The screen is a big part of that – it's big (for a small, light tablet) with minimal 7.2mm bezels either side, almost as skinny as the iPad Mini's in fact. It's bright, vibrant and sharp too. Sure, at 1920x1200 over 8.3in that's not quite as crisp as the new Nexus 7 but it certainly gives it a run for its money and puts the iPad Mini to shame, for now.</p> <p>Plus, as just mentioned, the 8.3 is light at just 338g, very slim at 8.2mm thick and as easy to hold one handed as Apple's small iPad. You won't be gripping it in one hand as you would a Nexus, and it might not squeeze into some of the same pockets as Google uber-tab manages to but LG has propelled its tablet line to the scrap for the top that it was once shunned from.</p> <p>The really solid, mostly aluminium build is the other half of the G Pad 8.3's seemingly winning equation – models come in black and white colours with some plastic but we much prefer the G Pad's styling to the G2, for instance.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-GPad-83-hands-on-hero.JPG?1378687970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Pad-83-hands-on-rear-camera.JPG?1378687970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Pad-83-hands-on-lockscreen-apps.JPG?1378687970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Pad-83-hands-on-black-model.JPG?1378687970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Plenty of power, huge battery – now all we need is a price and release date </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We took the time out of our busy IFA schedule to test out the G Pad's 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor and 2GB of RAM with Asphalt 8 and we weren't disappointed by the Alec Baldwin-smooth gameplay not to mention quick responses when flitting through apps, webpages and menus. The G Pad's also rocking a 4,600mAh battery, launches on Android 4.2.2 and sports a 5MP rear camera too.</p> <p>Extras pushed over from the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">G2</a> include KnockOn which lets you double-tap the display to wake it up and works very well on the G Pad and its alt-multi-tasking tool Q Swipe which throws open apps to the side of the screen with a three finger swipe action. Q Pair – which we weren't able to try in our hands on – pairs the tab with Android phones like the G2 over Bluetooth for the usual tethering, quick sending of files and even picking up phone calls on the G Pad.</p> <p>The one thing lacking from the G Pad 8.3? A price and release. If LG can place this at somewhere around the £200-£250 mark ($398-$498), it has a shot at stealing some of the Nexus 7's fans away. Any more and it will be lumped in with legions of Samsung tablets that are just too expensive compared to the budget Android competition. As for a release, LG is keeping quiet for now but we hope review units turn up soon so we can see what the G Pad 8.3 is really made of.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Pad-83-hands-on-screen.JPG?1378687970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Pad-83-hands-on-performance.JPG?1378687970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Pad-83-hands-on-rear-design.JPG?1378687970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/lg/ifa-2013/hands-review-lg-g-pad-83-real-ipad-mini-rival/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/lg/ifa-2013/hands-review-lg-g-pad-83-real-ipad-mini-rival/news#comments IFA 2013 LG Tablets Sun, 08 Sep 2013 10:33:53 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1426392 at http://www.stuff.tv Hands-on video review: Samsung Galaxy Gear – is this the smartwatch we've been waiting for? http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-gear/ifa-2013/hands-video-review-samsung-galaxy-gear-smartwatch-weve-been-waiting/video <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung may have beaten Apple to the punch with its wrist-mounted accessory, but will you want to strap one on your wrist – more importantly, will you want to talk into it? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Hands on video-review: Samsung Galaxy Gear – is this the smartwatch we&#039;ve been waiting for?" alt="Hands on video-review: Samsung Galaxy Gear – is this the smartwatch we&#039;ve been w" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Screen%20shot%202013-09-07%20at%2018.46.11_0.png?1379516884" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-2656341327001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="2656341327001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. If you're used to pumped up Samsung Galaxy hardware and the like, you'll find the Toq's display very muted. But it's easy to read even with sunlight streaming in through the windows and crucially low power – more on that later.</p> <p>So what can you do with it? Connect it to an Android device that's running 4.0.3 or later to get going. There's no speaker or mic for making phone calls but you can use a Bluetooth headset and also read your latest text messages on the Toq's screen and answer calls. For instance, if you get a call, it will show up on the Toq's screen and you can press to answer it while you rummage around in your bag for your handset.</p> <p>Qualcomm's smartwatch has a simple but slick homescreen that you can scroll through to choose between weather, your synced calendar, viewing stocks info and basic music player.</p> <p>Interestingly, once Qualcomm's Internet of Things platform AllJoyn starts rolling out and getting more devices onboard, we'll also be able to view and respond to notifications sent from your washing machine, light bulbs, coffee machine or alarm clock on the Toq's screen. An AllJoyn house would be the perfect accessory to the Toq smartwatch – we just need Qualcomm and everyone else to make it happen.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qualcomm-toq-smartwatch-hands-on-1.JPG?1378607102" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qualcomm-toq-smartwatch-hands-on-2.JPG?1378607102" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qualcomm-toq-smartwatch-hands-on-5.JPG?1378607102" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qualcomm-toq-smartwatch-menu.JPG?1378607102" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Proof of concept? That's what WobbleWorks has done and thanks to Kickstarter backers, within the month the final products will be shipping to 3Doodler fans.</p> <p>If your mind is blown by printers like the UP! Plus and Makerbot Replicator 2, be prepared because this truly 3D sketching tool will scrape up the remaining pieces and dropkick them far, far away. Here's how we got on.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 3Doodling </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The 3Doodler itself is like a fat Cuban cigar in the hand but it does still feel natural, like drawing and it works best when held exactly like a regular pen. It needs external power to work but that's because it's heating up to 200/250 degrees to get going. So fair enough.</p> <p>In our hands on, co-inventor Maxwell Bogue made sure we didn't burn ourselves on the 3Doodler's nozzle but even clumsy creatives will feel safe using it. There's fast and slow buttons on the top edge to control how fast the plastic – ABS or PLA – comes out and as you sketch, the 3Doodler makes an excellent workmanlike noise. So it won't be embarrassed next to the rest of the inhabitants of your toolbox.</p> <p>To get going, we held the button (fast in our attempt) down to get started then when the plastic 'ink' came out, pushed it down to paper on a flat surface to anchor our 3D sketch. Then it was up and away circling vertically and watching it set as we went along. It really is incredibly fast – you don't need to wait for your creation to catch up with you.</p> <p>The red robot pin that Bogue created for Stuff took around five minutes, used only one stick of plastic inserted into the 3Doodler pen. And when one of the legs snapped off afterwards, all it took was another quick hit of plastic to repair the damage. Awesome.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/3Doodler-hands-on-Lucy.JPG?1379254142" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/3doodler-hands-on-name.JPG?1379254142" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/3doodler-hands-on-PLA.JPG?1379254142" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Printing Pen Versus 3D Printers </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As well as being quicker than 3D printers – you'll tend to create hollow objects rather than dense parts due to the nature of the 3Doodler process – it also means you don't have to contend with 3D modelling software to realise what's in your head.</p> <p>Drawing in the air takes some getting used to though. So, like its predecessor, the Yoga G Pro can be used in laptop mode with the screen flipped all the way around as a hefty tablet, or in tent/stand modes for presentations.</p> <p>One of our problems in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/ideapad-yoga/lenovo-ideapad-yoga-hands-review/news" target="_blank">test of the original Yoga</a> is that you can still feel the keys underneath – and that hasn't changed on this model. On the business-friendly ThinkPad Yoga, though, the keys lift up and flatten out. We're not sure why Lenovo didn't kit out the 2 Pro with this feature and it's a shame.</p> <p>The keyboard is backlit, though – handy in shady press conferences, we're sure – and it'll come as no surprise to find that the Yoga 2 Pro is thinner at 15.5mm and lighter at 1.39kg than the original. To be honest, at this size it's much of a muchness but we suppose every little helps. In our short play, we did find the Yoga 2 Pro to be as heavy as a regular laptop so we can't see too much movie-watching in bed happening. In stand mode in the kitchen, though? Plus the screen's very bright too, maxing out at 350 nits which is four times brighter than the old Yoga.</p> <p>We weren't able to load up any hi-res images or video to really see the difference – but viewing angles were decent for films with a friend and swiping through Live Tiles was responsive too.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro" alt="Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lenovo-yoga-2-pro-hands-on-6.JPG?1378440331" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" title="Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro" alt="Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lenovo-yoga-2-pro-hands-on-4.JPG?1378440331" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen Modes and OS tricks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>No new screen modes then but Lenovo has thoughtfully added some rubber to the edge of the display to protect the Yoga 2 Pro when in tent mode. On the software side of things, Yoga Picks is also pretty nifty – it recognises what screen mode you are in and suggests apps to open though we did have a bit of trouble switching it to tent mode in our time with it.</p> <p>Voice control is now built in – a useful touch if swiping gets too tiring – so with Yoga Camera Man you can tell the Yoga 2 Pro to take a photo without any prodding. And with basic gesture controls you can swipe through recipes in the aforementioned Yoga Chef without getting chilli oil on that beautiful screen.</p> <p>We're looking forward to spending some more quality time with the 2 Pro back home. It will be launching this October for €1300 ($2,182) – but we'll update Lenovo fans with SG pricing as and when we get confirmation.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro" alt="Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lenovo-yoga-2-pro-hands-on-1.JPG?1378440331" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" title="Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro" alt="Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lenovo-yoga-2-pro-hands-on-2.JPG?1378440331" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro" alt="Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lenovo-yoga-2-pro-hands-on-3.JPG?1378440331" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/lenovo/ifa-2013/hands-review-lenovo-yoga-2-pro/news#comments IFA 2013 Laptops Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro Thu, 05 Sep 2013 15:29:35 +0000 Elissa Loi 1426277 at http://www.stuff.tv
