Kicking off with a scene set aboard a submarine, you can hear whistling steam from cracked pipes that shifts position as you turn your head. Another demo features a dinosaur growling and glowering at you; move in close and crane your head, and you can hear its breathing. A woodland scene with stylised, polygonal animals features rustling leaves and twittering birds that fly around your head, while another scenario presents you with a friendly alien that burbles at you as you approach; in the background, its spaceship can be heard humming away to itself.</p> <p>Throughout the demo, what impresses most is how natural it all seems; the soundscape shifts around you as you move your head, and even small movements let you register changes in pitch and Doppler shifts, adding to the sense of scale and immersion. Particularly impressive is a sequence featuring a tiny living model of a city; firefighters tackle a blaze while cars and helicopters flit about. Lean in close, and you can precisely identify the location of different sounds, from crackling fires to whirring rotor blades.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/facebook/ces-2015/ces-2015-interview-palmer-luckey-founder-oculus-vr/feature" target="_blank">CES 2015: An interview with Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus VR</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Oculus Rift Crescent Bay prototype" alt="The Oculus Rift Crescent Bay prototype" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/oculus-rift-crescent-bay-01.jpg?1420879018" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="A scene from one of Oculus&#039; HRTF demos" alt="A scene from one of Oculus&#039; HRTF demos" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audiobots-blog.jpg?1420879018" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The visual spectacle is impressive, too; though there&#39;s still a visible pixel grid in the display, it&#39;s much finer than that of the early prototype Rift devices &ndash; and the wide field of view plunges you into the action and helps to create a sense of scale. A sequence in which you perch atop a skyscraper like Batman induces wobbly-kneed feelings of vertigo, while a Jurassic Park-style scene in which you&#39;re menaced by a massive T-Rex produces an atavistic fight-or-flight response. We can only imagine the fun that game developers are going to have, giving us the screaming heebie-jeebies.</p> <p>The demo reel culminates in Epic Games&#39; Unreal-powered Showdown &ndash; an action sequence that gives you an idea of the device&#39;s gaming potential. You&#39;re plunged into the midst of a pitched battle between soldiers and a giant robot on a city street; shards of glass and shrapnel fly past in slow motion, and as you peer in close you can see the reflections of explosions in the puddles on the ground. Gunfire and explosion sounds are placed precicely in the 3D space, and we can certainly see how the HRTF technology will give FPS players an edge in combat.</p> <p>If there&#39;s one problem with the Crescent Bay prototype, it&#39;s that the headphones feel a little flimsy, like the complimentary on-ears you get on an aeroplane. We&#39;d like to see a more substantial set of cans, perhaps with noise isolation, in the final product; and a slightly higher-resolution display wouldn&#39;t go amiss too.</p> <p>Despite those caveats, the Rift is undoubtedly impressive; frankly, they could release it in its current state, but founder <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/facebook/ces-2015/ces-2015-interview-palmer-luckey-founder-oculus-vr/feature" target="_blank">Palmer Luckey clearly feels</a> there&#39;s more work to do on it. &nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/ces-2015/ces-2015-what-expect-best-gadgets-and-tech/feature" target="_blank">All the latest news from CES 2015</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="683" title="Epic Games&#039; Showdown demo" alt="Epic Games&#039; Showdown demo" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/epic-games-showdown.jpg?1420879018" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Oculus VR&#039;s Crescent Bay prototype" alt="Oculus VR&#039;s Crescent Bay prototype" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/oculus-rift-crescent-bay-02.jpg?1420879018" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/oculus/ces-2015/ces-2015-hands-new-hrtf-equipped-oculus-rift/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/oculus/ces-2015/ces-2015-hands-new-hrtf-equipped-oculus-rift/news#comments CES 2015 Gaming Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Fri, 09 Jan 2015 18:33:16 +0000 Elissa Loi 1457218 at http://www.stuff.tv CES 2015: Oculus Rift adds improved HRTF audio technology http://www.stuff.tv/sg/oculus/ces-2015/ces-2015-oculus-rift-adds-improved-hrtf-audio-technology/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Head-Related Transfer Function will increase immersion by intelligently locating sounds </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="604" height="453" title="CES 2015: Oculus Rift adds improved HRTF audio technology" alt="CES 2015: Oculus Rift adds improved HRTF audio technology" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/oculus-crescent-front_0.jpg?1420683628" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Oculus VR is showing off the latest edition of its Oculus Rift headset at CES, and there&rsquo;s one striking addition to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/oculus/new-oculus-rift-crescent-bay-prototype-headset-revealed-built-audio/news">Crescent Bay prototype</a> since we last saw it: more immersive sound.</p> <p>The audio boost comes courtesy of a technology called Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF), which adds true 3D spatialisation to the headset. As Lucky moved, the camera automatically followed him around, occasionally zooming in to help navigate tricky walkways.</p> <p>I also found myself naturally peering in closer to objects like flowers and mushrooms to get a better look at them; made possible by the same head-tracking LED lights from the Crystal Cove iteration, although on the DK2 they&#39;re hidden from view.&nbsp;</p> <p>A camera tracks these LEDs, which allows your head to be tracked in 3D space, letting you peer around objects and adding an impressive layer of immersion.</p> <p>After guiding Lucky to the end of the level, I had to throw some bombs at a few targets. Aiming was taken care of with my head. I simply looked where I wanted to aim, and pressed the trigger. Simple.</p> <p>By this point I know I&#39;ll be snapping up a Rift on launch day, and it occured to me that I didn&#39;t feel sick.</p> <p>Many users of past iterations of the Rift have complained about motion sickness, but the DK2 has a higher framerate, reducing motion blur which Oculus tells us all but eradicates motion sickness.</p> <p>I tend to deal with motion in games quite well anyway (Mirror&#39;s Edge on a projector didn&#39;t phase me), so it&#39;s hard for me to say if my lack of discomfort was down to the increased frame rate or not.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="600" height="449" title="Under the hood" alt="Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2: eyes-on preview at Gamescom 2014" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Untitled-4_1.jpg?1408457887" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="600" height="451" title="Bombs away" alt="Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2: eyes-on preview at Gamescom 2014" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Untitled-2_3.jpg?1408457887" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SuperHot </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="300" scrolling="no" src="http://gfycat.com/ifr/MessyWateryHare" width="620"></iframe></p> <p>You might already be familiar with this successful Kickstarter title, an FPS that pits you agains hordes of low-poly red goons; the catch is that time moves only when you do, with bullets leaving Matrix-style trails in the air as you weave among them.</p> <p>I&#39;d played the free online demo about 50 times before in the past, but the Rift made it even better.</p> <p>It began by peeking around a corner at a group of enemies at the other end of a corridor. Rounding a corner, the window to my right shattered, showering me with glass and putting me right in the path of a line of bullets.&nbsp;</p> <p>I instinctively ducked as I moved forward, and this simple reflex saved my virtual life, sending the bullets harmlessly above my head.&nbsp;</p> <p>As I made my way closer to the enemies, they fired off multiple shots each. Frankly, we can&rsquo;t imagine hearing a voice other than Nolan North&rsquo;s coming out of a Drake, but the video game voice actor doesn&rsquo;t have the big-name star quality a movie studio probably seeks. Here&#39;s what&#39;s really tickled our retinas thus far.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SuperHOT </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You can play the demo version of SuperHOT now at superhotgame.com, and we recommend you do: it&rsquo;s an interesting and very stylish take on first-person shooters. What sets SuperHOT apart from the crowd is time: it moves only when you move. Run towards your enemies and they&rsquo;ll be able to shoot you without much trouble, but stand still and bullets travel through the air like coins falling through treacle. You don&rsquo;t get much in the way of weaponry in SuperHOT, but manage the time dilation right and you can weave through a hail of gunfire to despatch them.</p> <p>What Oculus brings to this, apart from a far more immersive first-person experience, is a finer level of control. You can physically lean to one side to avoid bullets in a way that isn&rsquo;t possible with a flat display. This makes bullet-avoidance more intuitive and more economical: because you&rsquo;re immersed in VR, you have much better depth perception and you only move as much as you need to avoid being shot in the face, before turning and watching with great satisfaction as the bullet flies ponderously over your shoulder.</p> <p>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/oculus/ces-2014/face-review-oculus-rift-crystal-cove-bona-fide-vr-revolution/feature">Face-on with the Oculus Crystal Cove prototype</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SUPERHOT_2.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SUPERHOT_6.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Lucky’s Tale </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We hadn&rsquo;t really thought about Oculus Rift as something you could use to play platform games, or really any game that doesn&rsquo;t use a first-person view, but this charming little jumpabout shows virtual reality can be a lot more versatile. It does feel weird for a minute or two as your brain adjusts to this new form of perception, but it soon becomes natural. Looking around also becomes a highly intuitive means of controlling the game: there are a few points when you have to take aim at something, and you do so by looking, without the game needing to tell you.</p> <p>One of the things we were most impressed by in <em>Lucky&rsquo;s Tale</em> was the main menu, a <em>Super Mario World</em>-esque map that you zoom in on just by leaning in towards it and peering around like a curious giant. It made us think about the possibilities for strategy games and even board games in virtual reality. But while lengthy tank battles will remain the preserve of flatscreen players, we took one of War Thunder&rsquo;s fighter planes for a spin in Oculus and it was enormous fun.</p> <p>Flying games (and racing games) are perfect for VR, because they&rsquo;re about moving around while sitting still, and that&rsquo;s also exactly what you&rsquo;re doing in VR. You remain seated, holding controls just in front of you, but you get a great impression of movement. In the WW2 fighter&rsquo;s cockpit the Rift makes things easier, mainly because you can look out of the window. Positioning your plane in the right spot to swoop down on your enemies is one of the trickier parts of flying games, and it&rsquo;s a lot easier to pinpoint ground targets when you can just lean over and have a look. In a dogfight situation, too, it&rsquo;s handy to be able to fly while looking over your shoulder. The one upgrade it really needs is hand tracking: on the demo we played, we had to reach blindly for the flight stick and the throttle, so some virtual hands to use the virtual controls would make things a lot more convincing.</p> <p>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/oculus/oculus-rift-will-give-viewers-vr-look-david-attenborough-s-next-series/news">David Attenborough&#39;s next series will have scenes shot for Oculus Rift</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/USSR_March7th_5.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1595" height="923" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/USSR_March7th_6.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Eve: Valkyrie </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One of the first games to really show what this new generation of virtual reality was capable of, Valkyrie&rsquo;s intergalactic dog-fighting is simple but effective, a bit like the X-Wing games of the &lsquo;90s. Now you too can take in the action, as 2K Games has posted a 14-minute narrated walkthrough just like the one seen at E3.</p> <p>And while only currently announced for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, don&rsquo;t be surprised if it makes a new-gen console appearance as well. 2K Australia&rsquo;s Tony Lawrence tells gamereactorTV that they&rsquo;ll consider bumping it up to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but that the game will only launch on older consoles and PC this autumn. Seeing as Borderlands 2 is 2K&rsquo;s best-selling game ever, don&rsquo;t be surprised to see that new-gen port come spring.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DpJNBEEloI&amp;feature=youtu.be">YouTube</a>; <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_VHvfdpuQw">gamereactorTV</a> via <a href="http://metro.co.uk/2014/07/07/borderlands-the-pre-sequel-could-come-to-next-gen-admits-gearbox-4790037/">Metro</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/borderlands-2/review">Borderlands 2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5DpJNBEEloI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tour the world’s largest cruise ship with Google Maps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Seeking a quick glance at utter decadence, whether it&rsquo;s to revel in or rage at?
