Gearbox is heading back to Pandora, Borderlands 3 officially in production

But it's early - still, this is good news for shooter nuts

The development of a third proper Borderlands game by Gearbox Software has always seemed like a matter of “when” rather than “if,” and with Battleborn about to release, that “when” is now.

During the PAX East convention in Boston over the weekend, Gearbox president and CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed that the studio is currently working on Borderlands 3. “It’s no secret, obviously there’s going to be another Borderlands,” he affirmed.

However, it might not even be called “Borderlands 3” whenever the raucous co-op shooter finally reaches store shelves – Pitchford says it’s far too early to be making any decisions like that. “We don’t even know if we’re going to call it that. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know,” he added.

The studio’s chief creative champion, Mikey Neumann, will pen the script, while Battleborn art director Scott Kester will perform the same role on Borderlands 3. At the convention, the studio teased that not only will Battleborn have Borderlands references tucked within, but that the post-release DLC will also tease Borderlands 3 in some ways.

It sounds like the team has been in development for just a few months now. Sergi Brosa, a Spanish artist, posted on Facebook today that he’s one of the main concept character artists for the game, and he says he’s been working with Gearbox for three months. That logo above? It’s his concept, but he says it’s not an official image for the game.

Since the release of Borderlands 2 in 2012, the series has deviated in a couple different ways. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel was primarily developed by 2K Australia, acting as a stopgap release while Gearbox focused on Battleborn, and Telltale’s Tales from the Borderlands‘ first season ran between 2014-15, offering a narrative side story that was well received by reviewers.
