The power and volume buttons are in the same position on the rear, and the textured plastic is a big improvement over the G2&#39;s slippery plastic shell.</p> <p>If you&#39;ve ever held a G2 then you&#39;ll already know whether or not you&#39;ll get on with LG&#39;s rear button layout. The G Pro can also be locked and unlocked with a screen tap combination if you&rsquo;re not a fan of the button placement. More on that later.</p> <p>The G Pro 2 also shares the G2&#39;s sexy slim bezels, cramming more screen into a smaller body.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&#39;s tricky to choose a winner here. We rather like the G Pro 2&#39;s rear button placement, but the Note 3&#39;s grippy back is welcome, especially as phones of this size can be precarious to use with one hand.&nbsp;</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>Draw</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Note-3-back_0.JPG?1398263379" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/g-pro-2-fornt.JPG?1398251294" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/g-pro-2-back.JPG?1398251294" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Upgradability </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy Note 3&#39;s removable rear cover reveals a replaceable battery and microSD slot. LCD displays tend to serve up purer whites and more realistic colours than their AMOLED counterparts. Both devices can record 4K video at 30fps, 1080 video at 60fps, and slow motion 720p video at 120fps.</p> <p>So far so even.</p> <p>The G Pro 2, being the newer device, has a few more tricks up its sleeve however. For starters, it&#39;s built on the already excellent OIS (optical image stabilisation) of the G2, and its OIS+ technology promises even better performance in low light conditions.</p> <p>Like the Galaxy S5, the G Pro 2 lets you refocus on different parts of a shot after you&#39;ve taken a photo. LG calls this Magic Focus, and we were impressed with it during our hands-on time with the G Pro 2 at MWC.</p> <p>Magic Focus works by taking two different shots at different focal lengths, before letting you can tap anywhere on the screen to bring a particular area into focus.&nbsp;</p> <p>Both cameras have impressive specs and performance, but the G Pro 2&#39;s extra tricks win this round.</p> <p>Winner: LG G Pro 2</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power and battery life </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G Pro 2 and Note 3 both have identical quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 brains, along with 3GB of RAM to help run hordes of apps simultaneously.</p> <p>As you&#39;d expect, both phones blaze along without a problem. Although we&#39;ve yet to carry out a full in-depth review of the G Pro 2, we can&#39;t see it struggling with anything Android throws at it.</p> <p>Both devices pack in a removable 3200mAh battery. We&#39;re reserving judgement until we can test how quickly each device runs out of juice side by side, but both offer the convenience of hot-swapping power packs while you&#39;re on the go.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>Draw</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/note-3-charger.JPG?1398263379" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tasty extras </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This is where things get interesting. LG has developed the concept further, creating a new feature called Knock Code.</p> <p>Knock Code supports up to eight separate tap combinations across the G Pro 2&#39;s display, and LG reckons there&#39;s up to 80,000 potential combinations.</p> <p>It works really well, and it&#39;s a feature we wish was baked into all Android devices. Given that LG has patented the feature though, we don&#39;t expect that happening anytime soon.</p> <p>Again, this round is up to personal preference. If you&#39;re a big stylus user then it goes without saying that the Note 3 is the better choice for you.</p> <p>If you couldn&#39;t care less about tapping away on a phone with anything other than your fingers though, then the G2 will probably be the better choice.</p> <p>Both phones offer the ability to run two apps split across a single screen at once, and you can shrink down both UIs for easier one-handed use.</p> <p><em>Winner:&nbsp;</em><strong>Draw</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As you can tell by the number of draws, this is one of the closest on-paper battles we&#39;ve ever had.</p> <p>Despite being released months after the Note 3&#39;s release, The G Pro 2&#39;s insides aren&#39;t any more powerful. On paper, both devices are as speedy as each other, but they offer vastly different designs and extras.</p> <p>The S Pen sets the Note 3 apart, but unless you&#39;re really after a stylus then we think the G Pro 2 edges out ahead, thanks to its excellent Knock Code feature and extra camera tricks.</p> <p>Stay tuned for our full in-depth LG G Pro 2 review.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g-pro-2/mwc-2014/lg-g-pro-2-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">LG G Pro 2 hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/g-pro-2-verdict.JPG?1398245116" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung-galaxy-note-3-vs-lg-g-pro-2/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung-galaxy-note-3-vs-lg-g-pro-2/feature#comments G Pro 2 Galaxy Note 3 LG Samsung Smartphones Thu, 20 Mar 2014 17:50:28 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1434074 at http://www.stuff.tv Rejoice, phablet lovers, the LG G Pro 2 comes to Singapore by end March http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g-pro-2/phabet-lovers-lg-g-pro-2-sas-arriving-singapore-end-march/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Within a month after its grand unveiling at MWC 2014, the phabulous LG G Pro 2 will be available in Singapore </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="4000" height="3000" title="Phabet lovers, the LG G Pro 2 sas arriving in Singapore at the end March" alt="Phabet lovers, the LG G Pro 2 sas arriving in Singapore at the end March" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/DSCN9950_0.JPG?1394697781" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Fresh from its unveiling at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/mwc-2014" target="_blank">MWC 2014</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g-pro-2/mwc-2014/lg-g-pro-2-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">LG G Pro 2</a>&nbsp;is on its way to Singapore.</p> <p>With the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">LG G2</a>&nbsp;still at the top of our&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/smartphones/top-ten" target="_blank">Top 10 Smartphones list</a>, we expect a lot from this phablet. Combinations with up to 8 taps can be created, if you&#39;re feeling particularly paranoid, and there are 80,000 possible combinations according to LG.</p> <p>It&#39;s an innovative feature and a very decent alternative to the Galaxy S5&#39;s fingerprint scanner, as it works when the screen is off.</p> <p>The Galaxy S5 on the other hand, requires you to wake the screen up with the power button before swiping, which takes a little longer.</p> <p>LG will be bringing Knock Code to all its high-end devices, and we&#39;d bet our entire collection of gadgets that Knock Code will be landing on the G2 when it eventually gets updated to Android 4.4 KitKat.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Snap Happy </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G Pro 2 has a 13MP camera with nine-point autofocus and it builds on the G2&#39;s already excellent Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) with a new OIS+ system which enables the shutter to stay open even longer without causing blur, resulting in more light being guzzled up.</p> <p>The end result is better performance in low light conditions. While we couldn&#39;t test this out in the brightly-lit press room, we look forward to taking it for a spin in a dimly lit pub.&nbsp;</p> <p>The G Pro 2 also has 4K UHD video recording and 120fps slow motion video capture.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" title="MWC 2014: LG G Pro 2 hands-on review" alt="MWC 2014: LG G Pro 2 hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9934.JPG?1393466538" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><iframe class="vine-embed" frameborder="0" height="480" src="https://vine.co/v/MmnaFOiInII/embed/simple" width="480"></iframe></p> <p>Like the Galaxy S5, the G Pro 2 will let you fiddle around with the focus after you&#39;ve taken a picture. LG calls this Magic Focus, and you&#39;ll be glad to hear that it delivers.</p> <p>It works by taking two separate shots at different focal lengths, and you can tap anywhere on the screen to bring a particular area into focus.&nbsp;</p> <p>We actually prefer LG&#39;s implementation to Samsung&#39;s, as it lets you tap anywhere on the screen. Admittedly the off-skew 3.4in to 4.7in UI is a little off-putting at first, but it&#39;s darn useful, too.</p> <p dir="ltr">Though its 5.9in display crosses into the phablet region, its 172g weight doesn&rsquo;t have the heft commonly associated with phablets such as the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/sony-xperia-z-ultra/review" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z Ultra</a>&nbsp;or even the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Note 3</a>. The slim 8.3mm profile is another design victory, and the ease with which it slips into your pocket makes it a real winner.</p> <p dir="ltr">Unlike the earlier G Pro&rsquo;s slippery smooth rear, the G Pro 2&rsquo;s textured design provides a much firmer grip. Its physical volume and power buttons, as with the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">G2</a>, are inconspicuously placed at the rear. In theory, your index finger will rest naturally on the back and instinctively reach for the buttons, but while this design worked well for the G2&rsquo;s shorter body and the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g-flex/lg-g-flex/review" target="_blank">G Flex&rsquo;s</a>&nbsp;curved chassis, the flatter and lengthier G Pro 2 requires ET-like digits to be truly comfortable.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/sony-xperia-z-ultra/review" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z Ultra review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="It&#039;s a great way to for your thumb to do stretching exercises" alt="LG G Pro 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G%20Pro%202%20build%2001_2.jpg?1398825964" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Small hands? Clear, detailed shots taken under bright daylight are unsurprisingly easy on the eyes, but what makes the G Pro 2 a real belter is its night time shots - the G Pro 2 allows just the right number of photons to land on the sensor with the right shutter speed lighting dim scenes brilliantly. Admittedly, a certain degree of imaging noise is still visible, but far less than with competitors&rsquo; snappers.</p> <p dir="ltr">Shooting modes from its earlier siblings are retained. Think Lytro, which lets you re-focus your images after you&rsquo;ve taken them. Not exactly a unique feature, since everyone&rsquo;s doing it - HTC calls it uFocus on the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">HTC One (M8)</a>&nbsp;while Samsung went with Selective Focus. But that doesn&rsquo;t make it any less fantastic, especially when you get to pass off as a competent photographer by creating selective bokeh effects to make photos more artsy.</p> <p dir="ltr">Unlike the more sophisticated, hardware-based One M8 system, though, the G Pro 2 requires distinct contrast between the foreground and background, and that means there&#39;s a definite knack to creating a distinct focus between two objects. If you&rsquo;re taking notes, here&rsquo;s another - you&rsquo;ll need steady hands. Even a slight movement in Magic Focus mode can screw up the focusing dynamics.</p> <p dir="ltr">That rear volume button also doubles as the shutter button, which seems weird until you take a selfie. Intuitively, your index finger reaches for and presses the volume up button when you hold the phone in one hand. Customising up to five shortcuts for the front touch buttons might sound insignificant, but it makes a whole lot of difference considering the G 2 Pro&rsquo;s unusually long body. The notifications shortcut, for example, is a life-saver. Instead of stretching your thumbs to pull the notifications menu down, a simple tap on the button does the trick. The same applies for the recent apps function, which is usually activated by tapping and holding onto the home button.</p> <p dir="ltr">We spent most of our time with KnockOn, tapping the display instead of hitting the rear power button to wake or sleep the device. For a while, it worked perfectly, until we noticed that the device came to life too easily whenever we grabbed the phone. At this point, we activated the new KnockCode which lets you determine where and how many knocks on the screen are required to unlock the phone. Caveman simple, but superbly, satisfyingly nerdy.</p> <p dir="ltr">Then there&#39;s Content Lock. This second layer of protection, located in the Security settings, locks and hides specified photos and videos in the gallery, and any notes within the Memo app, with another password, therefore protecting them from the prying eyes of partners, offspring and thieves.</p> <p dir="ltr">The likes of the QSlide video widget and Smart Stay (which keeps the screen alive while you stare at it) are still around and work well. Dual Browser, which splits the screen to house two apps for concurrent use, theoretically sound useful, but actually kind of defeats the purpose of viewing text and images on a generous 5.9in display.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/android-45/review" target="_blank">Android 4.5 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Three apps are never a crowd, not when you can access them easily with a three-finger swipe" alt="LG G Pro 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G%20Pro%202%20OS%2001_1.jpg?1398825964" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Need more buttons? Disappointment follows.</p> <p dir="ltr">During an hour of minimal usage, and by minimal, we mean not a single WhatsApp message or Facebook stalking involved, its juice dropped from 100% to 90%.</p> <p dir="ltr">By the end of an average 12-hour work day, with ample amount of messages sent through WhatsApp, Gmail and Facebook, we were down to a mere 14%, which dropped below 10% after a 30-minute drive.</p> <p dir="ltr">An hour of HD movies or games will cost you over 20% of your battery, too. Even sitting untouched and on standy for 10 hours saw it drop 40%.</p> <p dir="ltr">To cut a long story short, getting a day out of the G Pro 2 is a tricky business, and that&#39;s not really good enough.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Battery life? It&#39;s light, easy to handle and fits snugly in a pocket - all rarities in the phablet world.</p> <p dir="ltr">The G Pro 2 has plenty when it comes to features, too, with KnockCode proving a particularly useful and inventive example.</p> <p dir="ltr">And on top of that it&#39;s plenty powerful, mocking its relatively small AnTuTu score by juggling mountains of apps without stutter or lag.</p> <p dir="ltr">But the battery life is a problem. We weren&#39;t necessarily expecting the sort of power-sipping that the G2 demonstrated, but we were expecting (and always expect) a full day of moderate use. The G Pro 2 can&#39;t manage that, and that leaves the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a>&nbsp;safe in its position as best phablet in the world - at least for now.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/smartphones/top-ten" target="_blank">The 10 Best Smartphones in the World right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The G Pro 2 is a good phablet.
