LG G5 Quick Phone Cover revealed – before the phone itself

Let’s call this what it is: the limpest announcement of a flagship phone in the history of telephony

Talk about letting the cat out of the bag – LG just announced a case for a phone that doesn’t officially exist yet.

It was hardly going to be a surprise when LG reveals the G5 at MWC in two weeks’ time, given the company’s mobile division has been leakier than a rusty bucket recently, but it’s still a bizarre move to confirm the thing in a press release about a phone case.

In fact, I’m convinced the announcement might actually be poking fun at the entire smartphone industry. Claiming to answer “the age old question – what came first, the smartphone or the cover?” is an almost Brass Eye level of snark.

Saying that the always-on display is merely “rumoured to be a feature” in the “highly anticipated” G5? Bravo, LG. Bravo.

There are a few facts about the case buried underneath all the sarcasm. It’s a new version of the Quick cover, a flip case that’s seen versions for the G2, G3 and G4.

It’s made of a semi-transparent mesh that’ll let you use the touchscreen even when the cover’s closed, so you can answer calls and dismiss notifications.

There’s a big cut-out for the always-on screen, which will shine through showing the time, date and notification icons. It’s got a glossy metal finish, too.

Expect it to arrive alongside the G5 on the 21st of February at MWC – just don’t hold your breath for any more surprises.
