small previews of the contents. It works 2cm to 3cm away in our experience (unlike wafting Gestures, which can be up to 7cm away) and if you turn on haptic feedback (and your imagination) it feels a little like you’ve got superpowers.</p> <p>Finally there’s Smart Screen, the eye-tracking tech that automatically scrolls down pages as you read and pauses videos if you look away. As with Air Gestures it’s a bit patchy in practice, but if you’re patient with Smart Scroll’s blinking eye animation, (almost) hands-free browsing, helped by tilting the S4 as you read and the S4 tracking your eyes, can be smooth and somewhat relaxing. Smart Pause, on the other hand, works only half the time – and don’t sit in front of a window the first time you show it to your mates because chances are it won’t work.</p> <p>Since most of these controls are only compatible with Samsung apps, their appeal is limited. But if you’re willing to put the time in to learn a new way of communicating with your device, you’ll be rewarded with a geekier, techier – although often slower – way of controlling the S4.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-s4-review-air-gestures-gallery_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-air-view%202.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> performance and battery life – Missing: an octo-core chip </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Like the majority of buyers, it’s the Qualcomm 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 version of the Galaxy S4 that we’ve been testing, rather than the octo-core Exynos beast that only a lucky few will be able to lay their hands on.</p> <p>The Snapdragon still has plenty of horsepower, of course, and as expected gaming, multi-tasking and browsing over 4G (with an EE Sim) is lightning quick, even with us piling apps in and out of its splitscreen Multi-Window feature to try to fluster it. Apps download quickly over Wi-Fi, too, and on a web browser quick draw, the S4 just pips the HTC One for loading times.</p> <p>But bizarrely we have encountered a fair amount of lag during testing. Simple things such as moving around homescreens, bringing up the SwiftKey-infused keyboard and opening and closing the Gallery app have caused a touch of unsightly stutter.</p> <p>We’re told by Samsung that an imminent software update will iron out some of those kinks and we’ll update this review when it’s been loaded onto our review unit. We’d expect this to give TouchWiz the pep talk it needs to run as slippery smooth as Team Stuff gliding down a Slip’N’Slide, but we’ll have to wait to be sure.</p> <p>As we’re sure many Stuff readers will know, being an all-singing, all-dancing supernova requires oodles of energy, and with a 2600mAh battery that’s 25 per cent bigger than the S3's we were excited to see if the S4 could match its predecessor’s stamina.</p> <p>In reality it doesn’t quite manage it, though. While the Galaxy S4 will last you the day on a single charge, that 5in screen sucks power like an out-of-control Dyson sucks up loose change. On a video rundown test, it drained just as much juice at half brightness with Wi-Fi turned on as the HTC One. Considering that the HTC needs nightly charges and we’ve seen the low battery alert many times during our first few days with the S4, we’d wager that power users will have to find brightness or push notification compromises.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-flipboard_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-s4-review-my-video_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Benchmarks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The S4 destroys its nearest rivals in the usual benchmarks: on Geekbench 2 it scores a whopping 3236 (versus the HTC One’s 2678) and on AnTuTu, its 24,280 score is some way ahead of the Xperia Z’s 20,582. It lets you take a snap with the front-facing 2MP camera at the same time as the 13MP rear snapper takes the main image before popping your face into the scene. A gimmick, sure, but as smartphone cameras creep up in quality and versatility, there’s no harm in having some tricks to try out in the first hour with a new handset. Its counterpart, Dual Video, means you can do the same for video calls – tons more useful and still fun.</p> <p>This dual camera trickery works well, but the same can’t be said for all of the S4 camera’s playful new modes – some borrowed from the Galaxy Camera. Eraser Shot struggled a few times to pick out moving people, so we were left disappointed that we couldn’t get rid of accidental photobombers.&nbsp;</p> <p>Away from the headline features, the S4’s camera is right up there with the best for accurate colours and incredible detail – at least by smartphone cam standards. It’s also seriously quick, like the S3, so much so that you might not realise you’ve already taken the photo.</p> <p>You can choose from 4:3 13MP or 9MP 16:9 images (among others), although the options are buried in the settings menu at the top right of the redesigned camera interface, where you’ll also find burst mode, face detection, voice control and more.</p> <p>While colours captured by the S4 are on the more natural side of the palette, rival cameras such as the HTC can take images with higher levels of contrast, giving colours added oomph. The S4 is also neck-and-neck with the best low-light shooters – whereas the HTC One’s camera picks out more in the dark, it often results in noisy images and the Samsung’s own impressive low-light mode can make for more useful snaps.&nbsp;</p> <p>Video – of the 1080p variety, of course – is reliably silky from both cameras, but as with stills, as soon as you start zooming around things do get wobbly. Cranking it up to 4x zoom is a definite no-no if you don’t want a bout of sea sickness while you watch your footage back.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-s4-review-camera-rear_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="675" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-galaxy-S4-camera-modes_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy S4 isn’t just a phone, it’s a device that wants to track and train you into becoming a Gadgeteer 2.0. Your eyes, your steps, your surroundings, your swipes: it seems that the S4 is always ready and panting at you to turn on features, stick yourself in photos and finesse the right Air Gestures.</p> <p>And the more you dive into it (and stay patient with the first-generation of this ambitious tech) the more rewarding the S4 becomes. Seriously, at times you’ll wish you could high five your phone, although at others you’ll find yourself taking the easy route and prodding the screen rather than taking the time to consider whether you’ve already got the Air features turned on and whether they’re compatible with the app you’re running.</p> <p>Let’s remember that these are all extras that you can completely ignore if you want, and if you do the S4 still ticks just about all of the boxes. This is the successor to one of the most popular phones of all time and it’s smarter, faster and sharper-screened. Add the microSD expansion and it’s doing everything the most discerning Android fan could desire.</p> <p>The fly in the S4 ointment is the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/htc-one/review">HTC One</a>. To us, the all-aluminium design is sleeker, sexier and more sophisticated, and while it sacrifices 0.3in to the Samsung’s 5in screen, the HTC’s display has greater contrast and more accurate colours.</p> <p>We’re also keen on HTC’s understated Sense UI, which offers a less-intrusive, smoother and zippier user experience than the Galaxy’s TouchWiz. We know that Samsung is pushing out firmware updates in the coming days and if those cure the S4’s occasional operational hiccups we’ll revise the review accordingly, but for the time being at least, Samsung will have to make do with second place in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/smartphones/top-ten">Smartphones Top 10</a>. Be under no illusion, though, the Galaxy S4 is still a fantastic device, and one with tech that paves the way for all future phones.</p> <p>Review by <a href="https://plus.google.com/100316166955509219073#100316166955509219073/posts"><strong>Sophie Charara&nbsp;</strong></a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-smart-scroll-eye_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Big, smart and sensor-packed, the Galaxy S4 is an eye-widening slab of future tech</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-legacy-url"> <div class="field-label">Legacy URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> /review/samsung-galaxy-s4 </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-carousel-image"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item big image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_carousel_image" width="920" height="340" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/carousel-images/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-homescreen.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-carousel-image-small"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item small image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_carousel_image_small" width="450" height="340" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-S4-review-homescreen_0.jpg?1391707853" /> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review#comments Android Galaxy S4 Samsung Smartphones Wed, 24 Apr 2013 05:39:14 +0000 Ian Paynton 1424885 at http://www.stuff.tv
