An Xbox One.5? Sorry, but it’s not going to happen

Seems Xbox fans won’t be getting a PS 4.5-style 4K upgrade anytime soon

Eagerly anticipating the arrival of new 4K skills and an improved GPU on the Xbox One? Then you’re in for a long wait.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has crushed rumours about an impending ‘0.5′ upgrade to the world’s second favourite games console, telling GameInformer that it’s simply not on his radar.

“I’m not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we’re going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers,” Spencer said. “I don’t know anything about any of the rumors that are out there, but I can understand other teams’ motivations to do that.”

His comments follow the rumours that, just three years into the current video game generation, Sony is working on an upgraded PlayStation 4, to be called the PlayStation 4.5.

While Spencer didn’t rule out an upgraded version of the Xbox One, he did say that he’s happy with the current console’s performance and that he wants the next iteration to be a “really substantial change for people.”

With more details of the Nintendo NX expected this year and the PlayStation 4K rumours gathering pace, Microsoft may be taking a risk by not having any plans for significant new hardware.

It effectively means that Xbox One users won’t be playing Halo 5 or Quantum Break in 4K resolution anytime soon – unless they switch to PC.

On the plus side, that does mean that Xbox players won’t be forced to deplete their wallets again so soon into the current console generation. And with Oculus Rift, HTC Rive and PlayStation VR all also out this year, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
