Fully Charged: First Harry Potter spinoff film teaser, and Bayonetta coming to Smash Bros.

All the tech and entertainment news you need to get the morning started

Fantastic Beasts teaser

Looks like eight Harry Potter films wasn’t enough for Warner Bros. Pictures, as the studio and writer J.K. Rowling have a trio of spinoffs coming to cinemas starting late next year. Here’s the first teaser for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which Rowling herself wrote based on her own 2001 side book from the Harry Potter franchise.

Starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, the first film tells the story of his meeting with the Magical Congress of the United States of America, which results in the titular beasts escaping from his briefcase. It’s set in 1926, well before the Harry Potter films, and director David Yates – who helmed the last four Harry Potter entries – is back for this as well. Fantastic Beasts comes out on 18 November 2016, with the next two films out in 2018 and 2020 respectively.

Bayonetta in Smash Bros.

Last night, Nintendo held its final video presentation for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and the news was significant: in addition to Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII, who was revealed a few weeks back, the titular heroine from Bayonetta will join the series, along with Corrin from next year’s Fire Emblem Fates. And Nintendo will make an Amiibo figure for all three in 2016.

Cloud Strife is actually available to purchase now in the game, with a special stage included, while Bayonetta and Corrin will release in February. The Amiibo figures for all three will follow sometime thereafter.

Project Fi adds tablet support

Google’s Project Fi cellular service is slowly, but surely expanding its functionality in the United States, and yesterday the company announced that tablets and other data-only devices can now be used on the service for current subscribers.

Only recent Nexus phones can use the full-fledged service, which picks the best available connection from two existing wireless carriers and available Wi-Fi, and subscribers can now order a free SIM card for an iPad or other tablet to use Project Fi’s data capabilities on an extra device. It’s still US$10 per gigabyte used, and you’ll pay only for the precise amount of data you expend.
