However, these days it&rsquo;s packed with mid-range mobiles with a slightly more fun, less fashion- and spec-obsessed feel to them.</p> <p>We see the lighter approach of the Desire range throughout the Desire Eye, but it&rsquo;s most obvious in the more basic design. While HTC&rsquo;s One phones are made of aluminium, the Desire Eye embraces plastic much in the way&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia/nokia-lumia-630/review" target="_blank">Nokia Lumia phones do</a>.</p> <p>The smooth, soft, two-tone finish of the Desire Eye isn&rsquo;t out to make its mark the Eye out as a pocket-size status symbol, but it feels great and has a cheery disposition that&rsquo;s instantly likeable.</p> <p>Would we change anything? Sure. There&rsquo;s a fair bit of space above and below the screen and slimmer bezels would give the Desire a sleeker look, but we&rsquo;ve no serious complaints on looks. Even the front camera is about as low-key as the hardware allows.</p> <p><strong>Read More:<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g3/lg-g3/review">&nbsp;LG G3 Review</a><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pretty in polycarbonate" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-2_1_0.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Eye desires a dunking </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&rsquo;ll let you in on a little secret: in many respects the Desire Eye is a match for the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">One M8</a>. Just don&rsquo;t tell HTC we told you so.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s even better in one respect, too. The Desire Eye is certified to IPx7, a water resistance standard that means the phone can be dunked in water to a depth of a metre and left there for 30 minutes with no ill effects. While we&rsquo;ve seen videos of the HTC One M8 being submerged without heading straight to the great Carphone Warehouse in the sky, it doesn&rsquo;t officially offer any water resistance.</p> <p>The best bit about the Desire Eye&rsquo;s waterproofing ability is that it doesn&rsquo;t need any extra flaps over the microUSB or headphone ports. It&rsquo;s the best kind of weatherproofing: the kind you can completely ignore.</p> <p>Not as taken with the blue shell of our review sample as we are? There&rsquo;s also a red/white version out there.&nbsp;</p> <p>The only thing to note is that while this is one of the friendliest-looking phones HTC makes, it&rsquo;s still fairly large thanks to its 5.2-inch screen. And despite being just 8.5mm it feels quite chunky compared to the latest, slimmest smartphones around.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/water-proof-htc-butterfly-2-will-fly-singapore-very-soon/news" target="_blank">HTC Butterfly 2 is the waterproof One (M8) you always wanted</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Colours and shape to suit you " alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-30_1_0.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The SD Card and SIM card trays will keep your vitals safe - as long as you push them back in, of course" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-27_1.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Despite being just 8.5mm it feels quite chunky compared to the latest, slimmest smartphones around" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-28_0_0.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen spec inspection </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Other than being just a smidge bigger (5.2in to 5in) the Desire Eye&rsquo;s display is very similar to that of the HTC One M8. It&rsquo;s sharp, and offers natural-looking rather than over saturated, super-vivid colours. That&rsquo;s definitely a good thing as far as we&rsquo;re concerned.</p> <p>Within a few short months, QHD resolution will probably be the normal resolution for phones of S$700 and above, but for now we&rsquo;re perfectly happy with the 1080p resolution offered here. 424ppi is plenty for now, thanks very much.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not quite perfect, though. The HTC Desire Eye doesn&rsquo;t have blacks anywhere near as deep as OLED phones such as the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/lumia-icon/nokia-lumia-icon/review" target="_blank">Nokia Lumia 930</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>, resulting in distinctly lower contrast. It&rsquo;s not just OLEDs it has to compete with, either &mdash; the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z3</a>&nbsp;offers better blacks and better contrast, and it uses an LCD screen. It&rsquo;s no deal-breaker - contrast levels are similar on the much-loved One M8 - but black level aficionados might appreciate knowing.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-s6/samsung-galaxy-s6-what-we-d-see-samsung-s-next-flagship" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S6 Preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Desire Eye&#039;s 5.2in screen is sharp and offers natural-looking rather than over saturated, super-vivid colours" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-11_0_0.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Seeing Sense </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The software is also shared with the HTC One M8 which means the Desire Eye runs Android 4.4.4 with HTC&rsquo;s custom Sense interface.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s a neat interface that makes some interesting changes to stock Android. On the light and fluffy side, it makes your apps menu scroll vertically rather than horizontally &mdash; because everyone likes being contrarian once in a while &mdash; and directly under the spotlight sits BlinkFeed.</p> <p>This is a homescreen that offers a reel of the latest updates from Facebook, Twitter, your favourite websites &mdash; whatever you choose to put in. It&rsquo;s a handy extra, but in our experience it&rsquo;s a real love-it-or-hate-it thing, and HTC makes sure getting rid of it is easy enough.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve always liked Sense and it works well on the Desire Eye, but it does feel like it&rsquo;s now due a bit of a pep-up, especially in light of the Lollipop launch. Simplicity is the order of the day, and HTC&rsquo;s interface is now looking just a touch fussier than it might.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/stuffs-guide-photography/feature" target="_blank">Stuff&#39;s Guide to Photography</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Get a sense of your smartphone" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-34_0_0.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> HTC Desire Eye Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Operating System</strong>: Android 4.4.4 with Sense UI</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 5.2in LCD with 1920x1080 resolution (424ppi)</p> <p><strong>Processor</strong>: Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 @ 2.3GHz</p> <p><strong>RAM</strong>: 2GB</p> <p><strong>Storage</strong>: 16GB (expandable by up to 128GB with microSD)</p> <p><strong>Camera</strong>: 13MP front with dual-LED flash, 13MP rear with dual-LED flash</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: NFC, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX</p> <p><strong>Battery</strong>: 2400mAh</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 152 x 74 x 8.5mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 154g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performing monkey </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Spec-wise the Desire Eye is well equipped. Sure enough, gaming performance is great too. A 5.2-inch display and plenty of power is great news for gamers.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s another neat little gaming extra too, and it&rsquo;s not one you might spot at first glance. The HTC Desire Eye actually fits in a pair of BoomSound speakers, hidden behind tiny little slits above and below the screen.</p> <p>The voicing of these speakers seems to be a little more conservative than the HTC One M8&rsquo;s despite them being both tagged with the mighty BoomSound name &mdash; the sound seems a little less beefy &mdash; but they&rsquo;re still much better than average.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">Apple iPhone 6 review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A Geekbench score of 3037 points puts it in the same league as the HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z3" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-6_1_0.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> I have an eye on you </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>By now you&rsquo;ve probably cottoned on to the fact that the Desire Eye is a lot more than the one trick pony some may have been expecting, but let&rsquo;s get onto the main event, the cameras.</p> <p>The HTC Desire Eye is the first camera we&rsquo;ve looked at to feature 13-megapixel cameras on the front and back. Both have dual-LED flashes too, each LED using a different tone to avoid blowing out people&rsquo;s faces, much like Apple&rsquo;s TrueTone flash.</p> <p>Your first assumption might be that they&rsquo;re exactly the same, but they&rsquo;re subtly different. The front camera has a wider-angle lens with a narrower aperture. Look carefully at the lenses and you can actually see the difference in aperture size.</p> <p>While the rear 13-megapixel main sensor may seem like a downgrade from the UltraPixel one used in the HTC One M8, we&rsquo;re pretty happy with what you get here.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve used a few pretty sluggish camera phones recently, but the Desire Eye is quick. Focusing is snappy and shutter lag is virtually non-existent, making it feel like the camera is capturing a shot the exact moment you press the shutter button.</p> <p>This is also one of the few recent Android phones to offer a dedicated shutter button, something that&rsquo;s often left out these days. It&rsquo;s a bit stiff, but it&rsquo;s hugely useful and there&rsquo;s no obligation to use it if you find it a bit finicky.</p> <p>The software behind the Desire Eye&rsquo;s camera is much the same as the HTC One M8&rsquo;s, which means it looks cool, even though buries the HDR mode a little too deeply for considering it&rsquo;s such a useful day-to-day tool for mobile snappers.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="While the rear 13-megapixel main sensor may seem like a downgrade from the UltraPixel one used in the HTC One M8, we’re pretty happy with what you get here - it&#039;s quick, for a start" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-26_0_2.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The software behind the Desire Eye’s camera is much the same as the HTC One M8’s, which means it looks cool" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-4_0_1.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Image quality is pretty good for the most part, though. Both the front and rear cameras use the same Sony IMX214 sensor seen in phones such as the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/oneplus-one/review" target="_blank">OnePlus One</a>, and it&rsquo;s pretty comparable with the IMX135 sensor used in the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">LG G3</a>&nbsp;&mdash; more advanced in fact.</p> <p>In daylight your shots will have loads of detail, and we found day/dusk metering to be pretty good. Add this to the very good shooting speed and you have a camera that&rsquo;s bags of fun to use.</p> <p>The only obvious weak point is that for night shooting, the Desire Eye doesn&rsquo;t radically brighten-up images to make them clear. Truly dark scenes will remain more-or-less black unless you switch the flash on. It&rsquo;s a shame, but at least the two-tone flash provides more natural-looking results than a standard white-LED one.</p> <p>We also had some minor issues with the Desire Eye taking photos before it has really achieved focus, but this is a predictable result of being so desperate to be speedy, and can be solved by just taking a few more &lsquo;security&rsquo; shots.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/smartphone-photography/feature" target="_blank">Beta Yourself: Smartphone Photography</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4208" height="2368" title="In daylight your shots will have loads of detail, and we found day/dusk metering to be pretty good" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG0100_0_0.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4208" height="2368" title="Well that should just about do me for Christmas Day" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG0063_1.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4208" height="2368" title="We had some minor issues with the Desire Eye taking photos before it has really achieved focus" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG0042_0_0.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Get ready for your close-up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So, around the front &mdash; how good are the Desire Eye&rsquo;s selfies? They&rsquo;re great, and the wide 20mm angle of the lens makes taking selfies of multiple people easy enough.</p> <p>Having a sensor as strong as the IMX214 on-board for selfies means it&rsquo;s not all about resolution without added detail &mdash; some higher res sensors hardly seem to actually get you much more detail than a bog-standard one. As long as you have a bit of light to work with, the Desire will render each hair, wrinkle and crease with depressing accuracy.</p> <p>If it all gets a bit much, though, there&rsquo;s a &lsquo;magic&rsquo; slider that smoothes-out those bits that might remind you too much of your own mortality.</p> <p>There are a few other selfie-specific modes too. Photo booth takes a quartet of shots which are then woven together in one nice, Facebook-able image, while Split Capture takes the output from the front and rear cameras and spews them out as a single image.</p> <p>There are improvements to be made in the HTC Desire Eye camera setup, but it&rsquo;s probably less problematic than the HTC One M8 in day-to-day use thanks to its more reliable metering and all-round greater detail capture. Plus you can really use the front camera to work out how dreadful you really look on those post-party mornings.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="As long as you have a bit of light to work with, the Desire&#039;s front camera will render each hair, wrinkle and crease with depressing accuracy" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-32_0.jpg?1419212732" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Juice me up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Battery life is surprisingly good given the 2400mAh battery unit sounds pretty small. Sure enough, it soldiered on through twelve full hours of&nbsp;<em>Twilight</em>&nbsp;at 720p resolution &mdash; enough to turn anyone into a gibbering wreck.</p> <p>Getting this out of a 2400mAh battery is seriously impressive. HTC has clearly put some work into optimisation to get this kind of longevity.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s no shortage of little tech wingdings, either. The Desire Eye has NFC, 4G, aptX and fast battery charging tech. Naturally, it&#39;s expected to arrive running Android 5.0 Lollipop &ndash; skinned with HTC Sense 7; though <a href="https://twitter.com/upleaks/status/541072725695926274" target="_blank">@upleaks</a> also points to evidence suggesting that a Windows Phone variant is in the works.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/ultimate-setup-htc-one-m8/feature" target="_blank">Ultimate Setup: HTC One (M8)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/AwKAE5p85tY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> HTC could be ditching UltraPixel </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>HTC looks set to abandon its foray into UltraPixel cameras &ndash; which used sensors with a smaller number of larger pixels for (allegedly) improved low-light performance. @upleaks expects the HTC Hima to arrive with a 20.7MP rear camera, while MyDrivers points to a 16MP camera with optical image stabiliation.</p> <p>Round the front, @upleaks claims that the Hima will feature either a 13MP camera &ndash; or a 4MP UltraPixel snapper; so it seems that HTC may not be ready to abandon the UltraPixel experiment just yet.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/10-best-apps-htc-one-m8/feature" target="_blank">The 10 best apps for the HTC One (M8)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="HTC One (M9) concept by emprogadgets.tk" alt="HTC One (M9) concept by emprogadgets.tk" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/htc-one-m9-concept-02.jpg?1418266092" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Release date </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The HTC One (M9) is expected to launch at Mobile World Congress in March 2015, according to MyDrivers. Like the good old <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Nexus 7</a>, it&rsquo;s more practical than luxurious.</p> <p>The back is plastic, and has the sort of minimalist design a swedish furniture maker might come up with. Good-looking? Sure, but it doesn&rsquo;t give the hard, expensive impression of the iPad Air 2, or offer the jaw-dropping thin-n-lightness of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review">Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4</a>.</p> <p>You get the feeling Google cares a little more about what happens when you switch the screen on than what it feels like.</p> <p>That we can be so blasé about a tablet this thin and light tells you about how far we&#39;ve come, though. The Nexus 9 is 7.9mm thick and weighs just 425g in its Wi-Fi only incarnation.&nbsp;It <em>is</em> thin and it <em>is</em> light, it just doesn&rsquo;t showcase it in the same way the 6.1mm-thick iPad Air 2 does.</p> <p>That slight lack of initial impact is quickly forgotten when you start using the Nexus 9, though. The 4:3 aspect is so much better suited to an 8in-plus tablet than the widescreen styles that used to be the Android norm.</p> <p>Switch between this and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/google-nexus-10/review">Nexus 10</a> and the older tablet just seems a bit, well, silly. It&rsquo;s not just about the looks either, but how its weighting sits in your mitt. The Nexus 9 feels right, and is <em>just about</em> light enough to use one-handed while reading an article on the train on the way to work.</p> <p>In short, the Nexus 9 makes it pretty obvious why 10in widescreen tablets were never all that popular.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">Apple iPad Air 2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="No wows in the hardware design " alt="Google Nexus 9 review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-14.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Nexus 9 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Operating System</strong> -&nbsp;Android 5.0 Lollipop</p> <p><strong>Processor -</strong>&nbsp;64-bit Nvidia Tegra K1 @ 2.5GHz, Kepler GPU</p> <p><strong>RAM -</strong>&nbsp;2GB</p> <p><strong>Screen -</strong>&nbsp;8.9in IPS LCD with 2048x1536 resolution (281ppi)</p> <p><strong>Cameras -</strong>&nbsp;8MP rear with 1080p video, 1.6MP front</p> <p><strong>Storage -</strong>&nbsp;16/32GB (not expandable)</p> <p><strong>Connectivity -</strong>&nbsp;Dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.1, optional 3G/4G</p> <p><strong>Battery</strong> - 6700mAh</p> <p><strong>Dimensions -</strong>&nbsp;228 x 154 x 7.9mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong> - 425g (436g with 3G/4G)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Build me up, break me down </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nexus might lack some of the gloss of an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">iPad Air 2</a> but build quality is more than reasonable. The strong colour reproduction melded with the high resolution, bright backlight and very immediate image give the display plenty of pop.</p> <p>However, purists will notice a few little issues. First, this is an LCD and its black levels aren&rsquo;t close to what you get from an OLED tablet such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4</a>.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also some pretty clear leakage from the backlight, particularly clear at the top of the Nexus 9. It exhibits as a tiny strip of brightness at the top of the screen. You should get used to it, but those with display OCD may find it distracting. It is fairly minor, but is another little negative to jot down if you&rsquo;re after the ultimate Android tablet.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-105/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="This resolution is enough " alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-3.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> What flavour is that Lollipop? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So far, so ordinary: we&rsquo;ve seen better screen performance from both the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">iPad Air 2</a> and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Tab S</a> tablets. So what&rsquo;s it all about?</p> <p>Android 5.0 Lollipop has a new look. It appears and feels familiar, but everything has been given a subtle facelift. The soft keys are new. The apps menu now looks like a series of white pages and you double-swipe down from the top of the screen to access quick settings toggles and screen brightness.</p> <p>The lock screen is new, too, giving you notifications without having to take the tablet out of sleep mode. Very handy and about time. These are all things that we&rsquo;ve seen before in other custom interfaces. It&rsquo;s mostly just a neat, simple, quite cute UI &ndash;&nbsp;not a revolution.</p> <p>Google has also reworked a bunch of the standard Android apps in the Nexus 9&rsquo;s Android 5.0. Gmail, the Contacts book, Calendar and even the Play Store have all been given a spring clean.</p> <p>But speaking of apps, it&#39;s also worth noting that many still aren&#39;t optimised for larger Android screens. Developers seem happy to produce different versions of their apps for iPhone and iPad, but many seem content to release just one for Android, which is then simply blown-up to fit tablet screens. That can have some ugly results.</p> <p>But Lollipop is pretty elsewhere, with a colour palette that now has that extra hint of pastel to it. And everything moves with that extra bit of pep. Google seems to want the Nexus 9 to be something that would slide gracefully into an IKEA show home in its software as well as its hardware design.</p> <p>Is it flat-out better than what you get with the Google Now interface available for just about any Android device these days? Maybe, but not by a huge margin.</p> <p>What really matters is the stuff in the background &ndash;&nbsp;those turning cogs you can&rsquo;t see on the surface. Android 5.0 now supports 64-bit processors and is better primed for connections to other devices than ever before. Our guess is that this means deeper integration with Android Wear watches, co-operation that we don&rsquo;t even know about yet. For now, it means you can take up where you left off with media and apps in Lollipop goodies.</p> <p>A lot of that promise is about the future, not right now. For example, while the Tegra K1 CPU used in the Nexus 9 is 64-bit, there&rsquo;s nothing that specifically makes use of that more advanced architecture at present.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not noticeably faster than previous top Android tablets, either. There&rsquo;s the odd hint of lag here and there, undoubtedly because Android 5.0 Lollipop is a baby chick still brushing off those remaining bits of eggshell.</p> <p>We imagine it&rsquo;ll soon be improved in an update before too long, and it&rsquo;s hardly bad at present anyway. Just the occasional stutter, and some apps not loading as fast as we&rsquo;d like, especially given Android 5.0 uses a special ART runtime that&rsquo;s meant to speed this whole process up. We&rsquo;ll have a full review of <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/android-45/review">Android 5.0 Lollipop</a> up on Stuff.tv very soon.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-20.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-17.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-16.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The numbers of the beast </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Hardware-wise, the Nexus 9 is one of the most powerful Android devices ever made.</p> <p>Its Tegra K1 CPU is a dual-core 2.5GHz chipset &ndash; it may have just two cores, but they don&rsquo;t half pack a punch. In the Geekbench 3 benchmark, it scores roughly the same points per core as you get out of all of the Nexus 7&rsquo;s four cores. For the spec-heads out there, it scores 1970 points per core, 3332 total in Geekbench 3.</p> <p>However, the real meat of the K1 processor is in the graphics side. It uses a Kepler DX1, which has 192 cores &ndash; sounds ridiculous and it sorta is.&nbsp;</p> <p>We thought all this power might end up being squirted into oblivion, but there are already some games that make terrific use of it. For example, <em>Dead Trigger 2</em> offers a special graphics mode not available on other devices that adds gorgeous water effects, the kind you&rsquo;d only normally see in console or PC games. Yes, that does mean the game is now jammed full of puddles, but they aren&rsquo;t half pretty.</p> <p>These optimisations are already in place because this isn&rsquo;t the first time a Tegra K1 has been jammed into an Android device: the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nvidia-shield/review-0" target="_blank">Nvidia Shield Tablet</a> has one, too (a slightly different version). Nvidia went as far as to bring over classics such as <em>Portal</em> and <em>Half-life 2</em> to the Shield Tablet, but they don&rsquo;t seem to be available for the Nexus 9 yet.</p> <p>Fingers crossed they will be at some point, though. If only for show-off points.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nvidia-shield/review-0" target="_blank">Nvidia Shield Tablet review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sounds ridiculous and it sorta is " alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-game.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Front-loaded Bieber blasters </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Another nice little extra for gamers is the Nexus 9&rsquo;s front facing speakers. They&rsquo;re not too obvious, and sit to the extreme ends of each side of the tablet (when held in landscape).</p> <p>This sort of setup is top-notch in terms of positioning. You get that immersive stereo effect and they&rsquo;re virtually impossible to block to the extent that the sound becomes muffled. Even if you put a finger over each port, the sound isn&rsquo;t choked. We managed to ruin the sound by squishing a palm against each outlet, but you do have to try pretty hard.</p> <p>The Nexus 9&rsquo;s actual sound quality is a bit more of a mixed affair.</p> <p>With music in particular, the Nexus 9 can sound a bit strained, the mids unnatural. And treble lacks finesse and the clarity of some rivals. These are similar, or the same, BoomSound speakers used in phones like the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8</a><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">)</a>. But what is great in a phone doesn&#39;t seem quite so hot in this larger tablet.</p> <p>Still, sound quality remains better than average. The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">iPad Air 2</a>&nbsp;actually offers greater volume, more power and greater clarity, even though its speakers are in the &#39;wrong&#39; place.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Milli-amped up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Battery life is pretty good. But HTC and Google still seem to be working under the assumption tablet cameras aren&rsquo;t too important.</p> <p>We&#39;d wouldn&#39;t necesarily argue with that, but if you are a tablet snapper you&#39;ll likely find that your greatest annoyance isn&rsquo;t image quality but autofocus speed. It feels sluggish, not the sort of camera to whip out to capture your dog as it bounds across a park, flinging 360 degree drool. You&rsquo;d probably end up with a photo of some grass. Maybe a tree if you&rsquo;re lucky.&nbsp;The Nexus 9 is also prone to overexposing just about every cloud in the sky, too.</p> <p>Approach the camera with patience and you can get some reasonable results with pretty decent colour saturation, but&nbsp;we&#39;d recommend sticking to your phone camera unless you simply must let absolutely everyone see that you&rsquo;re rocking the new Nexus.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/using-your-ipad-air-2-camera-fine-and-here-s-why/feature" target="_blank">Using your iPad as a camera is fine, and here&#39;s why</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Autofocus is slow " alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-12.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Nexus 9 Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nexus 9 shows where Android tablets of the future should be headed &mdash; a little less geek locked in their bedroom, a bit more &lsquo;ordinary person&rsquo; relaxing in the lounge. Kind of makes sense, since you&#39;ll spend less time performing a balancing act with your smartphone while you grab that fleeting moment.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="HTC RE action cam" alt="HTC RE action cam" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0050.jpg.jpg?1413514947" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> And... action camera! </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The RE has a 16MP CMOS sensor and f/2.8 ultra wide-angle lens, and can capture 1080p footage at 30fps as well as time-lapse and 720p 120fps slow motion. Too many numbers to absorb? Here&#39;s the gist - this means you might have a better chance at capturing Usain Bolt as he crosses the finishing line.</p> <p>Time-lapse? That&#39;s basically capturing hours of footage and squeezing them into mere minutes. Much like those videos of growing plants that you see, except now you&#39;re the one filming it.</p> <p>Taking a picture is as easy as just tapping a button, and if you want to take a video, you just press and hold that same button. This activates an LED light that tells you what mode you&rsquo;re on. Wouldn&#39;t it be easier to control all these options via a screen, you ask? And then we remembered: this is an action camera. Much like GoPro&#39;s and Sony&#39;s portfolio, these cameras are meant to capture sequential shots and videos, based on your random movement rather than a well-scripted choreography.</p> <p>But still, how do you even review what you&#39;ve captured, without actually seeing it? Then, a HTC smartphone came into the picture during the demo session, along with an Android app. Oh, and HTC plays nice too with its competitors too, because there&#39;s also an iOS version of the app.</p> <p>The app is the connection between your smartphone and the RE camera, showing you the images or videos you&rsquo;ve taken via the action cam. In essence, your phone has become a viewfinder, allowing you to&nbsp;instantly see if you&rsquo;ve got the perfect shot. You can also enable the Remote Viewfinder, that will allow users to livestream footage direct to YouTube in a future update.&nbsp;</p> <p>In one hand, you&#39;ll be gripping the RE action cam, and the other would be preoccupied with the smartphone. Which is okay, considering the size and structure of the RE camera. Its buttons are strategically positioned at the front and at the back, so there will be no chance of you accidentally pushing them while you&#39;re on the smartphone.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="HTC RE action cam" alt="HTC RE action cam" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0075.jpg.jpg?1413514947" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Waterproof </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Another of RE&#39;s merits is its rugged nature. It comes waterproof out of the box; we didn&rsquo;t really have much time with the RE action cam to see it at work, but apparently it can be safely submerged up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. That means you don&rsquo;t have to worry about it malfunctioning in the beach, rain, or if it falls into a sink.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a cap you can purchase separately that lets you take it another 3m into water for up to two hours. Presumably, that&#39;s great for shallow dives, and you can capture the aquatic world without worrying about a short circuit in the camera.</p> <p>As for reviewing the videos and photos you&#39;ve taken? Do it later when you&#39;re next to a smartphone. And trust us, finding one&nbsp;that can accompany the RE action camera on those deeper swims? Almost impossible, and you won&#39;t really need to constantly check the captures while you enjoy the view.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="HTC RE action cam" alt="HTC RE action cam" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0072.jpg.jpg?1413514947" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Instant connection </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The brilliance of the RE camera is that it&#39;s platform agnostic, supporting both iOS and Android devices. Of course, these are numbers based on papers. Take it with a pinch of salt, and wait for our final verdict when we push a review unit to the limit.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a battery extender, which screws on to the RE Camera (it looks like an extension to the RE action cam) and gives the unit a boost (approximately double) to its battery life.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="HTC RE action cam" alt="HTC RE action cam" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0077.jpg.jpg?1413514947" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> HTC RE initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>By all accounts, the RE action camera is a fresh approach by HTC, and one that should get you excited with how you capture videos and images on-the-go.</p> <p>In truth, there are some mixed reactions. Try strapping a smartphone to yourself while you roam the streets and capture those crazy action shots. The user experience is somewhat of a question mark, and that&#39;s where the RE camera comes in - a standalone camera that lets you focus on the things around you, while it does its imaging job automatically.</p> <p>But on the flipside, while most smartphone makers try to bring the experience together, HTC chose to add another layer. Does it complicate things? Perhaps, but like all gadgets, conquer the learning curve, and you&#39;ll be amazed at the possibilities it brings.</p> <p>With or without a smartphone, the RE has a lot of potential, what with its dust- and waterproof features that&#39;ll protect it during action sequences. But for the initial phase, it feels like you&#39;re thrown back to the days when you act on pure blind faith, hoping that the shots you&#39;ve captured turn out fine.</p> <p>The RE is expected to hit retail shelves sometime in early November. Pricing hasn&#39;t been confirmed, but we&#39;re crossing our fingers that it&#39;ll be close to or even lower than the standard fares you&#39;re paying for a GoPro action camera.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/desire-eye/htc-desire-eye/review">HTC Desire eye hands-on preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="HTC RE action cam" alt="HTC RE action cam" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0082.jpg.jpg?1413514947" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> HTC RE hands-on </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Getting all the action with HTC&#039;s new camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-carousel-image-small"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item small image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_carousel_image_small" width="450" height="340" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0071.jpg_0.jpg?1413514945" /> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/action-cam/htc-re-action-cam/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/action-cam/htc-re-action-cam/review#comments Action Cam Cameras HTC Thu, 09 Oct 2014 15:00:40 +0000 Hafizah Osman 1449729 at http://www.stuff.tv
