Its Safety Check is a special tool created for times of crisis and emergencies, such as natural disasters. In some cases, Facebook is the easiest tool to let people know how they&rsquo;re doing in the middle of a calamity. That is, assuming they get access to the Internet. But with many major telcos supporting posting to Facebook&nbsp; via text messages, Safety Check could be a very helpful aid to keep loved ones in the loop.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Some peace of mind </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>According to its latest announcement, Facebook called its Safety Check a &ldquo;simple and easy way to say you&rsquo;re safe and check on others.&rdquo;<br />It promises to:</p> <ul> <li>Let friends and family know you&rsquo;re safe</li> <li>Check on others in the affected area</li> <li>Mark your friends as safe</li> </ul> <p>In case you have privacy concerns or aren&rsquo;t keen on letting nosy reporters use your Facebook status when reporting, it will keep your content viewable to Facebook-friends only.</p> <p>Japan being no stranger to disasters, it was no surprise that Facebook&rsquo;s Japan engineers were the ones who took the first step towards Safety Check&rsquo;s existence by building a Disaster Message Board to enable communication with others. A year later, they then launched a test of the tool which then got overwhelming response.</p> <p>Facebook also learned from how people would use Facebook during disasters and then tweaked the Disaster Message Board in the light of all they learned. Safety Check will soon be made available on Android, IOS, feature phones and of course the PC.</p> <p>How does it work? First you need to activate it after a disaster and should you be in the affected area, Facebook will ask you via a notification if you are all right.</p> <p>Facebook will (almost creepily) determine your location from the following: your last location if you opted into the Nearby Friends feature, the city listed on your profile and the city you are currently using the Internet in.</p> <p>Should Facebook get your location wrong, you can indicate that you&rsquo;re outside the disaster zone. You can also select the &ldquo;I&rsquo;m Safe&rdquo; option and Facebook will then generate a News Feed story as well as a notification. Your friends will also be able to mark you as safe.</p> <p>The tool will also let you know how your friends are, with Facebook sending you a notification about friends who have marked themselves as safe.</p> <p>&ldquo;We hope it&rsquo;s a tool that helps you stay connected to those you care about, and gives you the comfort of knowing your loved ones are safe,&rdquo; said Facebook&rsquo;s statement. For many people, their hope is that they never have to use it.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/platforms/twitter">So, what is going on with Twitter?</a></p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://newsroom.fb.com/news/2014/10/introducing-safety-check/" target="_blank">Facebook</a>]</p> <p><iframe id="buffer_tpc_check" src="https://d3ijcis4e2ziok.cloudfront.net/tpc-check.html"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Facebook lets your loved ones know you’re OK" alt="Facebook lets your loved ones know you’re OK" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/safety%20check%2001.jpg?1413447018" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/facebook/facebook-lets-your-loved-ones-know-you-re-ok/news#comments Apps and Games Facebook Thu, 16 Oct 2014 08:05:21 +0000 Erna Mahyuni 1450441 at http://www.stuff.tv Fully Charged: iOS 8 adoption slowing, Facebook planning anonymous access app, and the Batcave explorable in VR http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/fully-charged-ios-8-adoption-slowing-facebook-planning-anonymous-access-app-and-explore-batcav <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Begin your day happily informed thanks to our morning tech news roundup </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS 8" alt="iOS 8" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/apple-ios8-alt_0.png?1412819517" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 8 adoption now creeping along </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What&rsquo;s the effect of releasing an OS update that <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/ios-801-released-then-pulled-breaking-iphone-6-cell-service-and-touch-id/news">effectively disables</a> your new phone&#39;s ability to act like&hellip; well, a phone? In the case of Apple and iOS 8, it&rsquo;s that those users who hadn&rsquo;t updated yet are widely resisting the move.</p> <p>Within the first few days of release, Apple&rsquo;s stats showed that 46% of active iOS device owners had upgraded to iOS 8 - an especially impressive number, given that the iPhone 4 was lopped off of the compatibility list for this version.</p> <p>But following the debacle with the broken iOS 8.0.1 release, that number has only increased 1% in the weeks since. And weirdly, the percentage of users running a version prior to iOS 7 grew as well (from 5% to 6%). Apparently it&#39;s gaining the most traction among the LGBTQ community who are reacting to Facebook&#39;s new naming policy.</p> <p>Ello could also likely appeal to those bothered by Facebook&#39;s insidious advertising algorithim that tailors what it shows you by monitoring your likes and how it effectively censors your newsfeed by not showing you all your friends&#39; posts.</p> <p>As to how it looks, the minimalist approach to Ello&#39;s design puts it somewhere between Twitter and Tumblr. A lot less cluttered, assuredly, but also with a minimal featureset.</p> <p>But for all its bravado, the underlying question is how will Ello sustain itself without any form of advertising? Is the site sustainable? Or will its stripped-down appeal become a bane instead of a boon?</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/platforms/facebook">What is up with the king of social networks, anyway?</a></p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://betabeat.com/2014/03/mysterious-new-social-network-ello-promises-you-are-not-the-product/">Betabeat</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Is new social network Ello a threat to Facebook or short-lived fad?" alt="Is new social network Ello a threat to Facebook or short-lived fad?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ello_02.jpg?1411711751" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/facebook/new-social-network-ello-threat-facebook-or-short-lived-fad/news#comments Facebook Fri, 26 Sep 2014 06:09:12 +0000 Erna Mahyuni 1448617 at http://www.stuff.tv Your Facebook post will self-destruct in 5, 4, 3, 2.... http://www.stuff.tv/sg/facebook/you-could-soon-see-self-destructing-posts-facebook/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The social network giant is working on a feature that will wipe the slate clean of your drunken indiscretions </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="567" height="425" title="You could soon see self-destructing posts on Facebook" alt="You could soon see self-destructing posts on Facebook" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/fb_0.jpeg?1410479668" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>The Internet never forgets&nbsp;&ndash; Well, when a video opens, a carousel of related videos pops up at the bottom. Clicking on a video will play it in the video window and you can keep clicking on the videos and they will then be displayed from within the player. Easy and intuitively designed enough for most mobile users.</p> <p>The Facebook app on iOS and Android already support both photo and video uploads which is already a step towards encouraging more Facebook users to upload and share videos to the site. But to be honest, uploading to YouTube whether via desktop or mobile is a far easier experience than on Facebook.</p> <p>Facebook&#39;s video uploader also does not include fun features like filters or other tweaks, in contrast with what other services like Vine and Snapchat offer. It&#39;s not enough to make uploading video easy as pretty much all the major apps already do that but it&#39;s also about making the process more fun and allowing for creativity.</p> <p>Currently with users already being able to just link videos on Facebook which can then be played on mobile, not to mention the wealth of content already available on YouTube, pushing for more video on Facebook is a tougher sell.</p> <p>In other news, if you prefer sharing video one-to-one, then <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/facebook/facebook-s-slingshot-app-lets-you-trade-one-photo-or-video-another/news">try Facebook&#39;s Slingshot app on for size</a>.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/07/facebook-mobile-video/" target="_blank">Techcrunch</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Facebook aping YouTube with &#039;related videos&#039; feature" alt="Facebook aping YouTube with &#039;related videos&#039; feature" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/FB%20video%20player.jpg?1404791845" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/facebook/facebook-aping-youtube-related-videos-feature/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/facebook/facebook-aping-youtube-related-videos-feature/news#comments Facebook YouTube Tue, 08 Jul 2014 03:57:26 +0000 Erna Mahyuni 1441344 at http://www.stuff.tv Fully Charged: Facebook apologises for emotional manipulation, Eliss Infinity hits Android, and KORG’s Nintendo 3DS synth http://www.stuff.tv/sg/3ds/fully-charged-facebook-apologizes-emotional-manipulation-eliss-infinity-hits-android-and-korg-s- <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Start Monday right by catching up with the weekend’s most interesting tech tidbits </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Facebook" alt="Facebook" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/facebook-main.jpg?1404132524" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Facebook sorry for News Feed psychological experiment </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Word broke over the weekend that back in 2012, Facebook intentionally manipulated the News Feeds of some 689,000 users, showing fewer positively-toned posts for half and fewer negative posts for the other&mdash;all in an effort to see how what users saw affected how they in turn posted their own content.</p> <p>Many of us have welcomed Facebook into our lives as a crucial part of our daily routines and a way to keep tabs on our various social groups&mdash;so when it became known that some of us may have been unwittingly looped into a psychological experiment, the general reaction was rather negative.
