Xbox One’s huge August update is now available

3D Blu-ray support and low battery notification are among the additions in Microsoft’s biggest update yet

Microsoft has announced that its August update for the Xbox One, the console’s biggest yet, is now rolling out.

The update brings with it a number of improvements, most notably support for 3D Blu-ray movies – something the Sony PS4 offers already – and the ability to purchase games and DLC remotely. The latter means you can buy something while you’re at work (through the Xbox website or the SmartGlass app) and have it ready to play on the console by the time you walk in your door later that evening.

There’s also low battery notification for controllers (no more surprise dead gamepads to spoil your FIFA 14 session), as well as the ability to disable all notifications while videos are playing.

Meanwhile, the activity feed has been overhauled, with the interface becoming a single column that’s longer and features more content. You’ll now be able to add text to your feed, to “like” and comment on items from your friends, and to post game clips either publicly or privately via messages. It’s become a lot more like Twitter, essentially.

The update will be downloaded automatically, and these things often take a day or two to arrive on everyone’s machine, so don’t be alarmed if your Xbox One hasn’t updated itself already.
