Apple’s WWDC 2016 dated for 13-17 June, says Siri

Expect iOS 10, OS X (or MacOS) 10.12, and other reveals

UPDATE: Apple has launched the WWDC 2016 webpage, with ticket lottery registration now open for developers.

ORIGINAL STORY: While Apple tends to announce most of its major hardware at standalone events in the autumn and sometimes spring, the company makes most of its big software reveals at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference.

And now we know exactly when to expect the next one: in just a couple short months from 13-17 June in San Francisco, California. That news comes directly from Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, which started telling iOS owners the WWDC 2016 dates today when specifically asked about the event.

At the moment, that’s all we have: Apple hasn’t yet made a proper announcement about the event and which developer sessions will be held, nor have they sent out a teaser image for all of us to try and dissect meaning from. Then again, last year’s event invitation seemed to show an Apple TV silhouette, but it was months later before we actually saw the new device and its OS.

Still, we already have some clues of what to expect, both from history and recent rumours and reports. The debut of iOS 10 seems a certainty, although for now there aren’t a lot of big clues of what to expect on the software front. One hint is that iOS 10 will finally let you properly hide some stock Apple apps, rather than make you tuck them into folders to get them out of sight.

We’re also sure to see the next Mac operating system update, which would typically be called OS X 10.12, but rumours suggest Apple might rebrand it as “MacOS.” It might also finally incorporate Siri on the desktop (mockup via 9to5Mac), after years and years of rumours on the subject.

Don’t be surprised if we also get hints about larger-scale watchOS and tvOS updates, as well, plus there are hints that a MacBook refresh is on the horizon. If it doesn’t happen in the next couple months, then we’ll probably see those appear at WWDC as well.

Developers, stay tuned: Apple will surely issue official details on WWDC shortly, and you’ll have your chance to enter the lottery for the limited tally of tickets. Everyone else, mark your calendars: we’ll surely get a glimpse at the next wave of Apple OS and software enhancements in two short months.
