The OnePlus 2 will have a better fingerprint sensor than the iPhone

At least that's what OnePlus is saying - the phone's reveal remains a month away

Touch ID on the iPhone 5s introduced the world to mobile fingerprint sensors, and whatever issues the first model had were mostly ironed out with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. But OnePlus says it can do better.

The OnePlus 2 is on the horizon, seemingly ready to deliver another flagship-level smartphone at a budget price, and it sounds like some stellar upgrades are planned. In a post on its official forums, the company slams previous sensors, saying they were “tacked on to a phone just to hop on the ‘me too’ bandwagon. A selling point, not a useful feature.” Burn!

“With the OnePlus 2, the fingerprint sensor is done right. It’s refined and lightning quick, unlocking your device faster than TouchID,” reads the post. “One quick tap takes you right to your homescreen. With the ability to store up to five fingerprint profiles, it’s fast, it’s safe, and it’s secure.”

Admittedly, that all sounds pretty identical to what we’ve seen with the iPhone 6 and Samsung’s Galaxy S6: fast, accurate sensors that are reliable and could save you a few moments of fumbling through keycode entries. There’s always room for improvement as far as accuracy, but how much time can the OnePlus 2 really cut compared to what’s already on the market? It seems a bit like marketing bluster for now.

We should find out in about a month. Late last week, OnePlus announced a virtual reality reveal event streaming on 27 July at 7pm Pacific time (which works out to 28 July at 3am UK time), which will showcase the phone in its full glory – although for now the company seems intent on a slow-drip feeding of small, but intriguing details.

We also know that the handset will have a USB Type-C port, run on a revised version of the Snapdragon 810 that’s less prone to overheating, and – unfortunately – use the same invite system as the original OnePlus One. And if they prove real, the purported leaked photos that popped up yesterday may provide the best look yet at what else to expect.
