Everyone’s got one of each: an EZ-Link card and a smartphone. Starting from today, they’ll work together to make your life even easier with My EZ-Link Mobile, a mobile payment app that lets you top up your EZ-Link card by tapping it on your smartphone.
To join this revolutionary payment system, your phone must be equipped with near field communication (NFC) and included in the list of approved devices. The top-up system might sound daunting, but it's actually pretty easy.
All you have to do is download the free app, follow the one-time account sign up instructions, and tap the EZ-Link card to your NFC-enabled phone to refill its value via your credit or debit card. Payment information is retained (and secured) for the convenience of your next top up.
Each account can manage up to 10 cards, and supports various EZ-Link cards, including the Citibank SMRT Platinum Visa Card, M1 Prepaid MasterCard, POSB Everyday card and more.
Android-wielding kids can also download the app, enter their parents' credit card details onto the app, and top up their EZ-Link cards on their own. Don't worry, each top-up is limited to S$30 and each card can only hold up to S$500, so your kids won't be wreaking too much havoc on your bank account.
The app also allows users to keep a close watch on their EZ-Link cards, showing details of previous transactions (up to 30) and checking balances. Obsessive compulsive commuters can track trips right down to the alighting time on their transaction history.
The top-up service is free from 5th December 2013 to 31st May 2014 for all MasterCard cardholders. Non-MasterCard users will have to pay a paltry S$0.30 convenience fee for each successful top-up, regardless of amounts.
