Got that shiny new Nokia Lumia smartphone? Good, we figured you bought a Windows Phone device because of the apps.
Pay no heed to those of little faith in Windows Phone who say you can get the same apps on Google Android or Apple iOS. Fact: Windows Phone has some really powerful apps, some of which are so exclusive, you’ll need to be one of the cool Windows Phone kids to own it.
Problem is, you’re not going to sift through over 240,000 apps in the Windows Phone Store, which is still growing with over 500 apps added daily.
Nope, we’ve got that covered. Here’s our recommended list of Nokia and Windows Phone exclusive apps that you need to download right now.
Let’s start with the most essential entry in our selection - an app to find other apps. But this is not your run-of-the-mill app aggregator. If the name isn’t a dead giveaway, let’s state the obvious - it’s a social platform for apps. That means you get to tell everyone what’s your favourite apps, or track fellow Windows Phone users and read their take on their most-used Windows Phone app.
Download App Social on Windows Phone Store or search for App Social via Store on your Nokia Lumia device.
There are no directionally challenged drivers in this world. Just those that refuse to rely on GPS. Put your pride aside, because if you haven’t been using Nokia’s HERE Drive+, you’re missing out on the best voice-guided navigation system. It has an extensive list of maps, which by the way, are free and downloadable to your Windows Phone device. It’s also smart and nice enough to plan routes that avoid those nasty ERP and warn you when you’re entering a speed limit zone.
HERE+ Drive is exclusive to Nokia Lumia devices.
Like HERE Drive+, you have tons of maps to download on HERE Maps, and they’re free too. You’ll also get walking, public transport and driving directions to your destination. But what you might not know is that HERE Maps also has a list of nearby places of interest for you to check out. It comes with indoor maps, so you can plan your route in shopping centres such as Takashimaya and dodge those expensive shops before the missus spots them. It also has augmented reality… okay, you seem lost. It means you can use the LiveSight feature, point the camera at a building and it’ll show you the best food and shopping recommendations.
Download HERE Maps on Windows Phone Store or search for HERE Maps on your Nokia Lumia device.
That Nokia Lumia phone you’re holding, supports blazing fast 4G connection speed (which you won’t be paying for now). But the downside is, your data limit is now capped at 2GB. Have you met Nokia Xpress? No, not that Xpress line of smartphones. It’s a web browser that compresses data usage so you won’t bust your data cap. The app tracks how much data you’ve saved, and lets you add popular sites as a magazine.
Download Nokia Xpress on Windows Phone Store or search for Nokia Xpress on your Nokia Lumia device.
Let the music flow, and be entertained by the extensive collection available on Nokia MixRadio. The music streaming service is free, as long as you have an Internet connection. Not on Wi-Fi or you’ve hit your data limit? Here’s the good news, you can download a mix, say the US Billboard hot hits, to your phone. The mix will refresh every 20 days once you’re connected via Wi-Fi. Oh, did we mention that you don’t need to fork out a single cent to download an offline mix? But if you want to be in control, you can buy the albums of your favourite bands once you’ve sampled their music on MixRadio.
Download Nokia MixRadio on Windows Phone Store or search for Nokia MixRadio on your Nokia Lumia device.
Ah, GIF files. Those animated images have given us quite a few good laughs with its ridiculous animations. Apparently, it doesn’t take much to do that with a Nokia Lumia phone, thanks to Nokia Cinemagraph. The photo-editing app captures a series of photos, capturing movements during those shots. Get creative, make some video magic and get your friends together for some stop-motion animation fun. This is your chance to showcase your creative side.
Download Nokia Cinemagraph on Windows Phone Store or search for Nokia Cinemagraph on your Nokia Lumia device.
More after the break...
Nokia Creative Studio
All that talk about refocusing your photos after you’ve taken them and adding filters? Pfft, been there, done that for Nokia. Better yet, the Nokia Creative Studio gathers these amazing photo-editing features into one app. Be artistic and make something stand out with a single colour using Color Pop. Create that special bokeh effect, blur out the background and leave that outstanding subject in focus. You don’t even need two cameras to do that.
Download Nokia Creative Studio on Windows Phone Store or search for Nokia Creative Studio on your Nokia Lumia device.
You don’t need HDMI cables or some fancy-schmancy wireless streaming standard to share your presentation to your boss. You have Nokia Beamer for that, and it’s so easy, you won’t believe it. No really, let us tell you a secret - just click on the shared link, and you’ll see anything that’s shown on the Lumia phone. Simply shake the phone, and you’ll update the shared screenshot.
Download Nokia Beamer on Windows Phone Store or search for Nokia Beamer on your Nokia Lumia device.
Is that a scanner in your pocket, or are you happy to see us? No? Then that must be Office Lens, which is really a scanner app that saves pictures and uploads them to your OneNote account. Wait, so how does the app help you find notes within a picture? The good news is, Office Lens uses optical character recognition to recognise text, enabling you to search for specific words. That means you can search for the word ‘budget’, rattle off numbers for the year and impress your boss in record time.
Download Office Lens on Windows Phone Store or search for Office Lens on your Nokia Lumia device.
Last we heard, you don’t need a wireless presenter to control your PowerPoint slides. And since you have a Nokia Lumia smartphone (you DO have one, right?), get the free Office Remote to work that wireless presentation magic. You can view your speaker notes on the phone, rather than be tethered to the laptop throughout the presentation. Bonus: you get a laser pointer for your slides. It only works within your PowerPoint slides, so don’t think about using it to mess with your cat.
Download Office Remote on Windows Phone Store or search for Office Remote on your Nokia Lumia device.
